Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. We begin with the latest from Australia. It's our duty this morning to report that 16 people have been confirmed as been killed, 15 innocent people and one perpetrator. There are 42 people in New South Wales hospitals overnight, and the victim's age ranges are from, as young. as 10 to 87. That's New South Wales Premier Chris Mins with an update on the attack
Starting point is 00:01:04 at Bondi Beach Sunday. A pair of gunmen opened fire on a gathering of Jews celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. Police say the suspects were a father and son. The 50-year-old was killed and the 24-year-old is now in hospital in critical condition. Australian officials
Starting point is 00:01:21 are calling it a terrorist attack. Minns accused the suspect of quote, cancerous anti-Semitism. And he praised the bystander. who intervened. Thank you to innocent bystanders and civilians who stood up, risked their own lives to save other people's lives. Video was emerging of a man sneaking up behind one of the gunmen and wrestling the weapon out of his hands. Rabbi Yankee Berger is from Ottawa, but now lives in Australia. His son survived the attack. The people who were killed were my close friends.
Starting point is 00:01:52 It's devastating. It's shocking. You know, we woke up this morning just hoping it was one big bad dream. And my son, he heard the first gunshots. So he ran for cover and he took his daughter. There are a few other children there. He took them along with them. And he stood like in front of them, you know, to prevent them from harm's way. The sounds of the gunshots were coming closer and closer. And he literally said his last prayers with his daughter. Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement saying he's horrified by the anti-Semitic terror attack and that Canada stands with Australians and Jews everywhere. We've got some breaking news from Hong Kong.
Starting point is 00:02:28 A judge has just found Jimmy Lai guilty of sedition and foreign collusion. The pro-democracy activist and business tycoon ran the Apple Daily newspaper. A sentencing hearing will begin in January, Lai could face life in prison. Pierre Pahliav insists conservatives are united behind his message on affordability, even after another MP crossed the floor last week. As Olivia Stefanovic reports, Pauliev denies the latest defection as a sign. of internal problems.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Is this a problem of your leadership at this stage? You know, it's a problem of Mark Carney's leadership. Speaking to Rosemary Barden Live, conservative leader Pierre Pollyev accused the prime minister of trying to manipulate his way to a majority. Then you have to go to the Canadian people and have them vote for it, not do it by a dirty backroom deal. This was Pauliev's first on-camera interview
Starting point is 00:03:20 since losing three MPs in just over a month. When asked if he took any lessons from the past, year, which started off with a conservative leader riding high in the polls, then losing the federal election along with his own riding, Pollyev didn't say. Focusing instead on the reason he's still in the job, fighting for better, more affordable lives, he said, for Canadians. Olivia Stefanovic, CBC News, Ottawa. Rainfall warnings are back across British Columbia's Fraser Valley, as homeowners and farmers try to recover from last week's flooding. Caroline Bargou reports.
Starting point is 00:03:59 325 properties were evacuated in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Those residents still can't return home. However, there are positive signs as the floodwaters are receding. Some evacuation warnings have been downgraded to alerts. Still, more rain is on the way. Up to 80 millimeters is expected in some areas beginning Sunday night. Every time it rains are, when we hear that word atmospheric river, we're panicking. Burn Oistrick is a supervisor at Environmental Corps Recycling in Abbotsford. His facility was flooded this week. I think this is a floodplain, so I don't think we can get insurance.
Starting point is 00:04:33 It's just ugly. It is really ugly, eh? Highway 1 in Abbotsford has reopened, but the province says it may close again if there's too much rain. Environment Canada says more rain could destabilize land that could increase the risk of landslides. Caroline Bargoot, CBC News, Vancouver. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm not. Neil Hurland.
