This Paranormal Life - They Found a Creature Living in LA’s Sewers
Episode Date: October 14, 2026Under normal circumstances America’s sewers should only be home to a maximum of two things; rats and, at a push, Ninja Turtles. But in 1982 in Buena Park California, a suburb of LA, a gang of teens ...had a terrifying encounter with something that witnesses would describe as sounding like Godzilla crossed with a gorilla. While some wrote it off as a hoax, before long dozens of townspeople reported seeing and hearing the exact same thing. But what was living underneath their city? Was it really paranormal or some kind of mass hysteria? Time for Kit and Rory to investigate. 1982, Buena Park, California.
Three teenagers were hanging out near a storm drain.
But when they dared each other to look into the darkness of the tunnel,
they saw something alive in there.
But before they could convince themselves it was just some kind of animal,
it screamed.
Those witnesses said, quote,
it sounded like a cross between Godzilla and a gorilla.
But here's the thing.
They weren't making it up.
Soon, other reports from around the town started
flooding in. What did it look like? How did the authorities respond to these disturbing sightings?
And does Godzilla imply the existence of Jesus Zilla? Answers to these questions and more on this
episode of This Paranormal Life! Hello! And welcome back to This Paranormal Life! You were being
joined by me Kit, this guy Rory, two of the greatest paranormal investigators that have ever lived.
This is the weekly comedy podcast where we investigated a little,
different paranormal case every Tuesday. How you doing today, Rory? I'm doing great. It's good to have
you back, Kit. You've been off for a little bit on paternity. So this is the first time you're back
in the studio. It's been awesome, man. I don't want to get it twisted. I don't want anyone thinking
that I don't love my family. Yes, we did just announce me going on paternity. And it seems like
I'm back immediately. Right. I did spend more than two days with my family after my son was born.
Shout out to Riley, my new son. They're saying he's one of the greatest
son's ever born, I think.
Wow.
They're saying he's great.
They're saying, he's certainly doing great.
I can say that much.
Okay.
So no, um, like, poltergeist activity yet.
Children in the paranormal go together very well.
So I'm just curious as someone who spent so much time in the paranormal world,
if that's starting to bleed over into his life yet.
Yeah.
That would answer a lot, actually, because we've been trying to kind of, you know,
sometimes you're trying to get them to go to sleep.
We talk about putting them down, you know, kind of like giving them a rock,
you know, rocking them up and down, trying to.
and get them to go to sleep. Whenever we put him down, well, he doesn't really make contact with the bed.
He kind of floats. So I'll kind of be like, rock goodbye, Riley. And I'll be rocking them, oh, go to sleep.
And then I'll kind of place him down on the little bed. But he never, never quite makes contact, you know.
No, okay. That's a problem. That's a problem. Okay. I wonder if he was magnetic or something.
Is that something, does that wear off after a couple weeks of leaving the womb? We'll call the priest.
We'll call the priest after this. I think that's a good idea. That's, yeah, there's a serious problem.
He's healthy, he's great.
I, thankfully,
using the magic of podcasting trickery,
I have actually been off for almost a month.
But hey,
well done, Rory.
Well done, Phil,
who's behind the camera over here.
The whole TPL crew has rallied together
and kept the whole operation running, seriously.
But it was so great to spend some quality time with the family
and I'm back where I need to be.
Hell yeah.
Not with my son.
Not with my daughter, not with my wife.
Investigating the paranormal for strangers on the internet.
That's where I need to be.
Yeah.
And let me tell you, it is, we're in the middle of Halloween, and we got the vibes going right now.
We've got pumpkins, we got skeletons, we've got a bubbling cauldron on the table.
We are deep into spooky season, and I think, fittingly, Rory, you know spooky season's our time of year, right?
Of course.
It's kind of our Super Bowl, if you will.
Yes.
And I think that means it's also time for an exciting announcement.
Tell me more.
It's been a while since we've done a drop on the podcast, and today that all changes.
We are unveiling our brand new line of merch.
Guys, I hope you're hungry.
Because this paranormal slice is open for business.
Oh!
That's right, baby!
Yes.
Audio listeners, Kit and I just ripped open our jackets.
Oh, it's getting hot in here.
To reveal our brand new T-shirts that we just...
just released official This Paranormal Slice Pizza Shop merchandise.
You're also hopefully seeing that I have a new hat on my head for the first time ever on our online store.
We've been able to have hats on our tour merch stores, but for the first time ever we're able to do it on our merch store online.
Yeah, shout out to Alan Clarkson, an amazing artist who came up with the design for this paranormal slice and he knocked it out of the park.
It was really, really cool.
Of course, some of our listeners will not only have seen this design before,
but actually have copped it already because we just launched this at our one and only live show of 2026 on Sunday,
last Sunday at the Clapham Grand in London.
We actually had, it was so good.
We had a This Paranamo Slice pop-up shop.
Yeah.
This Paranamo Slice shop came to life in the venue.
We had researcher Ewan serving up pizza boxes with the shirts inside.
people were able to get the t-shirts, get the hats in person.
But we are very, very excited to say that these are also available for sale right now.
At the link in the description, follow that to our new merch store pickup.

Rory, today we are landing down in Orange County, California.
Ooh.
A place you've been?
No, never been before.
Jeez.
And I gotta say, I'm a little surprised, you know, being October, I was like,
are we going to Salem?
Are we going to Transylvania? Are we going to the darkest corners of the world?
Wasn't expecting Orange County, California?
No.
The scariest thing there is probably the price of our ice coffee,
am I all right, guys?
B-D-D-D-D-D. That's a really good book.
Also, I saw a man's penis the last time I was in California.
It was a guy on the street who opened up his trench coat, and there it was.
So, I mean, that was pretty horrifying.
But, yes, I will agree.
I have always thought that Orange County is like, it's a fun name, right?
Yeah.
And also, there's a city in Orange County called Orange, so you can live in Orange, Orange County.
Also, fun fact, Orange County is where California keeps its racism.
Anywho.
But I'm sure not in Buena Park.
Buena Park is as suburban as it gets, known for its water slides and the theme parks.
The town is a fun getaway of escapism. Unfortunately, the events of 1982 would present that town
with the brutal reality of a paranormal beast living in its sewers. Or at least a genuine paranormal
mystery. Let's find out what happened that fateful day. It was May 10th,
1982 and three teenagers, Benny Hinsley and brothers, Raymond and Chris Bennett, are in the back lot
of a residential apartment block in Buena Park. Engaging in the absolute peak teenage activity of hanging.
Huh, another night of quality loitering. Can't beat it.
Yeah, but you know, Benny, for me, this is really more idling than it is loitering.
Guys, guys, guys, you've got to be kidding me. This is classic loafing. That's what this is.
Well, whatever it is, let's just sit back and enjoy the act of doing very little without distractions or horrifying interruptions.
Suddenly, stopping this important discussion in its tracks came a loud splashing sound from the drainage ditch at the end of the lot.
The teens rushed to the end of the car park where the apartment complex backed onto a drainage ditch.
They peered over the wall.
Oh, what's that smell?
Dude, it wasn't me.
Guys, shh.
Look, in the storm drain.
Inside the tunnel there was a shadow moving around.
There appeared to be something huge inside.
They watched, trying to ignore the overpowering stench that seemed to be emanating from the drain.
Oh, God!
Then they saw it.
As they would later describe to a UPI reporter, they witnessed a massive bipedal beast,
covered in matted fur emerge and begin slinking and sloshing around in the stream below.
They remained hidden and watched the creature as it roamed around.
It moved with jerking, violent motions, and occasionally made terrifying noises and calls.
Like I said at the beginning, they said it sounded like a cross between, quote, Godzilla and a gorilla.
Right, two things that both should not be inside of a drain, a sewer.
It's also just a fun coincidence that those words are so similar.
And fascinatingly, these noises were also heard by.
by Frank and Lorraine Misenelli,
managers of the apartment complex.
And Frank later stated that, quote,
it roared and growled just like the dinosaurs in the movies.
Holy shit.
So, which is cool.
We've already left the purview of these boys
and even just in the building nearby,
a couple were like, what the fuck is that?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
This is a bad thing that's happened.
The only good thing that ever came out of the sewers
were the Ninja Turtles.
Yeah.
Them being the only exception, anything that has ever come out of there is usually bad news.
I thought we might have even been dealing with some sort of pennywise the clown situation.
You know, kids going up to a storm drain and there's like a little thing inside.
Oh, 100%.
I thought it was interesting watching the new Super Mario Brothers movies that the access to the mushroom kingdom is in the sewers.
Yeah.
What's the lore there?
I know it is a movie ostensibly for children, but I understand the themes of connecting plumbing and going through the pipe.
I think that you've just nailed it. That's essentially all it is, going through pipes and tunnels to get to a secret world.
Okay. I just, sorry, I'm just wrestling with the implications that the Ninja Turtles may be next door neighbors with Princess Peach.
We have to move on.
Or where are you going to hide entrance to a magical kingdom in a bunch of poo?
Right, because you don't want people to find it.
find it.
So you hide it under a mug of shit.
Yeah, hide it in the sewers.
Yes.
That was also how our fans at the weekend gained access to this Paranormal Life live to Clapham Grand.
They had to wade through two to get there.
They showed up at the front doors of the Clapham Grand, which were clearly locked.
And then they heard, pst, down here.
And Kit and I were lifted over a manhole cover.
From the sewers.
We said it at the Clapham Grand.
It's just covered in sewage.
We didn't say in the Clapham Grant.
Yeah.
Sorry, you think we're famous enough to perform in the Clapham Grand?
No, under it.
But hey, I was taken, I will say, by the description of the beast.
That feels rare that we get such a, I don't know, specific descriptor.
Yeah.
Well, at least about the roar.
Yeah.
It's very like shadowy and blurry so far, but the roar is pretty specific.
Yes, and maybe because I was taken, and maybe because this is an audio, medium piece of art, let's face it, this podcast, I actually have taken the liberty of creating a mashup of Godzilla and a gorilla. Do you want to hear it?
Yes, please.
Listeners at home before we listen to this, I would advise getting a fresh pair of underwear nearby just in case.
Oh, it's pretty intense, all right, which...
I think is worth hearing because it's like, yeah, you should hear that from the building next door.
Yeah.
I think a noise in the movies that kind of almost shakes in an earthquake-like way in the Godzilla movies.
Yeah, you forget how high-pitched Godzilla's yell is.
I know.
So cool.
Don't play it again.
We don't need to hear that.
Here's just just Godzilla.
Oh, they were cooking.
when they came about that one. That's great.
And I will say, because I know that Phil, who's just out of shot, is a Godzilla fan.
There is a video for someone whose special interest is Godzilla.
They made a video which is every roar by Godzilla ranked by each movie.
So it goes down the decades.
And I believe I'm right in saying this is the 1980 one or something like that.
So this is the one they're referring to.
in the story, I assume.
Hell yeah.
All right, so now that we have listened to that,
just bear that sound in mind
because this will be important
when we look at how this case
was allegedly solved later today.
Now, back at the storm ditch,
Benny, Raymond and Chris remained hidden
and watched this creature for an hour
before it climbed back into the drain.
Wait, it came out of the drain?
Yes, I think it did.
I think the idea was the guys
hid once they saw it.
and it emerged from the tunnel and then went back in.
I know, I was very thrown by running around for a full hour.
Yeah.
Bro was also loitering.
Yeah, what the hell?
Wait, so when we talk about like a storm, you say it came out of a storm drain?
So what size is this thing?
Or did he squeeze through like Santa down a chimney?
How is this working?
I think I can help you here.
I think I actually have images I was going to get to a little later,
but I can show you the storm draining question.
Okay.
All right, check this out.
This is our first piece of picture evidence today, Rory.
Okay.
Dude, this is a storm tunnel.
This is what we're dealing with.
This is the hole where the shit comes out and goes into the ocean.
Right.
You know, yeah, this is a big hole.
I was thinking of the ones like against the curb.
So really anything could be coming out of this.
Yes.
Oh, yeah, that's big.
That's scary.
But look, even as much as teens hate the police,
Even these boys were so shaken, they had to cave on their principles, and they immediately reported this encounter to the authorities, as did those grownups who managed the apartment complex.
We reported it to the police, who did ultimately very little, at least to begin with.
Yeah, of course, because you called the surface people to help you with tunnel problems.
You should have gone straight to the brave poo officers who are down there daily doing the works.
the sewer maintenance workers, you know?
Yeah.
The people who keep that shit running, that's their world.
Yeah.
That's what they should have gone to.
Sometimes you see videos online, I'll be like, by the way, this is Carl.
He's the guy who has to break up the fat burgs.
Yeah.
And it's like, Carl, how did you even get that job, to be honest?
That's insane.
Yeah.
You know?
I think if we're going to make people do that job of going into the sewers every day to
hammer away at disgusting problems, I think we should at least make it fun.
I think we give them access
to a
kind of matrix style armory
of high caliber weaponry
and we let them kind of like
if Carl's gonna be
walking around the sewers all day
breaking out fatburgs
at least give them two oozys
yeah a catana
yeah let them do it
as he wants down there
Shuriken
Carl we got to talk
the shiriken are doing nothing
come on
but the authorities
maybe should have thought
about helping
because soon it would be
out of their hands
Word got out to the community of Buena Park and panic was beginning to set in.
More eyewitnesses came forward and more description was given.
Given that this thing was pretty damn big, covered in hair and bipedal,
people started to joke calling it Buena Foot, named after, of course, Bigfoot.
People estimated it was seven to nine feet tall.
Jesus.
Had piercing red eyes.
And again, by all accounts, stank.
even harder than the drains and sewers that it called home.
Wow.
Which I couldn't really work out to begin with.
I'm like, right, but how did you separate the smell of the beast from the drain?
But I guess, I mean, the drain's walking about.
Yeah, the drain's there all the time.
So if you can just walk by the drain when he's not there,
and you would know what that smells like.
But when he's there, it's a whole different thing.
Yeah, yeah.
My question is, we've talked about monsters in the sewers before.
We did a great episode on the urban legend of there being.
alligators in the sewers of New York City.
And a lot of time in those cases, one of the main theories is somebody had a baby alligator
or reptile, much like the Ninja Turtles and flushed them down a toilet where they then
thrived underground in the sewers.
So, I mean, what is the implication here?
Somebody flushed a baby gorilla down the toilet?
That would be a very big toilet.
That is not going to work.
Can you imagine being the guy who flushed the baby turtle down the toilet?
You're like, I can't put up with this shit anymore.
Sorry, kids.
Turtle goes down the toilet.
Then you're watching the news one day and you're seeing a ninja run across a wall like a
ninja, like stabbing people in the street, sledding people's throat.
Your wife is like, that's awful.
You're like, yeah, 18.
I feel a bit of sleepy.
I'm going to go to bed real quick.
You're like, uh, it's like, yeah.
Yeah, but they probably don't remember that I was the one that, uh, was the one that,
Ding-do!
Honey, go into the bedroom and lock the door.
Daddy, what's wrong?
Just get in the fucking bedroom!
Ding-no!
You look through the fish-eye, there's four chrome turtle men outside and fucking swords.
A green fist comes through the front door, blows you through.
It looks through the door, Leonardo.
Why did I give them tiny bandanas?
His wife is like, is the pizza guy here?
Yeah, you could say that.
Oh, right, Rory, I think it is about time that we got an artist's interpretation of the beast.
Walla!
Whoa!
It's weird.
Why is it from behind?
What?
I think it's obvious.
Because I didn't get a look at the front?
To show off its ass.
Yeah.
This thing is thick.
Let's say that.
It kind of is.
Okay, I'm going to let our audience know what I'm looking at right now.
This is the back of a very hairy naked man.
Whoa, no, no, no.
Which I'm not saying, I'm saying that's what it looks like.
I'm not saying that this isn't some sort of monster or crypted,
but I'm saying that so that you know that it has arms and legs and hands and feet.
And it is very hairy, but weirdly they've gone to extreme details.
to show how the hair on his head is also just different from the hair on his body.
So he also has kind of like human hair growing.
A little bit, little bit.
Yeah, yeah.
The hair is kind of Walton Goggins, kind of a slick back flow,
whereas there's a kind of more tufty hair over the rest of its body.
But, I mean, look, our lives are unfortunate enough that we have had to look at a lot of very hairy men
on this podcast and decide whether they're paranormal or not.
Yeah.
I do think.
Just like my last trip to California.
I do think.
We love bears.
What can we say?
Pause.
They spent a lot of time on the shading of the ass.
Like a huge amount of time.
There's a crack.
You know, there's been a lot of kind of Bigfoot-esque creatures here in the podcast.
We famously covered the Yeran, which is probably the closest we've got to a hairy guy in some ways.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But I mean, you know, Bigfoot.
the skunk ape, all those kind of cryptids.
Yeah, they all follow a similar vibe.
Apparently someone is flushing down their hymns subscription every month,
and this guy is just down there mouth open, getting hairier by the day.
Oh, boop, oh, oh.
And it's worth knowing that people were taking this, as I say,
relatively seriously, the time we're in a panic.
And often I would be sharing these kind of drawings from, you know,
the deviant art account of a pervert.
But that image there was actually published in the LA Herald.
Wow.
Okay, so it's like a police sketching.
Yes.
The town had worked itself into something of a minor mass hysteria.
And a, quote, monster watch was scheduled for the following night.
The event piqued the interest of two ex-Army Special Services
termed paranormal investigators, Dennis Ruminer and Tom Mozilla.
When they arrived at the monster stakeout, they were met by a chaotic scene.
Up to a hundred people gathered round the storm drain and the ditch along Franklin Street.
Young and old had crowded in hopes of glimpsing the creature,
and the investigators had a difficult task conducting any serious study amongst all these people.
But despite this, they did uncover some evidence at the mouth of the tunnel.
One report said, quote, despite the pandemonium, they were able to get a large handprint casting
and witnessed a large footprint,
measuring over seven inches wide,
before a couple of unruly kids trampled over it
and destroyed the evidence.
It seemed there would have been more evidence present,
but if there was, the crowds had wiped it all out.
Yeah, that's what 100 people will do.
But you can see, Rory, the bros here.
These are the ex-Army Special Services guys
turned paranormal investigators,
the only maybe more Chad-like paranormal investigators
than me and you.
Yeah.
With, I guess, allegedly that cast.
I don't know if that's supposed to be,
I think I'm supposed to be the handprint
because I don't think they got the footprint
as the point.
Right.
Yeah, yeah.
God, what does it say for you as a person
if you come back from war
and decide to become a paranormal investigator?
That your brain was damaged by an IUD.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's quite a strange career trajectory.
It's kind of like when Neil Armstrong
came back from the moon
and they were like,
what planet you're going to next, Neil?
And he was like,
Peru to find the ancient alien
library hidden in the caves.
It's like,
what did you see up there then?
What actually happened?
Because this is such a twist
in your career path.
And if you want to know what they saw up there,
you need to go listen to our special episode,
one of the recent ones,
detailing the recent trunches of UFO evidence
released by the Pentagon
because they saw
mad shit on the moon
including
basically when you go through the transcripts
of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin
they're like oh my God it's so beautiful
to be up here
the earth is so what the fuck is that
what is that
they're like Buzz stop looking at it
just ignore it Buzz get the soil sample
well it's hard whenever there's a
seven story building following me
yeah that was the ultimate version
of having to tell someone
they're on speaker phone
It's like the Earth is beautiful and really puts everything in perspective and
Oops something weird's coming
All right buzz
Did you guys send another ship up here?
The president's on the line buzz so just
You're live on ABC news buzz this is going out across the world
Holy f***
All right so let's talk about it after buzz we have all the time in the world when ABC are not on the line buzz
I tell you more about the earth but I can't even see the thing behind the mothership
They look like us
They look like us
He just starts speaking in their language
His brain is overtaken
Pling blong
Blah-l-l-lap
Weepo pop
Weepo pop binkong
Oh
I think
Sorry guys
I think Buzz is cutting out
No I'm still here
Still here
Touch
Take them out
Yeah I think the radiation
Is getting to buzz
Oh my
My thoughts have never been clearer
I can see
1,000 years in the future
I'm 1,000 years in the past
Ask me anything
Mr. President
But then maybe for these guys
They're like, you know, they're not active military soldiers anymore.
And it's like Hurt Locker.
They've come back to the normal world.
They're struggling to incorporate back into regular life.
Then they overhear some kids saying there's a monster in the sewers.
And they're like, their training kicks in.
Yes.
They're like, I guess we're technically paranormal investigators,
even though now I'm just using a gun to shoot a monkey in the head.
Oh, I kept the guns, by the way.
They try to take them off you
But if you hide him
You know where
You can keep it
Thing is when they ask for your badge
And your gun
You've got the gun
So you get to tell them
What they can have
Which is a fuck all
This is him drunk at the bar

These guys are so brave.
They don't even stop there.
They actually venture into the tunnel itself.
And actually, we might have been way off base with the guns,
because they did go in there armed only with divining rods.
Oh, okay.
Well, they are paranormal investigators after all.
Yeah.
I don't know what the logic is there.
Normally, divinely rods, of course, used to detect water
or in paranormal circumstances detect like spiritual energy or something.
So I don't know.
I don't know if these guys fall into the camp of belief that, you know,
Bigfoot-like creatures are like highly supernatural.
Yeah, there's like a spiritual or, yeah, supernatural link or something.
but yeah, that wouldn't be my go-to.
Let me tell you.
And here they found more prints.
Ruminor told the press later,
quote,
we discovered a hand print in a mud bank
on one side of the tunnel.
I put my hand next to the print
and pushed it into the bank in the same manner,
and I couldn't push it half as far
and I weigh 170 pounds.
So clearly something very large
and very strong had made those impressions.
Damn.
And honestly, with the results
of Mozilla and Ruminer's investigation,
more and more people were turning up
on Monster Watch. Another sighting was rumoured by a nearby canal. A public interest was getting
out of control. The local press started reporting on the story too, and soon the Buena Park Police
Department's phones were ringing off the hook with concerned residents. Officer Terry Branham
stated at the time, quote, we've had 200 to 500 calls easily. So this thing must be like
running around, like properly. Because if you see five, if 500 people see, see,
this thing, that it's not just poking out of the sewers.
Well, I think, you know, I'm kind of putting my own case down here, but it's not 500 people
have seen it, but it's definitely more than just the boys have seen it.
Right.
I think we've had multiple eyewitnesses, but definitely multiple ear witnesses.
Probably a couple nose witnesses, too.
Let me tell you.
Sounds like it, bro.
But the 500 calls, I think, is as much concerned residents.
Right.
And maybe, you know, a game of telephone, people hearing a story and reporting it.
People were scared to leave the house, locking themselves indoors.
The police had paid little attention to this case up to now,
but now they needed to shut it down.
A press conference was arranged.
Rory, can you maybe guess what the police's strategy would be for the press conference?
You know, the regular stuff, don't panic.
Everything's under control.
We're going to go outside and we're just going to just drop a grenade in the sewers.
Just toss one in one of the holes.
Yeah.
I should probably flush him out.
Yeah. Something like that. That's what I would do personally.
You're probably joking. I think that would actually make a lot of people feel a lot better.
Yeah.
Or everyone go home and flush a grenade down your toilet.
Right? There's boxes at the back of the room, take one home, which is a do with the kids.
It's a fun little evening activity.
Flush one down the toilet. Remember to take the pin out first, but then be quick with the flush.
Yeah. So don't let, you know, Papa use the toilet first.
Then it can't flush right away. You have to.
You imagine pulling the pin, throwing it in, flush in your toilet?
clogs.
Oh, that's what I meant to say.
I think also a classic, let's build a wall over the entrance to the drain.
Just kind of cement in whatever there.
Honestly, or even just bars.
Some metal bars would go a long way.
You know, that can still let stuff out of the sewers.
Liquid.
Hey, you should work for the city.
There you go.
Of London.
Look, in a kind of classic, nothing to see here fashion, the police's explanation was that the events were little more than a case of mistaken identity.
They had hired their own paranormal investigator, John De Herrera.
And De Herrera claimed that the Buena Foote, quote unquote, was little more than a very large, very hairy, very smelly, homeless person.
Sure.
That's how you.
You know what?
this is a great move by local authorities.
That we honestly, I cannot believe it doesn't happen more in our paranormal cases.
Yes.
Is for like paranormal investigators and the public to go to the police and the authorities and be like there's something down there.
We have all these experts that have this evidence.
And for the government to be like, oh, really?
Because we also hired our own paranormal investigator.
And they said that it's just a man.
Yep.
You know?
It's interesting that they went, they didn't just like hire.
a private detective or something.
They were like, we're going to fight fire with fire.
It's like it's not supernatural because we got a, we hired our own wizard to go down in
the tunnels and investigate it.
Yeah, I'd like to see more cases where there's a UFO sighting where everyone's trying
to get the government to investigate and then the government says, we actually got our own
nut job to look into it.
And he says it's fine.
I do think this bit is very funny.
The fact that De Herrera came up with this theory is smart, as you say, and funny to an extent,
and kind of mean to be like, oh yeah, this hideous monster that you guys are referring to is just an unhoused person.
It seems a little cruel.
I thought it was cruel, and that's before I found out that he came with a photo of a guy that he thought it was.
Oh, dear.
So, so.
So here's Deereyero.
For anyone who's watching the video.
And it says, quote, the report says, quote,
De Herrera presented a photo he had reportedly taken on Beach Boulevard of a tall,
shirtless, very hairy homeless man who was wandering around the area.
His conclusion was that the monster was no monster at all, but just this guy.
And we, this is a very grainy image.
I'm pretty sure that guy's got like a backpack.
He's in shorts.
He's wearing clothes and boots and a backpack.
looks like.
Yeah.
Imagine standing up
on a press conference
and be like,
this is in evidence.
There is.
Yeah.
We got them.
You can't do that.
This poor son of a bitch.
This is classic,
you know,
authorities gaslighting
is like,
right,
we've had a big think about it
and we've decided
you're all idiots.
You're all absolute morons.
You can't be trusted
with absolutely anything.
The only way that this is
okay to do is
the likely case
that it is actually just the guy in the sewers.
Listen, it could be.
It could be. I just don't know if it's
that one. Because it's fine to be
outraged and be like, this is not okay.
Taking a photo of someone without their permission,
saying that they're a sewer monster. This is unacceptable.
But then if he's like, yeah,
two minutes later, I watched him climb into the sewer.
And you're like, okay, it's getting harder to defend.
Sure, but...
He got off the bus and into the...
the sewer. So no one on the bus thought he was accrupted. Yeah, I asked where he was going and he
screeched like Godzilla and then ran into a storm drain. God, this unhoused man really said
no one cared who I was till I got in the sewer. I don't want to undermine my own case. I never
want to do that. I will say the description we looked at, the artist's interpretation,
It did a thing which I don't always love in descriptions and art interpretations,
which is where, yes, the creature is very big.
Mm-hmm.
But it is technically humanly possible because it actually did give an estimate for the foot size of the beast,
which it rated as probably between size 13 to 16, not even that crazy.
Yeah.
And height approximately seven and a half.
foot to nine foot tall. Look, is nine foot tall possible? Not really. Is seven and a half foot possible?
Absolutely. Yeah. And do people exaggerate all the time when they see scary things? Also, yes.
That being, although the only thing I will say about that is if there is a really hairy eight foot tall homeless guy in your town, that's going to stick out slightly more.
Yeah. But I appreciate what you're saying. It's not like this thing has, is described as
having six arms or floating or anything that's like particularly impossible.
Yeah.
The most paranormal thing about him is that he's really tall for a guy.
And then he stinks of absolute shit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Which in the sewers, that's, I guess, expected.
But look, this is the crux of the case.
Could it be human?
The police tactic mostly worked, by the way.
Yeah, fine.
This brought the temperature of the town down, thankfully.
The mass panic seemed to emotionally die away,
but the original witnesses were not satisfied.
Because look, the description is one thing.
But the sounds, Godzilla meets a gorilla?
Yeah.
You know, we've all heard crazy metal bands.
But is it possible?
No, again, like the Godzilla thing,
this jumped out at me as a question.
And I know we have a lot of metal fans
in our audience. I know that
because I've previously asked our audience
to suggest metal bands for me to listen to.
And we've got a couple of metal heads
here in the studio. I mean, Phil, you know, listens
and I listen too. As a death metal
vocalist myself, hobbyist,
this is my wheelhouse, okay?
The human limits of the voice box.
What can we do?
So I wanted to do a slightly
scientific thing, which isn't scientific at all,
which is, I was like,
who's the gnarlyest?
sounding death metal vocalist I can think of.
Okay.
And let's see what they sound like,
because that's the most monstrous a person can sound.
Right.
Yeah, yeah.
To see if there's any similarities.
And is it comparable to Godzilla?
Okay.
So my argument for the most monstrous,
a human can sound,
this is Matt McGaki.
This is the singer, the vocalist,
of a band called Cryptopsy.
A great band called Cryptopsy.
Now, not to be, Matt,
not to be confused with their first singer,
Lord Worm.
This is their new singer.
All right, check this out.
I mean, I've heard homeless guys do that on the tube, to be honest.
Yeah, that's pretty good.
That's pretty good.
Let's just do Godzilla and the Gorilla one more time.
You know, look, you're young, you're high on life, you're with your buddies, you're freaked out, you just saw a crazy thing.
is the homeless guy also a death metal vocalist we don't know?
Yeah?
If it's in California, potentially.
Potentially.
All right, look, you might have sensed we're almost out of story.
But before the story died down entirely,
there was another interesting development a couple of months later.
It's July 1982,
three Rangers from Ralph B. Clark Park,
about two miles northeast of this original sighting,
are on their way to the park office to start their shift.
That Buenafoot story seems to have died away.
Buenafoot?
Yeah, Buenafoot.
Don't you remember?
There's that creature from the drainage ditch in town,
spotted by those teenagers who were dawdling around a car park.
Yeah, exactly.
Although I would have said they were slacking rather than dawdling.
Could you say they were lingering?
Yeah, maybe.
You see, for me, lingering...
Guys, look!
As they approached the office,
they could see the earth had been scuffed up
around the cabin and they spotted a series of indentations.
Good Lord! Looks like something huge has been loitering around the cabin.
Oh, judging by these prints, that definitely looks more like tarrying than loitering.
Can someone please just grab the tape measure?
The prince measured a staggering 15 inches in length and seven inches wide and were human-like
in form. Although they were a significant distance from the initial location, some investigators
speculated, this may be a clue as to the Buena Park monster's origin. Because look, this is the
other side of the story. We are getting into Californian wilderness, a place in which
Bigfoot sightings are not that uncommon. Had the Buena Park monster simply kind of stitched a
route through various park-strain storm channels and found its way into a town, and that's what
caused the freak out. Right. You know, he's like,
panicking, he doesn't know what to do. It's like when they take Kong off of Skull Island and bring him to
New York City and start taking photographs of him and he's just freaking out. Yeah. You know? He doesn't
belong in a city. Yeah, he was an NPC on Kong Island. He was just a guy. He just lived his life
completely normally. And now he's a freak. He's a pariah. He's caged. And that's what they would
have done to Bigfoot. It is, I think that's genuinely a kind of interesting idea, you know. We
We were very comfortable societally with Bigfoot sightings.
If a hunter sees the Bigfoot's like, cool, man, get in line.
I mean, you can tell your friends at the bar.
Otherwise, no one really cares.
There's quite a lot of Bigfoot sightings.
The jury's out on whether they're real or not.
Most people don't believe in them.
Sure.
You have a Bigfoot siding in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California.
Yeah.
Oh, Bigfoot hit up the urban outfitters.
That's a story.
Okay.
Oh, he got some BDG relaxed jeans on.
that's a story.
You saw him get barreled?
Down at the beach on a surfboard?
Yeah.
You saw him get barreled at the wedged on a Newport beach?
Um, yes.
That is a movie.
You saw him down at Santa Monica Boulevard
with a road mic asking people what they do for a living?
That's a story.
He's making content on the streets?
You see him in Venice Beach,
rooting through a bin?
No, that is a homeless guy.
That actually is a homeless man.
Can you imagine just scrolling on your phone
and you see a social video of just someone going,
excuse me, do you mind if I ask what you're listening to?
And it pans and it's just Bigfoot.
And he goes,
Ra!
Makes the sound that he's playing around.
The screen goes straight into a tunnel.
How much do you pay in rent?
Bigfoot on subway takes.
So what's your take?
a hundred percent agree
you know that you know that
Instagram page it's like a view from a bridge
where it's like someone on a bridge with a telephone
really emotional music
but look guys
other than at the Bigfoot Rapids
a river raft ride that opened at the nearby
Knott's Berry Farm theme park a few years later
no sightings of any Bigfoot like creatures
have really surfaced in the years
since 1982 in this area.
As we know, a cryptid like the Buena foot, we'd find it hard to remain undetected,
especially today in a built-up area, all the dash cams, ring doorbells that come with our modern society.
But in 1982, was it possible?
Was it possible that one had indeed just got lost somewhere along the way in the Californian wilderness,
in a much less built-up America?
that would have existed then.
Or was it just a homeless guy that could scream like Godzilla?
It's genuinely a conundrum,
but one that we have to decide what we think about
at the end of every episode of this paranormal life.
We do have to decide whether we think our case is paranormal or not.
Rory, where is your head out today?
Here's my problem with it.
You know, usually when we're trying to find out whether cryptid is real,
we don't know how to track this thing down.
We don't know how to find it.
Yeah.
We know where this thing is.
He's in the sewers.
If you just got a guy
at the end of every sewer
and you started walking in,
you're essentially playing a game of Pac-Man.
Yeah.
And there are like 20 ghosts
coming towards him.
And all he can do is just move up and down the pipes
trying to avoid people,
but eventually someone's going to bump into him.
Yeah.
Now, they didn't do that.
Yeah.
But, you know, it raises an interesting question.
what if we go in there
will we find the bones?
Ooh.
Did he make it out?
Because it's either that.
It's either he,
we find nothing.
Yeah.
In which case he made it back to the wilderness
or it was a person
and they just left.
Or we go in there and we find the bones.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The way you're saying that
makes it sound like you're really excited
about the bones.
I don't know.
I don't know.
But yeah.
Yeah, you don't know.
He could still be in there.
I mean,
if they haven't seen him at all,
in X many years than, yeah, he's either gone or he's dead.
But what do you think, though, about the prints, the casts, all that kind of stuff?
I don't mind the casts.
I feel like we've done so many cryptic cases where, in terms of the variety of evidence that is available,
casts are the ones that appear when there's nothing else.
Yeah, that's fair to say.
When there's no photographs or video or like fur samples or, you know, any other kind of captured evidence, we always weirdly get casts of the leg.
What was left behind these molds.
And it's always like them showing you the cast is always like when someone shows you a scan of their baby before you've had babies where they're like, look, isn't he cute?
It's like, what the fuck am I looking at?
What is this?
I have absolutely no idea what that's supposed to be.
They're like, no, no, so look, this is, that's a toe.
And you're like, what the hell?
It's just a clump of, like, concrete.
It looks so strange.
So.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's hard to arrive at a yes and decide that this thing is definitely real based off of a mold of an imprint in some sand.
And I think probably the thing that this has going against it the most is what I mentioned,
that there's really nothing, aside from the yell, there's really nothing about this thing that
It isn't just human.
Yeah.
You know?
It's not like it's a snake down there or something, or it floats like a ghost.
I mean, the drawing is just the back of a naked man, a hairy naked man.
Yeah, look, I don't want to get into comparing cases to cases, because they're all unique.
They're all special.
It's like trying to decide which one of your children is the favorite.
That being said, our investigation into the Yeti, which was also.
me. There was also the Yeran. Also me. Can you tell I like Bigfoot?
You like Harry Men, that's for sure. Pulse. But in the investigation into the Yeti, we did have a
Yeti scalp and footage of a Yeti walking on Mount Everest. Yeah. And that was a double yes.
And that was a yes. So look, at the end of the episode, we do have to decide, Rory, I think you can take it away.
It hurts me to say no because saying yes would mean potentially being able to expanse a trip to Orange County, California, and as a huge fan.
Oh, all right, shit.
I didn't think about that, did you?
Hold up.
Yeah.
I am actually...
Because, brother, we can delete a lot of the shit I just said.
I am actually going to be in California.
God damn it.
Like a week after this comes out.
Well, you know...
But I'm visiting my sister who's in not near...
Orange County. She's the other side of L.A., unfortunately.
But you know who else is there?
Who? My sister.
So do we get, do we, do we, do we launch my, this paranormal sister life?
I don't know. We'll workshop the title. Yeah.
We get our sisters to be us and they go on location.
Because they're on either side of the city of L.A.
So if one of them goes in the sewer up north,
And one of them goes in the sewer down south.
They're going to find something.
And if they don't want to go themselves, we'll flush them.
We'll flush them.
We'll find a way.
I go, sister, here's a katana.
You're going to need this.
There are many fatburgs under Los Angeles.
It's an idea.
And hey, you're going to be there.
So, well, look, you can do some digging.
I think, you know, we can at least expense the Uber across town.
You go check it out.
Appreciate that.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Well, but until then,
until I see this some evidence for myself, it is going to be a no.
Damn, it's a double no today on this paranormal life.
Drat!
A double no in the case of the Buena Park Monster, aka Buena Foot.
Hey, look, all the various Bigfoots can't be yeses.
We still got yes on the Yeti, on Skunk Cape.
Was Bigfoot himself?
Yes, I don't remember.
I don't think so.
No, maybe not, which doesn't really make any sense.
Well, with Bigfoot, we've investigated, I think, individual cases.
Yeah.
Maybe not him specifically, I think, is.
a creature. So, um, there's still time. Yeah. We're just waiting for the right case.
I think we did the Patterson footage though. We did the most famous one, which was a no.
Which was also a rush. Yeah. But hey, um, I am certain it won't be the last of this kind.
Very, very cool. But guys, hope you really, really enjoyed that one. As I say, there are quite a lot of
other similar investigations if you want to check those out. We have a lot of very special episodes,
of course over at this paranormal life.com.
