Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude fay in australia police say they are treating a mass shooting at a popular beach as a terrorist attack it's obviously the fact that it's the first day of harnica the types of weapons the offenders some of the other items we found at the scene as i said we have found an improvised explosive device in a car mal lanyan is the commissioner of the new south wales police, he says at least 11 people were killed after gunmen opened fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney. One of the gunmen has also been killed. Reporter Katie Silver is in Sydney.
Starting point is 00:01:08 It has been confirmed that it is a terrorist incident. They were taking aim at an event. It was called Hanukkah by the sea on Bondi Beach. It was a very important event in the Jewish people's calendar here in Sydney. We understand about a thousand people at that event. Now, police say that they responded quickly. There has been criticism in the last few hours from eyewitnesses saying that there's a lot of confusion and actually that the response was quite slow and disorganised.
Starting point is 00:01:34 We've also heard the identity of one of the gunmen has been confirmed, and sources are saying that their home is being raided in order to try and work out exactly what's gone on here. We also heard as well from the Prime Minister, calling it a devastating terrorist attack, saying that it was targeted, saying that there is no space for, to quote him, evil anti-Semitism in Australia. Where it occurred, a very popular part of Sydney. So it really is absolutely devastating for Australia and indeed for Sydney and for Bondi.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Katie Silver for CBC News, Sydney. Meanwhile, in the United States. And I want to offer my profound thanks to all the hardworking men and women and law enforcement who worked through the night to be able to get us to this point where we can confirm that there is a person of interest who has been detained.
Starting point is 00:02:23 This is exactly the kind of collaboration that we train for and that we hope for. That is the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island speaking to reporters this morning. The person of interest is in custody in connection with the shooting at Brown University yesterday. No other details have been released. That shooting, which happened during final exams, left two students dead and nine others injured. Abbotsburg, B.C. has lifted evacuation alerts for more than 1,000 properties, in the hardest hit area of Sumas Prairie. The news comes as floodwaters slowly recede.
Starting point is 00:03:00 And while it's a relief to many, the South Coast is bracing for another round of rain. Janella Hamilton has more. Rebecca Thoreau looks out what's left of a now waterlogged garden at Archway's urban farm in Abysford. The produce from this farm helping feed some of the cities most vulnerable.
Starting point is 00:03:19 We're all kind of heartbroken. The latest intense and persistent rain re-activating Abbotsford's disaster relief fund. A program Arrini Calipan says was created following the 2021 floods. And I got to meet with some of the families who had received Abbotsford Disaster Relief money. And they said, you know what? Yours were the only funds we saw to help us rebuild.
Starting point is 00:03:44 We didn't have any money from government. We didn't have insurance money. At the farm, staff continued to assess the damage, waiting and hoping tonight's storm doesn't wash away the rest of the farm and with it food security for the community. Janella Hamilton, CBC News, Abbotsford. Provincial officials have ordered Mont Saint Anne in Quebec to indefinitely shut down three chair lifts.
Starting point is 00:04:09 An inspection last week showed problems with the electrical system that could constitute a danger to public safety. The ski resort had planned to open this weekend after closing last week due to similar problems. It says it's been experiencing issues since an outage on November 28th. In Thailand, the military holds a memorial service as it returns the bodies of four soldiers to their families. They were killed fighting along the Cambodian border. The violence marks the collapse of the ceasefire brokered by the Trump administration. And that is your world this hour.
