He was officially sworn in just after midnight and ceremonially inaugurated by Senator Bernie Sanders later today. Later in the day, Willie Wally has more on his promises and the agenda.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Zoran! Zoran! Zoran! Mandani doubled down on his campaign. promises, telling New Yorkers in his inaugural address that he would aggressively pursue his democratic socialist agenda. I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist. Mumdani pledged to make public transit free for all New Yorkers and the city more affordable. The 34-year-old is the first Muslim mayor in the city's history and the youngest to take the job in more than a century, promising to look out for all New Yorkers. If you are a New Yorker, I am your mayor. Mamdani also promised to govern expansively and audaciously.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. The sound of fireworks in Amsterdam. Fire destroyed large parts of a historic church there. And local media reports say there is suspicion that church may have been hit by fireworks. It ripped through the popular 19th century. church shortly after midnight local time, flames spread quickly causing extensive damage. An official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Switzerland has begun five days of morning after what officials are calling, one of the country's worst tragedies. Police say at least 40 people are dead, over 115 others injured, many severely in a bar fire on New Year's Eve. It happened in a resort in the Swiss Alps. say many of the victims were young and from many other countries. Global Affairs Canada says it's not aware of any Canadians among those killed or hurt in the fire. Manitoba Hydro says it has completed repairs to a down power line that affected a remote First Nation for days.
Starting point is 00:02:48 But it says bringing electricity back to thousands of residents will take time. Power has been out in the Piment-Chickenwak-K-Nation since Sunday night, those who did not evacuate have dealt with frigid temperatures near minus 30. Reducing water use right now is critical. Officials in Calgary say progress has been made to fix yesterday's catastrophic water main break. But emergency management chief Susan Henry says a boil water advisory remains in effect for parts of the city. This is the second major water main break in the city in two years. It led to a significant loss of water in the system.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Henry is urging people to take steps to ensure the city continues to run smoothly. Run dishwashers and laundry only when necessary and with full loads. Keep showers to three minutes or less. Flesh toilets only when needed. These may seem like small actions, but they make a huge difference. City officials say so far it is not seeing any real reduction in usage. And that is your world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Wayne Tavito.
