the day following Kansas City's Last game, hosting the World Cup in 2020. I want to say a special thank you to all the countries whose teams that came to our area, whether they were here for camp or no. So the teams that were here for camp were Argentina, staying at the new Origin Hotel. Right across from the new riverfront stop on the AKC streetcar. So literally walk out the door, the streetcar stop is right there.

That's where they're staying. Good luck trying to get in there while they're still in the World Cup because they got security all over the place. It's all fenced off and everything. So that's where they're staying. They were training at Sporting KC's facility in KCK. As you for all three of these clubs,

that was the case they'd be staying in one part of the metro going to another. We have England who also made the final four. They were saying that the Meadowbrook Inn in Prairie Village, Meadowbrook, that part of a town, It used to be a golf course that became a county park on the north half with the old club has now a administrative building for the county park department. And the southern half began a little more built up and that's where this inn is located. I assume they also have a huge security presence and they were training at Swel Park, which definitely.

bad part of town, but Paraswell Park was transformed into a soccer village a few years ago. That sporting helped run as well. And the Netherlands were the other 13th. They stayed at a new hotel in the plaza, and they did their training at the current train facility, which is in Riverside north of the river. So those are three that actually stayed in the Kansas area and the train here. I don't want to hear it from the Lawrence crowds

trying to make Lawrence a Casey suburb because it's not. Unless Yudora and DeSoto all of a sudden get massive population explosions that necessitate them sprawling out and we can connect Lawrence and Casey through development, shut the fuck up about Lawrence being a KC suburb because it's not. It's its own thing.

Same goes with St. Joe, I think, but if you were to include Lawrence, then Algeria would, technically have been a locally hosted team because they trained in state in Lawrence. But I hang Algeria anyway because they played games here at Arrowhead. And that's the next part of this list is teams actually played here. So both Argentina and Netherlands played games at Arrowhead along with Algeria, Ecuador, Corosal, Tunisia, Austria, and then we have to get to the knockout phase.

It's at the end. Next three, Colombia, Ghana, and Switzerland. So to those fans, I hope you enjoyed our city while you are here. At the time I'm recording this, Argentina and England, both made the final four, so they'll play a couple more. So how this works, folks, is the semifinals. All four teams will still play two games, so they'll play in the semifinal round. The winners go on to play for the actual championship, but the two losing teams will play each other for third and fourth place.

That's how that works. But I will, before I got in the article, just my observation of a. everything that was going on during this World Cup time. I didn't I didn't even bother getting a free pass to that fan festival that take place

at World War I Museum and Memorial probably should have but didn't that's okay because I heard that was pre-credit anyway in Penn Valley Park and

and all that's And that didn't preclude me from actually experiencing interacting with some of the folks that were showing up to this thing. So, because it was great, you know, seeing the people you don't normally see in your town specifically for this event that was years in the making, having a good time. it doesn't matter where in the world they came from they just came to uh once was on my soccer involvement for this world cup phase actually came from uh volunteering at the alma mater at UMKC the nights we did the Algeria and Austria game and the group stage we the university hosted

a family fan a family soccer festival so it was a good time to get back to the college that gave me a degree and meet with alumni while at the same time

seeing people just have a good time they had different events for the kids and then at the end of the night they sat in the Derwood Stadium

right down campus and watched the Algeria Austria match on the brand new jumbotron

there so it's great and I'm actually wearing the shirt they gave me for the for the festival

so yeah one other thing I wanted to talk about because I was also running the street car a lot during this time, and I got to meet people from different parts of the world while on the streetcar. All that's so, by the way, this whole World Cup thing has been great for the streetcar.

This is from their KCstreetcar.org website. have a yeah streetcar sets new monthly ridership record in June so I'll go ahead and just read it you can read along if you are watching this and I will share the video ridership on the Casey Streetcar reach a historic new milestone in June setting an all-time monthly record as Kansas City continues to embrace the expanded transit system because keep in mind two extensions opened in the last year. All right. We had the starting line for the last and then we had two extensions and now the whole thing runs about six and a half miles.

So for the first time, the KC Streetcar recorded more than 600,000 passenger trips in a single month of the total of 698,000. 705 trips. By comparison, the streetcar provided 1627, and 57 trips in June 2025. Again, when the service was operated exclusively on the starter line, which was only 2.2 miles. So, so, yeah, got the two extensions, plus this humongous

event happening and I will attest that the street guards got full three highest ridership days in June 26th

were Friday the 19th 41,1,112 trips Saturday the 20th the very next day 41,398 and then

jump forward a week to Saturday the 27th, 48,260 trips. The average daily ridership in June was 23,290, while the average daily ridership for FIFA fan festival days in June was 34,139. and while a FIFA fan fest at World War I Museum and Memorial generate significant streetcar ridership with over 130,000 trips being provided to and from FIFA Fan Fest

Travel Day shows that approximately 75% of all June trips were to and from other destinations along the route, including the river markets, power and lights, the plaza riverfront and this reflects strong system-wide demand across the

expanded line which is awesome and I'll go on just interjects here I know they went to a capacity study for around World One Museum and Memorial because on the other side of the tracks

from where that fan fest was is Crown Center and specifically it's just down the street from where the royal Spall Park is going to be. I like a couple blocks walk from there. So it's a good limit test

for how things will run when baseball moves into the area. So and to quotes our friend Tom Garend, who is the executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority, record

ridership and the fact that 75% of the trips occurred outside of the Amfest Zone demonstrate that our expanded system alignment is delivering lasting value with improved connectivity, benefit of residence, businesses, and visitors across

this across the city. And yeah, here they have this is just during the World Cup days from June

10th or June 30th. boardings at each of the stops. So World War I Museum and Memorial on the extension, on the first extension, in the I don't want to say 75,000

specifically, but it's up there it's in the back. A union station, the next stop up going north is two. And these are two stops that would be most impacted by the Rorals as well.

Paranites would be third. Then Plaza, Crossroads, UMKC, city markets, Metro Center, and Riverfronts, the newest stop right in the middle of the pack. There. So,

uh, these are places people go to as I think just before the but just after the first extension of UMKC was number one or all followed by Union Station but but yeah this is good to see that most of the traffic is coming to to that festival then Westport's and then huge drop at less than 20,000 library armor

Kauffman Center Union Hill River Markets in South Morland and then the three the least used stops during this point art museums

I do want to talk about some of the controversies that happened during the World Cup as well. All right. Because, oh, boy, there were some controversies. This is the 2020-6 FIFA World Cup controversies. Before we get to the controversies, let's share what the New York Times had to say about us. So World Cup updates. Kansas City takes center stage as Argentina beats Switzerland. This was last night.

And walking down in our case, it was Grand Boulevard from, P&L to Crown Center and they do a little dance anything and everyone gets involved and anything which was

pretty cool unfortunately had to miss it that's not going to keep us from written this article so the Dutch donning orange and hopping with happy feats turn the streets of Kansas City

by the way that's a good time to also point out we have an Argentine

district in Kansas Kansas I don't know I don't know how I don't know

how Argentina that district actually is. I just know there's a huge Hispanic population there. But if you're listening

it happen to live in Argentina, feel free to fill me in. The English on social media, they name check cherished taverns like the peanuts and Johnny's on 7th, like natives. Over the past month,

the world's soccer fans have taken to Kansas City, the smallest American hosts of these World Cup games succumbing to the charms of its Midwesterners, its artisan barbecue, and its long but largely overlooked history with

the beautiful game. I should also point out we were the only Midwestern city to be named a host. So every other city is either East Coast, West Coast or in the South. But not since the 20,

when Kansas City was the Paris of the Plains, the nickname we still used today, because it was still a place that served alcohol during prohibition, as it stood shoulder-shoulder with New York and Los Angeles, local boosters say. Kansas City is now in the same conversation as some of those other cities when it comes to tourism and meetings and conventions as Kathy Nelson, the chief executive of the visit KC Tourism, and convention board and the Gary of Kinsee

Sports Commission and Foundation. We may not be in the top 10 population-wise. Just a little over 2 million for the entire metro. But we have the right people and the right infrastructure here to make big events happen.

And we see two photos here of that Dutch walk down Grand Boulevard. So far, I don't know when you wrote this, but

this one says, so so far 344,135 spectators, or an average of nearly 69,000 per match have filled the stadium here, and Kansas City's FIFA fan fest

has welcomed 300,000 people from over 150 different countries led by Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, according to visits KC. And I'll go and pause here.

Yes, we have a significant Mexican population in our city. A friend of the podcast, Conrado, is Mexican. So, through the first 92 matches, Kansas City leads all U.S. metropolitan areas

in Fox's World Cup ratings with an 18 share, which means 18% of all local TVs tuned in at the time of a World Cup game were tuned in to the tournament. KC offered the national teams not only a welcoming and devoted fan base of the state of the art practice facilities used by the Major League Soccer Teams.

Point, KC. and the National Women's Soccer Team, KC. Cairns. On Saturday, so this was written in the last week, it says, KC did host the

quarterfile match between Argentina and Switzerland. It's been expensive at times a fraught endeavor. The states of Kansas and Missouri, along with the city, spent nearly a hundred million just to build

a bus system that stops running after their tournaments. There's been discussion about that, thankfully. Let's get you to done. Yeah, let's get the let's get, let's make that a little more permanent. You know, make a basis for

possibly future streetcar extensions. Part of it is a series of Johnson County routes. that Mike Kelly, if you are listening to this, one, we need to get you reelected because the other two people running against you are nutcases.

And two, yeah, this should be the, it should, yeah, let's do Johnson County streetcars. You know, have them connected between the mission transits and the plaza by a streetcar line. I know the streetcar authority would love to

That's one of their future studies, I think, is a Johnson County line. I think this would help with that. So let's do that. In the preceding months, the American Hotel and Launching Association of National District reports in 85 to 90% of Kansas City hotels at lower than expected World Cup bookings. Once the games began, though, those rooms felled up, said the hotel years. And there's a photo of Merrill Lucas doing the Dutch walk. 1996. Promotion and relegation, Mr. Hunt. You forgot that small detail. All right. Yeah, we kind of did well this year, but it was in spite of our

the way our national setup is, we'll get to that when we'll talk about controversies. but I think we went as far as we possibly could have gone unless we get promotion or allegation in U.S. soccer I don't see us doing much better if hell. So continue with the article after Lamar Hunt's death in 2006 at the age of 74, his son Clark Hunt's last said about him

He shared his dad's passion for the other football, playing soccer at SMU, and attending 11 straight World Cups. The Hunts understood that the world's fans would love their city and that their denizens. reasons would love them back. Tens of thousands of people wearing the pattern of blue and white jersey. ordinary events from those countries from retaining visas. There's an Iraqi player who was detained at O'Hare for seven hours and a Somali ref denied entry completely in the U.S. which was bullshit.

The way that we treated, and by we, I mean, the government's treated Iran. It's disgraceful. All right. They forced Iran to move their training camp from Tucson to Tijuana. What were you doing, Tijuana? And they also forced the team.

They only get, okay, you can come to the stadium. All right, 24 hours before your match. but once the match is over, you got to go back to Mexico. That's bullshit. That's just disgusting the way we treated the Iranian team. And I know we don't have any Iranian listeners, but if you have to be Iranian or of Iranian descent, I humbly apologize on behalf of my dipshit government

while the Bosnian player himself also say he did not believe the challenge warranted a red card. Several pundits also compared the incident to Leonel Messi avoiding a red card for a similar challenge on Haise Mandi

during Argentina's group stage match against Algeria, which was played here at Arrowhead, while some questioning whether the earlier decision reflected inconsistency

in referring standards. During the same Bossean manager Sergei Barbaraz was involved in a conversation with the official crew and several U.S. players resulting in him receiving a yellow card for unsupportsman-like conduct. Barbaraz reacted angrily after referee Klaus did not award Bosnia a free kick following an apparent foul on Anthony Robinson by Anthony

making a racist gesture towards a South Korean fan in the stands. The fan is a Korean YouTuber. Also goes by Navino Kat. Post a video of the instance

on social media and went viral quickly. This guy, the Korean guy, made a post on Instagram. Oh, girl,

excuse me. May I post on Instagram and she thanked her fans for the support and said, You traveled across the world for the World Cup

and experienced racism. The guy was identified, got fired, and had to make a public apology. Oh, boy.

Clashes between Argentine and Algerian supporters in New York. The fans that were here for the actual game for a while I saw treat each other with

respect. So something must be in the water in New York for this shit to be happy. And a few other things. Croatian anthem being booed. Why would you be booing the Croatian anthem?

I could go on for days and days with this. But but let's clearly not everything went smoothly okay legal issues

so we have a few lawsuits involved with this work out and travel fatigue okay that's quite understandable because of all the traveling you have to do to do a nationwide tournament that also includes our neighbors to the north and south
