Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, it's the world this hour. I'm Joe Cummings. Two days after the United States took the president of Venezuela into custody, U.S. President Donald Trump is laying out his immediate plans for the South American country and beyond. Katie Simpson reports. Right now, what we want to do is fix up the oil, fix up the country. President Donald Trump just said it out loud.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Those are his priorities for the weeks ahead in Venezuela now that Nicholas Maduro is in U.S. custody. He's demanding full and complete access to the country telling reporters on board Air Force One the Trump administration will, in fact, run Venezuela. Don't ask me who's in charge because I'll give you an answer and it'll be very controversial. What does that mean? It means we're in charge. And he again threatened Delci Rodriguez, the Maduro ally now leading the regime, demanding she cooperate or else.
Starting point is 00:01:31 I just say that she will face a situation probably worse than Maduro. It was a remarkable question and answer session. Trump openly threatened other countries as well, saying a military operation in Colombia sounds good to him. And he repeated his threats aimed at Greenland. Katie Simpson, CBC News, Washington. As for Nicholas Maduro, he is scheduled to make his first court appearance later today. Maduro and his wife are set to appear before a judge in New York at noon eastern.
Starting point is 00:02:04 He's accused of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking. Maduro's lawyers are expected to contest the legality of his arrest, arguing that he's immune from prosecution as a sovereign head of state. Incidentally, Prime Minister Mark Carney has spoken with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado. She is at the forefront of an ongoing campaign to bring democracy to Venezuela. Karni's office says he told her that Canada supports a peaceful negotiated transition process led by the Venezuelan people. Machado, whose whereabouts are unknown, says she remains in contact with Karni and Canadian officials. Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, is named Christia Freeland, his new economic development advisor.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Canada's former Deputy Prime Minister has Ukrainian heritage and speaks the language. Canada's former Deputy Prime Minister left the Liberal Cabinet in September of last year to act as Canada's special envoy to Ukraine, but she is technically still a member of Canadian Parliament. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Carney is at the table as the Coalition of Countries Supporting Ukraine meets this week in Paris. The coalition is looking to map out a credible path toward a possible ceasefire with Russia. Marie Brewster has the latest. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, speaking after meeting with senior defense and security advisors from 18 nations who are part of the Coalition of the Willing. Their mission is to hammer out the details of security guarantees Ukraine will need going into possible peace talks with Russia. I think the coalition of the willing is the greatest success of Ukrainian foreign policy since the start of the war.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Matt Schmidt is a national security expert and former instructor at the U.S. Army War College. He says, solid military commitments are essential in the absence of Ukraine joining NATO. Russia has made Ukraine's exclusion from the Western Military Alliance, one of its preconditions for peace talks. What's going to be key over the next few days is the shape of those security guarantees provided to Ukraine by Europe and Canada. Will they be credible enough to deter Russia from just taking a breather and then restarting the war at some point in the future?
Starting point is 00:04:19 Marie Brewster, CBC News, Ottawa. There will be no gold medal for Canada at this year's World Junior Hockey Tournament. It's a Czech Republic last night beating Canada 6 to 4. That loss means that Canada will be playing in the bronze medal game against Finland. That game is set for this afternoon. As for the gold medal matchup, it'll be Sweden and the Czech Republic. That goes tonight. And that is the world this hour.
Starting point is 00:04:53 For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
