The Ukrainian president just wrapped up a sit-down meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax, as Volodymyr Zelensky makes a push to bring the conflict in his country to a close with two big North American meetings this weekend. It comes as overnight attacks on Kiev killed one and injured 27 and left thousands without power in the winter cold.
Starting point is 00:00:57 The CBC's J.P. Tasker reports. We have the conditions, the possibility of a just and lasting peace. Sitting down for a bilateral meeting in Halifax, Prime Minister Mark Carney is pledging Canada's support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's plan to end the Russian war. The attack on Kiev shows just how important it is that we stand with Ukraine. While condemning Moscow's latest missile strike, Carney is also promising $2.5 billion more in loan support for Ukraine
Starting point is 00:01:29 to help with reconstruction if and when this nearly four-year-long conflict comes to an end. And this attack is, again, Russia's answer on our peace efforts. Zelensky's next stop is Palm Beach, Florida for a meeting with President Donald Trump. Ukraine wants the U.S. to sign off on security guarantees to protect it from future Russian attacks. So far, Trump has been non-committal. J.P. Tasker, CBC News, Washington. Thailand and Cambodia have signed a ceasefire agreement after three days of negotiations. Now we invite the border side to proceed with the actions of the side copies of the dark statement.
Starting point is 00:02:09 It puts a halt to weeks of fighting along their border. If peace holds for 72 hours, Thailand will repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers that were captured earlier this year. Recent clashes killed at least 100 people and displaced more than half a million on both sides. The two countries have a long-standing border dispute dating back to 19. Police in northeastern Alberta are warning people to stay away from a heavily armed man. He has shot at multiple individuals near Grand Prairie and was last known to be near the community of LaGlas. The man's driving at 22 Black Ford F-350. Police are asking people not to approach him and to call 911 if spotted.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Italian authorities have arrested nine people for allegedly funding Hamas through several charities. The suspects were accused of sending about 7 million euros or more than 11 million Canadian to associations connected to Hamas in Gaza. The Italian Interior Minister says the investigation has lifted the veil on what he says were initiatives pretending to serve the Palestinian population. There's been no comment from the suspects or from the charitable organizations. And extreme cold, strong winds, heavy snow and freezing rain are affecting regions from coast to coast. Areas around Sioux-Saint-Marie, Ontario are getting heavy snow and wind.
Starting point is 00:03:31 In some parts of the Yukon, the wind chill is making it feel like minus 50. And people in Newfoundland and Labrador are busy digging out after a heavy dose of winter weather, earlier than many were expecting. The CBC's Leila Baudwan has more from St. John's. I'm actually looking at the Springdale camera right now, and I can't see nothing on it. Whiteouts are making it hard for environment Canada meteorologist Graham McDonald's to monitor the roads. Planes aren't taking off from St. John's International.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Ferry shut down, a low-pressure system bringing snow fast and heavy. Linda Chesson is the mayor of Cornerbrook in Western Newfoundland. She says the city is at full capacity digging out. We are having what a lot of seniors have told me is an all-fashioned winter. It's more severe in northern Newfoundland. Labrador, where parts of the highway are closed. I'm getting sick of it. McDonald's says this winter is packing a stronger, earlier punch for the entire province.
