from cbc news the world this hour i'm claude fagg and happy new year we begin in switzerland where dozens of people are dead following an explosion and fire at a ski resort in the swiss alps the incident occurred inside a well-known bar at the upscale cron montana resort at least 100 other people are reportedly injured the cbc's john northcott has the latest from london
A social media post shows the panic on the streets late at night of the Swiss resort town.
According to police, the number of dead is being described as dozens.
However, some local media are reporting the number of 40 killed.
Officials are confirming that some 100 were taken to hospitals.
So many injured, in fact, many suffering from burns that they had to be taken to hospitals around the country.
Officials say there is a major response underway with police, fire,
and rescue teams on the ground.
Swiss authorities are known for prioritizing
and forming the families of the dead
in cases like this, and hence say
it is too early to provide further details.
However, they do admit that
because the resort area of Crenz, Montana,
is known for its world-class
ski runs and is such a magnet
for international tourists,
the number of dead could likely be
from many countries.

Some Calgary residents are
kicking off 2026, a big
like its 2024 all over again. The city is now dealing with its second water main break at the same
location in 16 months. The CBC's Anis Hadari has the latest. This is a big water main break. It's
Calgary's largest water main feeder in its network. There are alternative sources of water,
but they can't supply as much. So what this break means is there are now restrictions on the whole
city around outdoor water use. All residents are being asked to minimize their use of water as well.
flush less, wash less. This is also not the first time this has happened. It seems like this is the same
water feeder Maine in the same area that saw the same type of catastrophe in June 2024. So this is a bit of
deja vu for nearby residents. I don't know why the city is having such a problem being at a second
time. Why is it happening? Again? Truly, like again. So, but I mean, what do we have? Three weeks of
minus 17, minus 20.
There are more details certainly to come as repairs continue.
And he said RECBC News, Calgary.
Pope Leo celebrated New Year's Day mass in St. Peter's Basilica today
by delivering a special noontime prayer calling for peace
and singling out countries impacted by conflict.
Leo mentioned that January 1st marks the church's World Day of Peace.
It's now 2026 right across Canada from coast to coast to coast.
The new year arrived first in Newfoundland.
Five, four, three, two, one.
Happy New Day!
That was the countdown in St. John's last night on the live Cross Canada special
broadcast on CBC television.
And that is your world this hour.
For CBC News, I'm Claude Fagg.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
