Officials in Calgary say progress has been made to fix yesterday's catastrophic water main break. But emergency management chief, Susan Henry, says a boil water advisory remains in effect for parts of the city. This is the second major water main break in the city in two years. It led to a significant loss of water in the system, Henry is urging people to take steps to ensure the city continues to run smoothly. Run dishwashers and laundry only when necessary and with full loads. Keep showers to three

City officials say so far it is not seeing any real reduction in usage. In BC, a snowmobiler has died in an avalanche in the northern interior. Avalanche Canada reports three snowmobilers were riding on a mountainous area in the Tumblr Ridge area on Tuesday. It says the slide was triggered by a snowmobile from the base of the slope. No one else was injured. Tumblr Ridge is located about 175 kilometers northeast of Prince George. Manitoba Hydro says it has completed repairs to a down power line that,
Starting point is 00:01:53 has affected a remote First Nation for days. But it says bringing electricity back to thousands of residents will take time. Power has been out in the Pemichikimak, Cree Nation Sunday night. Those who did not evacuate have been dealt with frigid temperatures near minus 30. The nation's chief is warning of complications such as flooding and burst pipes. So Ron Madani is the new mayor of New York City. He was officially sworn in just after midnight and ceremonially inaugurated by Senator Bernie Sanders later in the day. Willie Lowry has more on his promises and the agenda.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Zora! Zoran Mamdani doubled down on his campaign promises, telling New Yorkers in his inaugural address that he would aggressively pursue his Democratic socialist agenda. I was elected as a Democratic socialist and I will govern as a Democratic socialist. Mumdani pledged to make public transit free for all New Yorkers and the city more affordable. The 34-year-old is the first Muslim mayor in the city's history and the youngest to take the job in more than a century,

Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. Switzerland has begun five days of morning, after what officials are calling, one of the country's worst tragedies. Police say at least 40 people are dead. Over 150 others injured, many severely, in a barfire on New Year's Eve. It happened in a resort in the Swiss Alps. Authorities say many of the victims were young, and from many countries, there is no word yet, if any, Canadians were involved. And that is your world this hour.
