Osted Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro made his first court appearance in New York after being captured in a U.S. military operation Saturday.
Starting point is 00:00:46 He pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges. Karen Paul's has the latest. Number one terrorist. Nicholas Maduro and his wife arrived at a New York courthouse early this morning. President Donald Trump has used criminal charges. to justify his capture and removal to the United States, but his lawyers are expected to argue the legality of his arrest, saying he's immune from prosecution as a head of state. The U.S. does not recognize that. In accordance with Rule 39 of the country,
Starting point is 00:01:15 in New York, the U.N. is holding an emergency session, Chief Antonio Guterres, saying there must be respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that the U.S. had set a dangerous precedent for the world order. But this man in Baltimore, a former prisoner of Maduro, is relieved. Having lived that wrongful detention, human rights violations, this is something that would need to happen in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Maduro loyalists are still in charge in Venezuela, although Trump says the U.S. is running the country. Karen Paul's, CBC News, Washington.
Starting point is 00:01:51 We need to push back and let him know that this is not for him. Danes in Copenhagen are expressing alarm over Donald Trump's repeated suggestions the U.S. could take control of Greenland. Trump said on Air Force One overnight that he will revisit the possibility in a few weeks. Greenland is rich in natural resources. It's also strategically located in the Arctic. It's self-governing but falls under the administration of Denmark. Danish Prime Minister Meta Fredrickson posted to social media this morning, telling the U.S. to stop the threats and that the people of Greenland
Starting point is 00:02:26 have said the territory is not for sale. Russia has launched its first strike of the year on Ukraine's capital. Explosions could be heard in Kiev overnight. Officials say at least two people are dead. Ukraine's State Emergency Service says one of the strikes set a medical facility on fire. A body was later found inside. Several pockets of the Kiev region have no power.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Prime Minister Carney is on his way to Paris to discuss that war. He'll take part in a meeting of more than 30 countries committed to supporting Ukraine. Canada recently announced a new round of financing and loan guarantees for Kiev worth $2.5 billion. And Canadian MP, Christia Freeland, has a new role working for the Ukrainian government. She'll serve as an economic development advisor to President Lodomier Zelensky. Freeland has long been one of Canada's most vocal opponents of Russia's invents. Asian. Catherine Tunney reports. Starting point is 00:03:30 says his country needs to strengthen internal resilience, and he's turning to a former liberal cabinet minister to help do that. A source close to Christian Freeland says Zelensky asked her to take on the new role on December 22nd, and she went to Prime Minister Mark Carney on Christmas Eve. Freeland already
Starting point is 00:03:46 serves as Canada's special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine. It's unclear if she'll keep the two jobs. The Ukraine position is not full-time and unpaid, the source added. Conservatives are publicly calling on Freeland either step down as MP for her Toronto riding or give up the job advising a foreign government. The source said more news on her plans to leave politics is coming soon, but no date has been set.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Her resignation would trigger a by-election in University Rosdale, considered a safe liberal seat. Catherine Tenney, CBC News, Ottawa. A court in France has found 10 people guilty of cyberbullying the president's wife. The court says they spread false information about Brigitte MacArthur. Crans' gender and sexuality. That included claims that she was born male. One defendant has been sentenced to six months in prison, while eight others have been handed suspended sentences.
