Starting point is 00:00:00 This ascent isn't for everyone. You need grit to climb this high this often. You've got to be an underdog that always over-delivers. You've got to be 6,500 hospital staff, 1,000 doctors, all doing so much with so little. You've got to be Scarborough. Defined by our uphill battle and always striving towards new heights. And you can help us keep climbing.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Donate at lovescarbro.cairbo. From CBC News, the world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. In Paris today, new promises from the leaders of more than 30 countries to protect Ukraine in the aftermath of an eventual ceasefire. France and Britain are promising to send troops after a peace deal is signed. For the first time, U.S. representatives also took part in talks with the so-called Coalition of the Willing. are here to mediate and help in the peace process and we're prepared to do anything necessary to get to that place. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff says President Donald Trump is strongly behind security protocols for Ukraine. The Trump administration says it needs to acquire Greenland for national security purposes. That's after European leaders express support for the Arctic Island as the self-governing territory belonging to Denmark. Rasmasyarlah is the Danish member of parliament, he says all indications suggest the Americans are not going to stop.
Starting point is 00:01:34 We will defend it. And in that case, we would be at war. We would be fighting each other, which is completely absurd. But you cannot disagree that if the United States attacks a NATO country, there is no alliance. Denmark and the U.S. are both members of NATO. On his truth social platform, Donald Trump now says Venezuela's interim authorities will be turning over between 30, and 50 million barrels of oil to the U.S., which will then be sold at market price. Meanwhile, the U.S. has offered few timelines or plans on Venezuela's political future. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been hiding for months, but as Jorge Barrera reports, that could soon change.
Starting point is 00:02:17 I'm planning to go as soon as possible back home. Maria Corina Machado telling Fox News, her return to Venezuela is imminent, but she didn't say when. I think so in days. Lewis Carrera, an official with Vente Venezuela, Machado's political party says he thinks she could return in days. It's what I believe, based on how I know her, says Carrera. He is the party's coordinator in the Western Venezuelan state of Dachira, which sits next to Colombia. She is a woman who has a deep love for the country, he says.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Carrera fled Venezuela after his home was raided in 2024. He says he believes Machado will be the next president. But the nation's political future remains murky. President Donald Trump has said the U.S. will run Venezuela for the short term, while acting President Delsi Rodriguez insists no foreign agent is governing the country. Jorge Brera, CBC News, Cucuta, Colombia. Americans who took part in the January 6 riots five years ago marched in Washington again in 2021, thousands of Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in protest of Joe Biden's election win. people died, and nearly 200 police officers were injured. Karen Paul's reports. A rally and march to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Capitol Hill riot.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump continued efforts to rewrite the history of this assault, condemning those who investigated him for it, and downplaying his involvement. You know that the news never reported the words, walk or march, peacefully and patriotically to the Capitol. Meanwhile, inside. the Capitol, Pamela Hemphill, also known as Maga Granny, spoke at a House Democratic event. The 72-year-old served two months in federal prison for taking part in the riots. Hemphill was one of more than 1,500 people Trump pardoned last year, but she didn't accept it.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Why? Because it was a lie. January 6 was an insurrection. I wrote the law. Hemphill credited the Capitol Police for protecting her when she was trampled, and she asked for their forgiveness. Karen Poles, CBC News, Washington. Aldrich Ames has died at the age of 84. The former CIA officer was convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and Russia
Starting point is 00:04:37 during and after the Cold War. I knew quite well when I gave the names of our agents in the Soviet Union that I was exposing them. Ames died behind bars on Monday. And that is your world this hour. I'm Neil Hurland. Thank you.
