Hi, I'm Mike Chernivsky, and your listen to this podcast is Un Called For.
All right, everybody, welcome to the podcast, our season 8 finale.
So I was going to do a potpourri for this finale, but I always liked me.
my finale to be somewhat a beat.
And I thought that the stuff I wanted to talk about in the potpourri would be a little too
negative.
So we're going to hold that off at the start season nine.
And yes, we are going to do season nine.
Because, you know, I still have a few goals that I want to do with this podcast.
So number one, we got to get to 200 episodes.
All right.
It's still going to take us a couple of seasons.
to do that, and I'm really excited about that.
Number two,
Brett Kassin, if you happen to be hearing this,
I would be more than happy to do a live show with this
for our 30th high school reunion.
So consider that as an option for the entertainment,
and it'd be a great way to get you on the podcast.
I can't believe we haven't done that yet.
but that is the case
and
Brett, you know how I get in touch with me
and all that
my number has not changed in over
20 years
so you can still find me that way
and number three
sort of a selfish and personal
note I would love to get my niece Penny
on this podcast
she's 12
at the
time that I'm recording
this, which means
another six years
before she'd be
okay to come up here
on air without needing my brother's
permission.
So I think she would be
a cool guest
to have.
And who knows?
Who knows? She might
consider going to college, and this would be
just before
she goes to college
or she probably could have
just finished her first year by
time. I don't know.
She started
early.
So,
all right.
But anyway, there are a bunch of things I would
like to go over in a
popery, but those will
wait for the start of the new season.
For now,
I like keeping
things upbeat.
I came across this article today.
So Craig goes to a site
KC2.6amC.com.
Which bills itself as your
ultimate guide to Kansas City.
And the article is
gets familiar with Kansas City's
unwritten rules. Tell us you're from
KC with that's telling us you're
from KC.
uh...
September 6th,
22,
84 by
Travis Mayer
and
Madison Michael
Millen.
All right.
Nice shout out downtown.
Here, Kansas City
is in flatterman.
Sorry,
in the sky.
Nice caption.
All right.
So I'm going to read the article
and, uh,
as I always do when reading
articles,
I'll comments,
uh,
when necessary.
So,
There's a certain pride that comes with living or growing up in Kansas City.
Often that manifests itself in quirky ways, like specific city knowledge, trans and colloquialisms, think.
How do you pronounce the plaza?
We'll get into that.
I am fully aware that we're supposed to pronounce Plaza.
but I have heard both
pronunciations
Plaza and Plaza
and clearly I prefer the
Plaza
pronunciation
Of course
none of these rules are
official or written down
when you just wrote an article
about them so yeah they are kind of written down
now
but they are absorbed by the community
if you are lucky enough to be
from the heart of America
here are a few unwritten rules that you have committed to writing
shared on Instagram and Reddit
that you probably already know
if you're transplants you might want to save this article for future reference
or this episode of the podcast
we have a dress code
on Friday's we wear red
not necessarily
and I certainly don't wear Chief's colors
because, as has been established timing again on this podcast,
I could care less about the local NFL team.
But I get it.
Two-time defending Super Bowl champions, four times overall.
Played in the very first Super Bowl.
Okay, I get that.
And you have the biggest pop star in the world dating your Hall of Fame caliber tight end.
So I get that.
And don't forget, Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays, too.
Yeah.
You know they're from KC if they dress like a KC tourist.
Okay, I'll give you that one, yeah.
I believe the Made in KC store might be a little responsible for that.
And I did buy one of their shirts.
For the love of God, include UMKC colors in your store.
for crying out loud
the only
Division I school
in the metro
sorry Kay you you don't count
Lawrence isn't
technically
part of the metro
it's just metro adjacent
so
so yeah
I've seen
I'm aware of the trends
and I
kind of sort of participate
a little bit
but
alright I give you that one
if you have trouble
if you're having trouble
finding your flights
gates coming home
look for people with KC gear
10 out 10
someone on the flights
will have something on
okay
well I haven't flown anywhere since
2008 and have no
intention of flying anywhere
ever again
so
so speaking of travel we're still in the subject of air travel it looks like
to book a flight use the code MCI for mid-continent international
but never ever ever speak those three letters aloud it's KCI and always will be KCI
okay on this yes the official initials for Kansas City International airports
K-C-I
R-M-C-I
Because it was initially
Mid-Continent
Airports
I am consulting
the Wikipedia
right there
So MCI is still the
I-A-C-A
code for
the airports
Because it was originally
Mid-Continent International
airports when it opened in
1972
by the way
the downtown airport
their code is MKC
so
downtown airport is much smaller
than KCI
and does not service
the type of jumbo
jets that you see
nowadays so so that's but yeah lots of room around KCI and Platt
City's just on the other side so you got that and of course if you've been
there the last year or two we just opened a new terminal single terminal
that good-looking pass security to check anything interesting out
I have heard rumor that they've addressed that, but it's just a rumor.
Nothing confirmed.
Moving on with the Arkel.
So public transit can take you to and from the airports.
There's a route that starts at 10th and Maine that goes to KCI decently fast.
Buck 50 each way is a great deal.
Okay, that's good to know.
I am also aware that they've been talking about doing rent.
speed rail between downtown and kcii i want to see that happen it's not going to happen by the time
the world cup gets here less than two years from now um but i want to see it happen so uh yeah let's make it
happen i think mary lucas wants to make it happen uh too so yeah let's make it happen
uh let's make it happen uh heck even metro link in
St. Louis goes out to
Lambert Airport.
All right. Heck, even the
Piccadilly line on the
London Underground goes to Heathrow.
As does cross
of his purpose.
All right.
It's not
always a straight shot.
Everything in Kansas City is
about 30 minutes from Kansas City.
Yes and no.
Yeah, it does
take about half an hour
to get anywhere in the, or it
seems like that, just to get from the suburbs
to anywhere decent within the city.
But
when you're...
But also need to keep in mind that
the city itself spans
three counties
and is quite spread
out. So
there is some truth
to that.
If you ever get lost, remember
these simple rules. The uptown
theaters in Midtown, true.
but the Midland is in downtown.
Also true.
North Kansas City is south of Kansas City north.
I think I've explained this one too,
so I'll go on and explain again.
North Kansas City is its own little city.
Kansas City North refers to any part of Kansas City proper
north of the Missouri River.
So if it's in Clay County or Plac County
and part of Kansas City, that is Kansas City north.
and yeah
North Kansas City is kind of sandwiched
in between KC North
and
the Missouri River
and I-70
somehow runs parallel
to itself downtown
he's referring
to the downtown loop
with this one
to the North Loop
and the south loop is what he's referring to then
that loop is so confusing
but that's what he's talking about
the Independence Avenue Bridge is undefeated
okay for those who are not locals
I need to explain this one
so on Independence Avenue
the infamous Independence Avenue
there is a rail bridge
that does go over the streets
that does not have a very
high clearance
below it
has been known
to destroy
a few
heavy-due trucks
because there's not
enough clearance
and
and I
yeah they keep saying
the bridge isn't defeated
because of that
because they
the bridge is
too damn low
so
it does make me wonder
because I do think
they need
start running some sort of transit down
Independence Avenue as part of
their Green Corridor, which
also includes State Avenue on the Kansas
sign.
They need to address that
fucking bridge.
All right.
And I get it.
It's a rail bridge. Not much
they can do about it.
So, apparently,
semi-trucks are the prey like I,
like I just said. Not enough clearance.
Then
if you drive,
to K.C.K.
Since I did mention KC.K. in State Avenue.
The numbered streets run
north-south instead of east-west.
This is true.
This is true.
In fact,
you'll go down
Antioch, which is
at north-south here in Johnson County.
Then you get to
the county line, 47th Street.
Cross-Sat County line,
Antioch becomes 47th Street.
so yeah unless you're in rosdale which is sort of annexed by midtown casey mo so the rosdale
section so we're talking south of southwest boulevard and east of mission road it includes
everything north of
47th Street
that neighbor
that it does include
KU Med
that's the
Rosdale area
where you will also
find Rosedale
barbecue
which I still
highly recommend
and
for the love God
to check that place
out if you're ever
in town
which gets to
the nice part
of getting hungry
agree yet.
Go grocery
shopping during Chiefs games. The store
will be empty. Some
truth to that, but
let's be
honest. There are a lot of people
in this town like me
that's particularly careful the local
team, but I get it.
I get it. There's a little
truth to that because I was at the
grocery store just a little bit ago.
And it was
and not more empty than usual
but
so
you can order
wings at the peanuts cooked
extra crispy charred or double-dipped
it only took
20 years to learn that
okay not a place I go to
but okay good enough
and this next one is funny
because I just mentioned
Rosedale Barbecue
we never reveal our true favorite barbecue spots
I believe I just did
unless it's Gates apparently
and Gates is 1A for me
so
the next to relate to Gates
if you go into a Gates barbecue no matter
what looks appetized on the menu
the response to the
counter person
is Bifabon
and their counter response is
one Bifam on a go please
and this is
after they yell at
I'm not happy
all right
and I don't know if this one
I don't know if there's any truth of this one
but
I did notice this too so
if you to
Tell the lady at Gates, you need a minute
to look at the menu she won't
keep yelling at you.
Ah, that helped you?
All right.
Names aren't always so obvious.
Okay, so here's that plaza, plaza
thing. So it's pronounced
Plaza like cats, not
plaza like Paul.
I made that mistake before.
Again, I've heard both.
I've heard both pronunciations.
It's kind of like Missouri versus Missouri.
I've heard both.
I prefer Missouri myself.
I think the difference between those two is Missouri.
It tends to be a more urban thing.
Missouri, you hear it out in the country.
So I digress.
This next one is playing.
Patrick Mahomes is never Pat.
Clearly you've never heard.
heard the New Heights podcast
because Travis Kelsey
refers to him as Pat
all the time.
Then again, he has a different relationship than
you do to Mr. Mahomes
and Arrowhead is Arrowhead.
All right. Similarly,
Sandstone. I don't know what they call it
anymore, but yeah, it's
Sandstone.
The amphitheater out in
Bonner Springs.
West of the
racetrack and
legends
I think the
fairgrounds for the
Renfair are in that
area too
but I
digress
and
this one's pretty funny
the dark building
in O.P. is called
the Darth Vader building
it's an office building
in the southwest corner
of College Boulevard and
Metcalf
another couple of
streets that should have some form of rail
in them, in my opinion.
Yeah, they call the Darth Vader
building for some reason.
But that's where it's located. It's college
and McHaf.
College being the east-west
in the
arrangement.
And if nothing else
sticks,
weed is on the right, sports gambling is on the left.
Okay, weed is still very highly illegal in Kansas.
Hopefully, our friends, I have a sneaking suspicion to go and re-elect the sum of a bitch.
But unless Time Masters is gone, I don't see weed ever becoming legal here despite.
Now, he can just get his ass up here.
and see for himself
Kansas is losing tax dollars
because of him
because people are crossing the state line
to get their weed
the only reason I have not
done so yet
is because I don't want to go jail
all right
and sports gambling
is on the
weed might be illegal
on this side of the sandal
but sports gambling
is legal in Kansas.
They're going to try to make it legal in Missouri.
This episode will come out after the election.
I understand that is on the ballots in Missouri.
So what do we miss?
Do you know any official rules that are not on the list?
to which someone said,
Who made up this rule not to call it the plaza?
Never ever heard that.
Lived in this area almost 50 years.
Okay, I agree with that.
I agree with that.
Like I said, I heard both.
I've heard both.
It's fine.
It's fine.
But I think the natural inclination is Plaza.
The border wall.
is real and ongoing only in the minds of k u missouri don't give a shit all right that's my comment on
that comments and uh there's no corner of twelfth street and fine on which to stand this is reference
to that classic uh kansas city song up i'm going to kansas city kansas city here i come
go ahead stand on the corner of twelfth three and fine yeah very very well
Vine Street does not go all the way to 12th Street.
But where Vine would intersect with 12th Street,
they do have a commemorative street sign.
So you could, if they stand on the car, 12th Street and Vine.
One thing I've noticed that annoys the hell out of me
when talking about highways,
If it's, okay, if it's an interstate highway, okay, I-435 or I-35, I-70-I-70-I-70, I-29, I-49, 670, 4-70, okay, that's, that's all right, everything, or Kansas highways, K-32, K-7, K-10, to name up a few, okay, those.
It's when you get to the U.S. highways and Missouri highways that annoy the absolute living shit at me.
So instead of Missouri 291, it's 291 highway or U.S. 40.
It's 40 highway.
Yeah, knock that shit off, please.
I know people won't, but it's annoying as hell.
Don't get me started on the football team traditions.
I've been through that all over.
And, yeah.
nothing I can't think of anything else to add to this but this was fun I want to do
yeah more stuff like this that's just fun to do and yeah we'll go ahead and end the
current season with that I want to thank you all so much for you continued listening to
the podcast. If you made it to
Fringe, thank you for
that as well.
We'll still think
about trying to do it again next year.
I wanted to get some far of
live show going.
That's probably a little more regular
than Fringe.
But
that'll be a discussion for another time. And remember, I have my
goals to 200
episodes.
30th year
reunion.
