From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Karen Hauerlock. At least one person is dead and three others are injured after a shooting on a First Nation in Saskatchewan. RCMP are searching for two people considered armed and dangerous. Alexander Silberman has details.
Starting point is 00:00:51 RCMP say the community of Big Island Lake Cree Nation near the Alberta border is under a dangerous person's warning. People in the community are being told to find a safe location immediately and lock their doors. Larry Wapiscaquan says his son, Neil, was shot and killed early Tuesday morning. And we're about to sleep when my brother called me and told me that my son got shot. Wapistoquan says RCNP were on scene, attempted CPR, but were unable to save his son's life. He says others were shot and taken to hospital. RCMP say they do not have specific details about the victim's injury. or how many require hospital treatment.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Police are working to determine if the shooting is random or targeted. They say the two suspects are armed with a gun and were last seen riding an ATV. Seven health care facilities are now on lockdown as the search continues. Alexander Silberman, CBC News, Edmonton. The family of a couple from Gattano, Quebec, found dead in the Dominican Republic on Boxing Day are looking for answers about what happened. Patricia Sobe says her aunt and uncle, both in their 50s, had felt unwell but were healthy enough to face-time the family Christmas Day. She says authorities have not released a cause of death but, say, violence or suicide are not involved.
Starting point is 00:02:13 There is growing unrest in Iran over the state of the country's economy. Protests that began with shopkeepers in Tehran last weekend are spreading to other cities in the country. Canada is home to hundreds of thousands of Iranians and, as Yasmine, Renair reports, many are watching anxiously. In several Iranian cities, thousands are protesting the country's dire economic situation after the Iranian Rial hit a record low against the U.S. dollar Sunday. The currency has lost its value. Nader Habibi, a professor of Middle Eastern economics at Brandeis University near Boston,
Starting point is 00:02:52 says Iran's economy has been struggling for years under the weight of severe international sanctions. Inflation then surged in recent months. Habibi says there's a strong belief that Iranian government's mismanagement has pushed the country to the brink. Many people hold a portion of their wealth in gold and silver and US dollars. Starting point is 00:03:15 Iranian Canadians like Alireza Tabrizi who owns a bakery in North Vancouver say they're watching anxiously. Iran's government says it recognizes the demonstrations and will seek dialogue with protest leaders. Yasm Ganea, CBC News, Vancouver. Emergency officials in B.C. say flooding from extreme weather has washed out some roads on Haida Gouai. Residents are being told to avoid any back roads or non-essential travel.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Catherine Garrett has more. Over the last 48 hours, an atmospheric river rushed into the island, washing out a portion of this road and isolating both sides from each other. People have spoken to are concerned about the impact this will have on emergency health service. as well as things like fresh groceries and gas as it operates as sort of a lifeline between dodging geats, Skagit and Masset. There's no timeline on a fix. This has been closed for about a five-kilometer stretch right in the middle of the island near Jungle Beach. We are still waiting on more updates from authorities as to when this will reopen. Catherine Garrett, CBC News, Haida Gwai.
Starting point is 00:04:22 That same weather system also brought heavy rain to parts of the northern coast. Flooding closed a stretch of Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Terrace. Israel is banning several humanitarian organizations from Gaza as of New Year's Day. They include Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF.
