Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to the Young Turks, the online news show. Make sure to follow and rate our show with not one, not two, not three, not four, but five stars. You're awesome. Thank you. All right, back on the Young Turks Unlock the Vault. So we're going to do a longer segment with Ben and Michael in a second. But Ricky's strong from TYT sports, everybody. Hey. So look, Ricky since he does sports is not on the young Turks a lot, but he is enormously
Starting point is 00:00:45 successful on Facebook and YouTube and has some of our best performing videos at TYT. And Ricky's also a rare guy who's had two stints at TYT. So we're actually, one of the videos we're gonna do here is Rick's last goodbye, okay? Oh, sad stuff. Okay, so let's hope that that's your last ever goodbye. We'll see. Yeah, we'll talk about why that happened. And then we have early days of Ben and Rick on TYT sports, that's hilarious. I actually want to show that one first. Okay, fine. Yeah, but t-y-t.com slash go. We're trying to do a thousand dollars a
Starting point is 00:01:29 video. And we got to get to the later videos to Ben and Michael arm wrestling. Ben getting hit with the lead pipe on camera. Me and Ben fighting. So let's go. T-y-t.com slash go. Asher, let me see where we are right now. And I'll read some names to see if we can, while we, we got to get to 9,241. Oh, so close. So we got to get a couple of hundred bucks there. So 9,241 is what we got to get to CYT.com slash go. Okay, did I read these guys? Oh, I read their names.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Okay. So Rick, for folks who don't know. Hi. Hey. So you, how long ago, I don't even remember, how long ago did you remember? How long ago did you first join Young Turks because you're part of the early crew. Yeah, I first joined in 2011 and at one point when I was working for every single show on the network. And the whole reason I came out was to launch TYT sports. Steve O decides to call me into Jenks room slash the refrigerator room.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And he says, hey, so this thing called TYT sports, it just really doesn't have any potential. So I think we should actually kill it. And that's when I was like, no, that's absolutely not going to happen. I think you just need to give me a chance. Super skeptical, which is totally allowed, and I would be skeptical of me too, like I could barely grow facial hair back in the day. And he allowed it to become my baby, and it absolutely thrived. So in a long winded answer, because I know that you need a break because you look tired, it was 2011. And then I left and then came back, and it's been a bunch of Mazel ever since. sense, you know?
Starting point is 00:03:22 What did you go to and are they still around? All right, so I went to a company called 120 Sports. It was in Chicago, so it was really easy to go back home. And the funny thing is, although it restructured and I was one of the last ones to let go, they downsized completely. Fun fact, they just got bought six, eight months ago in a sweeping acquisition period by Sinclair. So we all know about Sinclair. We've all seen the dead spin videos of local news. There's no way in hell I'd be allowed to say what I say now. And I probably would have been let go
Starting point is 00:04:15 thereafter because our politics don't align. But it was great while it lasted, met a lot of really cool people. And then I came back and Jank called me up on the phone and he was just, he would not stop crying. And he just kept saying like, please, please, we just, we just really, really need you. And the funny thing was, I think I actually did cry to Jake when I got fired. But here's the great thing about Jank, and then we'll get to whatever videos, embarrassing videos you have. Jake is the kind of mentor who you don't talk to him for like eight months, and I'll text him and be like, I really need to talk. He'll be like, give me an hour. And he'll just make the time.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Like, and this is a guy who is not only, uh, the CEO of a company, but he's in every single meeting. And he's basically like John in a company meeting. Like he always has to give his input so you know that he's listening. But outside of that, he's always there for you at every single turn. So it speaks, uh, you know, not to like kiss too much ass here, but But it's true, not to basically it speaks to your character because I was going through a horrible time before I came back and you made the time every single time I needed you. So whatever that was, that's how I feel. Well, that's amazing of you, Ray.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Thanks for saying that. I really appreciate it. So yeah. You can say something nice about me now if you want. Yeah, no, not going to do it. But you know what, look, I'm worried we're going to run out of time and that was wonderful. of you. I really want to show a video. So I know we're all kind of breaking a rule here a little bit. We're almost there. But you guys will get us there anyway. Okay, t.R.t.com slash go.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Let's show early days of Rick and Ben on TYT Sport. We did this about the baseball also. The baseball. The baseball. We did this about the baseball. And now we've been asked to do it about basketball. So with very little preparation. Let's do it. No preparation. Here's basketball relevancy. Rick, fire away. No, I want you to try to name all the teams. I want me name all the basketball teams.
Starting point is 00:06:39 By the way, huge NBA fan. But like on the spur of the moment, naming all 30 NBA teams might be a little tricky. I'm just going to name them because we have other stories to do. New Jersey Nets. Next. That's such a...
Starting point is 00:06:56 Toronto, the rap doors. Come on, come on. Did you get that, Mark? Did you get that finger wave? Cleveland Cavaliers. No, I'm afraid not. The Washington Bullets. I mean, if they were the bullets, because again, woven into the fabric of the city,
Starting point is 00:07:14 the city cares a lot about them, the name change, devastating. And then they just proceed to make personnel moves that not only don't help the team, they don't even seem to exist. and even the breakup with Jordan was awkward when he came back. I'm afraid they've done the remarkable and they have made themselves irrelevant. They could get it back. They could start by changing the name back. Charlotte Bobcats.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Anyways, San Antonio Spurs. Yeah, relevant. You know, I'm surprised because I thought we were going to get one where he busts on you because my recollection of you and Ben doing TYT sports was 90% at him busting on you. Yes, completely. I had never felt less confidence than doing a show with Ben. Not only because he always gave me endless crap, but because he has the best hair in the office.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Do you disagree? Well, I mean, I love early Ben hair. That's one of my favorite things I'm getting out of this. I remember there was one time where I was like, hey, so like, what do you put in your hair? He's like, put in it. I just, I go in, turn the faucet on, and I just put it in my hair, and that's it. Yeah, I love to see you guys go back and forth. That's my favorite thing. So I'm really curious about your last goodbye. I remember it was a little emotional,
Starting point is 00:08:41 but I don't remember anything else about it. And fine, I'll say something nice about you, okay? But hold. Hold. Of course. Thermometer upgrade, t.wit.com slash go. Let me see. Hey, 9,313. Okay, now theoretically we've got to get to 10,200 for the next video, but boy, are we running low on time. Okay, we got like eight videos with Ben and Michael. So we'll see how it goes, but I'll say this. Rick is a hell of a worker, man. And I don't mean that as an employee. I just mean as a person. Like, he, he's got that willpower that I love, right?
Starting point is 00:09:29 He puts, you know, his mind to something and he's gonna do it. So that's why that story you told about Steve-O in the refrigerator room sounded a little scary, but overall is exactly right, right? Like, you're like, no, that's not how it's gonna happen. This is how it's gonna happen instead. And then you made it happen. It's my favorite thing in the world. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It also shows the judgment of Steve O, if I don't say. As long as we're doing buzz nuts, right? So Steve's still with the company. Let me just say one very quick thing, very quick thing. The only reason I started giving Ben crap back was because every commenter was like, dude, you got to stick up yourself.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Like every single video, they were like, dude, come on. It was like, it's sort of like in little giants when they're getting shut out. And then it's like second and nine. And the whole crowd celebrates and they're like, they got a yard. Like that's what they were encouraging me to do. Just like, just give it back every once in a while. And I tried. I thought at times I was mean and not being myself. But then I learned like, that's just the TYT way. Like you just got to, you got to take it and then you better give it back or else they're just going to kill you. Yeah, believe me, we all got it back. So anyways, all right, I'm going to read, oh, no,
Starting point is 00:11:09 we got to go. All right, I got to show you the video. Okay, so this is Rick when he was leaving as you all know, because he's here. He came back. But we, of course, we didn't think he was going to come back. So this is him saying goodbye to the audience. Let's watch. Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to TYT Sports. At least, this is my last edition of TYT Sports. It has been a absolutely tremendous road for me here at the Young Turks. I have learned so much from everybody here. Ben Mankowitz, who may come off as a jagoff every once in a while, has been an incredible mentor to me.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Same with Steve O, Jake Ugar, almost everybody in the company. I came here about three years ago, and I came out here on a limb. I finished three internships. This was bound to be my fourth. Out on a limb took over TYT sports, but it took a while to transition into that. I had to convince the higher-ups just to basically get more studio time. And then once we finally did, you saw me shooting outside with locked out and whatnot. We had toilet water coming down in our old studio.
Starting point is 00:12:27 I mean, it was the times that we went through, not only as a company, but as we did it together, is just amazing and it's something that I will value forever. But I just wanted to tell you guys from me, I will still be contributing to TYAT sports. Obviously, everyone knows how important it is to me. And just going back and forth, I can tell you right now, I'm not sure you will ever meet a better group of people, people that are coming together for just one goal. We all believe in the cause. We believe in jank, but we also believe in each other, which is so incredibly important.
Starting point is 00:13:03 And something that I hope, you know, wherever the road of life in my career takes me, hopefully can resemble this. It's very, very hard. God damn. Hang on. It'll be tough to resemble what has occurred here. But it will be in great hands and thank you everyone for helping me, help support my career, and of course the Young Turks Network. Thank you. Well, it's good to have you back, brother.
Starting point is 00:13:49 So look, I'll tell you, number one, you give a pretty good emotional speech. And number two, now if I ever play poker with you, I know you're tell. When you get emotional, you touch your nose a lot. It's a classic Rick, you get about to get emotional moves. Fair point. Look, it was tough because, like, you know, they say your bar mitzvahs when you become a man, but you're 13 years old. I mean, let's be, let's be, hi, Michael, let's be real about this.
Starting point is 00:14:28 However, I mean this sincerely, this is when I became more of a man, a better person. And it was really tough and really emotional because you guys enabled me in the best way possible. You helped me flourish and you help me grow. So it was just a really, really difficult time because, you know, as people know, and then I'll stop. I came from Chicago. I had some family out here, didn't really have any friends, but this became my family. So it was really hard to say goodbye to that family. It's great that we're reunited, albeit from at least, you know, thousands of feet apart. But it feels good to be back and I'm glad we're doing the damn thing again. Yeah. You know, Rick, actually,
Starting point is 00:15:23 I know we're super late, but I'm going to read a comment because what you said, you said relates so much to this comment. So this is from our member section and it's the handle is reeling universe and they wrote in, I've been watching TYT for years now. I'm not close to family as a queer progressive stuck in Ohio from an abusive background. I love to listen to feel less alone and at this point, the host of TYT feel like friends. It's crazy how much time to think how much time you all must sit around being recorded for our sake, but I sincerely appreciate it, please always speak truth to power.
Starting point is 00:16:04 So really, universe, I love having you as family. And I love the, that's why I keep saying on the show, I love doing this show with you guys. And this is our extended family, both in terms of folks like Rick and like Emma Viglin went to majority report and we love her, right? And you should check her out there, but you know, you never know. So people go, people come back. Michael Schur has done it about 12 times. So, but I love being a family with you guys.
Starting point is 00:16:41 So Rick, you're awesome. Everybody check out TYT sports on YouTube, on Facebook, and he's got a show on Twitch.tv slash TYT as well. which I did a very crappy tease for the other day. All right. Rick, you're awesome. Thanks, brother. All right, guys. See you. Okay, we'll be right back with Ben and Michael. And guys, before we go, we got Ben and Michael arm wrestling when we come back.
Starting point is 00:17:08 We got Ben getting hit with a lead pipe on tape. Okay. And then we got me and Ben fighting. We've got to unlock that bolt. You got to make that happen. T.Y.T.com slash go. Please do that and we're trying to do a thousand bucks per video. Now we're falling a lot behind. But stay right here.
Starting point is 00:17:29 We've got awesome videos coming up. We'll be right back. All right. All right. Young Turks unlocked, the vault special, Jake. Ben Mangwitz, Michael, sure, everybody. So Ben and I started the Young Turks together, as I think a lot of you know. But Michael was one of the original four hosts, along with Jill Pike. So we did a ton of shows together. I want to fight for me saying that I was one of the
Starting point is 00:18:07 original three. I was in your apartment. And so was Jill though. So honestly, I don't two, Jank, and there were just three of us. And we had your ex-girlfriend at that time call in. That's where Zara was there. That's right. So, well, you know what? We'll have to unlock the vault and see who was on first. You or Jill, okay? And so, okay, so guys, we got awesome videos here. We probably will not get to all of them, partly because we were doing a great job of unlocking earlier. We've unlocked a little less lately. But there's Ben and Michael arm wrestling. There's Ben and Michael learning about Tinder. I want to go to that one first. It's going to be great. So let's take a look at t.com slash go and see if we got anywhere near.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Theoretically we'd have to be at 11,200 right now to unlock a bolt. But no, no, not really near it. No, 9,612. Okay, okay, look, since we're running short on time. I'm going to go to the Tinder one. But guys, t-y-t.com slash go makes all the difference, okay? And you get to be progressive change and have fun and have fun with us. So, and especially because Michael's got to run soon. And because I want to see it so bad. Ben and Michael learn about Tinder. As sure, you got that one? Actually, before you go to it real quick, And keep on giving if you can, obviously, and it's tough times too. But Cyborg Manifesto gave a lot on Super Chat.
Starting point is 00:19:48 So I want to shout out to him. He said from a UT Austin grad. Kevin C, another one who gave a lot on Super Chat. Big fans this I found you guys three years ago. John makes the show's fun. Wonder if I'll get a, I will get a notice at all this time. Okay. Well, Kevin, we notice you.
Starting point is 00:20:04 So thank you. You're awesome. John makes the show fun. Oh, yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Is there a different John at the YT? I'm just asking, I'm just confused. I'm sure there's a logical answer to that, but out the top of my head, I can't figure out what it is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:22 And Robert McEnany, I assume no relation to Kaylee, wrote it on a superchat, loved TY, and I say the TYT cannabis shirt idea. Well, I got news, good news for you. We already have one. Shop tYT.com. I wear it sometimes. and every April 20th I wear it, it's a TYT made out of cannabis. So anyways, all right, Michael and Ben, early days at TYT, find out what Tinder is.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Let's watch. I'm on a few dating apps right now. Yeah, I was going to say, are you? So we're at- Yeah, I've, okay, so I went on Tinder. It's the most depressing thing on the planet. Isn't Tinder the one, forgive me, where you meet and the whole point is that you meet and hook up with people? I suppose that's what the intention is. I'm on J-Tinder.
Starting point is 00:21:07 If you want to get depressed, join Tinder. What's depressing about Tinder? It's, look, Tinder is all about image. It's not like Match.com or E-Harmony where you read about the personality or the certain characteristics of that person has. With Tinder, it's just about looks. Is the person attractive? If he or she is attractive, you know, you swipe to the left, I believe, or right. But who determines that?
Starting point is 00:21:31 Oh, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the 10D. Yeah, so I am the 10D, and I'm looking at a bunch of different profile. I'm like, huh, cute, not cute, cute, not cute. And do the people see their rate? One of the hardest parts of getting older is feeling like something's off in your body, but not knowing exactly what. It's not just aging. It's often your hormones, too.
Starting point is 00:21:51 When they fall out of balance, everything feels off. But here's the good news. This doesn't have to be the story of your next chapter. Hormone Harmony by Happy Mammoth is an herbal formula made with science-backed ingredients, designed to fine-tune your hormones by balancing estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and even stress hormones like cortisol. For a limited time, get 15% off your entire first order at happy mammoth.com with code next chapter at checkout. Visit happy mammoth.com today and get your old self back naturally. No. Do you know if you've been swiped away? I'm sure, no. You are not notified if you've been swiped away. I'm sure that would be devastating. I have no interest in knowing that. But I guess if you're not swiped toward, you assume that you were swiped away. Right. So what happens is if I like someone and I swipe, I'm attracted to you, and that person also swipes that they're attracted to me, then we are a match. And then we are able to communicate with one another through the app.
Starting point is 00:23:06 But if one party is not interested, then you never get the opportunity to chat. It's a little bit genius. Yeah. Yeah, I like it. It's where it was going. It's a T-I-N-D-E-R. 42% of Americans know someone who is used online dating. That's up from 31% in 2005, which goes back to the whole stigma thing.
Starting point is 00:23:25 That's becoming an irrelevant question. Know someone. Yeah, here's who doesn't. My dad and mom. They don't know anyone who want to date. My mom doesn't know anyone who emails. Yeah. I know, Josh.
Starting point is 00:23:37 That's right, that's right. And by the way, 29% of Americans know someone who met a spouse or other long-term partner through online dating, and that's up from 15% in 2005. What's the other? 29, that I don't believe. You don't believe. 30% of people know somebody about their spouse or that seems very high. Have you ever online dated? Never, no. No. I have. I have.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Did you enjoy it? No. You didn't enjoy it. I did not enjoy it. I just, I had to jump in with the, well, there were two moments that I really enjoyed. But far and away, the best was right in the beginning when Michael just hits us with, I'm on J-Tinder. That's a, that's a, that's a 10 out of 10 joke. But later, again, it's the kind of thing I do well.
Starting point is 00:24:20 Where I'm like, T-I-N-D-E-R, it's just a great little moment to show just how out of it, how out of it we are. I enjoyed that. That was, that was good. See, that's funny because I misheard. I'm glad you clarified it. I thought Michael said he was on gay Tinder. No, I think you said J Tinder, right? I said J Tinder. Yeah. Yeah. The best. Yeah, yeah. And because I was going to say, Michael, I got good news for you. They came up with Grindr. On J Tinder, you can only swipe, no. That's the weird thing about it.
Starting point is 00:24:59 And then you can go into, you know, J therapy for having been swiped against. That's right, yeah. Right. That's right. You realize that you only go on this, only bad things could happen. I know, but I can't resist it. Yeah, right. But I can't deal with it.
Starting point is 00:25:15 I was rejected. So in the old days, I would have made a joke about M Tinder and it would have later gotten me in trouble. But anyways, so that has. had so many great parts. First of all, mention of e-harmony. Hmm. Yep. Right? Does e-harmonies still exist? Like, I think Match.com still exists. I think that Match.m. Match.com is the one that I used. I was on J-date and Match.com for a very brief period of time.
Starting point is 00:25:46 And I was not telling an untruth there. It was pretty disastrous. I mean, first of all, it was disastrous. There was very few people who were interested in me. And then it was disastrous because the people who were interested in me, I was not at all interested in. I had one pretty horrible experience and two or three pretty dull one. Wow, that's kind of interesting. I want to unlock the vault on that. Anyway, it's so funny because all these videos are from so long, it's a stretch of 18 now almost 19 years, right? So all these different studios that we were in, that was one of the YouTube studios that we'd use temporarily. And reading those stats about 29% of people are doing online dating,
Starting point is 00:26:32 now that number is 99%. Yeah, I'm gonna say it's from 29 to 92. Yeah, we're still in the, I'm still in that non the zero percentage, the low percentage. I'm still a one percent. But the the other thing about it is that, you know, the percentages, how different they are, And how much has changed since I mean, that doesn't seem, it doesn't feel like that was long ago. But it, you know, those numbers and everything we were talking about, it seems now ages ago that that happened. Yeah, but it's right. It doesn't feel like it. It feels recent. But that's just how we progressed. I mean, I still can't, you know, the notion that there's eight years since we were 45 is absurd. It's like an episode of card charts too. So 29%. Oh, that seems high.
Starting point is 00:27:20 That's right. That seems high. So I'm going to go higher. Yeah, and I believe you guys are the only people to ever use the word tin D. Well, Anna, Anna, God bless you. She jumped right in with 10D. She played along instantly. That's true. She didn't say 10D. Yeah, yeah. But it's different, too. If we went back farther in the vault and we had Jill Pike, we would have heard all about the date.
Starting point is 00:27:51 That's true. Oh, yeah, we would have heard. All about the day. I mean, we talked earlier about how Mendoza Frere would have a field day with Jesus on what would Jesus do if he runs for office. But if Jill runs for office, oh, lock the ball. Don't I like, lock it. Before we knew that you didn't know when you were rejected, I very much enjoyed Anna saying, yeah, I mean, yeah, I guess if they swipe bright, you know, that must feel devastating. Like, she's like, like, I wouldn't know what that felt like.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Yeah, right. For those people. Yeah. Well, for those people who aren't picked by every single other person there near, that must be very difficult. All right, we got a thermometer update. Let's go to it at t.yt.com slash go. I want to unlock, oh, 10,293, okay, there you go.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Well, we would have passed the first video then. So let's see, you know what, let's, am I not reasonable? Can we get to 11,000 and we'll unlock a couple, all right? 11,000 because we're running out of time. So 11,000 at t.com slash go. Let me pale blue dot in the member section, you said, these guys should do old school as a call-and-show every night. Well, I agree.
Starting point is 00:29:11 That would be awesome. It's a good idea. And Naudius Maximus wrote, possible pipe fight with Ben on my way to t-y-t.com slash go right now. So, Ben, you know, we found it. We found the video of you getting hit. Oh, really? Oh, really? All right. Well, that's, uh, that's it. Is that going to happen? Is that what we're about to show? Asher, we got the actual video, right? From Miami, from Miami? From Miami? From Miami? Wow. Yeah. All right. Yeah, I looked for it once online. I couldn't, I couldn't find it. I'll have to, uh, it's good to know. You have to send it to me. I got to show, uh, I got to show my wife. She doesn't really believe it. All right. Well, look, uh, we were, um, trying to raise 20,
Starting point is 00:29:49 $25,000 tonight. So if somebody wants to throw in just, hey, look, it's our 15th birthday. So overall, we've been on air for 18, almost 19 years down, right? But online video, we've only done for 15, only done for 15 years. We're the longest running internet show in history on the planet. So young church is ironically, the oldest show. So now 15,000. would get us to 25,000, I'm not saying anything. I'm just saying. You give us $15,000. You can see me get hit by a lead pipe as often as you want. Oh, yeah. We'll send you the house. Yeah, we'll send you the video. That's right. Yeah. And I'll do it. I'll show. I found the Miami Herald article. I'd tell this story before we show it, which is great. I've told it before.
Starting point is 00:30:42 So we were going through when we moved, we found the box of old papers. There's great stuff in there. and including the Miami Herald article that they did a few days later. And they talked about how I'd been hit. And then they wanted to see the bruise. The photographer did. And we had that very small restroom at Whammy where we worked in Miami, where Jack and I met. And you weren't even there yet, right? Because I think it was pretty early on in my time there that, like, we've been on the air like four weeks.
Starting point is 00:31:10 And I'm like, I'm working for channel 69 in Miami. No one's watching. The video doesn't match the audio. And I'm about to get killed. What I thought right before the guy hit me with the pipe. I'm like, this is going to be a gun and I'm dead and it's not even a network affiliate. But mercifully, it turned out it was just like a lead pipe. And so then the news that Miami Herald wanted to do a story on and they want to take a picture.
Starting point is 00:31:35 And I go, okay, I'll show it to you, but it's like on my hamstring, like, you know, in between my knee and the end of my butt. Right. So I'm like, all right, you can take a picture of it, but it's just a horrible. bruise. It's the worst bruise, certainly I've ever had, probably any of the guys have ever had. It's just, you know, it was like this long and it was wide and it was white in the middle and all blue and black around it. It was huge. It was like a, you could see the lead pipe indentation. So I go, all right, you can take a picture of it, but you got to get tight enough. I, you can't, I don't want to see my pants around my legs and I don't want to see the bottom of my underwear, right? And he's
Starting point is 00:32:10 like, yeah, yeah, sure, sure. And so then the picture of the Miami Herald, obviously, is a guy with his pants around his ankles and wearing underwear that you can plainly see so they could show the bruce. It was the goddamn mainstream media. Once again, saying one thing and doing something else. That's right. Yeah. So that's where you learn the hard way about mainstream media. That's right. So by the way, one quick last thing. And then I'm going to go to another video of Ben and Michael arm wrestling. So we, if you go to t.com slash press on, you could see different things you can name in the studio.
Starting point is 00:32:52 We've got mics that are named after you guys. We got chairs named after you guys, always, depending on how much you give. And like Michael said, $15,000 and Michael will go over to Ben's house right now and hit it with a lead pipe. And then we'll get it on tape. Jesus will tape it. and then we'll put it up in the next on Lock the Vault, okay? Or we'll send it special to you, okay, just so you can have it.
Starting point is 00:33:14 Now, I'm not, I don't remember who won the fight between, I mean, the arm wrestling between Ben and Michael. So it was Michael, it was Michael. Hold on, hold on. All right. Okay, sorry. Yeah, dude, don't, as my daughter. I don't know, I don't remember either.
Starting point is 00:33:31 As my daughter, eight-year-old daughter would say, don't spoil the beans. I'm sorry. All right, I don't know if we've got any movement, Asher, but I think we're just, do you have something? Okay, let's take a look at the thermometer, see where we are. Oh, no, we don't have that. Okay, sorry, my bad. All right, screw it, let's just go to the video. Let me just say the point of the video, really, the point of our armhouse is really not about who was in any way.
Starting point is 00:34:01 So we're not really, we haven't really spoiled any of it. Okay, no, the beans are fine. Everything's going to be okay. Let's take a look at the bit. Okay, here we go. And you do have to do the uncomfortable holding of the hands underneath. I'm comfortable hold hands all the time. We hold hands all right.
Starting point is 00:34:19 Just pretend you're at a movie. I'm going to count down three, two, one, and on one you're going to go. I can already tell I have no chance. No, I feel like I've lost. I feel like I've lost. Three, two, one. Okay, Michael seems to have the advantage, but it is definitely not a no-brainer. We're in a heated competition as we speak.
Starting point is 00:34:40 And you know what? Maybe Ben outlasts. Whenever it's close like this, willpower get that goes into effect. You know what? Oh, look at Trump. Try to serve. Trying to get leverage. They are both struck.
Starting point is 00:34:56 Jesus. No. You just quit. $40 to quit right now. Mr. Quay, right now. 40? Yeah, 40. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:35:05 This might be the longest one yet. This is a netlock. This is fascinating. No, no, no, no. Keep it going. Aw. Oh, man. This is a Titanic battle.
Starting point is 00:35:21 We're going to win this surprise. No. You thought you were. God, this is amazing. I don't see. It's so close. Come on. Ben representing two factors of the network.
Starting point is 00:35:54 Oh, no! Oh, it happened. It happened. All right. Wow. And we have a winner. Shurzy, epic politics man, advancing to the next round, representing 2012, TYT shows. Okay. We had fun on this show. We had fun on this show. So the degree of pain that both of us were in for, I'm not kidding. in six weeks? I mean, the first two weeks, I could barely use my left hand in any way. I mean, just my forearm was in intense pain. Michael's left-handed. We had to go lefty. Most of the things were righty. I drew Michael, who's the lone lefty, and Michael couldn't go righty
Starting point is 00:36:44 because he'd hurt his shoulder playing softball, and he was in a sling. So we had to, I mean, he wasn't wearing the sling then, but he had no strength in his right hand. So we had to go lefty. So I'm proud that I hung in lefty. And I think the story really is, The fact that I was like almost eliminated so many times, it's like I was... Starting point is 00:38:04 16 seed and I took Duke to triple overtime. But, you know, in the end, you know, their athleticism won out. Well, look, there was, as always with all of these videos, so many great parts. When Michael wins at the end and he like points at the camera, he actually looks like a professional wrestler. That's right, yeah. And I've got Michael Shure. and dead last for who would be a professional wrestler.
Starting point is 00:38:30 Totally, that's right, yeah. And Ben, I gotta give you credit in 18 different ways. You know, I remembered how long my match with JR was, but I had forgotten that you and Michael had the second longest match. And number one, you were going lefty, that's a giant disadvantage. Number two, you're cracking jokes in the middle of it. I've got to give you credit for that. And number three, you hung in there for a long time. And number four, he actually kind of, like, I don't want to say cheated.
Starting point is 00:39:06 That's too strong. But he really put his body into it. Yeah, he seemed to get out of the chair a little bit. Yeah, and he turned the shoulder or stood up. Yeah, he turned the shoulder. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I thought there were a couple times in there where I thought it was going to be it. Like I was like, no, I have this.
Starting point is 00:39:22 he's exhausted now and now somehow I'm going to take him. But it's hard to watch. It was so painful. Not right then, not for 24 hours, but oh my God, it was pain. So JR said that after our match, he never arm wrestled again. I don't think I could, you know, with a, in a serious way. Yeah, so you're also retired from the arm wrestling game? It was brutal.
Starting point is 00:39:49 It was so unbelievably painful. And I hated to lose. I mean, I get it. I can pat myself on the back for hanging in there. You know, and Michael cheated and used his left hand. It's not a big deal. But no, no, he beat me fair and square, but it, but I didn't, I did not like losing. And I'm not, like, I couldn't have beaten you or JR or probably Andrew, who was deceptively powerful.
Starting point is 00:40:15 But I am, I am stronger than I look, right? And that, that's all I have. I'm stronger than I look. I don't look strong at all, but I can hang. Like, you wouldn't beat me in 10 seconds. You definitely beat me, but I can hang for a little bit. So I wanted to win. I wanted to win and I wanted to make the semifinals as like, oh, I can't believe it before, you know, J.R. annihilated. Yeah. So having played against you in sports, I know you're strong. But it's so funny how we're all, like, we play bust knots and we like, you know, and we take it as well as we give it. It's all that stuff, right?
Starting point is 00:40:48 But we're all secretly super competitive because the minute you said, I couldn't meet you in 10 seconds. I thought, yeah, I could. Of course, that's right. Yeah, I mean, by the way, you can beat me in 16 seconds. It's like, but I, but I don't make, it's not a secret. I'm incredibly competitive and what I try to teach my daughter and what I tell my wife, because she's always like, you know, when we play and I'm like and I win, she's like,
Starting point is 00:41:13 what are you doing? Why are you making such a big deal out of it? I'm like, I'm not. I'm just trying to win. Like, you were playing tennis. You went to a tennis scholarship. What I, you know, you don't, I can't hit a drop shot because you're too far away. Like, what do you mean?
Starting point is 00:41:26 And that I tell, like, I'm very competitive. I have no issue with losing as I didn't then. Like I was, you know, first of all, I was exhausted. But I mean, afterwards, like, part of competition is somebody loses. I love losing if I tried. I mean, it's just part of the thing. It's no big deal. But competing is fun.
Starting point is 00:41:45 It's fun. Yeah, 100%. Are you kidding me? That arm wrestling thing, contest I had with JR that we showed earlier. And it's actually, I'm not even playing. That's like top 10 proudest moment for me. He was clearly stronger than me. And did you win? No, no, I lost. But I, but I hung in there for 10 minutes at like almost at the, at the end of the table. But I just wouldn't give up at the the last couple of inches and then I got them all the way back up to the right to the middle and then he beat me and so and guys I could tell you a thousand stories of how I gave it my all and lost including one from earlier this year. And so I want you to learn from it because you should
Starting point is 00:42:35 never be embarrassed about losing as long as you gave it you're all. You should be super proud of the effort that you put in. And I mean, God, nothing, nothing describes the progressive movement up until now better than that. We've given it our all, and we've taken a lot of tough losses. But I think we set it up for the future. And I'm super confident about it going forward. But that's okay. But more important than politics, just in anything in life, if you're afraid to try, you've already lost. Ooh. How do we? Here's a significant distinction between the two of us. Like I agree up to a point in what you just said, but I'm curious whether in five seconds you can identify the moment where we disagree or where you see it.
Starting point is 00:43:19 Yeah, no, look, I don't know that I'm going to phrase it exactly right, but I know that if you think the odds are too long, you're not going to get in that game. Yeah, or once you realize it, you don't have to give it your all every time. That's okay. I mean, like, you know, you play for a while you've had fun and they're like, I don't need to give my all here, but I'm going to save my all for another time. Okay, so we're out of time. So I'm going to make a call here. Okay, so here's what we're going to do. Bob B. Tony wrote in, that's a handle on our website, t.yt.com slash join, said, yo, Ben Mank is going to have to share that date story on old school soon. Okay. I can do that. I can do that within within reason.
Starting point is 00:44:06 I was going to say within reason because your facial expression, as you told the story, made me think, I don't think you can tell the whole story. That's the sense. I can tell it was. It was just incredibly embarrassing. And mostly that's all it was, was incredibly embarrassing. And like a, like I, how do I get out of here? And I can't believe this person exists in the world. But, but I can tell 82%. Yeah, I have a story like that about a date I went on too. So we'll save that for the next old school. And I'm going to save, look, so the port of the part of the point or the main, theoretically the main point of the special was to raise money because we really need to finish strong this year. And we got to, you know, be your voice.
Starting point is 00:44:49 And so I don't want to like ruin the point of the special and just go, ah, and whenever we do this, don't worry, we're to show you all the videos. No, okay? So you get nothing more. No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. So I'm going to show one more video here, but we really didn't get anywhere near the 25,000. Let's just keep it real. Asher, can I see where we are now? Can I see the thermometer? And then 10,868. Okay, didn't even get to 11,000. Let's just keep it real. Okay, so let me put it this way. By the next old school, which is next week, I mean, you guys was going to see the one we shot yesterday tomorrow, okay? But by next week, if we get the extra 15,000, which we almost certainly will, we will show you the Ben Lead Pipe thing, okay? So I just, I want to be a man
Starting point is 00:45:46 of my word. I said we had to get there to show. But you said we will get there by next Monday? I would be surprised if we didn't. But okay, I just couldn't tell whether you said we won't or we did. Oh, okay, good. No, no, likely we will. But there is one video I did not promise you guys that we can show you. And given that Ben's grandfather is featured in Mank on Netflix, which you should definitely check out. So that's Herman Mankwitz, it's super badass. But we have one with your dad that I wanted to share with you, okay? So your dad joined us to pay to do NFL picks. I don't know that at all.
Starting point is 00:46:29 Yeah. So that's Mank Jr. Frank Banquets. That's right. And he's passed away now. But Ben's mom would come on, Ben's dad, my dad from time to time.
Starting point is 00:46:42 So Asher, we got that one to. So we'll have this one. Do we have a date from this? Do we know like when this is from? I mean, I'm pretty sure it's before 2014. But yeah,
Starting point is 00:46:55 I'd be curious. So Ben, as Asher's looking that up, you know, I don't, I'm an annoying guy who doesn't have enough time to watch a whole movie in one sitting. I do it in a couple of parts. So I'm watching Manc and I watched about a third of it. I can't wait to see what happens at the end. Don't spoil the beans. But I got to the part where, well, I mean, in the beginning, they're in World War II. It's 1940, right? But we haven't joined yet. And Herman's talking about his kids back home. So how old was your, that made me think, wait, if how old was Frank in 1940 and when did he go to the dates? Like the movie takes place. It's set in 1940, but the
Starting point is 00:47:41 flashbacks are 1930, 1934 and 1937. So that scene when he says, poor Sarah, my grandmother is back east with the family, back east with the kids. I think that was actually 1934 when that happen. It might even have been 1930. So, but I think it was 34. So my dad would either have been six or 10. Because in 1940, he was 16 and nobody would have needed to be back home with the kid. Right. And so do you remember how old your dad was? Did he ever tell you? Do you remember when he went to World War II? My dad signed up on December 6th, December 7th, 1941. My father was 17. and he enlisted probably as soon as he turned 18. He didn't wait to get drafted.
Starting point is 00:48:30 And I was like, oh, that's badass that you enlisted and didn't wait to get drafted. And he instantly was like, everybody was going to get drafted. Like there was nothing heroic about it. I just wanted to pick. I mean, I got it. It's just like my dad. But he was like, I wanted to be able to pick where I went. And he went and he enlisted in the army.
Starting point is 00:48:45 And, you know, he didn't want to go on a boat. And then they were offering, I think, $25 more a month, maybe even more, maybe $50 more a month if you join the Air Force, which is part of the Army, the Army Air Force wasn't independent of the Army then. And so he was really tempted for another $50 a month. But then he learned if you join the Air Force very quickly that you'd have to jump out of an airplane. And he was like, I'm fine in the Army. Army's fine. So December 7th, I feel like that's a date I should remember. Yeah, the date will live in our minds for a long time.
Starting point is 00:49:27 Yeah, wow, man, it's been a while. It was so 59, 79, almost 79 years ago. And next year will be the 80th, yeah. Yeah, 79 years ago, almost exactly to this day, Ben's dad signed up for World War II. But Asher, what was the date that he came on if you found it? January 5th, 2013. All right, so he was, so he's picking playoff games. Yeah, so this was the year before he passed.
Starting point is 00:49:58 All right, let's watch. Welcome everybody to Al Jazeera Sports, a very special edition of the broadcast. TYT Sports, Ben McAwitz, Michael Schur, Frank Mancoitz, helping us make the picks this week. My father, dad, how you doing? Good, thank you. Dad, you taught me how to gamble. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:19 Is that? And not a other thing. I was going to say. And by the way, you made a lot of money. Yeah. You're a terrible teacher. That's what I was wondering. So Rick, of course, here producing the show.
Starting point is 00:50:33 So Rick, we'll just make our picks for this week, right? Yeah. And unlike most weeks, we'll keep track and we'll see how my dad did. And if he did okay, he won't be here next week. But we'll call him up and we'll get his pick. But don't we usually put some salad in the middle here? Yeah, sure. Okay.
Starting point is 00:50:47 You'll put $20 in? Sure. For whoever has the best week? Sure. Redskins, number one. Redskins will cover. Rick? God, this is so hard because I hate agreeing with you.
Starting point is 00:51:00 And the fact that he completed nine of 18 passes in that final game in a must-win game against the Cowboys, it's really hard to pick the Redskins. You know I bet over 18 and a half completions for Robert Griffin in that game? He completed nine. Wait, wait. You're saying he's going to complete over 18-and-half?
Starting point is 00:51:16 I did. It was a bet. If it was a 10th, you would have lost. It was an attempt, I would have lost. I know, I was great. It was not, I didn't check at any point during the game. I was like, man, this one's not happening. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:30 So a couple of things out of that. That was a quick one. But number one, the Ben was joking about Al Jazeera sports because we were in the old current TV studio there. And at that point, current TV had just gotten bought by Al Jazeera. Yeah, we did not stay. Hey, right wingers, Ann Mendoza, Frere, we did not stay in Al Jazeera, okay? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but we didn't. Yeah. And so, but Ben, that's funny because earlier in the post game today, I was telling Anna and the audience that I taught
Starting point is 00:52:10 pro how to gamble. And they were shaming me. he'll figure it out right um yeah so my dad uh my uncle don uh my dad's brother was a serious gambler i mean he had a he was a convulsive gambler he bet a lot of money and uh so every sunday he would my dad and don would talk in the morning and they would discuss what football games to bet on and don invented this thing called the act that you'd have to bet on games covered by the act and the act meant games on TV. If it was games on TV, you had to put a bet on it. Now that would be devastating for Don because every game is on TV.
Starting point is 00:52:52 But so they would go over the games and the act and if Don liked him and then Don would presumably bet hundreds of dollars, maybe $1,000 and my dad would bet through Don who had a bookie and my dad would bet $22 to win 20 on like four games. And I would go listen on the other phone at age, you know, 7, 8, 9, 10 and sort of write it down and follow along. So to very early age, I knew if the, you know, Falcons were getting five and a half points against the Rams that they could still lose. And you could win your bet, which of course at an early age, you were amazed by. Like I just, that's why I thought every under, like, you're telling me the Falcons can lose 2420 and we win. I mean,
Starting point is 00:53:29 why would you bet the Falcon? I don't care of their playing. Like that's, that's insane. But once I got that, that was it. It was really set in stone there at an early age, even though my father was not really a gamble. So I want to ask you about Mank Senior, Herman Mangwitz, and et cetera. But first, I want to do a quick thermometer update. And then after those stuff, well, oh, we got past 11,041. But actually, Asher, there's one other thermometer update I want to do. If you guys can pull up the big one, the one where we're trying to get to $2 million, because we're so close to a mark here that I want to show people, because we just need about a little over, oh, look at that, $421, I think, to get to 1.7 million.
Starting point is 00:54:21 So if we get to 421, that would be amazing. I mean, you got it? There it is. Yeah. I think that's an old one. Because the one that's public is- That's $2,346, by the way, in case you'd like to know quickly how much was- Yeah. I mean, we'll take it if you do the $2,000 some odd dollars. That would be amazing. T.wit.com slash go. All right, anyways, let's finish up. So, Ben, real quick on that stuff, do you remember how old you were when you learned how to gamble from your dad? Yeah, like I said, I mean, when I became a serious sports fan. So, you know, I probably, I said 7, 8 or 9, but it would have been like at least 75. So I'd say 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. That went on for a while. So, you know, into my early teens where I'd just listen in on the other line.
Starting point is 00:55:06 And Don would always talk about the act. I love the notion of the act like Monday night football. Do you have a bet? Monday at a football. It's covered by the act. Like what kind of crazy question is that? All right. I love that.
Starting point is 00:55:18 And so did I know Herman drank a lot. Did he also gamble a lot? Oh, no. Of course. You'll see it in the movie. He was a compulsive gambler. He gave it to Don. I mean, my dad didn't drink or gamble, really.
Starting point is 00:55:32 I mean, you know, like dad would, when he knew I gambled, he'd call on the Kentucky Derby. And he'd be like, you know, let's put $50 on this horse. And then tonight he'd call back and he'd be like, let's make it 100. And I'll send you a check, which of course, he never did. But like, it didn't matter because, I mean, it's not, it wasn't even vaguely. I if I'd lost $2,000 on his account, I never would have paid. You know, so I mean, it was, um, he, uh, so he, but he didn't really, he just didn't, it didn't get him.
Starting point is 00:55:59 And he didn't drink. He'd occasionally have a single malt scotch, but I mean, he'd never have a second one. My brother said he got drunk one time that he saw, uh, grow on. out my brother's 12 years old. So no, he didn't get it, but, you know, apparently skipped a generation. But Herman drank a gambled a ton. You know, he, I mean, my brother was asked in one of these interviews to promote the movie. What's the, you know, what's the biggest misconception about the Mankowitz family as if all
Starting point is 00:56:27 of America has some conception of it, but the movie world that cares about it in the political world, I guess, a little bit. And my brother answered incredibly quickly that we're rich. And Herman was the highest paid writer in Hollywood for a good number of years. And when he died in 1953, my grandmother had no money and she was able to stay in her house, a nice tiny little house in Brentwood, California, a really nice neighborhood. But through the generosity of one of her sister's husbands and, you know, John Houseman, the producer, I mean, she didn't know in the house, people just let her stay there because they cared about Herman.
Starting point is 00:57:05 and they cared about her. You know, my dad didn't inherit a dollar. And I didn't inherit a dollar. I mean, I did great. And I had all kinds of benefits of being a bank of which. And I'm doing okay. But, but that, and almost all of that was gambling, was that he, and not just gambling, but he didn't care about money.
Starting point is 00:57:20 I mean, he'd lend people money. And if they didn't give it back, like, well, they don't have it then. You know, what are you going to do? Lend somebody $5,000 and then ask for it back if they can't pay their rent. No, what are you crazy? He just didn't care at all about money. It was not, you know, and, and, and, and he, bet $10,000 at the drop of a hat. And if he'd lose it, you know, they twice had to move
Starting point is 00:57:39 out of their house in Beverly Hills to an apartment on Olympic Boulevard still in Beverly Hills so that the kids could stay in the school district. So yeah, Herman had a gambling problem. But he also just didn't, money was not, it was not a marker for him of success. Yeah, that's amazing. I love that story. Super last thing. Do you think that you became more of a gambler because you knew your grandfather was such a gambler? I don't think so. I just think, you know, you get the, you get that feeling, right? I mean, you know, it's what compulsive behavior is, you know, and you get some juice from it. And, you know, you know for me that the, the, the, the, the, what's terrible for me is that
Starting point is 00:58:22 I'll chase 100,000 of dollars to try and get back even. But if I win 200, I'll stop, right? I mean, so it's just this, of course you're going to lose money that way. And the losses for me, are emotionally devastating and the winds are like, okay, good. I won that better. But the losses are like, oh God, what's wrong? I can't. How can I possibly think of what I could have done with this $400? You know, it's not psychologically. That's not a stable thing in my life. It's insane the way I gamble.
