Starting point is 00:00:30 From CBC News, The World This Hour, I'm Taranjit Parmar. The city of Calgary is considering the complete replacement of a major water main that broke last night and flooded a neighborhood. About 60% of the city's water flows through this main. Another catastrophic break happened on the exact same road in June 2024. Mayor Jeremy Farquist says that the city has been monitoring that pipe since last year's incident, and crews are working around the clock to fix that break. Our council is taking bold action to ensure that our city administration is held accountable, but that we're also funding the needed improvements,
Starting point is 00:01:08 as well as better improving the governance model. The pipes are one question, but also the people and the organization need to be improved. Water restrictions and a boil water advisory is an effect for parts of Calgary. The city is deploying water wagons to affected communities. Hockey Canada has announced that 25 players, selected to play for Canada at the Milan Cortina Olympics. Mark Stone, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Nick Suzuki, London, Ontario.
Starting point is 00:01:38 The names were announced by minor hockey players from Hockey Calgary. Six of the players were announced before today, including Sydney Crosby, who helped Canada win Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014. The Sochi games were the last time NHL players were at the Olympics. National Hockey League players were first allowed to compete in the 1998 Nagano games in Japan. Since then, Canada's men have captured three Olympic gold medals in the sport. Team Canada is set to play its first game against the Czech Republic on February 12th. Canada wraps up its preliminary round tonight at the World Junior Hockey Championships,
Starting point is 00:02:14 with the Canadian team looking to ring in the new year by clinching their group facing off with Finland. The juniors have already qualified for the quarterfinals, which gets underway Friday. Canada has failed to medal at the championship for the past two years. Global Affairs Canada is now confirming that Canadians are among those injured in a train crash in Peru. It was a head-on collision near the country's most popular tourist attraction, Machu Picchu. A train driver died and at least 30 people on board were hurt. Global Affairs is not saying how many Canadians were among them. them but is offering its sympathies and working with local officials.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Chinese President Xi Jinping is telling Taiwan, resistance is futile. In his New Year's message, Xi says China and Taiwan share a bond of blood and kinship and that reunification was inevitable. Beijing has long claimed sovereignty over the self-governing island, with China just wrapping up what it's calling, successful military drills to bolster its claim. As Canadians welcome 2026, the Governor General reflects on the past year and looks ahead with hope for the nation. In her New Year message to Canadians, Mary Simon highlights the courage and unity shown by communities across the country. This past year, I witnessed extraordinary solidarity unfold across our country in the unity of
Starting point is 00:03:50 communities affected by wildfires. In your unprecedented, economic cooperation and in the revitalization of indigenous cultures and languages. In 2025, I saw Canada as a nation that is courageous, inclusive, and committed to building peace. Simon also sends her best wishes for joy, health, and peace to all Canadians as we start the new year. And the latest appointments to the Order of Canada have been announced. Beluga in the deep blue sea. Among them, children's entertainer Rafi. He's being promoted to the highest level, companion of the order.
