U.S. President Donald Trump announcing that the U.S. military toppled the Venezuelan regime and had detained President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. They were flown to New York State, where they will be tried on drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit terrorism charges. And Trump says American forces will stay on the ground for now.

Trump says the U.S. will take over Venezuela's oil industry, which was nationalized in the 1970s. We built Venezuela oil industry with American talent, drive, and skill, and the socialist regime stole it from us. Longtime Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Cornino Machado said in a statement that Edmundo Gonzalez is prepared to lead a new government. It's widely believed that Gonzalez was the real winner of Venezuela's 24 national elections. But in the meantime, Maduro's vice president, Desi Rodriguez, went on national television and said Venezuela's only president is Nicholas Maduro. Jorge Berrera, CBC News,
Starting point is 00:02:09 Ottawa. Prime Minister Mark Carney has now reacted to the strikes calling Maduro's regime illegitimate and criminal. But he says Canada wants to see a Venezuelan-led transition to democracy. For most Venezuelan Canadians, Maduro's removal is happy news. They held rallies in several cities today to celebrate. Alexander Silberman has more. We're just relieved and happy. Carolyn Duron, one of dozens of Venezuelans celebrating in Montreal, came to Canada as a refugee eight years ago. She says she sought no other way to oust Maduro other than intervention by a foreign power. I feel like a lot of Venezuelas have been waiting this for a long time. Many Venezuelans in Canada are elated about the end of Maduro's grip on power. The socialist
Starting point is 00:02:56 President is accused of human rights abuses against political dissidents and staging sham elections. Ernesto Goudino is president of the Venezuelan Canadian Association of Calgary. Goudino says the removal of Maduro came as a surprise. We hope the democracy will go back to Venezuela. But with U.S. President Donald Trump planning to keep American forces in the country, many Venezuelan Canadians say they're also feeling cautious, waiting to see what happened. next. Alexander Silberman, CBC News, Edmonton. The British Defense Secretary says the UK has carried out airstrikes in Syria this weekend, targeting an underground ISIS facility. John Healy says the facility
Starting point is 00:03:40 was most likely being used to hold explosives or weapons, along with French aircraft, the UK planes bombed access tunnels. Part of what Healy describes as the UK's effort to stamp out any resurgence of ISIS. As Calgarians continue to wait for a major water main to be repaired, the city's mayor is promising that a long-term solution is coming. The cause of the break still isn't known, and while it's being fixed, people in the city are being told to conserve water wherever they can. Mayor Jeremy Farkas says this part of the city's water infrastructure is a ticking time bomb that needs to be completely replaced. We're going to have to build that replacement pipe faster than we've ever built anything before
Starting point is 00:04:22 and when you're going to need to do it right the first time. Repairs are expected to be done in about 10 days. Four neighborhoods are under boil water advisories. And Environment Canada is warning those living in coastal areas of southern BC that they could see flooding this weekend. That's because of a combination of unusually high tides and a storm that could bring fierce wind. The highest risk of flooding will come on Sunday.
