Starting point is 00:00:00 There are two kinds of Canadians, those who feel something when they hear this music. And those who've been missing out so far. I'm Chris Howden. And I'm Neil Kuksal. We are the co-hosts of As It Happens. And every day we speak with people at the center of the day's most hard-hitting, heartbreaking, and sometimes hilarious news stories. Also, we have puns.
Starting point is 00:00:20 Here Why As It Happens is one of Canada's longest running in most beloved shows. You can find us wherever you get your podcasts. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. A delegation that includes six Canadian MPs has been denied entry into the occupied West Bank. They were turned back today by Israeli officials as they attempted to enter by road from Jordan. New Democrat MP Jenny Kwan is part of the delegation. She says they were planning to meet with Palestinians who have been affected by settler violence
Starting point is 00:00:59 and live in displacement camps. The issue that we're pushing for is really grounded on human rights, basic human rights and humanitarian action. Having a chance to getting closer to the issue, talking to the people firsthand, I don't think that could be replaced. The Canadian MPs, one new Democrat and five liberals, also plan to meet with the Palestinian Authority, which administers part of the occupied territory.
Starting point is 00:01:26 The trip is sponsored by the Canadian Muslim vote, a registered non-profit in Canada. Israeli government is saying the Canadians were turned away for security reasons. Australia's Federal Police Commissioner says Sunday's mass shooting that claimed 15 lives at a Hanukkah celebration was a terrorist attack inspired by the Islamic State. And police are looking to allegations
Starting point is 00:01:48 that the two suspects in the shooting, a father and son, traveled abroad for military training. Malcolm Lanyon is the New South Wales Police Commissioner. I can confirm that they did travel to the Philippines. The reasons why they went to the Philippines and the purpose of that and where they went when they were there is under investigation at the moment. I also confirm that the vehicle which is registered to the younger
Starting point is 00:02:12 male contained IEDs, but I also confirmed that it contained two homemade ISIS flags. The suspects in the attack, as mentioned, are a father and son with the older man shot and killed on the scene. Of the more than 30 people wounded in the attack, 25 or still in hospital, including 10 in critical condition. Among the hospitalized is Ahmed al-Akmed, who was captured on video tackling and disarming, one of the assailants. Canada has announced another $50 million donation to the Ukrainian war effort. Defense Minister David McGinty says it will go toward boosting Ukraine's drone capabilities. McGinty took part today in a meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group,
Starting point is 00:02:54 which brings together more than 50 countries allied with Kyiv. The federal government is releasing its plan today to cut Canada's methane emissions. CBC News has obtained an early copy of today's announcement, which is aimed primarily at the oil and gas sector. David Thurton reports. That hissing sound is from an oil well in Alberta that's been leaking methane and other hydrocarbons. Methane is a greenhouse gas. 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide, methane pollution is supercharging the planet.
Starting point is 00:03:28 it's warming. I'm really looking forward to being able to publish those regulations for enhanced methane regulations shortly. Environment and climate change minister Julie DeBruzen hinted the new rules were coming in a year-end interview. Methad emissions come from many places, including rotting fruit in garbage dumps. But Canada's largest source of methane pollution is the fossil fuel sector and their leaky valves, pipes, and how they refine their products. Through new regulations, the federal government will ban, with exceptions, or oil and gas facilities from venting methane into the atmosphere. But they are also giving companies some leeway to come up with their own approach
Starting point is 00:04:07 after pushback from industry. David Thornton, CBC News. Ottawa. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued again for parts of British Columbia already swamped in recent days by heavy rain and floodwaters. Environment Canada is forecasting up to 70 millimeters of rain over the next 24 hours for areas including the Fraser Valley and parts of Metro Vancouver. The water that float across the border from a river in Washington State has now receded for the most part,
Starting point is 00:04:34 but the flood threat remains for several BC rivers and has, at some points, even expanded. People in and around the hardest-ed areas are being warned to avoid riverbanks and all waterways. And that is the world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
