Mike drop. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings with prime minister mark carney at the table the more than 30 countries that make up the coalition of the willing are meeting today in paris for talks on ending the war in ukraine Ukrainian president vladimir zalensky is looking for long-term security guarantees but as we hear now from Crystal Gamansing, there are other issues to address. At Palis-Illise, French President Emmanuel Macron greeted attendees. Previous coalition meetings have resulted in more funding and military equipment for Ukraine. Today, leaders will review the 20-point peace plan revised by Ukraine and the U.S.
Starting point is 00:01:20 It includes a demilitarized zone in the Donbass, but raises questions about control. as does a proposal by the U.S. that it, along with Russia and Ukraine, would jointly operate the Zeparizia power plant. The largest nuclear facility in Europe is currently occupied by Russian forces. The United States's two main negotiators will be on hand, Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff, and the President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegzat led the two-hour briefing, which left Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer with more questions than answers. Their plan for the U.S.
Starting point is 00:02:26 US running Venezuela is vague based on wishful thinking and unsatisfying. I did not receive any assurances that we would not try to do the same thing in other countries. And in conclusion, when the United States engages in this kind of regime change and so-called nation-building, it always ends up hurting the United States. As for Nicholas Maduro, he made his first court appearance yesterday in New York City and pleaded not guilty to a range of charges, including terrorism and drug trafficking. Maduro also declared himself to be a prisoner of war. In the middle of all this, the White House is now doubling down on President Donald Trump's ongoing insistence that Greenland eventually should become part of the United States. Karen Paul says

Stephen Miller, U.S. President Donald Trump's White House Deputy Chief of Staff. and Homeland Security Advisor responding to questions about his wife's social media post just hours after the U.S. incursion into Venezuela. It had a map of Greenland, covered with an American flag, and the caption, soon. The real question is, by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for 300 years. Danish Prime Minister Mehta Frederiksen says Denmark has always been a good ally of the United States,
Starting point is 00:03:56 But, she adds, we will not accept a situation where we in Greenland are threatened. Trump recently appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as an envoy to Greenland. Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, plans to visit Greenland's capital Nook sometime this month to open a consulate. Karen Paul's, CBC News, Washington. At the same time, a number of European leaders are pushing back today against the U.S. threats against Greenland. A joint statement has been issued, reaffirming that the strategic mineral-rich Arctic Island quote belongs to its people. The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Britain all joined the Danish Prime Minister in defending Greenland's sovereignty. And that is the World This Hour.
