Reiner is dead. Reiner's body and the body of his wife, Michelle, were found yesterday at the couple's home in Los Angeles. Los Angeles police officers, along with the Los Angeles City Fire Department,
Starting point is 00:00:42 responded to the 200 block of Chadbourne Avenue here in the city of Brentwood. Upon arrival, they determined that there were two deceased individuals inside of the residence. That is Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton. Police officials say they have opened a homicide investigation, and there are media reports. reports the couple's 32-year-old son may be a suspect. Reiner, the son of comedy great Carl Reiner, began his career as an actor on the 1970s sitcom All in the Family. He went on to direct such hit movies as When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, The Princess Bride, and Spinal Tap, among others. Rob Reiner was 78 years old.
Starting point is 00:01:23 The Prime Minister of Australia is calling for stricter gun control laws in his country. in the wake of yesterday's horrific attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney. Fifteen people were killed in the attack, which police say was carried out by two gunmen. They say one suspect is dead and the second is in hospital. Phil Mercer has more. People have been gathering all day here at Bondi Beach to lay flowers among the visitors, the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese and other senior political figures. There is an undeniable sense of despondency, anger and uncertainty.
Starting point is 00:01:59 among the victims, a 10-year-old girl, the oldest 87 years of age. The government is facing pressure over its response to a rising tide of anti-Semitism in Australia since the October 7 attacks and Israel's war in Gaza. The Prime Minister is insisting that anti-Jurist sentiment is being taken seriously. There is an overriding sense of trauma here at Australia's most famous beach. Phil Mercer for CBC News at Bondi Beach in Sydney. We have an update now in the shooting last week at Brown University in Rhode Island. Authorities are releasing a man who had been held as a person of interest in the shooting
Starting point is 00:02:43 that left two students dead and nine others injured. At a news conference, officials say the investigation is now going in a, quote, different direction. Officials won't say at this point why that man was taken into custody in the first place. A Hong Kong court has found media mogul Jimmy Lai guilty of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. Lie, the founder of the now defunct Apple Daily newspaper, could face life in prison under China's national security law. Laura Westbrook has more. One of the three national security judges Esther Toe says there was no doubt in the judge's minds that Lai had never wavered in his intention to destabilize China and continued to call for sanctions against China and
Starting point is 00:03:27 Hong Kong after the national security law took effect. Here's Hong Kong's national security police chief, Steve Lee. The court particularly highlighted that the testimony of the lie is a contradiction, inconsistent and reliable, and also highlighted that he is the mastermind of the free charges. A vocal critic of China's leaders, Jimmy Lai founded the well-known pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper. It was forced to shut down in 2021.
