A New Year's Eve party turned deadly last night in the Swiss Alps.
After a fire and explosion at a bar in a ski resort town of Cranes.
It happened in the heart of the Swiss Alps, just 40 kilometers north of the famous Matterhorn.
At a news conference in the past hour, police updated the fire saying about 40 people are dead with 150.
others injured. Many of the victims are reportedly aged between 16 and 26. It happened in the heart
of the Swiss Alps, and authorities say they believe the majority of those killed are from the
international community, but there is no word at this time if any Canadians were involved.
The Canadian Embassy in Switzerland extended its sympathies to the families and members of those
involved. To Amsterdam, a major fire that ignited at a historic von der Kolkirk church overnight
has forced dozens of residents in the area to evacuate their homes.
The church dates back to 1880 and is a popular tourist attraction that was most recently being used as a venue for concerts and other events.
According to local authorities, the church was likely hit by fireworks and the structure has been destroyed.
Police officers in the Netherlands say that they were pelted with fireworks and faced an unprecedented amount of violence.

Ukraine's president says a peace agreement to end the war with Russia is nearly complete,
but warns that it will not make a deal at any cost.
Meanwhile, Russia's president says at his end of the year address that victory would be achieved.

While many around the world celebrated the new year with the sound of fireworks,
for many across Ukraine, it was the same.

fired overnight, accusing Russia of bringing war into 2026. In his end-of-year address, he said a peace deal
brokered with the United States is 90% complete. Ten percent remains, and that is far more
than just numbers. Those 10% contain, in fact, everything. Those the 10% percent,
that will determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe, and how people will live.
Issues to be resolved include possible territorial concessions
and ironclad security guarantees provided by the US and allies here in Europe.
