from cbc news the world this hour i'm mike miles officials in switzerland are calling it one of the country's worst tragedies
people say around 40 people were killed and over 100 others injured many severely in a barfire new year's eve it happened in kronmentana a resort in the heart of the swiss helps authorities say many of the victims were young and from many countries
there's no word yet if any Canadians were involved or what caused the fire.
But officials insist it was not an attack.
The U.S. military says it has conducted more lethal strikes on boats from Venezuela.
It says the attacks again targeted what it calls narco-terrorists.
The Coast Guard is searching for people who jumped overboard and may have survived.
Willie Lowry reports.
The Trump administration ended the year with yet another strike on what it says are alleged drugboats,
This time killing five people.
Footage released by the Defense Department shows a boat bobbing in open waters before a fireball engulfs it.
The day before that, the Pentagon says it killed three alleged drug smugglers,
part of the Trump administration's stated aim to ramp up pressure on South American drug cartels
and the Venezuelan government of Nicolas Maduro.
Since September, the U.S. has launched more than 30 strikes on alleged drugboats.
Earlier this month, Washington also struck Venezuelan.
Venezuelan soil, hitting a dock, it says, was being used by cartels.
In a New Year's Eve address, Maduro attempted to put a brave face on.
Saying the country was in an optimal position to address the current challenges.

In New York City, this is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime.
Zoran Mamdani makes history as the new mayor.
He took the oath of office just after midnight.
at a historic decommissioned subway station in Manhattan.
Mondani is the first Muslim mayor in the city's history.
He's also the youngest mayor to take the job in more than a century.
Starting this year, a famed cemetery in Paris
is offering up the chance to eventually be buried
among some of the most distinguished people in history.
Ross Cullen explains.
Well, I'm here in Pellashez Cemetery,
one of the most famous burial sites in Paris,
with some celebrated names among those who are interred here.
including Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Frederick Schopper.
But less well-known people will have the chance to be buried among the illustrious tombs.
The city authorities have come up with an idea to help restore forgotten and overgrown graves
by inviting the public to clean up the tombstones.
If your name is drawn out of the hat, then you will have to pay just over $4,500 to secure the spot.
You will then have six months to restore the dilapidated tomb,
and then you can purchase a grave in the cemetery.
The Paris mayor's office said the initiative
was a compromise between respecting the dead
and giving Parisians a chance to be buried in their own city.
