A New Year's Eve party turned deadly last night in the Swiss Alps as a fire ripped through a bar in the ski resort town of Grand Montana. We have identified 100 or so injured people significantly in many cases and sadly several dozen people are presumed to have died. A Swiss police spokesman just updated the media on the train. tragedy, but investigators still don't have specific numbers. However, they don't believe the fire was an attack. A reception center and helpline have been established for families who are impacted by the tragedy. It happened in the heart of the Swiss Alps, just 40 kilometers north of the famous Matterhorn. And we're following a developing story in Toronto. One of the Union Pearson
Starting point is 00:01:23 Express trains that connects downtown Toronto with Pearson Airport has crashed near the Atobico North Go station. It happened just after 10 o'clock last night. CBC technician Sam McNulty was on board the train when it crashed. She describes what happened. All of a sudden, like, there was like this honking repeatedly, and then all of a sudden, long honk, and then a big crash, and we were all just kind of like jolted forward, and you're like, what's going on? The doors open up to the cabin where all the drivers are, and they come out, and they're just giving us an update saying, like, you know, something was on the tracks and we crashed into it. So it's going to be a while. Toronto police say the train hit a vehicle that was on the tracks. The female driver of the
Starting point is 00:02:10 vehicle was arrested for impaired driving and has non-life-threatening injuries. There are no reported injuries to the train passengers. Avalanche Canada has announced the death of a snowmobiler in British Columbia. It happened Tuesday afternoon near Tumblr Ridge. Three snowmobilers were riding in the bull moose area when one person was caught and buried in an avalanche. The victim did not survive despite a quick response from their companion. There's a new mayor in the Big Apple this morning. Zoran Mamdani has been sworn in as mayor of New York. And that I will faithfully discharge.

Starting point is 00:03:03 Mamdani is a Democratic socialist who promised to make New York City more affordable. He's also the city's first Muslim mayor, and he took the oath of office on the Koran. The ceremony was held just after midnight in a decommissioned subway station. It is now 2026. In every part of Canada, New Year's Eve celebrations were held from coast to coast to coast. In downtown Toronto, the CBC's Adrian Arsano and David Common welcome midnight with singer Jan Arden. Three, two, one, happy New Year!
