There are two kinds of Canadians, those who feel something when they hear this music.
And those who've been missing out so far.
I'm Chris Howden.
And I'm Neil Kuksal.
We are the co-hosts of As It Happens.
And every day we speak with people at the center of the day's most hard-hitting, heartbreaking,
and sometimes hilarious news stories.
Also, we have puns.
Here Why As It Happens is one of Canada's longest running in most beloved shows.
You can find us wherever you get your podcasts.
From CBC News, The World is Our. I'm Karen Howerlock.
RCMP in Saskatchewan say one person is dead and three others are injured after a shooting on Big Island Cree Nation, about 300 kilometers northwest of Saskatoon.
Two suspects were last seen on an ATV. Police are advising residents to find a safe location and lock their doors.
Thousands of people are still without electricity across Ontario after being hit by freezing rains, strong,
winds and heavy snow. Police are warning people to stay off the roads. And as Colin Butler
reports, hydro crews are working around the clock. So it is all hands on deck. Hydro 1
spokesperson Tiziana Pacheca Rosa says hang on, they're working on it. If you're still without power
at this time, hopefully you had an emergency preparedness kit and you're prepared to shelter in place.
The ice storm may have passed, but heavy snow isn't done yet. Lake effect squalls from here on
and Georgian Bay will keep snow falling for days, causing white-out conditions.
Police are telling people to stay home in some areas,
but if you do have to go out, Constable James Dixon with York Region Police says,
take it slow.
Remember, speed maximums that are posted are for ideal weather conditions,
and that's not what we're going to be seeing.
Arctic air has plunged temperatures across southern Ontario,
and it's expected to last a few days.
At minus 9, Toronto is expected to have the coldest New Year's Day in a decade.
Colin Butler, CBC News, London, Ontario.
The high-speed rail network connecting the UK with much of Europe
is resuming some services after a power issue forced Eurostar
to shut down its channel tunnel for most of the day,
stranding thousands just ahead of the new year.
The rail network is urging people still hoping to travel
to postpone any new trips.
John Northcott has more.
We were supposed to leave at 824 this morning,
and it is now 1232.
Just one of the tens of thousands of Eurostar passengers who spent the day frustrated on both sides of the English Channel.
Officials say a problem with the power supply meant the trains couldn't leave and some were even stuck on route with delays of up to five hours
and passengers left without food or water and a dwindling supply of toilet paper.
I was stuck.
The shuttle, which carries cars and trucks, was interrupted as well, creating traffic jams around Dover and Fokston in southeast England.
The Eurostar company says they hope to have full service resumed tomorrow,
but are advising people, if travelers don't already have a reservation,
they're warned not to even show up at the station.
John Northcott, CBC News, London.
Protesters are flooding the streets of Tehran for a third day.
Iranians are demonstrating against worsening inflation
and the devaluation of the country's currency.
The protests began Sunday after shopkeepers in Tehran's Grand Bazaar staged a strike when the Iranian Real hit a record low against the U.S. dollar.
Iran's government says it's listening.
The U.S. appears to be ramping up its vendetta against Venezuela.
After targeting boats off the country's coast, it claims are being used to smuggle drugs into the U.S., President Donald Trump is talking about what's believed to be his first American operation inside.
Venezuela. Willie Lowry has the details.
There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs.
After months of escalation, the U.S. struck Venezuela earlier this month, hitting a port facility
on the coast. U.S. President Donald Trump says it's where alleged drug boats are loaded up
before shipping off for various parts of the world. U.S. media say a strike was carried out by the
CIA using drones. The strike appears to have taken place just before Christmas.
Democratic Senator Chris Kuhn says he's stunned by the escalation.
Frankly, it's pretty stunning that President Trump would reveal a covert action like this by bragging about it.
The Trump administration says that it's at war with South American drug cartels.
Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington.
And that is your world is hour.
