This Paranormal Life - The Haunted Austrian Castle Where They Hunted Werewolves

Episode Date: September 8, 2026

When we think of ‘witch trials’ we often think of Salem and the East Coast of the USA, a dark and morbid chapter of paranormal history. But in Europe the exact same thing was taking place, only it... wasn’t just witches… Werewolf trials happened all across Europe, but as the years went by and they slowly stopped, there was one corner of Austria in which they kept going for hundreds of years. In Moosham Castle hundreds of people met their end, executed for the crimes of witchcraft and lycanthropy. That may be why people claim the castle is haunted to this very day. Time for Rory Powers and Kit Grier Mulvenna to investigate! Get your tickets to our London Live Show! Starting point is 00:00:00 Haunted medieval castles with their ancient bloody histories can be some of the most paranormal locations on Earth. That's why we've investigated many here on this paranormal life over the years. And high in the Austrian Alps, thousands of feet above civilization, lies one of the world's most haunted castles. Between bloody battles, cryptids and witch trials, Moosham Castle in Austria makes others look like the F***le Tubby's house. But what is it about this location that makes it so paranormal? Are haunted castles dangerous in 2026 or just creepy a F? And should I install a moat at my house to defend against the TV license man?
Starting point is 00:00:44 Answers to these questions and more on this episode of This Paranormal Life! Hello and welcome back to This Paranormal Life, the weekly comedy podcast where every Tuesday we investigate a different paranormal case. And we decide whether we think it's real or not. Rory, how are you doing today? Did you know that the house of the telitubbies is called the tubbitronic Superdome? Actually, I didn't until you told me that.
Starting point is 00:01:11 But that's an amazing fact, isn't it? Which sounds like the finals of some sort of telitubby American football league. You'd perform at the Tubbytronic Superdome. Right. New news is doing the halftime show at the tubbytronic Superdome. Okay, so today we're dealing with a haunted castle. Haunted castle, no tinky winky. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:01:31 I'm going to move on from Tallyw's references. That's right. Roy, we've always loved covering medieval castles, I feel like. And we would know a thing or two, Rory, having been schooled in a haunted castle. Yes, we've talked about it on the podcast before, but Kit and I, both are, our secondary school, was a place called Dominican College. And it was an old nunnery built onto a cliffside that looks out over the town, sort of like a medieval castle. This sounds like we're doing a bit, but this is a real school, I promise you. I mean, we're saying that our high school was haunted.
Starting point is 00:02:04 The scariest thing that ever happened to me was realizing I was going to fail all of my GCSEs. The principal said, Rory, you're basically a ghost because you have no future. Guys, we are going to get stuck straight into this spooky haunted castle case right after a quick reminder that you got ahead over to this paranormal life.com to consider supporting the show and getting a bunch of stuff in return by becoming a member of the This Paranormal Life Commune. Now, to anyone who's just joining us, the This Paranormal Life Commune is a real place. It's not a cult, but it's great.
Starting point is 00:02:35 It's fantastic. It's broken up into several districts, and you can kind of, it's like a video game. You kind of start off in one district, and there's not really any running water or stuff. But then you can make your way up the districts, you know, in a kind of meritocracy. It's kind of beautiful.
Starting point is 00:02:49 They're labeled alphabetically, so we have District C, District U, District L, and District T. And sort of, yeah, you can kind of choose where you want to live within that structure. So if you want to join that community at the commune, head over to this paranormal life.com. Where for as little as five bucks a month or your local currency, you can get access to hundreds and hundreds of bonus episodes weekly behind the scenes after party episodes recorded by me and Roy. Sometimes you're shooting the shit right here with the sofa here at TPL HQ. We've got giveaways, newsletters, the whole lot. this paranormal life.com. Those people also got first dibs on live show tickets too. So remember,

Rory, our story begins journeying high up in the Austrian Alps where the air is thin and the shnaps run cold. You're actually weirdly familiar with the Alps. Have you ever seen anything f*** up there by chance?
Starting point is 00:04:27 No. Except the back of my own head when I went down a black slope for the first time and briefly saw God. Right. Your soul started to leave your physical form. I think I've only been in the Alps to go snowboarding before. Right. And I don't spend a lot of time kind of looking around, admiring the scenery, as much as I spend the time figuring out which French kids. I'm going to use as a break.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Oh my God. Learn to snowboard. You're a hazard to everyone around you. They're indestructible. They're fine. Kids are low-key indestructible. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:08 So just find the nearest ski school, go straight into it. Yeah. It's like when little kids come up to me at the skate park and they'll be like, hey, unc, do a 360 flip? And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:05:19 do you think 34-year-olds can be 360 flipping in this economy? Yeah. Have you seen the Bank of England and? rest rates? No, I don't think so. I don't think we can afford to be doing that. They wouldn't understand. They're made of rubber. Yeah, they probably do one first try. They, they hit the ground.
Starting point is 00:05:33 They just bounced right off the concrete. They're made of rubber. The other day, I took a particularly hard fall off my skateboard and a small amount of poo came out. So, I have to wear nappies now when I go skateboarding. You got to think of a good comeback next time, next time they try and like make funny you for being old, you know? I would say something like, oh, you want me to do a 360? I bet you wish your dad did a 180 when he left. Oh! Little bitch! Stuck it! No, sorry, I didn't mean to...
Starting point is 00:06:01 And then I snowboarded into that French kid. Boom! Oh, a little French spine hates to see Rory coming. Hades to see Rory coming. Let's get into it. It's 1840. Two local hunters are making their way
Starting point is 00:06:18 through the woods near the small town of Unternberg. In the Austrian state of Salzburg. It's getting... cold and windy as they climb the alpine foothills after hiking all day. Johann, maybe we should turn back. The weather's turning and it will be dark soon. No, no. We'll find shelter up in the tree line.
Starting point is 00:06:38 I'm sure of it. But the blizzard kept increasing as they climbed higher into the dark forest until... Johan! My God, what's that? Ah, yes. I'd almost forgotten it was here. It's been so long. That you said.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Joseph is Musham Castle. Musham? Yes, that's what I said. Musham Castle. It's been abandoned for 50 years or more. Look at it. Godless, claimed by nature and its elements. Completely overgrown, ominous and terrifying.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Yes, we should set up camp and stay the night here. Yohan, no! Despite Yosef's protest, the pair looped up the Warren track and headed towards the abandoned. Portress. Perched on a jagged rock, Musham Castle sits at over 3,000 feet above sea level. Inside a misty forest and made up of pointed spires, battlements and elevated walkways. It looks f***ing awesome. Yeah, it sounds sick.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Let's pull up some picks. Mr. Phil, could you please pull up the first piece of picture evidence in today's case? Wow, this really is in the thick of it. Deep in the forest, deep in the mountains it looks like. That's a huge castle. That's some Dominican college shit right there. You're low-key. Hashtag Veritas.
Starting point is 00:08:01 I can almost see a little boy failing his GCSEs in the window. Yep, the top tower there. That's what I'd throw myself from when I failed H.E. class. Absolutely. When I failed to make spaghetti bolliganese for my GCSEs for some reason. I couldn't make chocolate milk. So I decided to end my own life. And I'd like to say things have improved, but you know what?
Starting point is 00:08:24 I literally Googled this weekend, how to make cucumber water. I'm not joking. See, most of us are, low-key insecure now about how to make cucumber water. Now you're talking about it. So what we do? That is why I did it, because I was like, listen, I am 99% sure that the ingredients are cucumber and water. Turns out I was right. But there's some techniques involved. Well, yeah, because do you, because a lime, you got to like squeeze it a little bit. But the cucumber, you just put it in. There's some spoon smoohing that goes in that they say will help accentuate the flavors of the cucumber. People also suggest little squeeze of lemon or lime to give it a little zes-be-kind of midlife crisis you're going through your drinking cucumber water. What the
Starting point is 00:09:05 where is this coming from? Mr. Moulster Energy. Guys, you know there's like Gatorade in that mug by the way. There is. There actually is. There is. There's not coffee and smoke. This is just straight up Gatorade. How many pints did you drink this weekend that you're drinking your ass is looking up how to make cucumber water. I don't deserve to be put on blasts like this, all right? This is like Charlie Sheen asking for gardening tips. You know, you've built a brand around a different thing. You don't get to switch it up.
Starting point is 00:09:37 Yeah, it's like, are there any signs that Rory went through a breakup recently? Oh, well, he's been living like he runs a hotel currently making lobby water on his weekends. Oh, geez. Prayers up. Okay. I believe we have some more photos, please, Phil, if you wouldn't mind. Ooh, ah, a different angle. We might have won more.
Starting point is 00:10:03 See, I like this because look at those crazy walkways. Jesus Christ. This is where, can you imagine if you're on your like Lego last shit? Sorry for anyone not watching. I'm like pretending to shoot arrows. Yeah, for people listening to the podcast, this is like more than a castle. This is like a settlement. This is like a, it looks like a village on the interior.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Like hundreds of people could live here. Can you imagine the lute concert you could put on in that courtyard? People just pop in and lock into the medieval lute music. Oh, I thought you meant loot, like L-O-O-T. Because that's what I'm going to do if I find this place in the woods. Yeah, you know there's ancient treasures in here. Yeah, this is, this is straight out of oblivion or sky rim. But as Johann mentioned, the castle had long been a bit of.
Starting point is 00:10:50 abandoned by the early 1800s. But why? All they knew was by the time they were entering, it was a shell of a once mighty structure. Up here, Joseph, an opening. I think we can get into the courtyard this way. Oh God, Johann, did you hear that? It could be wolves or worse.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Verse? Oh, not this again. I told you, that's just an old folk tale to make children. afraid of pedos. There's no such thing as a verval. Oh my God, what is that? Right there in the old castle courtyard was a huge puddle of blood. The blood trailed off to one end of the courtyard where the hunters could see the mutilated corpse of a deer. Whoa, this was clearly not the work of a bear, a wolf, or even our FK Jr. In fact, Yosef was convinced he knew exactly what had killed the poor creature
Starting point is 00:11:50 A verwolf Hmm Alright well what are the tale Translation sorry Werewolf of course What are the telltale signs of that The way it's been killed or mauled or I don't even know bro
Starting point is 00:12:03 Okay But they knew But they knew that Because they're like They lived in the 1800s or whatever Sure I mean what would the What would the tells be
Starting point is 00:12:14 I guess Sometimes we see on this paranormal life If like a creature is just like ripped to bits, ripped to ribbons, like a car, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, UFO culture. Yeah. It's kind of like, well, a wolf wouldn't just take this thing down and then leave it there. Yes.
Starting point is 00:12:33 For starters. Yeah. I think the word you're looking for, Kit, is coincidentally, the, the name of my first punk rock album that I released when I was 14 years old, kill for the thrill. Okay. Yes. So what you're looking at right now is a creature that has killed for the Thrill. Tell us more about the album. The sales were poor.
Starting point is 00:12:55 It really, first week sales, mom, dad, sis. Really dropped off after week one, to be honest with you. Ants and uncles were a tough sell. We found it hard to break into the American market. My aunts and uncles living in Georgia weren't really that into it. Yeah, it was a hard sell in that household. Yeah. But it's still out there somewhere. Roy Powers, kill for the thrill. I was thinking about this the other day. Did you have come to Jesus? moment where you discovered rock? Because I remember mine very well. What was yours? We were staying in like a family hall. I was staying like my aunt and uncle's place and I had been given like some little like
Starting point is 00:13:29 Dobby cupboards with a air mattress to sleep in. But I had a CD player. Yeah. And my parents, I guess, had bought me ACDC back in black. And I was like, you know, and you just hit play on that just the high hat. My life was about to change. Just that first chord. I'm just like, I'm like, like, freaking out, like someone in an anime who's just been punched,
Starting point is 00:13:59 who's like, I'm just losing it. Freaking, it just, you've never heard sounds like that before in your life. You'd like kill for the thrill. You would honestly. It was a little before it's time. Yeah. I made it in a weekend on Garage Band. I only had access to the only instrument.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I knew how to play the time was the tin whistle. Oh shit, bro. So I had a tin whistle and a keyboard. I didn't know how to get the keyboard out of DJ mode. Yeah. So it's sort of like sick riffs on the tin whistle. It almost came like, it almost came like full circle around.
Starting point is 00:14:39 It was almost like a Wutan clan song. Right. The way it was like beats with like flute. Come on. Yeah. I'm going on the tin whistle. like crazy. Kill for the thrill wasn't music for the ears.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Right. It was my one review that I got from my uncle. Which, you know, was harsh but fair. I think they say that about a lot of people. Like, didn't people hate Beethoven at the start? That's why they killed him. They gave the electric chair. For the thrill.
Starting point is 00:15:12 That's what happened to you if people weren't with your latest album back in the day. They just executed you. Nah, we ain't fucking with this one, dog. That's right, guys. We're dealing with a vervulf, a werewolf. This isn't the first time we have talked about werewolves on this paranormal life. That being said, they don't come up that often. Yeah, I think we've covered a few different versions of them, but it's a rarer cryptid than you think.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Yeah. To have a lot of famous stories about it. And as it happens, this corpse was just one of a number of animals found in and around the castle grounds. in recent weeks. Everything from deer to livestock had been recovered and the locals were very much on edge. There was unfortunately a precedent too. You see, around 100 years before these events in 1715, there was a very well documented werewolf panic, where after a series of similarly mutilated animals had been found, the castle itself was host to a werewolf trial. The trial is thought to be one of the, quote,
Starting point is 00:16:21 last legally recorded werewolf prosecutions in history. I like how ominous that is. We aren't even going to talk about the illegal werewolf trials. Yeah. Which is slightly worrying. Now, these trials ended with two local teenagers confessing. They claimed that they had used a Svartz Svalb, a black ointment, to shape shift into a werewolf form.
Starting point is 00:16:47 terrorized the area. Had they admitted to the crime under torture? Absolutely. But nevertheless, werewolf folklore clearly remained embedded in this area. And in fact, something paranormal really might have happened in this part of the world because even though werewolf trials gradually stopped around most of the world and most of Europe. Because we got them all. Yeah, probably. They kept going in Austria, specifically in the states of Corinthia and Styria in the southern mountainous regions. A lot of werewolves. And they kept going and kept going for almost 200 years longer than the rest of Europe. Sounds like they had a werewolf problem. Yeah, that's exactly what it sounds like. I like the idea of an illegal werewolf trial being almost like an illegal rave
Starting point is 00:17:37 that you just get a word that it's like, hey, I heard it's happening down on this warehouse. We caught a couple of them. We're going to do it this weekend. Totally. Put some werewolves on trial. Yeah. Although, how do you put a, how do you put a werewolf on trial? Because presumably you're, in the court is the human. Yeah. And I don't know a lot about werewolves, but isn't it sort of like the incredible Hulk? Like, they're two distinct individual things. A human becomes a werewolf. But then after the process is done, the human's like, I have no idea what I did. I'm really sorry. That's a great point. I ate a little boy. Dude, that's not a. on. I'm on. I'm with you guys. I belong down there. We should lock him up. We should put the wolf on trial. Yeah. You know, who is he? Imagine that being such a bad liar. He's like, you ate a boy. What? Whoa. Whoa. Sorry. Oh, I just woke up. Um, hold on. Let me clean out me here a second. A boy? And you're saying it was me? Let me just clean out my big bad ears for a second. they're all the better to hear you guys with.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Sorry, what did you say that I did? They're like, we saw you. You were in guy form when you ate him. Oh, no, my wolf form and guy form are like indistinguishable. Like, I just get hairy knuckles. It's pretty close. It's like, may I approach the bench? Judge, you smell great, by the way.
Starting point is 00:19:07 He's in chains. May I approach the bench? No. Not again. You ate the last. Judge. Yes, you are getting to a good point, Rory, which is you're referring to the sometimes scene depiction.
Starting point is 00:19:22 You're a furry. Of what? What did you say to me? You're a furry. No one said anything, actually. I was talking about the case. What did you say you're a furry? Oh, you said you're referring.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Sorry. Got a little defensive there. I thought you called me. Did you hear that too? I thought he called me a furry. No, I didn't call you a furry. You said, you're referring. You're referring.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Don't point. Don't make accurate. What I do, what I do outside of this podcast is my own business. Is my own business and it's private. So you do? So you are referring? I'm kind of a werewolf.
Starting point is 00:19:55 I transform on the weekends. The weekend. At Comic-Conn's. Yeah. Because you said you were busy at the weekend. Hanging over with a couple friends or. But you got to make so much cucumber water. Dehydrated.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Yeah. The suits are really hot. You get dehydrated. rated if you know what I'm saying. Yes, you are refaring to the conception of, you know, werewolf as being a kind of Jekyll and Hyde situation, a incredible Hulk situation that one may not have control over their transformation. And that is certainly seen in media that even for werewolves,
Starting point is 00:20:35 you know, they're just minding their own business, working as a classroom assistant in a primary school for children. And then, uh-oh, for some reason there's a full moon during the day. They turn into a ravenous beast, eat all the children. They had no choice over that. But it's a great point because I believe back in the day, and you'll see this with the trials, there was more of a, the historical conception was more that these guys had made packs with the devil.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Yeah. It was more closely tied to witchcraft, really. Yeah, the modern pop culture depiction of a werewolf is very different from the old school were a lot of the times I think as you said it's either packs with the devil it's witchcraft and more often than not the individual is kind of on board and remembers what they're doing
Starting point is 00:21:20 yeah so it's more of a Dexter style serial killer you know back in the day who's someone who's trying to keep their identity under wraps if anything they'd be gutted to hear about modern day werewolves because they're like why didn't I think of that I should have said that the wolf is a different person
Starting point is 00:21:37 they could just say don't know yeah Don't know what happened. It's like, why did you eat that village? What? I hate the village. We're all trying to find the guy who ate the village. We're all doing it. Interestingly, Wikipedia actually has a section from a book,
Starting point is 00:21:53 which documents the results from six of some of the last recorded werewolf trials in Austria. So they have it written down, which is good. They weren't just having a laugh and executing people. You have the 1701 trial. of now Rory, let's play a little game of Spot the Wolf, okay? The 1701 trial of Mr. Paul Perwolf. All right, he didn't stand a chance. Get this from Wolfsburg, Obdow.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Dead man walking. Jesus Christ. That is at the very least unfortunate naming. Like he was never going to be found innocent with that name. And he wasn't, he was executed in 1701. Paul Perwulf from Wolfsburg. That's like a guy. on trial called armed
Starting point is 00:22:41 robbery. Just lock him away. Gerald Bodley Harm. Mr. Gerald Bodily Arm. There was the 1705 trial of someone just called Vlastel. The verdict unknown. The 1705 and 1706 trial
Starting point is 00:23:01 of six beggars from Wolfsburg all executed. This... Do they really think if there were were were wolves, they would all be living in a place called Wolfsburg? You don't think they'd be a little bit more inconspicuous? Yeah, at a certain point, just make a wall, build the wall around Wolfsburg.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Yeah, just isolate it. Just let them hang out with each other. 1707, three shepherds from Freinstein. One was lynched and two were, quote, probably executed. Well, that's a perfect disguise as well. If you want to convince people that you're not a wolf, be a shepherd. Yes. Because that is, what is a wolf in sheep's clothing?
Starting point is 00:23:46 Dude, also, what is a shepherd doing with a wolf? A wolf is a shepherd's worst enemy, all right? It didn't work, though. Oh, you're. There was, of course, quite late on 1718, Jacob Kranavitter, a quote, mentally disabled beggar in Rotten Fell. Well, that's just sad. Who was, thankfully, only beaten.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Oh, that's nice. That more or less wraps up the kind of latter end of the werewolf trials. And Rory, you know, we actually did cover, I think, what is sometimes known as allegedly the last werewolf trial, which is a good name for a movie. I don't know if you remember this, but it was the trial of Peter Stump. Yeah, I do remember this one, which, to be fair, you know, he wasn't just from Wolfsburg. I think there were some pretty strange things that he was up to. Yeah, he seemed to be a bastard man. Yeah, yeah, I don't think he was a great guy.
Starting point is 00:24:41 So I'm not saying he deserved to be killed in a werewolf trial, but, you know, if anyone was a werewolf, it probably was Peter Stump. Yeah, I think I don't really remember those fine details, but I think it was a case of like, yeah, that was like, well, he did something. You know, it's like, I think he actually, if anything, was such a beast of a man. They were like, well, he must be a werewolf. and that was probably giving him too much credit.
Starting point is 00:25:08 I think he was just a serial killer. Yeah, or something. Probably. And he had a very brutal end. Phil, let's pull up a piece of evidence. This is an artist's impression of the trial of Peter Stump, which isn't even in a court from what we can see. It's just, yeah, I think this is like,
Starting point is 00:25:28 kind of like in a church you have the stations of the cross where they depict all the steps of what happened to Jesus. Oh, I see. I assume. don't know though. This kind of seems as though it might be rather than multiple people movies like all the stuff they did to Peter Stump, which I think is kids cover your ears. I think he was skinned alive, burned, beaten. I think they used the phrase broken on a wheel. They did strap him to a wheel and then beat the crap out of him. And then eventually...
Starting point is 00:25:56 They're just trying new stuff. And like there is a lot of crazy stuff happening because there's a there's a pike with, I think, his head on it. And then a dog, standing on a platform on the pike, it's weird. That is really brutal. That was like a family day out in the 1700s. At least if you're skinned alive, I feel like no more of the steps are X done alive.
Starting point is 00:26:21 Do you think, though? Yeah. I think, I don't know. Yeah. It's gnarly though. But look, here, we do have a bit more, well, I can't say evidence, but artist's interpretations,
Starting point is 00:26:33 because I'm very aware that at this point We are talking. We all have that kind of pop culture idea of what werewolves look like in our heads. But let's get some artist interpretations to give us more of a sense of what we're dealing with here. Phil, if you could please pull up some artist interpretations of werewolves. Show me the wolf. So just really kind of powerful, gnarly, scary beast. This one straight out of deviant art. We're talking beefcake abs, jacked old arms.
Starting point is 00:27:03 He's got those bolder shoulders. Yeah. This is a beast of a werewolf. He is quite powerful. Phil, do we have another one? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, really something.
Starting point is 00:27:13 I could have seen this coming a mile off. They're only getting sexier, guys. This one's in a speedo for some reason. Sorry, sexier. I don't really... I think that says more about you than it doesn't about me. It's just a werewolf. That's in a speedo, in a tight red speedo.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Oh, I didn't even notice he was... I suppose now you mention it he is wearing a... He has quite a lot packed into those. into those things. No, we don't need to zoom, Phil. Yeah, Phil, zoom in. Can we, can we enhance, computer enhance, speedo? We don't need to do that.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Computer enhanced jigglyness by 25%. Oh, he's got veins! Well, he's a powerful vampire. I don't want to see this. Sorry, Weirwolf. Sorry, I'm a tiz. All right, I do think we might have one more. Well, now I'm back in, brother.
Starting point is 00:27:55 All right. This is a kind of rarer variant of the werewolf, and we will have to censor this, of course, for our younger viewers. How can I say? I think this is a type of werewolf. It's a woman. Crossed with a kind of big booty Latina. Yeah, kind of situation.
Starting point is 00:28:12 But hopefully the image is branded 18 plus just to keep us on the right side of things. Disappointingly. I think we just lost all our sponsorship for the month. Oh, there's a real one. Well, yeah. I mean, it's a bit less interesting, really, isn't it? But yes, that is a more accurate, probably, depiction of a werewolf, which is just a kind of nasty. it's just a slightly more humanoid wolf really
Starting point is 00:28:34 yeah can we go back Phil just go back to that last image for a second just oh yeah yeah okay this is important it's nice that she got her hair done isn't it I think that's natural you think she has a kind of blow dry flick part of the transformation yeah and where is this one
Starting point is 00:28:49 and where is this one found just so I know to just straight off flip away from it just where specifically is this where wolf found and what attracts the beast what lures the beast is this one in Austria? Does Roy have to book a flight to Austria?
Starting point is 00:29:05 What do I need to find this creature? For anyone not watching, this werewolf is, quote, looking back on it. This is a sexy werewolf. All right. Oh, we've got to stay away from that one. Yeah, we've got to put them on trial, being a naughty little minx. All right. In Toronto, every arrival is a statement, and nothing says it better than this.

So look, one reason why werewolves are fun to investigate is because they're a bit of a kind of paranormal catch-all in this type of story. Either they're real and you have an insane real-life paranormal creature on your hands,
Starting point is 00:30:22 or you wrongfully murdered hundreds of people and their ghosts are going to haunt your castle forever. True, yeah. And haunted forever. wherever the castle is. To this day, countless visitors to Musham Castle report experiencing phantom noises. They feel touches from entities when no one's standing nearby, and they feel extremely bad ominous presences when they're in hotspots like the castle's dungeons. And I really can't stress enough how much this place should be haunted.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Because while the werewolf trials are a really unique thing about this area, you'll best believe they were trialling witches too. Like if Musham Castle was a McDonald's with menu items, the werewolf trials were like the McFlurry, like a fun, nice to have, interesting item. But the witch trials are the burgers. Really? The main order of business is burger trials. Oh, okay. I guess maybe back in that, at that time, there were more witches than werewolves.
Starting point is 00:31:24 Yes. Yeah. Because a lot of that old-timey misogyny as well, they were like, we do want to hunt werewolves, but a lot of those are guys. I was like, we could just drown women. No problem. Carl is a werewolf, but we also play poker on Thursdays. He's really good at catching witches.
Starting point is 00:31:40 So let's use the werewolves to catch most of the witches and then we can kill some of the werewolves. This all makes so much sense. This is crazy. Yeah, the witch trials are really handy for when if you didn't like your wife anymore and the church wouldn't allow you to get divorced, you could just say she was a witch. the werewolf trial is not as useful kind of that way. Yeah, unfortunately, if you were a woman who wanted to divorce her husband
Starting point is 00:32:05 and said that he was a werewolf, the village would say, that's something that a witch would say. Yeah, your eyes aren't working. Maybe they're not working because of all the spells you've been doing. You're telling me, you turned your husband into a werewolf, you witch? I'm like, so he is a werewolf also, though? During one of the most famous witch trials at Moosham Castle, a local woman and her partner were put on trial for sorcery.
Starting point is 00:32:30 During the interrogation, the woman claimed that her own son, 20-year-old Paul Jacob Collar, had made a pact with Satan and he was the source of the witchcraft. And so the authorities launched a manhunt to find, quote, wizard jackal, as they were now calling him. Also, magician jackal, or simply the jackal. But unfortunately for them, he was always two steps ahead, and they only managed to capture one of his mates.
Starting point is 00:32:57 But when they interrogated him, he said bad news, you'll never stop him. Jack has an entire gang of street kids he's been teaching black magic to. Jackal is basically the Joker. Kill one of us and ten more will take our place. What is happening? So the city panicked. The authorities basically swept the streets for anyone who looks slightly edgy. Emo Fringe, get in the van.
Starting point is 00:33:22 Chain wallet, get in the van. And although it sounds like just a moral panic, allegedly everyone they rounded up just backed up the claims about the jackal. Some said he was able to turn himself invisible. Others say he could enchant mice and rats, which would ruin the harvest of the farmers. Damn.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Yet the city was never able to capture the jackal. So the authorities did the next best thing and executed 139 people. Most of those trials and executions took place in the walls of Moosham Castle. Oh my God. This is insane. Which will very quickly address.
Starting point is 00:33:56 Musham Castle also way too fun of a word for this dark of it history. Yeah. Mushim Castle reminds me too much of the Mushroom Kingdom. And you just know these were terrible deaths. We're talking set on fire, pulled apart by horses, being made to watch Ricky Jervais's new comedy special. So as I said, Roy, this is a double whammy. You have an evil castle hunted by werewolf ghosts and wizard ghosts and witch ghosts. And even if you don't believe these people were werewolves or witches, they still died horrible deaths.
Starting point is 00:34:29 And crucially, people are experiencing the paranormal effects. What happened to the jackal? He called Lai, seems like. This is such a weird character to throw in halfway through this story. A wizard who trained a bunch of children to be able to do magic? And then they killed all the children. I'll keep it really real with you. It says a lot for the trials if they never managed to find or prove there even was a head wizard.
Starting point is 00:35:01 Right. And they just round up all the followers of the wizard and murder them. Yeah. It's like great. All right. So the one guy who might have deserved some punishment, he borderline doesn't exist. Well, he can turn invisible too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:17 Exactly. We could have them trapped in the castle. We wouldn't even know. But let's just kill 100. 140 people just for good measure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I don't want to give away
Starting point is 00:35:28 whether the wizards and witches were really real. Almost all the wizards and witches and werewolves were homeless people. You know, they were people who weren't really able to defend themselves. But what matters is, Rory, people feel as if they're being watched
Starting point is 00:35:47 in this place, touched, especially in the torture chambers, being breathed on. Strange white mists, shadowy figures are being seen in corridors, disembodied voices heard during EVP sessions. There also claims people hearing footsteps. But when you turn around, no one's there. Banging noises heard in the walls, guys,
Starting point is 00:36:07 this is just classic poltergeist haunted castle activity. Yeah, I mean, it's got enough history to have earned that title. This might be the most amount of deaths we've ever covered recorded inside of one establishment. Yeah. And we went to a haunted Burger King in Puerto Rico. That was close, but this is setting records. You know, this reminds me of, you know, when people say, like, if I was rich, I would be so unproblematic. You know, rich people are always out here making trouble for themselves.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Oh, yeah. You're trying to rule the world. It's like, if I won the lottery, I'd be gone. You never hear from me again. Bye, bye, mom and dad. I'm the jackal. disappear. I would be the jackal. I'd be gone. Like, it's crazy that in that all these like medieval castles were the richest people in the land lived. Why weren't they just kicking back?
Starting point is 00:37:03 Eating popcorn on a 55 inch LED television. Well, they, they were rounding up peasants to execute them. Dude, that's the problem. Just live your life, bro. That was television in the 1700s. If you had all the money in the world, an enormous castle, you'd be so bored. Once you don't need to hunt anymore, you have all the food. You have the best jesters in the land, dancing and juggling in front of you. At a certain point, you're just like, oh, just kill some witches. Get a bunch of people in. I want to like time to a wheel and smash them with a bat.
Starting point is 00:37:35 I'm so bored. And there's like so much mold in the castle walls. You've gone mad like J.K. Rowling. And you're just, you've gone crazy. Yeah, you're like, I've already eaten like three ducks today. Yeah. I've spent all morning jacking it to the. the hottest tapestries I can find.
Starting point is 00:37:53 I'm so bored. I'm so bored. Let's just kill a peasant. Bring a peasant in here. We'll say he did something. I'm just going to cut off his arms. Yeah. Season three of Breaking Bad was shooting the floor,
Starting point is 00:38:07 so peasants have to dance. That was, your cruelty was TV to them. You know? Bard, Bard, get over here. What do you have for me today? What is this?
Starting point is 00:38:18 It's called the Folly of Elderwood. I've heard this one before. I've heard this a thousand times the Folly of Elder Wood. You've got to write something new, man. Folly of Elder Wood too, you say. I'm listening. They're writing sequels. They have all the same issues with storytelling that we do with modern Hollywood. It's all reboot sequels. The bards are totally out of ideas. So what do you have for me? Well, this is the fifth edition of a man who owns an island where dinosaurs get loose. Oh, fuck off. Get out of here. If you actually read to the end of the Bayou
Starting point is 00:38:52 Tapestry, it says Chris Evans will return in 1067. Yeah, there's tapestry like post-credit scenes. If you read to the end. At the very end of the Battle of Hastings, Samuel Jackson
Starting point is 00:39:12 turned up. I was like, I'm putting together a team of elite soldiers. And for some reason, Robert Downey Jr. again. And look, there are many more stories associated with this place. Individuals who were super specific witches or werewolves or magicians or beasts who were tried and murdered inside this place. We know it has a gruesome history. But admittedly, look, werewolves, witchcraft and some of these cases all kind of fit pretty neatly into the world of legend and
Starting point is 00:39:47 folklore and tradition. So do we have anything in the way of modern evidence. If we're saying that there's all this ghostly happenings happening in Musham Castle, do we have anything concrete? Well, we do have some peers in the paranormal investigation industry who have looked into this specific place already. The Jackal. That's right, we got his Gmail. It was easy to find the jackal at hotmail.com. Renowned British psychic and medium, Patrick McNamara visited Musham in 2014.
Starting point is 00:40:20 He did it for a TV show called Ghost Circle, I believe, and the results were pretty interesting. They claim to have made contact with spirits. According to the episode description, Patrick and his team, quote, captured some amazing EVPs, electronic voice phenomenons, spirit raps. Yo, hold up. Spirit raps? Like, because it could be they mean rapping on a door, knock, knock, knock, or... We know what they mean. brother we know what you turn on that voice recorder you turn I'm grabbing one right
Starting point is 00:40:55 now you turn on the recorder it's like there's someone in the room with us please make yourself known oh yeah and just a silence and then you're play that tape though is that two drums on that so hold up ghost beats does sound like ghost beats will the jackal is most of my name we can do this we can do ghost rap right here. We haven't done freestyle in a while. Yeah. Yo, they call me the jekyll. I live in Mushab Castle where I spend most of my day. Some guys tried to take me your way. I'm sorry to take the beat. Musham Castle. Go fuck your asshole. Motherfucking bitch, bitch, bitch of shit. Motherf fucking die. Oh, yo, yo, chill, chill, chill, chill, chill,
Starting point is 00:41:46 chill, chill, chill, sorry. I think I came in a little hard there. Did you say, uh, Musham Castle, fission, asshole? What'd you have to beep, hold. I'm really sorry. I think, um... I think you turned into a werewolf momentarily. Those are actually some of the lyrics from Kill for the Thrill. Oh, I brought back so... All we need is a... Yeah, I took the rap a little too far.
Starting point is 00:42:17 Tin Whistle solo? Okay, you know, we can use our imaginations. Yeah. Sorry, we got way too excited when they said spirit raps, but they had spirit wraps and knocks in the most haunted areas of the castle. Go f*** yeah, asshole. Musham Castle. It's so awesome.
Starting point is 00:42:45 That's so sick. Look, I have tried to track down the full episode of this investigation into Mushab Castle. I can't find it. It's too long ago. I think it is a DVD. It probably is somewhere. But we do have a trailer for that episode and like all good trailers,
Starting point is 00:43:04 it gives away the whole thing, including the investigation and evidence. So why don't we check out a little bit of that? By the way, guys, reminder, you can watch This Paranormal Life on Spotify, on YouTube, and at this paranormal life.com using the Patreon app. Check it out, become a member there. Or just hang out on YouTube and Spotify
Starting point is 00:43:25 and leave a comment if you're enjoying this episode. Let's check out without footage now. Top of all the horses and they had one that was very, very important, but it broke its leg. There was one famous horse, yeah, on the Rennbahn, you know, he was a racing horse. I feel the presence of three very evil men and one very evil woman here. Okay. There are no spirits of people that have been tortured here.
Starting point is 00:43:47 People who tortured people, they're here. Ah. They were just waiting for that trapdoor to open and my boss. I'm going to be tortured, I'm going to murder. somebody suspended about this height, there's a hanging from the ceiling. I don't like this guy already. There's always a weird old guy, isn't there? He looks like he's looking for the Ark of the Covenant in Indiana Jones.
Starting point is 00:44:10 He looks like he steals artifacts for the British Museum. Oh, here we go, EVP's capture. The ghost did just swear. The ghost said, fuck it. So it's, the video is cutting too now. Is that a different guy? I think so. He was one of the investigators.
Starting point is 00:44:37 Why is he dressed like an old-timey pirate? There was someone being pushed. They're really rattling through stuff here. Apparently the ghost said, you die. It was a very interesting experience, I have to say. First of all, I felt very safe being with Patrick. See the spirit energy here. No, I feel it.
Starting point is 00:44:59 No, you feel it? It's warm and bumpy. It's warm and bumpy. That's the spirit. And it was very strange. I was a bit scared. usually at the beginning but then I felt very comfortable with it. I think the most impressive thing to me was to actually feel this person's.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Sitting warm on, warm on. And I was able to touch a person. Now it's like my hand is bumping into that thing. Yes. Yeah, it was such a good experience and I was able to see faces. Face scurdy up. My fingers are in somebody's eyes. She's putting her fingers in someone's eyes.
Starting point is 00:45:38 It's the most beautiful thing that could have happened that we could relieve a person. Help them into the light, into the next great phase, great spirit. The person is free now. I don't know why I just... The editing in this video is crazy. I hope it keeps within myself that sort of happiness I feel now. And I'm very thankful that I was there and could have this experience and share this experience. with you and with this person
Starting point is 00:46:08 it's edited like a brain rot TikTok it's so fast but that background music does sound like the frolic of elder wood whatever the hell I called that song earlier I mean they really experienced the kitchen sink of paranormal stuff allegedly they're claiming that the ghost said
Starting point is 00:46:28 fuck it that they said you said you die hopefully not really close back to back, you know, just fuck it, you die. Yeah. They just have had enough. Well, if the woman's right and she's just putting her fingers in the guy's eyes, then I'd be pissed off too. Yeah. I'd be like, oh, screw a ghost powers. I'm going to take your soul.
Starting point is 00:46:52 Yeah, I mean, that stuff of like touching an entity is pretty advanced. Like, I think normally we're excited if someone says, oh, I feel like I've been touched, but to be getting hansy with a ghost, you know? Hey, we saw it a few weeks ago in our investigation. into the skull hole. Hand, will you touch me? It happened during a sound. Kit's favorite paranormal investigator of all time.
Starting point is 00:47:15 Yeah, it's not... Said that he himself was touched by a ghost. That case isn't building super well if it has parallels with this case. I will say. But look, it's really hard, isn't it? Like, where does your head go with one of these cases,
Starting point is 00:47:30 with an ancient castle where we have, you know, to its credit, both visitors and tourists who are, let's say, incentivized to have a spooky experience. They're trying to create a spooky atmosphere. It's good for the TripAdvisor reviews if people do experience mad shit.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Oh, yeah. You know, we've been on the ghost tours in Edinburgh. But you've got that. But then you also allegedly have paranormal investigators experiencing stuff. Yeah, I don't know. Where does your head go? This is why you need us, guys.
Starting point is 00:47:58 This is why you listen to this paranormal life. Because at the end of the episode, we don't get paid to say yes. It doesn't make a goddamn bit of difference to us whether or not we say yes or no at the end of the podcast. Because we're on unemployment benefits. We don't get paid to do anything. So the problem is with paranormal TV shows is if something doesn't happen in the TV show, they don't have an episode of a TV show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:23 That's why most ghost hunting shows gets results, gets some evidence. Here's a strange noise because they can't walk away empty handed. Yeah. Like we so often do on this podcast. Yeah. And that's why we've never been on TV. Yes. Because, you know, if you're making a TV show about Musham Castle, you're like, huh, do we get Rory and Kit who, who, you know, both went to school and the crazy school and passed their exams, technically, or do we get a man with an eccentric hat who was recently released from a mental asylum? We do that. We do the latter. Because that guy will
Starting point is 00:49:03 say anything. He will literally say anything. Now, he won't say Musham Castle, fuck your asshole. But he will lie and make up stuff. Maybe, maybe, we don't know sometimes. If this podcast has done anything, he's shown you exactly why kid and I do not have a TV show,
Starting point is 00:49:22 unfortunately. And Roy is right. At the end of every episode of this paranormal life, we have to decide whether we think our case that we're investigating is paranormal or not. Why don't you kick us off, Roy? but what do you think of Musham Castle? Listen, guys, today's story is fantastic, and I love it. And I think stories like this are very interesting.
Starting point is 00:49:44 I think a good comparison would be whenever a child writes you a story. And when a child writes you a story... Tread carefully. It's beautiful. It's magic and it's an expression of their creativity. And you treasure it and you enjoy it. you enjoy every second of it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:06 You're going to try and get that story published? You think that story's getting turned into a cinematic universe? No. You can still love it. You can still enjoy it. But at its core is there sustenance? Unfortunately not. And I think that's what we have today.
Starting point is 00:50:26 We have a great story that I'm very interested in. The history is there. The legends are there. It's cool. It's paranormal. It's spooky. Is there a morsel of evidence in today's case aside from a trailer for a TV show where an old man said a ghost whispered fuck it in his ear? I like to think this podcast has higher standards. Why were they speaking English? Why did the ghost speak English at all? They're medieval Austrian peasants. Not a werewolf either. Ha. Not a werewolf. Oh, go drink some cucumber water.
Starting point is 00:51:07 Oh, yeah. Oh, you're a change man now. Oh, yeah, you're thinking clearly that you live in a fucking spa. Yeah, well, unfortunately, you made some pretty good points. Fair play to that. Listen, there's a time and a place for these stories
Starting point is 00:51:23 and that time and place is on this podcast. Right. Like, I love covering these stories, these old legends, but this feels like one where folklore, And, you know, spooky history is being muddled together with real paranormal events, potentially. And we have, you know, a classic, we should start a game show on this paranormal life, which is like, is it paranormal or were medieval people, do they have brainworms from eating mold? You know, just because people thought there were loads of werewolves doesn't mean there definitely was werewolves or witch.
Starting point is 00:52:02 Yeah. You know, the modern scientific consensus is that the witch trials of, you know, hundreds of years ago were broadly speaking a kind of mass hysteria. Sure. And that there might not have been any witches. Which makes us a no thing. You know, we won't know until we go to Musham Castle with one of these and do more beatboxing and freestyle rapping in Austria, which we could do. but until then it is a no It did look like when they were investigating it
Starting point is 00:52:35 And you can film me on some of the lore here But when our story first started That was already a long time ago And the castle was abandoned Yeah It has been Refurbished It has been redone
Starting point is 00:52:50 Because yeah that looked like Yeah That looked inhabited Nice Yeah that looked really really It looked like an old museum or something So yeah That's cool to know you can go visit it now
Starting point is 00:52:59 I know I think this age of building, I feel like none of them are original, really. I mean, the building's original, but like the content, you know, the insides, like, I feel like none of them have really been kept perfect all the way. So they usually become abandoned and then get redone. So, yeah, I think you might be able to go stay in it, not just doing investigation or something. I think you could go stay overnight in it. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:53:23 Check it out. Guys, let us know what you think of the Musham Castle investigation in the comments. whether you're on YouTube, whether you're on Spotify, whether you are on Patreon, this paranormal life.com, drop a little comment, let us know what you're thinking. We like to read them out on a Friday, if we can, on the after party. And you can get the after party if you subscribe at this paranormal life.com. It's really fun.
Starting point is 00:53:47 We shoot the shit and just talk about what's going on in the world of making this paranormal life. And very often we like to pull up the comments, which are frequently roasting us and the case. And our tiny desks for some reason. And yeah, all right. And... Which I don't appreciate it. We read out some of those comments.
Starting point is 00:54:02 So a drop of comment, we might just read it. Tuesday's episode that you hear every week, that's the man. The after party? The bonus episodes. Oh, well, like that. That's the wolf, baby. I don't know. The man is still good, though.
Starting point is 00:54:17 Keep listening to the man. Yeah. If anything, the wolf episodes are the worst ones because they're just barely make any sense. They're really scrambly. This is the public-facing bit. The after party should be illegal. It's the wolf. It's pretty intense stuff.
Starting point is 00:54:31 Yeah. Sometimes we just, you can do the longest howl. Yeah. It's like a 14 second episode. Sometimes we just take drugs. We just go crazy. Don't tell them that part. Sometimes we're just like piss on her own mouths.
Starting point is 00:54:42 I don't know what's a crazy thing to do. We even do. You did that? Thisparanolive.com. Find out. I don't even think a wolf does that. Find out. That's the tagline this week.
Starting point is 00:54:54 I'm just saying, I was trying to make of crazy things. I couldn't think of anything. Those are the craziest. in my own mouth. That's the craziest thing you can think of. Throw what you want me to say. Thank you so much for tuning in, guys.
Starting point is 00:55:06 This has been a crazy delirious one. I'm sure we have a harder-hitting paranormal case next week with Rory. We're about to find it. Okay, we'll see. That comes out on Tuesday. We're back before that on Friday with the after-party at this paranormal life.com.
