Thousands of people are still without electricity across Ontario after being hit by freezing rain, strong winds, and heavy snow. Police are warning people to stay off the roads because of treacherous driving conditions. At Colin Butler reports, crews are working around the clock to restore power. So it is all hands-on deck.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Hydro-1 spokesperson Tiziana Pacheca Rosa says, hang on, they're working on it. If you're still without power at this time, hopefully you had an emergency preparedness kit. The ice storm may have passed, but heavy snow isn't done yet. Lake effect squalls from hereon and Georgian Bay will keep snow falling for days, causing white out conditions. Police are telling people to stay home in some areas, but if you do have to go out, constable James Dixon with York Region Police says,

Remember, speed maximums that are posted are for ideal weather conditions, and that's not what we're going to be seeing. air has plunged temperatures across southern Ontario, and it's expected to last a few days. At minus 9, Toronto is expected to have the coldest New Year's Day in a decade. Colin Butler, CBC News, London, Ontario. RCMP in Saskatchewan say one person is dead and three others are injured after a shooting on Big Island Cree Nation, about 200 kilometers north of Lloydminster.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Two suspects were last seen on an ATV. Police are advising residents to find a safe location and lock their doors and not give away police locations during the search for the suspects. The high-speed rail network connecting the UK with much of Europe is resuming some services after a power issue forced Eurostar to shut down its channel tunnel for most of the day, leaving thousands stranded ahead of the new year. The rail network is urging passengers to postpone their trips, warning of significant delays. John Northcott reports.
Starting point is 00:02:27 We were supposed to leave at 824 this morning and it is now 1232. Just one of the tens of thousands of Eurostar passengers who spent the day frustrated on both sides of the English Channel. Officials say a problem with the power supply meant the trains couldn't leave and some were even stuck on route with delays of up to five hours and passengers left without food or water
Starting point is 00:02:52 and a dwindling supply of toilet paper. And we're stuck. The shuttle, which can't. carries cars and trucks was interrupted as well, creating traffic jams around Dover and Folkston in southeast England. The Eurostar Company says they hope to have full service resumed tomorrow, but are advising people, if travelers don't already have a reservation, they're warned not to even show up at the station.
Starting point is 00:03:15 John Northcott, CBC News, London. The U.S. appears to be ramping up its so-called war on drugs. It's been targeting boats off the coast of Venezuela. it claims are being used to smuggle drugs into the U.S. Now, President Donald Trump is talking about what's believed to be his first American operation inside Venezuela. Willie Lowry has the details. There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs. After months of escalation, the U.S. struck Venezuela earlier this month,
Starting point is 00:03:48 hitting a port facility on the coast. U.S. President Donald Trump says it's where alleged drug boats are loaded up, before shipping off for various parts of the world. U.S. media say a strike was carried out by the CIA using drones. The strike appears to have taken place just before Christmas. Democratic Senator Chris Coon says he's stunned by the escalation. Frankly, it's pretty stunning that President Trump would reveal a covert action like this by bragging about it. The Trump administration says that it's at war with South American drug cartels.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. The United Arab Emirates says it's withdrawing its remaining forces from Yemen. It follows Saudi airstrikes on Yemen's port city of Mukawa over what Saudi Arabia says was a weapons shipment for UAE-backed separatists. Saudi allies then issued an ultimatum, giving the Emirates 24 hours to leave. The UAE isn't saying yet when its pullout will begin. And that is your world this hour.
