Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Kate McGilfrey. In a year-end interview, the Prime Minister is pulling even farther away from Trudeau-era climate policy. Mark Carney says the plans had too many regulations and not enough investment in clean energy and technology. Olivia Stefanovic has more. The fact is, we're not going to meet our targets. It's the Prime Minister's strongest rejection yet of his predecessor's climate plan.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Mark Carney told CBC Chief Political Correspondent Rosemary Barton, Canada won't achieve its climate goals under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's plan. So he's trying to steer the country in a new direction. We are going to grow clean energy in this country at a scale never seen before. But Carney's plan may also include a new bidgium pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Coast, a potential project that spurred the cabinet resignation of environmentalist Stephen Gilbo. who Carney says knew the details of a memorandum of understanding signed with Alberta before departing. And elements of the MOU were changed consistent with his views.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Carney didn't specify which elements of the agreement were changed for Gilbo. The former minister declined CBC's request for an interview. Olivia Estevanovich, CBC News, Ottawa. Israel's cabinet approved proposals for 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank today. The country's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, says the move is meant to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state. In the past two years, Israel has approved 69 settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Settlements are considered illegal under international law. The U.S. Coast Guard is pursuing an oil tanker in international waters.
Starting point is 00:02:19 Multiple U.S. media outlets are citing U.S. officials who say the vessel is part of Venezuela's efforts to evade sanctions on its oil. The Karen Pauls tells us it's the third interception U.S. forces have made in the last two weeks. This is the second vessel pursued by the U.S. in two days. On Saturday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a video on social media. It showed the U.S. military flying over the Panamanian flagged ship in international waters and American forces boarding the vessel. Noam said the action is part of the U.S. efforts to, quote, pursue the illicit movement of sanctioned oil that is used to fund narco-terrorism.
Starting point is 00:03:00 The interceptions come just days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced what he called a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers leaving and entering Venezuela, an escalation in his pressure campaign on Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. The Venezuelan government hasn't yet responded to Sunday's action, but has previously described the seizures as acts of piracy and international terrorism. Karen Paul's, CBC News, Washington. Across the country, the number of Canadians visiting food banks has been going up for years. Toronto's Daily Bread Food Bank says they had more than 4 million visits this year, up 340% since 2019.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Valerie Tarasuk is a nutrition professor and food insecurity investigator at the University of Toronto. We would be wrong to see that as just a food story. It's really about the struggle, and the struggle is rooted in financial problems. The truth is most of the people who are food insecure already have jobs. They actually may have multiple jobs, but those jobs are insufficient to cover current living costs. Daily Bread Food Bank is asking for support from all levels of government and urging people to contact policymakers to demand better social assistance benefits. And in Kolkata, India.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Hundreds of people marched in a pride parade on Sunday. India's first Pride March was held 20. 26 years ago in the same city. Attendees gathered today under rainbow flags and danced to Bollywood music. Sapno Nina was at the event. This is a protest at the end of the day. This is a gathering for equality of genders, equality of all the sexes and identities that exists.
