Starting point is 00:00:30 from cbc news the world this hour i'm mike miles switzerland's president is calling it one of the worst tragedies in the country's history police confirm about 40 people were killed in a bar fire in the swiss alps new year's eve another 115 were injured many severely john northcott has details horrific stories of people trying to smash windows to escape from the basement club with a steep narrow staircase that made escape difficult But eyewitnesses suggest club staff carrying sparklers or flares may have ignited the club's ceiling. And then a catastrophic rapid spread of the fire trapped many, most of them, in their early 20s. Frantic parents arrived on the scene looking for their children as victims were laid out in the street and over 100 emergency personnel scrambled to rescue and treat the injury.
Starting point is 00:01:22 This man describes what he saw. We were able to help carrying, I don't want to say corpses. I think everyone who was out and kind of reactive survived, but carrying bodies out of the fire. Officials point out that the pain's taking process of not only identifying the dead, but officially determining the cause is underway and are asking for the public's patients.
Starting point is 00:01:45 John Northcott, CBC News, London. Manitoba Hydro says it's working to restore power to remote First Nation by tonight. Pimit Chikamak pre-nation lost electricity after a power line snapped in temperatures below minus 20 Sunday night. But thousands of residents say the urgency cannot be understated. Councillor Shirley Robinson is calling for more help from the province and from the feds.
Starting point is 00:02:09 We have two-month-old babies still waiting to be brought out that are trying to keep warm in their homes. Some generators are failing and water tanks and septic tanks are now frozen. New legislation in Ontario paving the way for Canadian workers to move more easily between provinces comes into effect today. Skilled workers in other provinces will be eligible to work in Ontario within 10 days of their credentials being verified. The law would apply to professions
Starting point is 00:02:37 such as engineers and healthcare workers. Ontario says the changes reduce internal trade barriers. One of the most celebrated classical musical performances was led by a Canadian this year. Yannik Nesit Sagan conducted the Vienna Philharmonic for its annual New Year's Day concert. Stephen Hoff has that story from Vienna.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Over 50 million people around the world watched and listened to the Vienna Philharmonics New Year's Day concert at the historic music variety in the center of Vienna. This year, it featured the performance of a waltz by Florence Price. The first time a composition by an African-American woman has been performed at the event. As you can imagine, is the greatest honor. That's Canadian Yanik Nizet Sagan, a Montrealer given the task to lead the famous performance. This year's concert aims to promote peace and mutual understanding. When we start listening to the same music, we feel we have more in common than our differences.
