In Paris today, new promises from the leaders of more than 30 countries
to protect Ukraine in the aftermath of an eventual ceasefire.
French President Emmanuel Macron says the new commitments
mean Ukraine can achieve peace with Russia without surrendering.
France and the UK are promising to send troops.
after a peace deal is signed.
And for the first time, U.S. representatives also took part in talks with the Coalition of the Willing.
We are here to mediate and help in the peace process,
and we're prepared to do anything necessary to get to that place.
Special envoy Steve Whitkoff says the U.S. president is strongly behind security protocols for Ukraine.
On the sidelines of that meeting, the focus was on Greenland.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeated his threats to take over Greenland,
possibly by force.
The White House issued a statement saying it's in the national interest.
Murray Brewster reports.
This gathering in Paris was aimed at giving Ukraine concrete security commitments
ahead of possible peace talks with Russia.
But U.S. military action in Venezuela
and the notion of Greenland, a territory of Denmark, a NATO country,
might be next, have cast a long shadow over the conference.
Prime Minister Mark Carney.
We stand with Denver.
Denmark. We stand with Greenland. Our closest partnership is with the United States, and we'll
work with everybody to make sure that we move forward together. Several coalition of the willing
countries, including France, the UK, Germany, and Spain have released a joint statement, saying
Greenland's future belongs to the people of Greenland. The show of solidarity comes amid
stark warnings from Denmark to take Donald Trump's threats seriously and that military action
against Greenland would herald the end of NATO. Murray Brewster, CBC News.
Paris. Meanwhile, the U.S. has offered few timelines or plans on Venezuela's political future,
yet there are plenty of questions about who currently governs a nation now in limbo. Venezuela's
opposition leader, Maria Carina Machado, has been in hiding for months. But as Jorge Barrera tells
us, that could soon as soon as possible back home. Maria Cornina Machado, telling Fox News,
her return to Venezuela is imminent. But she didn't say when.
Louis Carrera, an official with Vente Venezuela, Machado's political party, says he thinks she could return in days.
It's what I believe, based on how I know her, says Carrera.
He is the party's coordinator in the Western Venezuelan state of Dachira, which sits next to Colombia.
She is a woman who has a deep love for the country, he says.
Carrera fled Venezuela after his home was raided in 2024.
He says he believes Machado will be the next president.
But the nation's political future remains murky. President Donald Trump has said the U.S. will run Venezuela for the short term, while acting President Delsi Rodriguez insists no foreign agent is governing the country.

Human rights groups in Iran say at least 25 people have been killed and more than a thousand arrested in protests.
The demonstrations started in Tehran as a response to.
soaring inflation and the plunging value of the Iranian currency. The Iranian regime says the
demonstrations are being provoked by foreign governments. Food giant Nestle is recalling infant
formula sold in various countries. The company says an ingredient may be contaminated. The
recall covers batches sold across Europe and in Turkey and Argentina. Austria's health ministry
says it affects more than 800 products and is the largest recall in the company's history. The
recall does not affect formula sold in Canada.
A 13-year-old boy in Nova Scotia has died after being attacked by three dogs.
The boy was out biking in Welshtown on Saturday when three large dogs charged at him.
The municipality is providing grief counselors for students at the boy's school and other residents.
The animals were all euthanized.
And that is The World This Hour.
