Switzerland has begun five days of morning after what officials are calling one of the country's worst tragedies.
Police say at least 40 people are dead, over 115 others injured, many severely from a barfire New Year's Eve.
It happened in Cronmonton, a resort in the Swiss Alps.
authorities say many of the victims were young and from many countries.
There's no word yet if any Canadians were involved or what caused the fire.
But officials insist it was not an attack.
A remote First Nation in Manitoba is urging the federal government
deploy the military to help its residents.
Pima Chikamakri Nation lost electricity in the midst of a cold snap Sunday night.
Manitoba Hydro says power should return by tonight,
but the nation's chief warns once power is restored,
it could lead to burst pipes in flooding and the displacement of more people.
The U.S. military says it has conducted more lethal strikes on boats from Venezuela.
It says the attacks again targeted what it calls narco-terrorists.
Willie Lowry reports.
The Trump administration ended the year with yet another strike on what it says are alleged drugboats,
this time killing five people.
Footage released by the Defense Department shows a boat bobbing in open waters
before a fireball engulfs it.
The day before that, the Pentagon says it killed three alleged drug smugglers,
part of the Trump administration's stated aim
to ramp up pressure on South American drug cartels
and the Venezuelan government of Nicolas Maduro.
Since September, the U.S. has launched more than 30 strikes on alleged drugboats.
Earlier this month, Washington also struck Venezuelan soil,
hitting a dock, it says, was being used by cartels.
In a New Year's Eve address, Maduro,
attempted to put a brave face on, saying the country was in an optimal position to address
the current challenges. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington.
The Kremlin's insisting Russia will achieve victory in its war with Ukraine.
To back that claim, it fired dozens of drones into Ukraine overnight.
Still, both sides say talks to end the war are advancing, with Ukraine's president optimistic
a peace agreement is within reach.
William Denssela with details.
While many around the world celebrated the new year with the sound of fireworks, for many across Ukraine, it was the sound of attack drones.
Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelenskyy says more than 200 of them were fired overnight, accusing Russia of bringing war into 2026.
In his end of year address, he said a peace deal brokered with the United States is 90% complete.
10% remains, and that is far more than just.
numbers. Those 10% contain, in fact, everything. Those are the 10% that will determine the fate of
peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe, and how people will live. Issues to be resolved include
possible territorial concessions and ironclad security guarantees provided by the US and allies
here in Europe. William Denslow for CBC News, Brussels. And that is the world this hour. For

Thank you.
