A multinational force for Ukraine is just one pledge. Coalition members also promised to monitor the ceasefire, support Ukraine's armed forces, and step in if Russia attacks again. Now, on the sidelines of that Paris meeting, leaders were discussing a different issue.
Starting point is 00:01:21 U.S. President Donald Trump has repeated his threats to take over Greenland, possibly by force. The White House issued a statement saying it's in the national influence. interest, as Tom Perry tells us, those threats are forcing the island's allies to respond. It's an important meeting this afternoon. Prime Minister Mark Carney in Paris to work with European leaders on a possible pathway to peace in Ukraine. But it's the prospect of another conflict that's garnered much of the attention. We need Greenland. U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated threats to seize Greenland from its NATO ally Denmark.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Carney met today with Danish Prime Minister Mettaferre. Fredrickson, who says an American takeover of Greenland would be the end of NATO. Kearney tried to strike a diplomatic tone. We stand with Denmark. We stand with Greenland. We're, you know, our closest partnership is with the United States, and we'll work with everybody to make sure that we move forward together. The leaders of six countries, including the UK, France and Germany, have issued a statement saying Greenland belongs to its people that Denmark and Greenland alone will decide their future.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Tom Perry, CBC News, Ottawa. And after ousting Venezuela's leader, Nicholas Maduro, President Donald Trump, is talking about seizing its vast oil reserves. The South American country produces a heavy crude similar to Western Canada. In Paris, Prime Minister Mark Carney was asked how U.S. access to Venezuelan oil could affect Canada's industry. He said he's not worried. It's been our view, and we're working towards this, that Canadian oil will be competitive because it is low risk. clearly low risk, low cost, the marginal costs, there's been huge progress in getting down the cost,
Starting point is 00:03:06 and low carbon, which is what the Pathways Project carbon capture will bring. And that makes Canadian oil competitive, Canadian oil competitive for the medium and long term. Carney says Canada has already made moves to diversify its exports beyond the U.S. A boy has died in Nova Scotia after being attacked by three dogs. The RCMP says it's investigating. There are a few details so far. Kayla Hounsel has more. Police say the boy was riding his bike past a property on Saturday when three dogs attacked him.
Starting point is 00:03:40 They described the dogs only as large breed, without saying specifically what breed. It happened in Welshtown, Nova Scotia, part of the municipality of the District of Shelburne in the southwestern part of the province. Today, the municipality says the tragic loss of a 13-year-old boy has had a profound impact. on the community. It extended condolences to his family, friends, and classmates, and has made grief and counseling resources available. The RCMP says no charges have been laid at this time, and its investigation is ongoing. The dogs have been euthanized by a veterinarian. Kala Hounsel, CBC News, Halifax. After teetering on the edge of a strike last month, Air Transat pilots have voted to ratify a five-year employment contract.
Starting point is 00:04:27 About 750 pilots were ready to walk off the job in early December over wages and job security. The airline started canceling flights as a precaution, disrupting some travelers. The pilot's union reached a deal with the airline's parent company just eight hours before the deadline.
