Starting point is 00:00:30 capture a kidnapping and vowed that Venezuela would never become a U.S. colony, the acting president of Venezuela is now softening her tone. Venezuela reaffirma its vocation of peace and of convivvencia pacific. That is a statement from Delci Rodriguez being read aloud in a televised address to the nation. Rodriguez saying she wants to collaborate with the Trump administration and wants a respectful relationship with the United States. Her comments follow a new round of three. threats from the U.S. President. Willie Lowry has more now from Washington.
Starting point is 00:01:05 President Donald Trump has been unequivocal. He expects Venezuela's Delsi Rodriguez to fall in line and work with Washington. The consequences he said if she doesn't would be worse than what befell Nicholas Maduro. And his attention isn't solely on Venezuela. He said Cuba was ready to fall and he mold military action in Colombia. Colombia is very sick to run by a sick man. who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States, and he's not going to be doing it very long, let me tell you. Trump also said Mexico needed to take charge of its borders and do a better job of cracking down on illegal drugs.
Starting point is 00:01:43 He said the U.S. would be willing to help out if necessary. Willie Lowry, CBC News, Washington. As for Nicholas Maduro, he is scheduled to make his first court appearance later today. Maduro and his wife are set to appear before a judge in New York City at noon eastern. Maduro's lawyers are expected to contest the legality of the arrest, arguing that he is immune from prosecution as a sovereign head of state. Meanwhile, Denmark is issuing another strong response to the U.S. President's ongoing musings about a possible American takeover of Greenland. Crystal Gamansing reports.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Greenland is rich in natural resources. It is also strategically located in the Arctic, along with Russia and China. that have increased military and commercial activities in the region. Alex Younger is the former head of MI6, the British intelligence agency. Denmark, of course, is a member of NATO and has made it entirely clear that it's ready to cooperate with the US in any way, as long as that's under a Danish flag. So there's something also of the sort of geopolitical ego about this, which I do find pretty unsettling. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Friedrich Nielsen posted on social media saying,
Starting point is 00:02:56 we have taken responsibility for the security of the North Atlantic and not least of North America. The immediate and repeated rhetoric from the United States is completely and utterly unacceptable. Danish Prime Minister Meda Friedrichson also took to social media urging the United States to stop the threats. Kristolgamansing, CBC News, London. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has named Christia Freeland his new economic development advisor. Canada's former deputy prime minister has Ukrainian heritage
Starting point is 00:03:31 and speaks Ukrainian. Freeland left the Liberal Cabinet in September of last year to act as Canada's special envoy to Ukraine. Boil water advisories for the neighborhoods affected by last week's water main break in Calgary have now been lifted. This says safety testing continues on the pipe that is essential to the distribution of water to most of the city. Advisors have been in place now since early last week, when the water main ruptured for a second time in 18 months. Calgarians are being urged to continue, however, to conserve water, so demand doesn't outstrip supply. There will be no gold medal for Canada. This year's World Junior Hockey Championships. In Minnesota last night, that's the Czech Republic beating Canada 6 to 4. So the Czechs will play
Starting point is 00:04:21 Sweden tonight in the gold medal game. while Canada will play Finland for the bronze medal. That's this afternoon. It's a third year running the Czech Republic is not Canada out of gold medal contention. And that is a world this hour. For CBC News, I'm Joe Cummings.
