Starting point is 00:00:29 I used to believe that I was a naive person and that I was just too young to understand the world and even though I had gut feelings about people, about situations, about myself, I needed to trust the adults in my life to make decisions for me. That was until I had a situation where my mom set me straight. I was having an issue with one of my girlfriends where they didn't want to come back for my birthday
Starting point is 00:00:52 and it really hurt me, but I was trying to act nonchalant and like it didn't matter even though it really mattered. and I had a conversation with this girlfriend at the time about the fact that I felt like she wasn't giving that much effort into our relationship and she expressed to me that she wanted to be in a relationship it's just it was hard because she's lazy when I told my mom that she kind of did one of these
Starting point is 00:01:19 looked me in the face and she said it doesn't make sense what do you mean It doesn't make sense. It makes perfect sense. Like, she's just got a lot on her plate. And no, no, no, no, no. She said she's lazy. That doesn't make sense. If somebody would want to commit to you, Zerk, they'd be there for you. I mean, yeah, but like, I don't know. We're young. You know, it's, it's fine. But is it? I started to actually realize, wait a minute. I know this. is bad. I feel really bad about this. And it didn't make sense. None of it did. The relationship was falling apart in front of me. I didn't want to admit it, but I was kind of just trying to push it under the rug just so I could tell my friends I was in a relationship. And I really liked this person. I wanted to continue dating them. It was falling apart and I didn't want to admit it because I thought, well, that would be naive of me. Listen, if it doesn't make sense, it means it isn't good.
Starting point is 00:02:30 If it does not make sense, it means it's not true. I have seen people in the adult world get scammed out of money, out of time, out of love, because they didn't listen to themselves. And they thought, well, you know, I'm not going to jump to conclusions. No, you need to have conclusions. You need to at least ask questions. You can make assumptions. I think assumptions are dangerous, but if you don't know for certain, and it doesn't make sense, why are you taking that as it's okay? It'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:03:09 There was another instance. I was with my friend getting a brunch. She had just told me that she'd signed for a modeling agency. I was so happy for her. And then I asked her, well, when's your first gig? When are you going to start, you know, modeling? Maybe I'll see you in like a Calvin Klein ad. that'd be pretty cool. And she told me, well, it's kind of interesting. Like, they took all my photos, all my head shots and stuff. And, like, I have a bunch of these photos. She's showing me the photos on the phone.
Starting point is 00:03:37 I'm like, oh, my go, girl. Like, heck yeah. And then she tells me, it's weird, like, they took all these photos. They told me that it was going to be complimentary. And then as soon as I was done, they asked me for $400. Huh? What do you mean? And she started to explain to me, well, that's just kind of how it works, like in
Starting point is 00:03:58 modeling, you kind of have to pay, you know, for you to get your foot in the door. Really. I get paying somebody for photography. But what these people were doing is they were extorting my friend and basically telling her that if she did not pay up, she wasn't going to get any gigs, they weren't going to do anything. And all of the hard work she had done with this agency was going to be void. I asked her, does that make any sense to you?
Starting point is 00:04:30 that somebody would charge you money to get you gigs aren't they like the ones that want you to work for them why would they charge you money to work with them and i kind of stumped her a little bit because i think that was the first time she really thought about it and she's like yeah it doesn't make sense some things are too good to be true most things are too good to be true if somebody is trying to convince you that that's just a really good friend like nothing's going on like chill and then you see on there find my friends that they're hanging out with them at their place every day and y'all are in a relationship it doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense it doesn't I'm just I'm just telling you it doesn't make sense now whether or not you take that seriously and you
Starting point is 00:05:25 decide, okay, I'm going to investigate, okay, I'm going to see, like, what is going on? That is entirely in your control. But the blatant lying and gaslighting of yourself to believe that something is not the way it is just because you want to feel like better about something, why would you do that? Starting point is 00:07:06 Learn more at aboutamazon.ca. That because it's easier than confronting the harsh reality of things. I don't want to admit to myself that my relationship is failing. Why would I do that? That's terrible. What? But it needs to be done. And I think when you start to try to live your life,
Starting point is 00:07:36 in a way that does make sense, you'll also quickly realize a lot of things in this life don't make any sense. And you know what? Some things you'll never get to the bottom of. Questions about the universe or the world or how we're even here and what was flying above my house yesterday that, you know, swallowed up a cow on the farm. I don't know what that was. I'm not going to ask any questions. It doesn't really make sense. and there were like green people and stuff anyways never mind um you just will never know and it's okay it's just life it doesn't make sense that somebody would betray me why would someone go against me when i showed them so much love yeah it it doesn't make sense but sometimes people don't there's this kind of weird obsession with trying to figure everything out. I've kind of come to peace with the fact that I will not know the secrets of this universe. I will not know certain things that, as a civilian, I'm supposed to not know.
Starting point is 00:08:50 I won't probably find that information and it's okay. I mean, I hate being left in the dark, right? I'm not going to stress over that because I can't control it right now. What I am going to worry about is the dynamics that I have with the people around me. Can I build a good community? Am I, like, reaching out to people? Am I being a good person? Those are things that are, like, I can readily control them.
Starting point is 00:09:19 I think that the more we tend to put pressure on ourselves, to figure out other people's problems, to, you know, problem solve. even our parents' lives and just be there for everyone. We neglect ourselves, we really do. And then if you are able to give incredible advice to somebody else, but you cannot even take care of your own garden and the beautiful flowers that you have in it, it doesn't make sense.
Starting point is 00:09:46 It doesn't make sense. And I am a victim of that. I completely and utterly just will drag, myself down, I will do things that I know are not good for me because I need to be there for other people, because it's just, I need, I need to get validated that I am saving somebody or that I'm helping somebody. And that is such a selfish thing. Because if I'm not okay, why would I spend my time trying to help other people? I think there's something to be said, that's a lot of, you know, builds a lot of character if you're struggling yourself.
Starting point is 00:10:29 and you still have the time for other people, that's beautiful. But if you, time and time again, just go out of your way to try and help everyone else and nobody helps you, or you can't even help yourself, it doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense that we're able to make ourselves the recipient of so much pain. So much pain that isn't, it's not pain from growth, it's pain from suffering. It doesn't make sense that I am almost like more willing to get angry and upset than sit down and reflect and figure out why am I feeling so bad about everything. It doesn't make sense that when you try your hardest to date somebody or you try your hardest to impress friends that don't care about you, that you don't get them. but I think when you reflect and you realize that your energy is going in the wrong places,
Starting point is 00:11:39 it actually does make sense. It does. This episode is brought to you by Tell us Online Security. Oh, tax season is the worst. You mean hack season? Sorry, what? Starting point is 00:12:17 Please sit and enjoy. Please sit and sip. Play. Post. Taste. View and enjoy. Via rail. Love the way. We spend a lot of our lives.
Starting point is 00:12:35 chasing things, chasing opportunities, people, places, because we think that that will somehow broaden our horizons and give us an opportunity and for a lot of us it will. But I've met more people that wanted to escape their own prison in their minds by going somewhere, by dating somebody, by hanging out with a certain group of people who were dressed in opium style. Hey, super cool. I'm not going to lie. the fits go hard. But that didn't, that didn't solve their issues. That didn't actually help them out. That didn't make them feel actually like happy to exist. It doesn't make sense. There are a lot of things right now in my life that, you know, and I think our lives too that
Starting point is 00:13:28 don't really make sense. Life is hard now, man. I saw a graph a couple months ago where I was talking about surveys as to when are when is when are people the most unhappy in their lives what age and i don't know if you guys know this but for gen z like age 18 to 24 is like peak unhappiness it rivals that of i think like when you're in your late you know 40s or 50s when you have your midlife crisis like the the line goes like that what no No, man. For a lot of people, it doesn't make sense. Like, you're young.
Starting point is 00:14:14 You should have so many opportunities. But the world and the hand that we are adult right now, it's tough, bro. It's tough. You know, when I was younger, I really looked forward to being an adult. And, you know, I still love myself and I love this experience, no matter the challenges. But I'm going to keep it a buck. Like,
Starting point is 00:14:42 It's hard with the uncertainty of the world right now and the way in which, like, it doesn't make sense. Everyone's telling you go to college, get a job. That's great. You go to college. And then you're searching for hours and days and months in your parents' house for somebody to be like, we've decided to go with another candidate. We're really sorry. But you're very qualified. We've just decided.
Starting point is 00:15:10 You know, we're going to stop hiring right now. The gaslighting is kind of insane. And on top of it, you know, you feel lonely, you feel like you can't go on dates. And everyone around you is just like, bro, like, just go and meet somebody. When? If you're working to sustain yourself, if you're in school, when? It doesn't make sense. Don't let anybody tell you, especially that's not in our generation.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Oh, it's super easy. you just need to do X, Y, and Z. Y, and Y, and Z, y'all have no idea. And I don't mean to say that in a way of push people away. Uh-uh. Quite the opposite. We're the only ones that understand our reality right now, the affordability crisis,
Starting point is 00:15:59 the fact that it's just everything is insanely hard, and we're the ones that have to figure it out. That's the sad reality that I've had to come to conclusions with. No older generations coming to save me. it's about us now it's about us right now girl where are you going famously y'all know that song i hope you do
Starting point is 00:16:22 if you don't doesn't make sense i think that a lot of great things are happening in our generation it's just that we are being kind of delayed a little bit in the way that it's happening and i i i'm taking it upon myself of like okay well how can i think of
Starting point is 00:16:40 building experiences or places where people can meet in exchange ideas and hang out and just learn to be human because that's another thing man like we struggle with that it's not easy there's more to life than finding the perfect car but finding the perfect car can help you get the most out of life like the SUV that handles everything from drop off to off road and the car that hulls groceries and hockey teams or the van that's gone from just practical to practically family whatever you want wherever you're going start your search at autotrater.ca canada's car marketplace it's not easy a lot of this human stuff is not it's not stuff that comes in a manual there's no you know humanity for dummies like it's it's a lot of just life learning stuff and usually you would talk about these kind of problems over family dinner but now you have slot bowls and you sit at your dinner table and you sit at your dinner table and you're
Starting point is 00:17:43 your parents are on their iPad or they're showing you Facebook memes. It doesn't make sense. Dad, can you just look at my report card? Oh, did you see? Oh, I think, check this out. It's a hedgehog and he's dancing in front of a ringed doorbell. You're like, that's AI. Dad's like, what? What do you? Oh. Bro, by the way, like when the AI gets better, I'm cooked too. I'm going to be as bad as an old head. I'm not going to lie to you. I'm going to fall for so many scams. People will call me. and be like, hi, Zerk, I need $14,000.
Starting point is 00:18:19 And I'll be like, oh, yeah, you're right. Let me cash app for Venmo. You got Chase. Like, that's going to be the, we're about to get scammed, bro. It doesn't make sense. This world is falling apart. No, it's not. I like my generation, man.
Starting point is 00:18:38 I like Gen Z. Gen Z's goaded. Like, we're fire. I just don't know if we know it yet. but maybe it's because we still think we're naive and we don't know how the world works and we think that we still can't change it and that no matter what will happen we're always just going to be at the disposal of people that are older and have more influence and money yeah something you got to deal with you know welcome to the world but what I will say is that
Starting point is 00:19:16 you aren't naive. You as a young person, it's not that you're not smart enough or you don't have enough experience. I think experience is really nuanced. Somebody can be super, super, super experienced in something, but give you really terrible advice or advice that's very biased. Somebody can claim that they're super open-minded, but they just tap into a couple different podcasts and they haven't really expanded their worldview past that. In the this world, there is no black and white. There is no A and B. There are so many perspectives and there's so much gray. And I think what will help you, if you want to feel less naive about it, is just hear them all out. And then make your own. Make your own. See what the options are.
Starting point is 00:20:08 And then listen to yourself and ask yourself which one you want to do. Well, my parents are saying, I got to be an engineer and my dad is saying I got to do comps eye and then you know but what are your options what are your options what are genuinely your options if you took the the limitations off because if you just say well it's either I'm going to be a business major or you know I'm cooked it doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense that's not true well it's like no my parents they wouldn't allow me to like start my own business have you even talk to them about it have you even ask them. You're already shutting the door on things you've never tried, and I used to do that so much. I used to just not want to confront the fact that I could do more, and I could figure
Starting point is 00:20:59 something out. It's just usually when you do that. It's not glamorous. It's not easy. But oftentimes it's pretty simple. Zirky show, it's pretty simple. But just remember, in your life, if you go through something and experience, you meet somebody, and it doesn't make sense. They give you an off vibe. Just suss things out. Really see if that's, is, do you get a good gut feeling from an opportunity from something? And if you don't, get out of there. Today's episode of The Zerky Show was filmed in beautiful Cripple Creek, Colorado, with the snowy mountains behind me.
Starting point is 00:21:39 If you're ever in the United States of America, come to Colorado. It is so beautiful. Did you know that the Zerky Show is everywhere you go? That is correct. You can watch it. You can scroll it. You can stream it. The choice is yours.
Starting point is 00:21:49 If you want to tap in, these are the best ways. To tap in. Do the things that bring you joy. Have some chicken nuggets and go on your skateboard. When was the last time that you actually went out and skated, man? I, funny enough, used to have a pennyboard. That was about as much skating as I did, which I think is like, that's already kind of a stretch to call it skating. But I got it for free.
Starting point is 00:22:11 One of my middle school crushers gave it to me. Anyways, if you're trying something new, just know that I believe in you.
