Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always overdelivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm wayne tibodeau we begin in providence rhode island where two students are dead after a mass shooting at brown university the brown community's heart is breaking and providence's heart is breaking along with it we're a week and a half away from christmas that's providence mayor brett smiley another nine people were injured more than 400 officers are teaming up to find the suspected gunman, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee. We'll partner in, continue to partner in with our federal officials as well to make sure that justice comes to the individual that pulled the trigger and cause death. Chris Ray is now with details on how it happened.
Starting point is 00:01:19 We do not have a shooter in custody at this time. That's from Providence Mayor Brett Smiley following a mass shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island. Police are looking for a male suspect, dressed. in black. The call first came in at 4 p.m. Eastern, with shots fired in and around the engineering building. The building contains both classrooms and lab space. Two people are confirmed dead. President Donald Trump says he's been briefed on the situation. What a terrible thing it is. And all we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt, it looks like. A shelter in place is in effect for the entire campus with students.
Starting point is 00:02:00 and teachers told to lock doors, silence phones, and stay hidden. Chris Reyes, CBC News, New York. As flooding begins to recede in Abbotsc, BC, forecasters are warning about more water coming in. City officials say there is still overflow water coming from the Nooksack River in Washington State. Environment Canada is also forecasting more rain for the Fraser Valley this weekend and on Monday. The same weather system that brought rain to BC, brought snow to the Rocky Mountains, almost 50 centimeters.
Starting point is 00:02:34 And as Sarah Reid tells us, it's creating dangerous avalanche conditions. The good news is we're getting a lot of snow. But avalanche forecaster and ski guide Doug Latimer says there's another side to the seemingly ideal ski forecast. Snow is very grumpy. It does not like to change quickly. However, that's exactly what's happening in the Rockies. A powerful storm just last week, dropped a significant amount of snow along with high winds. The forecast shows the next storm in the coming days is expected to bring much of the same.
Starting point is 00:03:08 All this is building on top of a weak layer down in the snowpack caused by warm fall temperatures. Avalanche Canada is reporting the risk in Banff National Park to be considerable. Jasper National Park is also rated as having considerable risk, but more snow and wind will increase that risk to high for some areas. Sarah Reid, CBC News and Minton. The U.S. is lifting sanctions on Belarusian Pottash in exchange for the release of political prisoners. Trump-onvoy John Cole says it's a good agreement for both nations.
Starting point is 00:03:42 123 prisoners were released, but negotiations to free hundreds more are ongoing. That's a logistical problem to get about a thousand people, get them out, get them to where they're supposed to be. I think it's more than possible that we can do that. It's probable. The U.S. imposed sanctions on the Russian ally in 2020, following a violent crackdown on opposition protesters. Demonstrators rallied against President Alexander Lukashenko's disputed election. Podash is a key component in fertilizer.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Belarus is the world's third biggest producer behind Canada. Well, if you think stargazing is only for warm summer nights, think again. Guelph science educator Burnaby Orbach says the Geminids meteor shower it will peak this weekend. Whenever we pass through dust left by a comet or something that's in space, that particulate matter will burn up in the atmosphere.
Starting point is 00:04:38 That's what we see as shooting stars or meteors. It'd be pretty reasonable to see like 100 meteors an hour with that type of shooting star. For best viewing, NASA suggests finding an area away from the city lights and lying on your back. And about 30 minutes,
Starting point is 00:04:53 your eyes should start to adjust. Thank you.
