Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude pig we begin with developing news out of australia where police say they are treating a mass shooting at a popular beach as a terrorist attack video shows a gunman shooting over a wall at a crowd on the country's iconic bondi beach police say the attack was designed to target sydney's jewish community and that at least 11 people were killed. One of the gunmen was also killed. Reporter Phil Mercer is in Sydney. The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, is calling this incident a targeted attack on the
Starting point is 00:01:11 Jewish community. Now, the police say that two gunmen opened fire on people attending a Jewish festival. Now, we've seen a lot of video footage from the scene. One of those shows a bystander tackling one of the attackers, taking their gun and turning it back on them. That, in individual has been held a hero. The police also saying that 11 people have been killed. One gunman has also died. Another shooter is in custody. And the police say about 30 people are in hospital, some with very serious injuries. And the police here have now declared this a terrorist incident. Intelligence bosses say that one of the suspects was known to the authorities. We've also heard details of explosives being found in a car apparently owned by one of the suspects.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Phil Mercer for CBC News, Sydney. Israel is responding to the mass shooting on Bondi Beach. President Isaac Herzog is sending his condolences to the Jewish community there that has been impacted by the attack. But he also has some criticism for Australia's government. We repeat our alert time and again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism, which is plaguing Australian society. Herzog calls the incident, quote, a very cruel attack on Jews by vile terrorists.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement this morning saying he's horrified by the anti-Semitic terror attack that has stolen 12 lives. Police in Providence, Rhode Island, have a person of interest in custody following a mass shooting at Brown University yesterday that killed at least two students. The Brown community's heart is breaking and Providence's heart is breaking along with it. We're a week and a half away from Christmas. That's Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and other nine people were wounded. The Ivy League campus had been put under a shelter and place order that has since been lifted. This student described the chaotic situation. There's been such a weird track of misinformation and we don't know what's reliable to look at. We've been just relying on
Starting point is 00:03:26 social media right now and texts from friends and word of mouth. Students in nearby labs hid under desks and turned lights off after receiving an alert about the shooting, as many as 400 officers, were deployed. Chile heads into a high-stakes presidential runoff today, the two main candidates offering starkly contrasting visions of the country's future. But as Marie-Armel LaFore reports from Santiago, fears over crime and immigration are tipping the balance towards the far right. At this outdoor market in Santiago, voters are split between communist candidate Jeanette Hara and her opponent on the far right, Jose Antonio Kast.
Starting point is 00:04:07 This voter says rights and freedoms are at stake in this election and says Kast is dangerous. But this voter says Kass's tough language on crime and immigration is already bringing change. Robert Funk teaches political science at the University of Chile. He says although Hara represented a coalition of parties on the left, she was unable to distance herself from the Communist Party and portray a more moderate image.
