Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, the world this hour, I'm Karen Hauerlock. U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu say they had a productive meeting today at Trump's Mar-a-Rosurit in Florida. Trump wants to move on with the U.S. brokered peace deal in Gaza. J.P. Tasker has more. We came to a lot of conclusion, a lot of conclusion and conclusions. U.S. President Donald Trump says he has worked out some lingering bilateral issues with his Israeli counterpart, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Starting point is 00:01:07 But what hasn't been decided is when Israel will pull back from Gaza. Under the peace deal, Trump brokered in October, a neutral board of peace was supposed to take over after the Israeli hostages were released. Well, that's a separate subject. We'll talk about that. While batting away a question about when exactly Israel will withdraw its forces, Trump came down, on Hamas, saying they need to disarm quickly or else. It's going to be really, really bad for them. And I don't want that to happen. But they made an agreement that they were going to disarm.
Starting point is 00:01:39 He says peace in the Middle East depends on it. J.P. Tasker, CBC News, Washington. Trump says Russia's accusation against Ukraine of a drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin's residences is not good. Ukrainian president of Vladimir Zelensky says the claim is a lie. It comes a day after Trump and Zelensky met in Florida to discuss an updated peace plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Moscow says it will revise its negotiating position. China is conducting two days of military drills in the Taiwan Straits, calling them a warning to separatist forces.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Taiwanese forces are on high alert. Caroline Bargut has details. China has long claimed Taiwan as its own, something the democratically governed island rejects. Lin Jian is a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry. He says the Taiwan issue is the core of China's core interests to safeguard national sovereignty, adding, any sinister attempt to obstruct China's reunification will never succeed. As a precaution, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said its army was on high alert.
Starting point is 00:02:47 The island is also calling for calm. Karen Guo, a spokesperson for Taiwan's presidential office said, We call on the Chinese authorities to act rationally and with self-restraint. Earlier this month, the U.S. announced an $11 billion arm sale to the island, angering Beijing. Japan's prime minister, Sanehakaichi, suggested that Japan's self-defense forces could step in if China attacked Taiwan. Caroline Bargut, CBC News, London. Thousands are still without power as a winter storm blows through Ontario and Quebec. In some areas, freezing rain is coating sidewalks, trees, and power lines with ice.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Colin Butler has more. John Brutley loads up on salt at a Canadian tire in Ottawa, ready for sidewalks and driveway. So the ice, basically. This is probably going to be the rest of the years to fly. In Ontario, winter warnings stretch from Windsor through the GTA. In Toronto, ice pellets and snow could pile up to 12 centimeters. In the province's north, there are whiteout conditions,
Starting point is 00:03:47 and totals could reach 20 centimeters. Ryan Pellone is with Tim and Snow removal. He's been clearing snow since two. I grew up here all life and I've maybe seen a storm months or twice like this, so this is pretty bad. In Quebec, Montreal, Utaway and the eastern townships could see 15 millimeters of ice before the freezing rain tapers off, but then 90-kilometer an hour winds. Airports are seeing a host of delays and cancellations as the storm moves east, it's clear, winter is here to stay, and it's only the opening act. Colin Butler, CBC News, London, Ontario. The settlement is being proposed in a class action lawsuit by soccer fans who expected to see Leonel Messi at a match in May of 2024 between the Vancouver White Caps and Inter-Miamy FC.
Starting point is 00:04:34 The proposal includes a $475,000 charitable donation and changes to the white caps ticketing policies but no money for fans. The suit alleges advertising suggested Messi and other stars would be at the match, but they were not. And that is your world at hour. I'm Karen Hauerluck for CBC News.
