Find crime story wherever you get your podcasts. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings first to australia where newly released police documents are detailing the days and hours leading up to last week's mass shooting on bondi beach 15 people were killed as two gunmen opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration, and police say it appears the attack had been planned for months. And in addition to the guns used in the massacre, officers are saying the suspects threw four explosive devices that failed to detonate.
Starting point is 00:01:06 As for the surviving suspect, 24-year-old Navid Akram has now been transferred from hospital and is in a prison facility. Meanwhile, the New South Wales legislature has been recalled to begin. in the process of debating stricter gun control legislation. Phil Mercer reports. I think it's really important that we take action in relation to guns. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns is promising Australia's toughest gun laws that would restrict the number and types of firearms that individuals can own. He also wants to give the police more powers to ban protests,
Starting point is 00:01:41 which could affect large-scale marches. I know that there's a deep concern about international events and wars and that people's passions are heightened and there's genuine concern about it and I'm not criticising them for holding those views. My responsibility is in Sydney right now. We need to make sure that the community is not divided. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was geared as he arrived at a memorial to remember the victims of the Bondi Beach shootings.
Starting point is 00:02:11 His critics have accused him of failing to curb rising anti-Semitism. In response, he's promising to crack down on extremism Phil Mursa for CBC News at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Now to Moscow. That is a Russian official announcing an investigation into a car bombing that has claimed the life of a senior member of the Russian military. Lieutenant General Finil Savarov was killed this morning after an explosive device was detonated under his vehicle.
Starting point is 00:02:45 vehicle. The Kremlin says it's investigating a theory that Ukrainian intelligence was involved. At this point, however, there's been no comment from Keeve. Citing national security concerns, the Trump administration is pausing five large-scale offshore wind projects under construction on the East Coast. The administration official says the pause is effective immediately. U.S. President Donald Trump has long been a vocal opponent of wind turbines and Interior Secretary Doug Bergam. says studies are needed to, quote, determine the vulnerabilities created by wind technology. As 2025 comes to a close, Canadian air travelers can look back on two labor disruptions that over the year grounded thousands of flights and upended travel plans for thousands of people. And as we hear now from Anisadari, it's possible there could be more of that to come in 2026. Contract disputes aren't a tailwind.
Starting point is 00:03:45 for airlines as the new year approaches, even though Canadian travelers already faced big delays and cancellations this year. We still got four or five major unions still in the pipeline. John Graddock lectures on the aviation industry at McGill University. He says Air Canada will be negotiating with ground and baggage crew. Porter Airlines is bargaining with its workers. And West Jet, their flight attendants have a contract that expires December 31st. And Canadians are going to be faced with situations where these contracts could potentially disrupt, travel through 2026, and maybe even 2027. But industry and labor experts say, even though contracts are already being negotiated,
Starting point is 00:04:26 it could be months before any land, with no timeline on when or even if passengers could end up grounded. And he's Hidari, CBC News, Calgary.
