Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. from cbc news the world this hour i'm wayne tibodeau the fire that killed 40 people in switzerland was set off by sparklers on champagne bottles investigators say they are also looking at whether building safety regulations were followed 115 people were injured many with severe burns tamara alteresco is at the site of the fire We are standing in front of what used to be Le Bar, La Constellation. We are in the middle, in the heart of the village of Grand Montana in the Swiss Alps, and people have been coming here all day to light candles, to drop flowers, and to pray, this is a very small village,
Starting point is 00:01:12 and most of the people who come here, even though it's very touristic here, are locals who are still awaiting to hear from friends, from loved ones, who have not been reached since the night of the fire. This is a very painful moment, and what struck is how young these people are. The bar was full that night. They were all celebrating New Year's. We know some are in hospital. They've been badly burned.
Starting point is 00:01:39 We don't know in what city, because the number of people that are injured is so massive that they had to transport them in other countries such as Italy, France, and Germany. This is Tamara Alterresco, Radio Canada, in Switzerland. and Secretary General says he's deeply concerned by Israel's move to ban dozens of aid groups from Gaza. In a statement Friday, Antonio Gattaris called for the measures to be reversed via a spokesperson. He said the move will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza already playing out. Israel says the ban groups failed to comply with new registration rules, which aim to prevent Hamas from infiltrating aid groups.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Officials in North Carolina say they have foiled a terrorist plot inspired by ISIS. He was preparing for jihad and innocent people were going to die. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson says the 18-year-old suspect had been radicalized online. He planned an attack on a grocery store and a fast food restaurant. Ferguson says the suspect then shared his plans with two FBI agents, who he believed were ISIS operatives. He said he was going to wear a Kevlar vest and attack people with knives and ham. And of course he talked about when he was going to carry out this attack, which was New Year's Eve.
Starting point is 00:02:59 The suspect was arrested on Wednesday and was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terror organization. While thousands of Ontario public sector workers are being called back to work full time, the provincial government insists it will boost local business and improve productivity, but many workers say that change will hurt their performance, not help it. Michelle Song reports. We are shut for nine months straight. Wayne Cowley owns a bar in downtown Toronto. His business took a major hit during the pandemic. And he since saw a lull in customers, as many people were still working from home.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Now, Cowley is looking forward to seeing Ontario Public Service Workers going back to the office full time. When everyone's moving, you're spending money. Good for businesses, but less so for employees. According to the union, representing half of Ontario Public Service workers, Opseu. J.P. Hornick is the union president. All of these people are more productive in a work from home or hybrid environment. When we also look at the type of office space they're returning to, it's not adequate. The province says they've reviewed all their offices and found the majority of them do have enough room. But the union says members tell them they're concerned about space.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Michelle Song, CBC News, Toronto. And Canada's juniors continue their quest for a medal tonight in Minnesota.
