The Canadian MPs, one new Democrat and five liberals, also planned to meet with the Palestinian Authority, which administers part of the occupied territory.
Starting point is 00:01:26 The trip is sponsored by the Canadian Muslim vote, a registered non-profit in Canada, The Israeli government has declined to comment on the visit. Australia's federal police commissioner says Sunday's mass shooting that claimed 15 lives at a Hanukkah celebration was a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State. And police are looking into allegations that the two suspects in the shooting, a father and son, traveled abroad for military training. Malcolm Lanyon is the New South Wales Police Commissioner. I can confirm that they did travel to the Philippines. The reasons why they went to the Philippines, and the purpose of that and where they went when they were there, is under investigation at the moment.
Starting point is 00:02:07 I also confirmed that the vehicle, which is registered to the younger male, contained IEDs, but I also confirmed that it contained two homemade ISIS flags. The suspects in the attack, as mentioned, a father and son with the older man shot and killed on the scene. Of the more than 30 people wounded in the attack, 25 are still in hospital, including 10 in critical condition. Among the hospitalized is Ahmed al-Ocmed. He was captured on video tackling and disarming one of the assailants. U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a $5 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. It relates to a speech he gave on January 6, 2021, the day his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. The BBC made edits to that speech, which Trump says were misleading. The BBC admits that the editing was, quote, an error in judgment, and two senior members of the network have subsequently resigned.
Starting point is 00:03:02 The federal government is releasing its plan today to cut Canada's methane emissions. CBC News has obtained an early copy of today's announcement, which is aimed primarily at the oil and gas sector. David Thurton reports. That hissing sound is so when oil well and all. that's been leaking methane and other hydrocarbons. Methane is a greenhouse gas, 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Methane pollution is supercharging the planet's warming. I'm really looking forward to being able to publish those regulations for enhanced methane regulations shortly. Environment and climate change minister Julie de Berzin hinted the new rules
Starting point is 00:03:43 were coming in a year-end interview. Methad emissions come from many places, including rotting fruit in garbage dumps. But Canada's largest source of methane pollution is the fossil fuel sector and their leaky valves, pipes, and how they refine their products. Through new regulations, the federal government will ban, with exceptions, oil and gas facilities from venting methane into the atmosphere. But they are also giving companies some leeway to come up with their own approach after pushback from industry.
Starting point is 00:04:14 David Thornton, CBC News, Ottawa. Canada Post says children riding Santa Claus this holiday, season will get a response. A month-long strike last year meant Santa couldn't respond to the letters, but Canada Post officials say this year Santa definitely will be replying. This covers all letters mailed by December 8th with the traditional Ho-Ho-Ho Postal Code. The post office says more than a million letters are delivered to and from Santa every year.
