Starting point is 00:00:00 Sabrina stepping into special crimes, where the stakes hit harder. We want to find the person who did this so it doesn't happen again. But this time, she can't do it alone. I was brought here to be a partner. Partners need trust. And must learn to put her faith in others. One last time, are you with us? I didn't come this far.
Starting point is 00:00:21 To only come this far. Allegiance. New season. Watch free on CBC Gem. from cbc news it's the world this hour i'm joe cummings with prime minister mark carney at the table the more than 30 countries that make up the coalition of the willing are meeting today in paris for talks on ending the war in ukraine ukrainian president bladimir zelensky is looking for long-term security guarantees
Starting point is 00:00:57 But as we hear now from Crystal Gamansing, there are still other key issues to address. At Palis-Lizé, French President Emmanuel Macron greeted attendees. Previous coalition meetings have resulted in more funding and military equipment for Ukraine. Today, leaders will review the 20-point peace plan revised by Ukraine and the U.S. It includes a demilitarized zone in the Donbass, but raises questions about confirmed. control, as does a proposal by the U.S. that it, along with Russia and Ukraine, would jointly operate the Zeparizia power plant. The largest nuclear facility in Europe is currently occupied by Russian forces. The United States's two main negotiators will be on hand, special envoy
Starting point is 00:01:46 Steve Whitkoff, and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Zelensky will have the backing of his allies from Europe and Canada, but there's no guarantee a consensus on how. how to move forward will be reached. Crystal Gamanssing, CBC News, London. Now, to Washington, where the Trump administration briefed congressional leaders last night on the military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hagezeth led the two-hour briefing, which left Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer with more questions than answers. Their plan for the U.S. running Venezuela is vague, based on wishful thinking, and unsatisfying.
Starting point is 00:02:34 I did not receive any assurances that we would not try to do the same thing in other countries. And in conclusion, when the United States engages in this kind of regime change and so-called nation building, it always ends up hurting the United States. As for Nicholas Maduro, he made his first court appearance yesterday in New York City and pleaded not guilty to a range of charges, including terrorism and drug trafficking. Maduro also declared himself to be a prisoner of war. In the middle of all this, the White House is doubling down on President Donald Trump's insistence that the U.S. needs to take control of Greenland. Karen Pauls has more.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Obviously, Greenland should be part of the United States. Stephen Miller, U.S. President Donald Trump's White House Deputy Chiefs, of staff and Homeland Security Advisor responding to questions about his wife's social media post just hours after the U.S. incursion into Venezuela. It had a map of Greenland, covered with an American flag, and the caption, soon. The real question is, by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for 300 years. Denmark has always been a good ally of the United States. But, she adds, we will not accept a situation where we in Greenland are threatened.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Trump recently appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as an envoy to Greenland. Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, plans to visit Greenland's capital, Nook, sometime this month, to open a consulate. Karen Paul's, CBC News, Washington. It's not the gold medal they were hoping for, but Team Canada did make it to the medal podium at this year's World Junior Hockey Tournament. Canada will leave this world junior championship with a bronze medal. In St. Paul, Minnesota, that's Canada beating Finland six to three to three to take home the bronze medal. Later, Sweden won gold by beating the Czech Republic 4-2 in the championship game. And that is a world this hour.
