Starting point is 00:00:30 ceasefire. French president, Emmanuel Macron, says the new commitments mean Ukraine can achieve peace with Russia without surrendering. France and the UK are promising to send troops after a peace deal is signed. And for the first time, US representatives also took part in talks with the coalition of the willing. We are here to mediate and help in the peace process and we're prepared to do anything necessary to get to that place.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Special envoy Steve Whitkoff says the U.S. President is strongly behind security protocols for Ukraine. On the sidelines of that meeting, the focus was on Greenland and Donald Trump's renewed threats to annex the island. Murray Brewster reports. This gathering in Paris was aimed at giving Ukraine concrete security commitments ahead of possible peace talks with Russia. But U.S. military action in Venezuela and the notion of Green's, Greenland, a territory of Denmark, a NATO country, might be next, have cast a long shadow
Starting point is 00:01:34 over the conference. Prime Minister Mark Carney. We stand with Denmark. We stand with Greenland. We're, you know, our closest partnership is with the United States and we'll work with everybody to make sure that we move forward together. Several coalition of the willing countries, including France, the UK, Germany, and Spain have released a joint statement saying Greenland's future belongs to the people of Greenland. The show of solidarity comes amid stark warnings from Denmark to take Donald Trump's threats seriously and that military action against Greenland would herald the end of NATO. Starting point is 00:02:15 Human rights groups in Iran say at least 25 people have been killed and more than a thousand arrested in protests. The demonstrations started in Tehran as a response to soaring inflation and the plunging value of the Iranian currency. The Iranian regime says the demonstrations are being provoked by foreign governments. White House officials say they'll meet with U.S. oil companies later this week. On the agenda, how to boost Venezuelan crude oil production and exports. Since the capture of leader Nicholas Maduro, the Trump administration has turned its eye to Venezuela's vast oil resources. Karen Pauls has more.
Starting point is 00:02:52 I'm also meeting with oil companies. Let's go. You know what that's about. President Donald Trump in a speech to Republican lawmakers Tuesday morning. A lot of oil to drill, which is going to bring down oil prices even further. Trump wants the U.S. oil industry to invest billions and be up and running in Venezuela within 18 months. Chevron is currently the only major American company operating in Venezuela's oil fields, the world's largest reserves of oil. It pumps out the same type of heavy oil produced in Western Canada. Speaking in Europe, Prime Minister,
Starting point is 00:03:26 Mark Carney says Canada remains a strong player in the global market. We've got competitive product and we've be diversifying our markets and that's one of the reasons why we signed the comprehensive MOU with Alberta. Carney adds he welcomes a functioning not corrupt Venezuela because it brings stability to the Western Hemisphere. Karen Paul's CBC News, Washington. Food giant Nestle is recalling infant formula sold in various countries. The company says an ingredient may be contaminated. The recall covers batches sold across Europe and in Turkey and Argentina. Austria's health ministry says it affects more than 800 products and is the largest
Starting point is 00:04:06 recall in the company's history. The recall does not affect formula sold in Canada. A 13-year-old boy in Nova Scotia has died after being attacked by three dogs. The boy was out biking in Welshtown on Saturday when three large dogs charged at him. The municipality is providing grief counselors for students at the boys' school and other residents.
