It's a time traditionally associated with faith and resilience. Rabbis in Bondi are urging Australians to come together. My name is Noach, Konsepolski, I'm a local figure over here in Sydney.
Starting point is 00:01:15 There's tremendous grief, but there's tremendous love. As Australia reflects on one of its darkest days, it's also recognising heroism. There were bystanders who rushed to help the victims, including Boris and Sophia German, who died after trying to disarm one of the attackers. They're going to live through us now. We're going to be their heroes and live Jewish, strong and proud. In recent days, life at Australia's most famous beach is beginning to return to what it was before the attack. But for others, life will never be the same. Phil Mercer for CBC News at Bondi Beach in Sydney.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Israel's Cabinet approved proposals for 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Bank today. The country's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, says the move is meant to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state. In the past two years, Israel has approved 69 settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. They're considered illegal under international law. The decision also comes as the U.S. pushes Israel and Hamas to move to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. A man hunts underway in South Africa after gunmen opened fire in a tavern, at least nine people. Another 10 were hurt. Police say at this point the attack appears to be random. Dominic Volaitis has the latest. South African police say they are now hunting those

Investigators say around a dozen gunmen arrived in two cars at the bar in Bekestell near Johannesburg at about 1 a.m. According to witnesses, they entered the building and began shooting randomly at customers. Local deputy police commissioner Fred Kakana says the shooting did not end there. They shot other three on the street while running away. They were taken to the nearest clinic, which is a few meters away. They passed on. Another one passed on on the road. Those injured are now being treated in hospital as the police try to work out the motive for the attack.
Starting point is 00:03:21 South Africa has one of the highest. murder rates in the world at 45 people per 100,000, according to the latest figures from the United Nations. As Ottawa and Alberta push forward on plans for a new westward oil pipeline, Prime Minister Mark Carney's getting heat for what some critics see as his pivot on climate change. In an end-of-year interview with the CBC's Rosemary Barton, Carney defended his deal with Alberta as a way to reach environmental goals. I'm not really sure what you're getting out of it. What the country, it's not about me, what the country is getting out of it, is action.
Starting point is 00:04:00 The country is getting investment, investment in clean energy, investment in nuclear, investment in carbon capture. Investment in carbon capture. Most people will hear that and, of course, they think, well, what does that actually mean? It means the equivalent of taking 90% of the cars and trucks off the road in Alberta.
