The Worst Idea Of All Time - 11: A Compliment From The Rock w/ Amy Hoggart

Episode Date: March 8, 2023

The fellaz are joined by US-based British writer/actor/comedian Amy Hoggart and one thing is for sure; She has watched the movie! You might know Amy from Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Almost Royal o...r her podcast, FeMANism. We know her from watching The F8 of The Furious in three bite-sized CHUNKS and being left wanting less of what F8 has (car chases and fight scenes) and more of what it doesn’t (a plot that makes sense and characters with some depth). Amy also drops knowledge on what Aristotle what’ve brought to this film’s script AND what it would mean to her to receive a little pep talk from The Rock.See Guy live in many different cities in Australia and New Zealand: https://linktr.ee/guy_montSee Tim live in a few different cities in Australia and New Zealand: https://linktr.ee/timbatt Hosted on Acast. Starting point is 00:00:41 And Guy Montgomery. And Rufus is here. If you're on our sub stack you'll see Rufus in the video because he's on my lap. And we are joined by a very special guest, a friend of the podcast with a laundry list of credits. You know her from Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, although she is not Samantha. You know her from It's Personal with Amy Hoggart because it is Amy Hoggart. And you also know from her podcast Feminism,
Starting point is 00:01:08 which is feminist from the perspective of a man. Finally. Thank God. Please welcome Amy Hoggart. Thank you. Kia ora, Amy. How are you? That was very well researched.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Oh, yeah. I'm well, thanks. Yeah. It's so good to see you, Amyy it's always great to have guests on to have our lovely funny friends on and it's always under such dire circumstances because this is the second time that we've watched the fast and the furious number eight and how many times have you seen this film just once in chunks, manageable chunks. That's how I would recommend to your future guests.
Starting point is 00:01:52 There's something about the word chunks that feels biological to me. I do not like it. You don't like chunks? Like blowing chunks. Yeah, there's something about it I don't like. I apologize. You broke this down. Have you spent much time in the Fast and the Furious cinematic universe before
Starting point is 00:02:07 first time first chunks and even then you still had to break it down into digestible chunks had to break it down yeah I did some research over the weekend by asking my friends and a surprising number of them were fans
Starting point is 00:02:24 really what was the research I just said by asking my friends, and a surprising number of them were fans. Really? What was the research? Did you say, have you seen? I just said, oh, I have to watch this terrible film to two different groups of people, and in each group there was diehard fans who were like, it's our bond, so back off. I don't know that it's fair to, I mean, the reviews can say something,
Starting point is 00:02:43 but for you, someone who's not familiar with the franchise,'t seen the movie to say i have to watch this terrible film you don't know come on you don't know there's a reputation oh i knew like why have i never seen any of the franchise because every time they're on i read the blurb or the synopsis or whatever and think i'm really glad that i don't have to see that. I hope one day I never have to. Do you piss around with action movies in general? No, that's the thing. That's not my vibe. What do you like?
Starting point is 00:03:15 What do you like to be in a movie? What are the best ingredients? Oh, no. Well, like a good script um plot that makes sense characters yeah and just not not an action film but you know listen i did it you did do it and that is that is the point of this podcast where we review um it's it's about doing. It's the doing of it that counts. Yeah, I would like to say, so for reference, Amy,
Starting point is 00:03:51 obviously the second time that Tim and I have watched Fast 8, and after nine screenings of Fast 9, what you will find is it's actually a pretty good movie. It's coherent. Fast 8 or 9? Fast 8. Fast 8. Well, Fast 8 in the context of seeing Fast 9 nine times,
Starting point is 00:04:08 then you see F8 once and you go, hey, hey, we're dealing with an Oscar bait potentially. Yeah. This is really hot stuff. You watch F8 a second time and you think, this isn't exactly how I remember it, but it's still edible. But I suppose it's good to have someone on the ground who hasn't seen any Fast and the Furious movies
Starting point is 00:04:28 and is watching one devoid of context. And that does lend your opinion a little more weight. So just to break it down into portion size. Yeah, chunks. Thanks, Tim. Tell us about the first helping you had of Fast 8. Well, the first helping was last night and i watched it uh i got through about an hour it's two hours 15 i think i did an hour and a half oh wow and i just got i just did it until i was bored and also i made my boyfriend watch it with me and I started to feel really guilty.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And I found it like just awful. But then today I woke up and I was like, I'm going to do it. And I did it. I did the last 45 minutes in bites of two. Oh my God. I realize you might not have meant, can you tell me the exact timings of it?
Starting point is 00:05:24 No, no, that's precisely what I wanted to know. Okay, yeah, they're my timings. You had company. What's your boyfriend seen in First and the Furious? Anything? I don't think he has, but he likes action more than me. So I think, and he thought it'd be funny and fun. He loves the, he's like, that's a really great idea for a podcast.
Starting point is 00:05:42 Like he'll want to listen. He was really up for it. And then within an hour and a half, he was like really's a really great idea for podcast like he'll want to listen he was really up for it and then within an hour and a half he was like really low no and what what were um what was dominic toredo and everyone doing when you turned the movie off last night oh it was the russian bit like that extended scene in the snow that's like and it's so long um yeah and i don't know why i didn't know why they were in russia still like i still was like i feel like they just had a budget and they were like we've got to spend this money yeah you're right plan how to spend it and then put down the script that's right like when you um work in a government department or um a particular bit of a company and your your little
Starting point is 00:06:26 bit of the business gets a budget you got to spend every cent or else they'll cut it next time next like quarter this is the same thing because we know there's going to be more fast movies so they're like we have to spend every cent and that's why we get this bloated 2 hour 15 movie when we're in Russia for too long. I would say the reward for fans of the franchise is we get to spend 45 minutes of perfectly directed, very logical and thought through action sequences involving nuclear weapons and a ex-Soviet submarine and a neon orange Lamborghini ice skating. I could do that in in 18 minutes
Starting point is 00:07:06 you could do the whole thing in 18 i reckon i could cut what we've got now to 18 minutes and it would work and be good and pretty crispy i think it'd be nice i think i think you made such a great point and because like if you if watching an action film is hard for me because like extended fights are boring they don't really further the plot because a fight you normally need to have the starting point in the end point so you just kind of need to get to the end and then they've got these car chases combined with fights which is so long and i'd say that's like 30 40 of the whole film but if you trimmed that and you just stuck to plot, sure, no one would see it
Starting point is 00:07:46 because you'd only see it if you liked those things. But I would have had a better night and maybe we'd have gone through the whole thing. It's such long scenes where you go, I don't need to know what happened. Watch this. I'm really interested to know,
Starting point is 00:08:00 do you think it would be a good film if they cut all the car and fight? Oh no! Please don't disarm me. It's no... Because I don't think we're dealing with like 38 minutes of monologues.
Starting point is 00:08:18 Like weird monologues and quippy lines from people sitting at computers. Did you laugh? And threats to a baby's life. Loads of threats to a baby's life loads threats to a baby's life which is yeah and then they just kill its mom and just the baby's that is that remains quite a shocking moment did that um did you were you taking it back did that did that did the movie magic speak to you did you think they're not going to and they go yeah but so i had two reactions that first i was really
Starting point is 00:08:46 i was really emotional um about it like i got really upset about it because a baby was either gonna be shot or and then it had to watch its mom die but then i started thinking you've really not set this up very well because you need us well firstly it is really jarring and awful to watch that happen next to a baby but we don't have any relate like vin diesel's character dom has no relationship to them yet he's only just found out he's a dad that was shoehorned in to raise the stakes two minutes before or whatever and there's no like they just keep saying this is very important they keep going like we just raised the stakes this is so important it's his son can you can you understand that but um we do have seven prior movies which neither
Starting point is 00:09:34 guy nor i know what's in them so this might not be the first time we've met i want to say alana i think we've met her i think they've her, but he didn't know he had a son. That's right. That is correct. Yeah. Okay. But you're right. If we could have the son in one movie prior before the son gets kidnapped
Starting point is 00:09:54 or a mention or something. Maybe a birth scene. Give me a birth scene. If you get your hands on the Blu-ray, there is an incredibly graphic deleted birth scene. And Vin Diesel isn't anywhere to be found because he doesn't know it's happening. That's right.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Atlanta has to deliver her own baby. It is harrowing. Wow. I mean, the thing for me is I still laughed at several moments during this movie. How did you find the company of The Rock, for example? Is a baby's life getting threatened funny to you guy is a um a police woman getting shot in the head in front
Starting point is 00:10:30 of your infant is there a barrel of laughs yeah you're sick you were sitting next to me tim it's a laugh a freaking minute i couldn't get enough i'm with amy i think if they axed all of the car chases and action sequences and just left in the plot and that bit and they made it even longer, it would fix the movie. Amy did not co-sign that. That was Amy's idea. There was a note. I'm standing on the shoulder of the giant.
Starting point is 00:10:53 That is Amy Hoggart. How did you like The Rock's performance? Did he get you? Yeah, I didn't mind him. I didn't have anything. They're all the same male character, aren't they? Him and Vin Diesel are like the powerful strongmen. Well, except for Statham, in my opinion.
Starting point is 00:11:14 He's got one character every film, right? Are we allowed to say that? I think so. He's very good at that character, though. Okay, great. This is your compatriot. Did you feel any patriotism seeing Stace rip it up on screen? There's quite a few Brits in there.
Starting point is 00:11:34 It's like Helen Mirren, right, who has – I have seen – imagine if I was like, this is actually her best performance. I never – I was on the fence about miriam before and then i saw her doing a cockney accent it was like yeah um and then there's that woman ramsey which which annoyed me because it's like this is so small but i wonder if you have this as kiwis but like no british woman be called ramsey unless they were made up by an american man in a is it a reference to oh wait is that neighbors is ramsey street and oh Street in... Oh, I guess Coronation Street is the street in Coronation Street.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Ramsey Street is from Neighbours. But it's a street. Yeah, it's like naming your child Broadway. Yeah, yeah, it doesn't quite work. Now everyone knows I live in New York. Oh dear. There's a Broadway in New Market Auckland. You could be anywhere. Really? Yeah, yeah. I think Broadway's a pretty
Starting point is 00:12:23 popular name for a street. Not unlike Ramsey as a baby name. How long did that bother you for? The whole movie or just when you were introduced to the character? I hate Brits in films. It's not like I don't think we're like stereotypes and victims of racism or anything. But it's never good. In American films, it's never right. Yeah, yeah. but you guys must have that i mean there are fewer i always think when i i feel
Starting point is 00:12:51 immense pride when i see a new zealander in a film and if they're doing a new zealand accent i always think what you're allowed to do that i just think fuck that's crazy i never think about how like the accuracy with which we're represented. I've just felt immense pride. Right. I mean, I remember watching The Hateful Eight, the Quentin Tarantino movie. It's set in a barn in the Old West.
Starting point is 00:13:14 It's in olden times. And I found it so immersive. It was sort of like a play. And then Zoe Bell, a New Zealand stuntwoman, arrives in the last sort of quarter of the movie. And just in the thickest New Zealand accent you've ever heard. It's like, I've got the horses outside. Just ruined everything for me.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Like the house of cards came tumbling down. I thought, this isn't real. This is not representative of anything. Why did they do that? Because I think her and Tarantino are old friends. I think they might have been an item for a little bit. They might have even been lovers. Maybe. Who's to say? to say saucy not us because we are not hollywood gossips because i fear quentin tarantino's presumed legal team that's why you haven't gone out with him yet correct
Starting point is 00:13:57 yeah we i took one look at the nda and said not for me no thank you i'm blabbing brother i'm live streaming the whole thing I'm going to describe what it's like to suck each individual one of your toes to move forward um we don't I mean normally I'd save this for later on Amy but it seems like there was you've already mentioned so many things that you don't like about the movie the length the amount of time we're in Russia I actually I, I also think there's something about- I don't have a problem with that in theory, by the way. What, being in Russia? Yeah, like I don't, it's not like that was,
Starting point is 00:14:29 the Russian segments must be short in every film for me. No, that wasn't my intended inference there. Yeah, you might not be surprised to hear, at the end of Fast 9, we spend a lot of time in Georgia, in Tivoli. And again, the critique is not of georgia or the people of georgia it is instead of the the length of action sequence that takes place there it's also a sort of 45 minute just unrelenting series of problems that are being solved with very you know to be fair quite creative um you should you should have a crispy third act i think don't you think
Starting point is 00:15:03 you build up all your things in your first and second act. Then you've got your third act. You want to just bloody let's get it done. Nothing that we suggest right now will be obviously actionable because all of the movies before Fast 8 have already been made. They're in the can, I understand. But to ask both of you, what do you want? I was working my way to a shining shining light wow
Starting point is 00:15:26 wow which was bitterly um but but amy i just want to ask if there was any part of the film that you did enjoy a performance a line a scene a car a um could be a fashion item i that was my shining light while you think i'll just say mine quickly. Opening race, Vin Diesel against the Cuban debt collector. And we see, I mean, first of all, there was a shot where he drives past in the car and he's got a really thin seat. The driver's seat's really thin and I like that. And then later on when they're racing,
Starting point is 00:15:56 there's a shot of his feet on the pedals and he's wearing like cuffed sort of, some sort of light red chinos and a pair of sort of moccasins or loafers. And I thought, this feels, I mean, I've never been to Cuba. I don't know a lot about the fashion, but I thought this feels authentic. And that was my shining light. I like that little moment.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Nice. How many more times do you get to see that moment? Five. Five professionally and in my own time as many as i so choose six um we've seen it twice oh it's eight yeah yeah i can't do maths yeah six times a cool half dozen and amy did you have a moment that you enjoyed i can think of two but they they do actually suggest that i might have lame taste in film which if that's what the listeners want to think we might as well just establish that now you know but i liked the bit
Starting point is 00:16:51 where um um dom and then his girlfriend is like his wife letty yeah they're just like hanging out as a couple and and i was like oh they have a relationship and they have to figure out whether they have kids that's slightly interesting yeah and then but i know it's gonna be an action film with cars everywhere it's not gonna last so then that didn't last and then i quite liked when they set up quite randomly that they were having like a rooftop like you know relaxation night after in new york then i was like okay i think it's all over they're having a nice party i will enjoy this bit so preferably you would have had like an almost like a richard link leader directed we just stay in cuba and we stay with this lovely couple as they negotiate whether
Starting point is 00:17:40 they should have kids or not what's's the future of their relationship? Yeah. Okay, let's remove the fact that Dom gets waylaid by Charlize Theron as Cipher and has to solve this whole... Can I ask a question? Yeah, always. Sorry, because I know that there's like a strict plan, but do we ever find out why she convinced him? Because it wasn't the son. He finds that out later.
Starting point is 00:18:07 There's a phone, right? My interpretation and our interpretation is on the phone is a picture of his ex-partner the mother of his son who has been introduced in previous movies and i i think vin diesel believed to be dead and so it's a photo saying you're going to want to come because of this and it's basically like the stakes are to keep that woman alive. He has to do what Charlize Theron asked. I slightly disagree. I don't think that he thought she was dead necessarily. Because I think the nature of their relationship is there was a period of time when he thought Letty was dead.
Starting point is 00:18:38 Which is when he hooked up with Alana. And then she got revealed to be alive. So he's like okay I have to go back to my true love Leti much like Odysseus returning to his homeland to his wife after he's like impregnated witches and all these things
Starting point is 00:18:58 but he comes back to Leti but then secretly he's got a kid but it's because I don't think because he did the child is revealed on the plane so I don't think He comes back to Leti, but then secretly he's got a kid. Because the child is revealed on the plane, so I don't think he knows that it's not a child that's on the phone. Yeah, I think that's right.
Starting point is 00:19:17 I did like the baby bit. Sorry, he's just a cute baby, but not the murder bit. Do you like any time the baby was on camera, you liked? Yeah. Here's a list of what you liked from the baby was on camera you liked yeah so you like here's what here's a list of what you like from the fast and furious movie you liked a couple talking about whether or not to have a baby this sounds antagonistic i feel like a trash woman and you're a strong man about to denounce how brutal is that no no i think it's brilliant i think we've you know we're all learning a lesson about lesson about what these movies could have more of. We liked the baby on screen and we liked when we knew it was over
Starting point is 00:19:51 and they had a dinner party. This movie must have been such hard work for you. It was really hard work. And, yes, I am in my 30s and I'm a woman. I don't know what to tell you. Full confession, I'm in my 30s and I'm a woman. I don't know what to tell you. Full confession, I'm in my 30s and I'm a man as well. But what I wanted to circle back to, Amy, was asking you, so you like in Cuba when they're talking about, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:15 whether or not they're going to have a baby. Imagine that Charlize Theron doesn't interrupt Dom on his honeymoon and we just get to watch this couple honeymooning. How would you like to see that relationship and that conversation play out? Well, I don't know. You never, in this film anyway, because I'm not a franchise lover,
Starting point is 00:20:33 that you don't get a sense of their dynamic. At the moment, it's like they're both, well, she's absolutely stunning. He's clearly very attractive to some types of women. And there's a masculinity there like right sure you know what i mean like so she's attractive to everyone and he is but there's a hyper masculine vibe there like he just raced he just tore up a car and raced it into the water and then like gave another car away and so i'm interested sort of in that dynamic what else
Starting point is 00:21:11 is there in their relationship i don't i don't know i haven't seen it but i would watch that play out and also really made me laugh when um cypher like demonstrates her power by getting him to walk up a different street even though she could have just approached him on the original street and he's carrying a bag with a baguette and a single rose in it and i just thought okay this is a really funny relationship like how do you feel if you're if your partner went out one morning to get coffees and came back with a single baguette and a single rose single rose i'd be so confused so confused you need to go out turn around and go back out again right now but did you walk up your normal street
Starting point is 00:21:51 hey if they came back with one flour and a loaf of bread I'd be like it's a romantic gesture but like where's the cheese where's the couturement sounds like a dry snack first of all we don't know what's in their fridge maybe they're butter rich the cheese, the couturement. Yeah. Are we going to put anything on this? Sounds like a dry snack. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Okay, first of all, we don't know what's in their fridge. Maybe they're butter rich. We don't know what's in the bottom of the brown paper bag. We can only see objects that are tall enough to poke out of the top of the bag. Bring back coffees. There's no coffees in there. The coffee shop's closed. Cypher's running her game. The coffee shop's closed, but the bakery's open?
Starting point is 00:22:23 No. And the rose shop? The rose shop? The flower shop is open? You're not's open no and the rose shop the rose that the flower shop is open you're not getting a coffee from the rose shop in my experience best not to get a coffee from a bakery either they're specialist i'm saying if those places are open the cafe is also open he's improvising everything he knows he's in cuba that's coffee they love coffee they love coffee guy they're coffee Yeah they do love coffee There are other shops I agree
Starting point is 00:22:48 But what we are seeing is a man under pressure His normal routine has been thrown for a loop By Charlize Theron It is so funny that this is Dominic Toretto Who can like drive his way Out of certain death at the hands of the smartest Villainous Most villainous people on earth
Starting point is 00:23:04 But the thing that's thrown him is like, oh man my jaunt down to get a single red rose and a loaf of bread's been slightly thrown out by a couple of road cones If he leaves the house without a shopping list he's in big trouble He's all out of sorts
Starting point is 00:23:18 Like 12 different sized screws Just a bag of batteries and nothing else I thought maybe we could use these Like 12 different sized screws. Just a bag of batteries. Nothing else. I thought maybe we could use these. Oh, yeah. His voice is crazy. Is that steroids? I think it's his normal voice.
Starting point is 00:23:36 I wouldn't like to put it on the steroids. But I can tell you he's got two pop songs on Spotify that you can listen to. I will. What genre do you think they are? I just said. Pop songs. Oh, yeah. But the pops are...
Starting point is 00:23:51 Right. That's true. It took me so long to use it. Pop? Yeah, Tim really gave the game away there. And I didn't pick it. I was slow as well. I don't know if...
Starting point is 00:24:02 It feels like a question and answer's fault, but... Well, I just think... I'm also aware I don't give my shining light. a question answers fault but well i just i just think um i'm also aware i didn't give my shining light can i do that quickly because i always get amy i get so scared i'm gonna forget them what do you mean your shining light my shining light my favorite my favorite little bit of the movie great i want to hear it was the bit right at the start where there's a wrecking ball that's killing all of these police officers, which I am not that enthused about, but the fact that someone's painted a smiley face on it is, um,
Starting point is 00:24:30 I thought that was kind of cute. Do you remember that? I don't remember that at all. It's in Germany when they go to Berlin and they all burst out of the building. Oh, right. Yes, yes,
Starting point is 00:24:41 yes. How could you forget that? Okay. Yeah. I didn't understand that bit at all. It is very hard to understand. I didn't understand the purpose of it. And so it's very easy to forget, I think.
Starting point is 00:24:50 It was just to efficiently introduce all of the old characters. This is the thing about these kind of action movies is that they're very convoluted. So it's very, despite the fact that they are, I think, quite broadly viewed as being stupid, if you're not paying attention to like every single line of dialogue they're very hard to stay with and like figure out why are we here what what are we doing you really want to listen to everything can i make a confession
Starting point is 00:25:18 that is really supporting the point i had to wikipedia the plot i didn't know what was good i had no idea what was going on. Because another thing that I find tricky about these types of films is like, any plot hole, anything is just, they'll just, because you guys, you know, we all write. Sometimes if you're writing something, you need to get people from A to B
Starting point is 00:25:39 or solve the problem of who knows what or how. So what they'll do in an action film is they'll go, I've got my SW2R transmitter that can tell you where anyone is in the world at any point and we're going to and and they have a big screen and everyone's and they're like we can detonate this and bomb that and and just suddenly we're in russia but it's like well if you can do everything why don't why don't you just go all the way to the end and yeah solve the film like why why why they've got like solves some bits and then they're like oh the the car 618 rehabitor is stalled and it's like but you can do anything because in the next breath someone else is going to go well i just fixed it with my
Starting point is 00:26:16 6q and it was just i don't seeing you make up model names of these products on the flight is truly seeing inside the mind of a masterful improviser like i'm just no somebody doesn't know what they're talking about it's just numbers we're grabbing letters and numbers but you're doing it with such speed and confidence i'm like yeah the sq 32 are you writing something at the moment amy i'm oh god i'm always writing stuff i mean now i realize i gotta get into action no yeah you've got you've just it sounds like if you transplant some of the solves from this movie into your own projects you could get to the end of a lot of scripts very quickly excuse me i'll be back
Starting point is 00:26:57 in a minute get my typewriter out they do it with like they do it with other genres like sci-fi as well with science yeah they go like there's a bug that's coming it's like i think that's what pisses me off about bad sci-fi movies like i love the ones that are quite grounded in the universe that we live in with all the rules that we have and they have to find like nifty ways of figuring stuff out because you're right when there's the sort of there's this very arbitrary attitude towards what can be solved and what can't, and it just removes any stakes that you've got in the movie. Like in this, it's just like, oh no, Cypher is untraceable. This is the greatest hacker on earth.
Starting point is 00:27:37 She is completely untraceable. We have no idea how to find her. And then who gets on a computer? Is it Ludacris? No. Rams? No. idea how to find her and then uh who gets on a computer is it ludicrous no so rams no oh statham gets on a computer and just starts going found her she's in new york and it's like that all unfolds within about 12 seconds of us finding out that she is unable to be found by anyone on earth and statham's not even the computer guy But they're all everything They are
Starting point is 00:28:05 They're like triple threats Tech, driving, muscling Like killing people Pick one, two tops But really you should pick one What I'm hearing from both of you is we need less action And more time actually spent in the weeds Of computer code
Starting point is 00:28:22 What is the story If not solving problems in an interesting way yeah right it's it's barrier how do we get over the barrier but in this it's just like barrier did it barrier did it it was buried did it yeah it's annoying the but that's because they're setting up with the 45 minutes of russia where they're solving the problems that audience guys want to see themselves. Can I just say, I love our dynamic guy because it doesn't matter what I say. You always will feel an obligation to represent the negating argument,
Starting point is 00:28:57 even when it is like patently the stupidest thing to try and fight in favour of. Like Tim is always right right that's your dynamic i love seeing guy just just it's like it doesn't matter a lot of the time when we're watching the movie and talking to each other we are agreeing yeah oh really this is like a stage act yes this is our home no but i do i do feel an honest responsibility to defend the you know i do believe in movies existing on their terms good on you um and i i don't think this is good like i i genuinely loved watching this movie the first
Starting point is 00:29:38 time last time we watched it and this time it was a lot harder it didn't fill me with energy the way that it did the previous time but also for me comparatively to fast night i it didn't fill me with energy the way that it did the previous time but also for me comparatively to fast night i still didn't enjoy and i still do find um parts of it and this isn't to say that anybody who doesn't enjoy it is wrong but i do find parts of it enjoyable like i i when the that whole scene with the rock and this the football team and the the misdirect where everyone thinks he's talking to sas agents whatever he's talking to the football team and the misdirect where everyone thinks he's talking to SAS agents or whatever he's talking to the football team and then that government agent shows up.
Starting point is 00:30:08 That still makes me laugh. That back and forth with the government agent on the sidelines. I'm smiling, I'm laughing. I thought the reveal that it was little girls, like we guessed that it would be young kids. Like we called it, they haven't done a reverse so we know that it's going to be a joke. That actually kind of annoying of us but yeah i thought it was more dynamic that they're not just in a gray room somewhere going there's been a you know task set yeah
Starting point is 00:30:33 but it was fun that was also a scene that was like more fun and it's nice that he has a daughter but like this i think what stresses me out about these types of films is this is sounding like i've i've just told you guys i'm writing stuff and i've like read one book on writing but i really believe this like i think that's sorry for being pretentious but i i do think this is interesting like aristotle said i'm massively paraphrasing but i think about this every time i read a book or watch a film or whatever like the best endings are ones that make so much sense that you think you should have seen it coming but you never did like the the consumer the reader the watcher like never saw that ending but as soon as it happens they're like oh yeah obviously and if and i think the best pieces of
Starting point is 00:31:23 art do do that you're like oh obviously that was the murderer or like yeah they weren't going to be together because of whatever but this is just like how could you know what's going to happen in the next half beat because someone's going to come in and waving a machine and go like well i've just discovered that the six nine two whatever it is all of your models start with the number six i really want to write an action film now the point you're making is a very good one i think especially when you view the um and to quote aristotle and and quote is quote is generous to paraphrase the book i read to use the name of aristotle in response to the fate of the furious as a a hefty lift but i don't oh my god if you yeah that makes me hate myself like if someone's like oh you should see this
Starting point is 00:32:18 podcast someone talks about aristotle relation to fate and furious i'd be like i would walk out i'm not a fan of the self-talk, Amy. We're celebrating. We love you. Everyone listening loves you. The reason that we have you here is because who can swing from the Aristotle vine to the 69QT transposer with such effortless grace?
Starting point is 00:32:42 No one but Amy Hoggart. Who's your favorite character if you have one what this not the baby you can pick the baby for sure and i think that would be very telling about just doubling down how much you didn't enjoy this film um oh do you know what maybe the rock actually oh do you want me to tell you a really embarrassing thought that i had during it so there's this bit where like um letty or whatever is being attacked by these russian guards or whatever and they're like huge men and she's one woman on her own and she effortlessly chucks them everywhere and they're all dead or and then the rock gives her validation and
Starting point is 00:33:27 i thought i'd love it i would love it because he's just like he acknowledges that she did a good job and and she did you know he seems like a nice man what are some what are some moments in your life where you'd love the rock to either be there or walk past and go hey nice work amy when i come in going on about like the dr the 60r 942 and he goes that's a great that's a good piece of tech no just be nice like this huge jacked guy imagine if you were like running in the park or something i don't know what i never did but and the rock was like hey
Starting point is 00:34:10 great pace you would be like holy shit or you're carrying your shopping and he was like hey you look really strong i hope that all of all of our very buffest listeners take heed because you've you've you've got a gift you may have like built the gift you may be working on your body constantly but you've got a a gift to give to the world which is giving validation to amy every time you see her particularly if anyone sees amy maintaining an incredible running pace while carrying groceries down broadway in new york city to be to be less mean is that i i too i would i would love that if i went for a run and uh in some big huge muscle bound guy who clearly spends a lot of time at the gyms like hey tim or just hey guy we're not
Starting point is 00:34:57 you know hey man great job i'd be like shit yeah yeah you'd feel good absolutely validation does work yeah i love a compliment they're so fantastic but are we rubes for um being so thirsty for them is that do it what's a rube like a um fool a fool a sucker are we are we the suckers kiwi word or like a cool word that i should know uh first of all kiwi words can be cool words. That's the dichotomy. Is that from New Zealand or is that cool? Rube is cool. Rube is international.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Okay, I'm going to start using that straight away. It sounds Rube. I'm gutted that you didn't say Statham because Statham's my favourite character. Oh, wait, why is that? that you didn't say Statham because Statham's my favourite character by such a countryman. He's just, I really think he does everything really well.
Starting point is 00:35:50 I think he's super genuinely funny. I think he is a good actor in this movie and I think he does all the action bits great. Yeah. There's a lot of parkour stuff when he's escaping the maximum security prison. And, you know, I'm sure he's not doing all the stunts, but you see his face not doing all the stunts but you see his face in a lot of them you do see his face in a lot of them
Starting point is 00:36:08 i'm also wondering you know because the the plot didn't seem to strike a chord for you but when when uh vin diesel shot jason statham did you think he was genuinely dead i did until we didn't see the body and then they were the way they discussed the death after like he has died um i thought oh maybe he hasn't but then i was wrong because when they shot the baby watching its mom die we didn't see the mom die we didn't see her at all after so i was like maybe she's not dead and i think she was yeah so there was a movie deciding here's the line we're not going to show you us murdering a baby's mom in front of the baby and i think also they shot it which i wanted to see apparently yeah wanting i think you just wanted it to last a little longer
Starting point is 00:36:58 but the baby was facing out the window that's right the baby heard it it certainly would have been a very harrowing memory oh so didn't see but the baby was facing uh it's dad vin okay vin diesel daddy what do you think vin goes but i reckon papa papa looks like a papa papa diesel that's a stage name right we we did we found his his real name well we just went on wikipedia and it's it's like it's like martin thomas or something like that love that i love him yeah man i just i get such an interesting vibe off him as a human being do you know do you know jason stam? Is that how the UK works? Weirdly, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:47 I know him and Helen Mirren. Ramsay? Ramsay. I don't know her name. There's a Welsh character in it, isn't there? Who is Welsh? Oh, the brother of... Brother of Welsh.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Brother of Statham. He looks Welsh. I've never met any of these guys, but I bet they're really, really, really nice. He's married to a famous model, if you can imagine that dynamic. Who is? Jason Statham? Statham, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:12 He's married to one of our most famous models. And is that another of your close personal friends? Yeah, she's great. Did you speak at the wedding? No, let me think. I don't think I did, actually. Probably for the best. I don't think I did that. Yeah. Did you speak at the wedding? No, let me think. I don't think I did actually. Probably for the best.
Starting point is 00:38:29 I don't think I did that. Yeah. Because you just don't know once you're up there. I'm not fond of his work. Sometimes you start off with the best of intentions at a wedding, talking about how great the couple are, and then all of a sudden it turns into a speak now, forever hold your peace kind of a vibe. As you drift into all the wonderful things
Starting point is 00:38:45 about one of the um betrothed oh are you talking are you talking about your your own wedding it feels raw it does doesn't it uh no that didn't from memory that didn't happen at my wedding i can't i don't remember guy drifting into that territory at all when he was speaking i was i remember i was very effusive about you and i was probably i probably could have you know bigged up zoe a little more i keep going on tim's so handsome tim you look so you did do it but for the unexpected um part of the the relationship which i i enjoyed a lot it was my version of the rock the rock giving me a slap on the tush after a run around the park. You know, I loved it.
Starting point is 00:39:27 You tell him that you look buff. Yeah. In my little suit with my little tie and my little wedding haircut. Your shiny shoes. Exploding out of those shoes, your big fucking muscle-bound feet. Very odd. Very strange. I've got a question.
Starting point is 00:39:43 Sorry. You go. Hit me. About appearances. About appearances. About appearances. Why is Charlize Theron wearing white dreads? What's going on? Correct.
Starting point is 00:39:55 Wow. And I don't know why we didn't start with that either. That is absolutely extraordinary. Yeah. I'm so glad you said that because, like, I feel like Guy hasn't really made much of that when we're watching the movie, when we're talking about it, but every time it's been very shocking to me
Starting point is 00:40:12 it's shocking to me when it first happens on screen both watches, and then it constantly will be doing something and then we'll come back and we've got a scene with her and I'm like, oh yeah and this movie didn't come out 15 years ago, it came out what't come out 15 years ago. It came out,
Starting point is 00:40:27 what, four, five years ago? 2017. Five years ago. Six. Six years ago. We're at the start of 23.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Even like white, white person dreads, like say, I don't remember a time where we loved it culturally. Like I'm pretty sure it was always a bit like weird, even if we had it, we didn't talk about you know cultural appropriation in the same way as we do now but even if it was in a time like 15 years
Starting point is 00:40:51 ago whatever and we didn't talk about cultural appropriation in the same way why is she why has she got dreadlocks there's nothing about her character in any way that suggests someone who would do that you know she's she's a hacker like on a in a plane it's just so it's so incongruent doesn't because she's not it's not a well-drawn character in general i'm i'm tired of people of people saying that hackers can't help white hackers can't have dreadlocks here he comes here he comes on this shiny let's go let's go I think Cypher a woman
Starting point is 00:41:27 who has the power to do like literally magic powers and can do anything in the world is within her rights to have whatever
Starting point is 00:41:34 hair she wants it's no one else's business is this the is this the thing of it it's almost like she's a hacker she's kind of a contrarian she is
Starting point is 00:41:41 she's not bound by any rules she's anti-establishment I mean for what it's worth in the ninth movie she reappears and has a very severe bowl yeah i want to describe it as a bowl cut too but i'm sure there's a better way of describing like a more accurate she's clearly been in this cinema in this universe before because dom knows her and so we could sit here and speculate about what other insane sort of i would love to do that hairstyle she has in previous movies full afro f5 for her
Starting point is 00:42:13 introduction but um dreads that's associated with a culture right bowl haircuts isn't a cultural thing it's not this isn't derived from a particular country in a particular time it doesn't say anything about beliefs or that's true you know it is still like if you see it you're like man that's that is it's very something you know like it's it's incredibly severe i get the feel like in in uh in white people's version of culture dreadlocks represent someone maybe who is backpacking and she is in Cuba she's wearing cut offs
Starting point is 00:42:50 she's in a singlet that's an act isn't it I think music festival a certain type of music festival I think hemp clothing I think fire poya absolutely anti-vax yeah
Starting point is 00:43:07 white person with dreads is not vaccinated and i don't think cypher is vaccinated that's it yeah they don't need it like the rest of us she's like she's been on the internet a lot and done her own research cypher has and she's come to the conclusion that she's published a lot of papers too yeah and i'm sure some very reputable uh publications she's got a lot of stuff out there it seems to me she runs the internet anonymous or we're told about the hacking group and they're afraid of her i haven't brought this up before but it is so funny that anonymous are presented as this uh this this hacker group to be feared in this movie. Because that was like a moment that we had, I think, for about maybe six months
Starting point is 00:43:48 where they were kind of doing some stuff. When this movie was in pre-production and production. Yeah. And it is... These movies are wonderful time capsules in that way, aren't they? You get these little nuggets. You're always noticing the technology. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:01 You see a cell phone, you're like, oh yeah, that came out in february 2017 samsung but then the rest of the technology is like more advanced than humans might ever get to absolutely it's fun like picking up it's just magic that pisses me off back to your kind of yeah it's just like it's magic that they're putting in the frame of technology and i'm like you can't just fucking play by the rules, guys. Was it exciting for you, Amy, to see New York represented on the silver screen?
Starting point is 00:44:31 It's my first time watching New York in a film. What did it feel like? That must have felt incredible. It looks great on camera. Is it how it feels? Did they capture the essence of the city you've lived here we live you know you lived in brooklyn where i live i always feel like manhattan's a different um like it's a different city i'm always excited to go in honestly
Starting point is 00:44:56 yeah like yeah does that feel like going to town yeah it's the same like growing up in the suburbs in london it's like going into town is a thing you know um i still feel like that even though i'm really close i can see it from my window sorry guys but i can see it from my window um flashing away at me um yeah it's well it's well shot but it's not like a film that there's so many films and tv shows i hear that um do say something about the culture of new york or communities in new york that you wouldn't otherwise see and i don't think this is i don't think that's that film well that it shows a lot of different the different cars that you have there they all went in different directions yeah amy top as a writer and student of aristotle um gosh could i i would love to to change the intro my
Starting point is 00:45:49 intro now by the way yes yeah obviously it was the only thing i've been thinking the last half hour credit um uh we know there's two more movies that they're making in this franchise. But I would... Wow. Do you want a very super brief synopsis of what we've seen in F9, which is basically Cypher's in there. So Charlize Theron, she's got a different haircut. She gets basically kidnapped and ordered to do hacking on behalf of a guy who is basically a prince of a certain unnamed Scandinavian nation,
Starting point is 00:46:27 Scandinavian country. Okay. We're introduced to Dom Toretto has a brother who is played by John Cena, who arrives, and he's kind of a bad version of him, but then they turn him and he's good at the end. That's kind of the whole movie. The Rock's not in it because him and vin diesel have beef yes and statham's only in an after the credits scene and also they go to space interesting to me
Starting point is 00:46:53 that is did you notice that vin diesel and the rock had no scenes together wow not even at the party at the end my scene Maybe very briefly. I don't think he's there. He is. He's there with his daughter, yeah. Yeah. I don't think they're ever framed together. Why is that? I must know.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Suddenly I'm interested in the film. I think Vin Diesel got scared that his, you know, because this is kind of his one big vehicle. And if someone is able to steal the limelight in that franchise, then, you know, what's he got, Groot? Groot's pretty good. Wait, so is it, sorry, is it that it's Vin Diesel, Vin Diesel was the main guy and then The Rock came in
Starting point is 00:47:45 and then Statham? Because there are three buff bald men. Yeah, but Statham is kind of sidekick-y. I don't think you'd be threatened that Statham's going to take the franchise away, but The Rock definitely could lead the franchise, I think. If something came out about Vin Diesel, Vin Diesel got cancelled and the producers, of which vin is actually one uh which which may explain some stuff as well amy
Starting point is 00:48:10 um they would go look this thing makes so much money we can't shut it down yeah we will be led by the rock now you know for the last right and i guess the rock like i didn't know this backstory i've never seen any other films but i felt like they were equal equally strong characters in it and the rock was in charge of the gang was wasn't he yeah um so what do you what can you take any guesses at what you would like to see in in in fx which is the tense movie so like the the key things are what haircut was charlize there on him what's the special vehicle because in this one we watched it was the big nuclear-powered submarine and if nine they go to space in a car oh um and what's left at that point in a cameo one celebrity cameo of someone who they're going
Starting point is 00:48:58 to introduce into the franchise hairstyle i'm trying to think of bald i guess nice schnade o'connor style yeah or vin diesel rocking statham style true um i'm just trying to think of an unusual haircut that's i'm thinking maybe vin diesel has dreads in the next one. Okay, yeah. It's just like you have to pass it. Maybe he's wearing hers. Yeah. She should cut the, yeah. Yeah, I would see that. And then big vehicle. Rocket?
Starting point is 00:49:34 Oh, no, wait, we've done space. Well. Yeah, no, we kind of hit, yeah. What about a cruise ship? Love it. Fucking love it. Yeah. A cruise ship.
Starting point is 00:49:44 Cruise ship would be so fun. And, you know, you can have a great scene at the beginning and at the end, but they're just relaxing, having some drinks, and I'm like, okay, I'm enjoying this. Yeah. You get the actual film, and then they're back with their little cocktail umbrellas and, like, you know, having a swim.
Starting point is 00:50:02 Do they have to race the cruise ship at some point? Like, are they getting a have to race the cruise ship at some point like are they are they getting a mission done using the cruise ship that'd be so fun if one of them is like you can't race a cruise ship like you know because they all the all the dialogue is like one dude being like i know this and someone else coming in being like i know that and then someone else has more knowledge and they just i think that that energy when you're driving a cruise ship would be so funny and then they're having to race like an app and they still win and they're like smashing the little ships yeah that's great yeah i think that'd be really good
Starting point is 00:50:37 really really good who's got a cameo do you know it's got to be someone who you're like you're doing this because they really nail that like yeah who's such a serious actor patrick stewart yeah patrick stewart would be really great and you're just like patrick stewart's doing this because the money must be out of this world yeah like it was some there's there's some really good helen mirren and charlie's they're on like what do you think helen mirren got paid for being in this movie she's in like two scenes right i reckon she got at least a million but i'm really bad with money i always think a million is the biggest number like dr evil
Starting point is 00:51:20 yeah basically yeah like she probably got more than a million right to get helen mirren in two scenes in an atrocious film you'd say so yeah yeah yeah and money well spent it's crazy to me yeah it's it's just so high still to me but i mean i don't know anything a million is so much money like you know people are really struggling these days you should i don't think they should pay people that much that's my that's my two cents but i would do it if they offered me one million to cross your own picket line i would be around for sure i would cross the picket line and I would do it and if they needed me to work out 40 hours a day I would do it you'd do it
Starting point is 00:52:07 for a compliment from the rock yeah 100% okay so bald bald Shelly Sterron a cruise ship and the celebrity cameo is Amy Hoggart no it's Patrick Stewart I see Patrick Stewart you said you oh I did actually didn't I yeah what I did was I agreed with Patrick Stewart and You see you. Oh, I did actually, didn't I?
Starting point is 00:52:25 Yeah. What I did was I agreed with Patrick Stewart and then I asked for a job. I really want to be in it. Universal are paying for this podcast and promotion for X. This is all in service of promoting their new Fast movie. Yeah. I'd like to go the other way before we say goodbye. And I was sort of building up to this, this i think before we got into our shining lights but so obviously fast one through
Starting point is 00:52:51 six or seven are all locked they're all in the can but what what do you think you know to improve your movie going experience from fast eight which was uh arguably too much action what what do you think happens in fast seven and what is something you'd like to see which might make that a more enjoyable movie for someone like yourself? I need more backstory. I need to know the relationship between Vin and Michelle because, to use the actor's names,
Starting point is 00:53:19 because the whole time it's like he's betrayed you. He's your husband, he's betrayed you, but no one really is that sympathetic to her and she forgives him very easily i want to know the stakes by like really seeing their relationship and establishing that he would never do that otherwise um and i i i quite like the banter i thought it was like kind of cheesy but i like the banter between the team members a bit like the competitiveness of them when they're like asking out um ramsey at the end and like no one knows her surname and like
Starting point is 00:53:51 what's a what's a quintessentially character what's a quintessentially non-british surname that ramsey might have oh is it her surname i take everything back as her surname no no she doesn't they're her first name is ramsey we don't know her surname but you're saying ramsey is a name that you would never give a british character i want to know what what is well what yeah what random name have americans plucked out of the sky to pair with ramsey and that's what a british person sounds like ramsey oh like something like mount baton or something they think is like. Ramsay Mountbatten.
Starting point is 00:54:28 Like posh. That's so good. Yeah. That's what I think they think. Or Jeeves or something like that. Ramsay Jeeves. Potter. Ramsay Jeeves.
Starting point is 00:54:39 Ramsay Jeeves. I really hope they're two. That character I could do with more of Ramsay Jeeves. She's the tech one, right? She's the dweebo, the hot dweeb. Yeah, I could do with more banter from the team. Sure. A bit more steaks.
Starting point is 00:54:53 Hey, maybe you should check out F9. There's a bit of that, and Ramsey has more to do. So, you know, it's about two hours and 20 minutes, and it's worse than this movie, but have at it, I say. Is this, and that's the last one,'s the last one until x comes out are you guys going backwards oh yeah we should have explained that so we've watched the ninth movie we've watched fast nine nine times we're about we're watching this one eight times we haven't seen any of the ones before this and why did you not start with one once well amy why do we watch the same movie for a year on a weekly basis why anything we're problem solving we're going back
Starting point is 00:55:32 through time to try and get the answers to the questions you're asking us what is dominic and lady's relationship why are they so loyal to each other and um will you tell me if you get what i wanted which is more banter and more relationship we'll report baby okay we're sending you one question thank you what is the worst this is i really believe a question that the listeners are gonna like what was the worst film that you guys did that was that if you had to re-watch one of them which would be the last one you choose in the city to six in the city too have you seen that movie yeah i watched it with you i had a great a great time no we watched sex in the city one oh sorry yes okay that's the racist one is two right i watched one correct yeah have you seen Sex and the City 2 no there's
Starting point is 00:56:25 I think oh god there's quite a lot of what you're after I think there's a baby okay okay alright
Starting point is 00:56:34 we have a tension between a couple that sort of spans the entirety of the movie and they don't go to Russia at all Tim looks like he's going to be sick
Starting point is 00:56:41 I'm uh I've got to I've got to end this I've got to end this now amy thank you so much for joining us how can people find you and follow you and listen to your podcast and the other projects you got cooking uh my name is amy hoggart uh give a little google see i love that see what it were you like but i do have a podcast that I would love you to listen to. Starting point is 00:57:27 explaining feminism and they're just the worst stupidest guys and my voice is lowered i'm gonna listen to that today it's called feminism yeah you can see what we did and my character's horrible that's very good the links for all of these things are in the show notes if you want to click on there Amy thank you so much for joining us thanks guys
