Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude fayne and happy new year a new year's eve party turned deadly last night in the swiss alps as a fire ripped through a bar in the ski resort town of kong we have identified a hundred or so injured people significantly in many cases and sadly several dozen people are presumed to have died a swiss police Commander says the deaths are several tens of people and that work is underway to identify the victims and inform their families. However, they don't believe the fire was an attack. A reception center and helpline have been established for families who are impacted by this tragedy. And we're following a developing story in Toronto. One of the Union Pearson Express trains, which connects downtown
Starting point is 00:01:19 Toronto with Pearson Airport, was involved in a collision near the Atobico North Go station. It happened just after 10 o'clock last night. CBC technician Sam McNulty was on board the train when it crashed. She described what happened. All of a sudden, like, there was like this honking repeatedly, and then all of a sudden, long honk, and then a big crash, and we were all just kind of like jolted forward, and you're like, what is it going on?
Starting point is 00:01:46 The doors open up to the cabin where all the drivers are, and they come out, and they're just giving us an update saying, like, you know, something was on the tracks, and we crashed into it, so it's going to be a while. Toronto police say the train hit a vehicle that was on the tracks. The female driver of that vehicle was arrested for impaired driving and has non-life-threatening injuries. There are no reported injuries to train passengers.

That was the countdown in St. John's last night on the live Cross Canada special broadcast on CBC, hosted by Adrian Arsenal and Jan Arden, the program featured reporters and communities from across the country. And finally, an important win for Canada's juniors at the WIHF World Championship in St. Paul, Minnesota, last night. And Canada wins it by a final score of 7 to 4. Team Canada beat Finland, clinching top spot in their group. Canada will now place Slovakia in the quarterfinals, which begin on Friday.
