So when I'm a kid, I'm like, damn, that's Matt Lyon.
I always tell my homeboys in the hood, I say,
dog, Matt Lyon, the coolest white boy I've ever seen.
I will say I got that in the league too.
I'm proud of that, man.
You know what I'm saying, for real though.
["Send Me Your Money"]
All right, welcome to another episode of Throwbacks presented by Cash App, sending, spending,
saving, splitting, tipping, donating, more on that in a second, gifting, or just typing
numbers all with the number one finance app in the app store.
That's money, that's Cash App, and again, it's a throwback show on all socials.
Leave your comments on the show's YouTube page, all the social media
platforms. We will read it. We will get back to you. We always do.
Matt Liner, first and foremost.
How how are you guys doing?
You're in the L.A. area.
How is how are things today for you?
Yeah, you know, it's it's obviously been just a crazy week here. I mean, I don't words can't describe
you know what's happened to LA and
You know with the fires and the families and all of that and I'm sure you've seen the news coverage being in Ohio
It's it's it's really it's really been sad
But I do think
You know things are getting better obviously
As far as the fire and the containment so, you know shout out are getting better, obviously, as far as the fire and the containment. So, you know, shout
out to the first responders, the firefighters, they were I mean,
it was it was incredible, I think, just to see those people
at work 24 seven to do everything they could to slow
that down. Obviously, you know, 1000s and 1000s and 1000s of
people displaced, still evacuated still can't go home. So I did want to spend a minute just to kind of kind of rattle off a couple places
where you could donate. I mean, obviously, there's a million places out there, which
has been really kind of an incredible part of this to see the LA the city of LA come
together. But yeah, to support that LA Fire Department supportlafd.kindful.com.
Obviously they have been true heroes in this.
California Community Foundation, the CalFund.org,
money would go to rebuilding the communities
and help families kind of get back on their feet.
PasadenaHumane.org, you know, that's something like,
we have dogs and there's been a lot of animals.
So for all the people out there, like you can donate to the humane capacity and humane
for the animals.
And then, as you know, Jerry, just a lot of places go online.
There's so many drop off centers, there's so many donation centers, there's so many
different companies and people that have just put things together, you know, food boxes,
clothes, whatever. And just continue to do it, you know everybody we need a lot of help this city we that these families need a lot of help
so
Do everything you can if you can and you know, hopefully we can kind of rebuild the community as soon as possible
So yeah, but still crazy man. It's just it's been a really crazy week. I
Also want to point out too, you know, we work with Sinclair.
Obviously Sinclair has Sinclair cares dot com where all funds raised directly go to support the Salvation Army's wildfire wildfire disaster relief efforts.
So and you know, one of our presenting sponsors is cash out.
I'm sure today's day it's a lot easier to get the money to the people
in the places that need it. So whatever you could do. I've been talking a lot to our friend
of the show now, my good friend, Max Greenfield. We talked for a while yesterday. He's fortunately
safe and sound, but he's just completely jumped into donate. Like he, it's his job now. He
is donating. So he's going to all the center center Like if you look at his Instagram, he's all over the place and I think a lot of LA is coming together
Which is so crazy that it's unfortunate sometimes it tragic. I know when everyone comes together
You hate that it has to happen like this, but I keep thinking in my head
You know the Olympics are coming in 2028 not that that matters right now because it does not.
But I just think the Olympics will be one of the best comeback stories for a city. I think when
we're looking back three years from now, when everyone's watching the Olympics and all that
stuff, I think it's just going to be a love letter to LA and how the people came together
and got each other through this horrific, horrific thing. So we're thinking of all of you.
and got each other through this horrific, horrific thing. So we're thinking of all of you.
Yeah, the hashtag kinda has been LA strong.
You know, you think of, you know, like you said,
it's unfortunate because tragic events
and usually things like this help bring a community together
and it's done that and guys like Max.
And it's interesting because it's almost like
I was telling Josie the other day, I was like,
I feel like I feel called that we have to help you just felt like you feel like you
have to do something.
So I you know, I did a few things, whatever, like any any little thing for anybody to do,
I think can help.
But you just felt like like this is like, you know, like this is our city, like we know
a lot of people who don't have a home, you know, and it's like, and there's been a lot of influx of people
coming down to where I am because they're trying
to get their kids in school.
And like, it's just like, it's very sad, but like Max,
and shout out to Max and everybody else,
but like you just kind of feel called to do something
and whatever that is, whatever you can do to help.
And we've seen that really this week.
And that's been really, I think, incredible to see for the city of LA so we're gonna get through it you know it's
this is a strong resilient prideful city the Palisades community is is the same
and and so and so in Pasadena and Altadena and all of the other cities
that got affected so yeah it's been it's been a wild just kind of crazy start to 25 man
Yeah, and this is definitely not a show goes on situation, but we are here to talk about life and sports so
Going off that and we got we got a fun one today later on we have a guest who I you know
Well, I know a little bit, but I've been watching him on Fox
He's part of your your Fox
That the and yeah you some might say in the take universe. He is an up-and-coming not even up-and-coming
He's established now. He might be a heavyweight king Leshawn McCoy. You might know me as Shady
Joining us later. So excited to talk to him and he's great pulls pull some threads on some of those takes
But also get his input on we got a lot
To go with him, but few leftovers from the NFL weekend and then going into next weekend
Everyone's always talking about Darnold now. We've been talking about him all year, you know, everyone has their their take on
Oh, he's costing himself money all that so something occurred to me now. I wanted to throw by you have you ever
Been on social media Twitter Instagram whatever and seeing one of the crypto bros when there's a big dip in the market
Whether it's bit whatever something gets hammered and everyone all it's crumbling and their crypto bros swoop it and say you know
What this is a sale actually I'm gonna double up. Yeah. So for everyone out there saying Sam Darnold, you can't trust him. It's over. He
cost himself so money. Is there a team that might look at this like, Hey, look, he's still
going to cost us some money, but we, we maybe actually now get a discount on a guy who just
won a bunch of games and looked really good doing it, even though the playoffs was the
playoffs. You're right.
It's a great comparison.
There's a couple like big overarching questions
regarding Sam Dornal.
I think when you look at, do you look at this?
Do you look at this year alone and the body of work,
which was what, 14 and three,
and really one bad game at the end
of the last regular season game?
Okay, we can get into the playoff game in a second. Do you look at a body of work for
this year, the system, Kevin O'Connell, the team, all that, and judge it off of that?
Or do you kind of go back to the first five years, four or five years and see like, well,
that's that's who Sam Darnold is right? Like Like that's gonna be two buckets in which these teams
potentially outside of the Vikings view him.
So how do the teams view Sam Darnold?
To your point, do we get him for 40 million,
which would be a massive discount
in the quarterback market,
and a guy who now is playing with a lot of confidence
and get him into a new system with a new coach,
because you and I have talked about systems
and Sam Darnold's perfect for O'Connell.
Or does Minnesota just say, you know what,
we know what we have in him.
We still have a rookie quarterback in JJ McCarthy
who we haven't seen a lot, he's coming off an injury.
We obviously believe very highly in him
to take him that high.
And he's still getting paid a rookie salary.
And we can franchise Sam, or we can give Sam a three or four
year deal of $40 million a pop, and still develop JJ.
Like, we've seen Jordan Love develop.
We've seen some of these guys.
That, to me, is the question.
I don't know the answer to it.
But I will say this about the Sam Darnold situation.
The saga of Sam Darnold.
We talked about this a couple weeks ago, dude, and you knew the minute that he started just to show signs of being average. The dogs were coming out, dude, the sharks were circling the water. And that's exactly what has happened. And it happened after the Lions game. And then we're like, ah, okay, it's one, Let's see how he does in the playoffs. Rams were tough out.
The Rams dominated them.
And that, but to me, that game, and I
don't know how you watch that game,
you're like thinking, well, this is on Sam.
Like, the offensive line was terrible.
I don't think he played that bad in the playoff game.
But again, that's the nature of this beast, man.
You're as good as your last game.
And that's how people are going to view him.
And it's going to be interesting interesting to see I don't know
like I'm curious to hear what you think because
Someone's gonna offer him a lot of money. I don't know if it's Minnesota or somebody else. What a New York Giants. Yeah, I don't know
Let me ask you a question. Would you want Sam Darnold as your quarterback for New York? Yes or no?
I'm gonna say no as of right now only because I don't think the Giants could with Darnold be good next year
So I think we'll be in position if we don't draft a quarterback this year
I don't know if we need the 40 million or 45 million dollar bridge quarterback to hopefully draft Arch Manning in
2026 or 7 or whatever. That's my gut right now. I review is Sam
I want to ask you this is Sam D Darnold... and I'm just asking...
I don't know if you want him back in that building by the way. If you want him back in...
Is Sam... Is Sam Darnold an upgrade from Daniel Jones? And again, I know you're going to look at
this year, but overall, I mean Danny Dimes led the Giants and this is a knock on Sam. I'm curious
of what your thought is on New York Giants. For. He would be a massive upgrade. It's so funny watching
Darnold and who is it Mullins and and Danny Jane Daniel Jones walking out of the tunnel
I just know mark my words right now
Whoever the quarterback of the Vikings is next year whether it's Darnold or McCarthy or both in
Vikings is next year, whether it's Darnold or McCarthy or both. And Daniel Jones is going to do something for the Vikings next year if he's still there,
whether it's a half a quarter an injury, like someone gets hurt.
It's just the way it goes.
He's got to really, you're really going out on a limb.
Kevin O'Connor, I'm saying he's going to come in and win him a game and look really good
and start this whole conversation of all Danny, Danny, Joey, it's going to start. We are not done yet. I think, I think, fortunately, the
NFL is not done yet with this guy. I think, I think the best thing is Sam Darn. And again,
these guys know this, like Minnesota keeps Sam Darnold. They offer him either franchise
them, you offer them a team friendly, semi team friendly deal. You know, his market,
I think has dropped a little bit
and you still groomed JJ McCarthy
and you got your situation.
Kind of like what Atlanta was thinking this year
with Kirk Cousins and Michael Pennex.
Obviously didn't work out, but that would be,
I think that's the best case.
If I'm Sam Darnold and again,
if you, I mean, maybe you get offered 50 mil to 40.
That's a lot of money, dude.
I get it, but like for your career longevity,
staying in Minnesota, if that's the option,
is probably the best thing for him with Kevin O'Connor.
Well, that's something else we always talked about too
is like, are any of these quarterbacks
maybe gonna start taking less to stay in a better situation?
Now look, 40 million, it is not like we're saying,
hey buddy, could you make use with this change?
All right, it's not like he's taking that much less.
Yeah, but when you dangle 40 million years to 52.
Yeah, yeah.
Over four years, it's what, 40, 50 million.
Let me pose it to you this way though.
And I'm not trying to be a Darnold defender,
but as a fan of a team who, again,
I don't think in a million years the Giants would would sign Donald bring him back to that building. But just as a fan, as a
team who needs a quarterback, Donald, you know, came into the league, tons of trouble
with the jets, all these limitations. He can't do this. He can't do this. He can't do that.
Goes to the Niners, then goes to the Vikings. Now this year he's proven all Carolina Carolina
first and then that's what really played.
Carolina played.
And that really was where it's like, OK, here
are all his limitations.
And here's what he cannot do.
Then he goes to the Niners and then the Vikings.
And all those things everybody said he could not do,
he figured out how to do.
He cut down the turnovers.
Coaching, man.
Coaching.
So now the knock is, well, he can't play under pressure in big moments.
He held onto the ball very, like that's the big knock.
The pass rush was there, but he also held onto the ball and he disappeared in the two
biggest games of the year.
But you're talking about a guy who's already gotten past all the things everybody said
he couldn't do.
So if you are betting on Darnold and trying to get the crypto bro discount you're betting that alright
He's gonna figure out how to play in big games and how to handle a Rams team that came in with probably a
Shit ton of emotion and one of the best coaches in the NFL you're betting that he's gonna figure it out
And he's already figured out so much. That's the case to me
I'm with you do why it's like not over and done with.
But yeah, it's a, it's a, but also,
yeah, you could blame Donald.
Carbon copy two years ago of what happened to the Vikings.
They won a bunch of games and the Giants destroyed them
up front in the first round of the playoff game.
It's a carbon copy with Kirk Cousins who had an amazing year.
So it's not all the quarterback.
That's the case for me of how you might talk
yourself into taking the leap on Sam Darnold. I love Sam. I think he was, I think he deserves
to get paid. I think he should stay in Minnesota. If that option is presented to him. What look
out for week seven, Daniel Jones comes in the third quarter for an injury and goes for
two 40 runs for Daniel Jones. The third string QB he's gonna get it
he's gonna see we're gonna have a Daniel Jones one game sighting he's gonna go
back up he's gonna go back up Brock Purdy in San Fran I don't even know who
their backup is right now well one other thing I want to ask you and we were like
texting about it but I also want to give clarification for our listeners but also
for the people who love the NFL like me, but don't know the gritty behind the scenes stuff.
Okay. I, I won some money on the commanders. One of the only home to home dogs, uh, came
through with the Rams and the chargers, but the commanders were my other kind of, I just
didn't see, I just thought they would come out on top because everything seems to be
dangerous. They're dangerous. That, that play at the end of the game down three, right? kind of, I just didn't see, I just thought they would come out on top because everything seems to be dangerous for them.
That play at the end of the game, down three, right?
Commanders kick a field goal to go up three.
The Bucs are going in.
They run right down the field.
They're going in third in inches, inches, right?
Whatever they're, they come in and there seemed to be a snap count problem.
Baker said Hut once, no one moved but the center,
and the center snapped the ball, and everybody was frozen,
and Bucky Irving got hit four yards behind the line
of scrimmage.
How does that communication?
And fumbled, right?
He fumbled that play.
I don't know if he fumbled.
No, he didn't fumble.
He just got stopped before yours,
and they kicked the field goal to tie it.
And you knew the commanders were going to score after that.
So we know what false starts look like.
That was not a false start.
How does the snap count break down,
happen at that juncture in the game?
So I don't, yeah, so I watched it.
Baker said it was his fault on the sideline.
I don't know how it would be his fault.
Which is great because QBs take the blame for everything.
That you should.
And if there's a fumbled snap,
I don't care in what situation,
who's wrong or right, bad snap, QBs are always like my bad.
That's kind of like, you just take the blame,
that's on you, no matter what.
And then you could talk about in the film and like,
at the end of the day, they know who really was at fault.
Okay, so it's interesting because in third and inches,
third and one, fourth and one, fourth and inches, there's kind of
two things. One, you go on quick count, right? Because you just line up, go, you don't give
yourself an opportunity to do what happened. You don't give yourself an opportunity to
flinch. You go on quick count, QB, sneak dive, whatever the play you're running, you just
go up there, line up, boom, go get it, right? Hit them off, you know, kind of hit them off
balance, whatever. That's one. Or, you know, you just go on your traditional one count,
whatever it is, and you try and get the first down.
Going on two, and again, I wasn't there, so I don't know,
but like, it seems like they went on a hard count,
which is going on two, and whatever their cadence is,
because like you said, everybody jumped,
or everybody stayed static except the center.
Right.
So to me, obviously that's on the center.
And how does that happen?
A moment in the game, tired, overthinking it.
The play was a dive, he's probably thinking
he's gotta reach the nose guard or whatever.
It is just a lot, it's just, like in anything,
like if you're reading a line, you gotta brain fart, dude. just have a brain fart and you and you forget your line right it's
kind of that simple how do you do that in the moment of that game it just happens right you're
exhausted maybe you thought he said on on on one in the in the hot one that that happens a lot like
and then a lot of times like hey what's the count what's the count again like a lot of people say
that you know because you're just thinking about a million things. So
it's just the most inopportune time to have a bucks. We're going to score there. I don't know
what happens to have to have a gaffe like that in that moment, man. I think they were scoring a TD
there. They were really rolling right down the field. And then, you know, and Baker, obviously,
you know, obviously great player, you know, you take. And then, you know, he had the fumble earlier on the jet sweep
that really kind of changed the momentum of the game.
So it was a tough finish for them.
And but yeah, man, I look to the commanders and Jayden Daniels,
like they are dangerous.
I'm with you.
They're just dangerous.
The Lions for sure, because they also
feel like a team that everything is bouncing in the right direction,
going back to the Hail Mary, like everything this season sort of lining up.
And they're playing great as well.
I'm not contributing to luck, but man, to be walking into Detroit, nine and a half point
dogs.
The problem is, is the commander's defense is not going to be able to slow them down.
Right.
And you're and let me tell you something, dude.
And again, I, I, I, Jayden Daniels is dangerous.
I don't care if he's a rookie or not.
He's a dangerous player to win on the road and in the playoffs against in Detroit, there's
star playoff wins.
That place is going to be fucking electric, dude.
I'm telling you, bro.
I, I never played in the playoff game in Detroit.
Um, but I, it's funny. No one really did. And you're, I know, I'm telling you, but I I never played in the playoff game in Detroit But I knew it's funny. No one really did and you're I know
I played it. I played it like New Orleans on the road
You know domes like that that are just crazy like even in Detroit regular season was you know?
It's it's a fun atmosphere that place is gonna be rocking dude. So well
intriguing game first commanders win
playoff playoff win since January 7th
2006 I was a little bad. Who was there? Who was there? Let me see if I can the quarterback was that Grossman?
No, he was bears. He was bears. Can we look up the details of who the commander Mark Brunel?
Mark Brunel. Mark Brunel. Wait, what? It was not Mark Brunel.
That's a typo, Andrew. London Fletcher. Mark Brunel was still in a playoff game in 2006.
That's insane. Well, do you have any idea? Try to think back. I know I was about 26 years old
in 2006. You were then 22, whatever. 23. What, what was Matt
Liner up to in January 2006?
Dude, we just lost to Texas in the Rose Bowl, I think January 5th or 4th that year.
So you're now two days.
That was the beginning of a concussion. That was the beginning of a concussion for me after
a, I got a little, I had a littlecussion for me after, You got concussed?
I got a little, I had a little too many drinks
the night before at the Cabana Club and ended up,
yeah, I think I head butted my brother.
Are you like drowning your sorrows or are you just all,
are you like happy?
No, I was just, I was, I just was so drunk
that I think I head butted my brother
and I concussed myself for like six weeks before the draft.
So you didn't get a concussion in the championship game,
your brother concussed you too? I did, I did. Oh, you did? Oh yeah, I before the day get a concussion in the championship game your brother
I did I did I did actually got oh, yeah, I got dinged up in that game in the second quarter
Various you know a degree of a concussion because I played the second half
I actually was like I was balling so like it didn't affect me, but I got my bell
Wrong I went down your brother rings your bell again. Yeah, so then that night we that night
I was obviously crying, I was upset.
And my college career is over.
The next day or the day after,
we went to Cabana Club in LA when it was popping.
I remember Cabana Club.
That was the spot.
I think that was my Michael Jordan story, which I had.
Oh, is that what you were drinking with?
An Oakley?
Yeah, I've told that on here, right?
You've mentioned it, and then when I went to the Jeter,
Oakley's always there, and I was like, you know what?
This is either gonna go well or poorly.
Anyway, that's when I had a shot with MJ.
Oakley remembered it.
Yeah, that's when I had shots with MJ, who was like, great game, he's had the game.
Blacked out that night, and then apparently the next day the commanders won a playoff game.
They won a playoff game.
How about you?
I don't know if the math exactly lines up. It's funny how much we talk about the Golden Globes on
this show we were at the Golden Globes and this is a big Kevin Connelly shout
out right here so not to sound ungrateful but we were now been going
for like three or four years and it's on a Sunday or a Monday like playoff game
stuff like that I don't know if it was this exact year,
but this is a move Connelly created
that is one of the craziest, ballziest things.
So when you go to these award shows,
especially if you're nominated,
they put you in certain spots in the audience
and you gotta be there for your awards.
The worst thing is if you're in the bathroom
or somewhere else when they're calling out
one of the awards of a show or thing is if you're like in the bathroom or somewhere else when they're calling out one of the awards of a show that you or a movie that you're with.
But the playoffs are on and the award shows like three and a half hours and the food is
okay. The drinks are fine. But Connelly, we went outside and he is downtown LA. He commandeered
a golf cart and a walkie talkie with the production crew.
Our awards were at the end of the show.
So we have to sit there for three hours before they do best
comedy, best supporting actor.
He's like, for our, come with me.
We take a walkie in our tuxedos and a golf cart.
We tell production radio us 10 minutes before our awards.
And he, we drove to either Mastro's or one, in a golf cart,
in one of these steak houses downtown, parked the golf cart.
We went in, had a steak dinner,
watched the playoffs the whole entire time
and 10 minutes from the walk, he goes,
that all right guys, we need the entourage guys
back in their seats, we're doing your award.
And we drive the golf cart flying back through downtown
and get back in our seats only to lose to,
I think, Desperate Housewives, I think.
Yeah.
They moved the award show to a Monday night from a Sunday because the ratings of Desperate
Housewives was destroying the actual Golden Globe Award show.
And of course, that's the show that beat us.
So shout out to Kevin Connelly, commandeering a walkie and a golf cart
to go watch NFL football while,
I know you'd say like,
why wouldn't you stay in the Golden Globes?
Trust me, the NFL football playoffs
was more important back then.
Golden Globes is like the party one, right?
That's the party one.
That's the party one.
Let me, real quick, cause we can move on.
Do you get invited to these shows every year
because of just history or even if you're not on a show? I'm sure power like but like now power
never got nominated. So that's a fun interesting conversation with power as successful as it
was something 50 always said 50 if you look every year at the award show he'll talk shit
to the Golden Globes. It's the Emmys power not one nomination one of the biggest shows
to ever exist on cable television. Not one.
Which is crazy.
So do you get invited to go?
I haven't been asked to go in a while. The last time we went was 2016. We presented an
award right around the time the movie came out. So it's been eight years. I don't know.
I don't think they...
I'm just like a plus one if you ever need one, you know. Or plus two, you bring the wife.
You would be a great.
I would love to go.
I've never been to an award show for that.
It was always like the SBs, obviously, which are fun too.
But anyway.
Yeah, we did the SBs.
We had to carry Adrian Grenier through the SB red carpet
when they said, Adrian, who's your favorite Yankee of all
time?
And I just leaned over. This is on video somewhere. He He just looks he just looks at you. I just leaned over
I went Matsui and he went Matsui so he's on the record
There's only one place you can hear a three-time national championship winning head coach a Heisman trophy winning running back and national champion and
Someone to keep everything on the tracks every week coach
Irvin Meyer running back Mark Ingram than me Rob Stone get into what matters most to you
We take you inside the biggest moments of college football
While having some fun bringing you guests from all over sports and entertainment watch triple option on YouTube or listen on Apple Podcast
Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
Okay. I mentioned some of the spreads, right? Detroit minus nine and a half against the
commanders. The Chiefs are minus eight and a half against the Texans. Then you go Eagles
minus six at home versus the Rams. Those are three monster spreads for the second round
of the playoff game. And then to me, one of the more baffling ones and I only want to get into analysis. I want to get into if you think this lines up
The bills are as of now home dogs. They're plus one and a half at home in the famous
Allen Lamar matchup. Does that stick out to you? I'm pulling these up right now. Yeah, so
Yeah, when you told me that, I was like, really? Buffalo and both
home dogs, by the way, 2-1-0 over the weekend, the Texans and the Rams. I mean, listen, it's
not 2-1-0. I mean, the Ravens are maybe the hottest team in the NFL right now. And they
have probably your next MVP again. Obviously there's debate on that for sure. But man, I think it's a pick them.
I mean, one point is one point.
I think it's obviously a toss up.
It could end on one, which is funny.
This game could end on one.
I missed extra points.
That one is, if that one was like three or four,
I'd be shocked.
One, I'm not shocked.
Cause you know, that game needs a toss up.
I would lean Bills because they're at home, obviously in the way they're playing and then also just
Kind of Lamar in the playoffs. We still haven't seen him take that next step. I think the to me the interesting one is
If there's a team that's gonna get upset it's gonna be the Eagles this week, and I know that's six
I'm just telling you dude like and Philly's bit Philly's been like the quietest great year of all time right like they're what they went for
They're 14 and 3 and fans are angry with for to flying under the radar, which is a good thing
Everybody talked about the Rams dude coming in if they make the playoff with McVeigh
With a young kind of nasty defense a line that we just saw with Stafford
Who's a dog who can run the football as well as anybody
like that is a team that i think can go into Philly and and not just cover because i think
they'll cover the six i think they could win dude i really do um Philly's tough Philly's good and
at Philly obviously talk about home field but that's the one where it seems a little high but
if there's a team that's going to get upset this weekend it's the Eagles i think that's the one where it seems a little high, but if there's a team that's gonna get upset this weekend,
it's the Eagles.
I think that's one too where you gotta really watch
the weather.
Not saying, I'm not trying to say,
I mean, Stafford has a canon.
Is there weather in that game?
Right now, I mean, it's just cold as shit
on the East Coast.
It's gonna be cold as shit, yeah.
You know, really just waiting.
I mean, Stafford has a canon,
so I don't know how much it truly affects him.
Yeah, I mean.
But just upfront, just the Eagles just seem so much bigger on both sides upfront.
But the shocking thing for everybody not realizing with the Rams is their defense, I know throughout
the season was terrible and like DVOA and all that stuff, but for the last five games,
they've been fantastic.
And their pass rush, as we saw, is fantastic.
So that's gonna be a fun one.
I wanna ask you a question.
Because the weekend is Josh Allen and Lamar, right?
I mean, that's like...
Someone's gonna take a hit.
Someone's gonna take a hit.
I do think a win means more from Lamar
for as far as just legacy for sure.
I think that I think if Josh Allen loses this game, I think it's gonna be like, you know,
whatever, but he's been pretty good in the playoffs.
It always loses to my homes really.
Yeah.
So I think it means more for Lamar.
Is this the I was thinking about this.
Is this the most anticipated quarterback matchup, maybe of all time?
Because you can go Brady Manning back in the day.
Brady Manning I think is the only thing that compares.
I used to get really jacked up for those.
I can't think of, there's been some fun ones,
but this is huge.
Allen Mahomes a couple years ago,
and that game was pretty big,
but this game, because of MVP,
and then just all the bullshit narratives surrounding this,
like just everybody, nowadays it's just like,
you're just knocking everything
and it's become politicized and it's just so stupid.
Like, I tweeted out, I was like,
guys, these are the two of the best fucking quarterbacks
in the NFL ever.
That's not close.
That's it, whoever wins, great.
Like, these guys wanna win a Super Bowl.
It just like end all the other BS.
But I'll sing about like, man, this
one of the more anticipated quarterback matchups
we've ever seen.
We always talk about which game would you want to go to
if you can go.
Although it's cold as balls, too.
If you're ever going to go to a game that's not your team,
that you would want to just go to say, hey, I
was at that game, this certainly has all the makings.
It feels like I'm not, I'm not going to a playoff game in Buffalo in January,
buddy. You did your time. You went to Penn State and you went to South,
but you did your time.
I spent three or four days in Buffalo at a cup of coffee,
threw a couple of picks in a preseason game. I'll say this great fucking fans,
man. Great fans. Even for preseason game. I'll say this, great fucking fans, man. Great fans.
Even for preseason, I was like, damn, this is the hype around the Bills fans. They're
real and they love their team. That's why I'm a pseudo Bills fan. I just, I enjoy them.
Here's the funny thing that I want to just point out as an observation. We're making
the mistake that every analyst, podcaster, fan has made.
We talked a lot about Bill's Ravens.
We talked a lot about the Rams and the Eagles.
We did a lot even on the command.
We did not say shit about the Kansas City Chiefs.
Nothing.
Why?
By the way, I'm telling you, I'm telling you right now, why are we not talking about the
team that's probably telling you again? I was going was gonna say they're gonna make the Super Bowl again. I tell you it's like I
Don't know shady if he shows up on time. We gotta ask you we gotta ask you I just I don't
They've been playing good their offense finally kind of picked up the end of the year
It's the cheese man like like there's something about playoff
football. There's something about Kansas City. There's
something about my homes when it matters the most like that all
that's all Kelsey like the class they've done Ferris
dealer Ferrari. And by the way, someone someone will step up
because that's what always happens could be doesn't
matter. Pacheco could go off for too hard.
Like it's just gonna happen, dude.
I'm telling you right now.
And it's like the curse against all those guys.
And the chiefs are gonna be-
Do you have chiefs fatigue?
I don't, but a lot of people do.
And a lot of young people have chiefs fatigue.
As a football fan, I would love to see the Bills or Lamar make it.
Because it's like, how do you not like those guys?
Like just from a fan, Lamar's the greatest.
Like you love Lamar.
People are rooting for him, right?
Obviously, the Ravens historically have been great, Super Bowls.
And then like, it's kind of hard not to root for Josh Allen in
the bills, right? It's a likable, like you just like the bills, you want to see him make it because
they played second fiddle to Tom Brady for 20 years, right? Like, but they pay their dues.
Little old chiefs, you know, like, I don't have fatigue because I just, I respect like,
it's like Yankees, it's like kind of people have Dodgers fatigue right now. It's like because they can go out and buy whoever they want.
It's like I respect greatness.
I love Andy Reid.
They're not an unlikable team.
Like no one, no one like everyone loves Mahomes.
Great. Mahomes a great superstar.
Like people cannot like Kelsey for other reasons, but like Kelsey's an awesome dude.
Like that's a like, you know what I mean?
So I would love to see someone else make it. shit man like I'm not betting against them it's like
these award shows man how many years I went it's like guess what I tell you two
things that are gonna happen Meryl Streep's gonna win Kate Kate Winslet's
gonna win do you think they do is in the movie he's gonna win okay this is this
is more like the like the Pro Bowl voting, right?
Not necessarily who's gonna make the play out make the Super Bowl because that's one
on the field.
But like in the Pro Bowl, we used to vote and it was always like your top three and
you would just see the guys and it was like, Erlacher comes to mind.
Great.
Obviously, but it's like middle linebacker, NFC, Brian Erlacher one like it wasn't it
didn't even,
and it could have been like someone else had
the greatest year of their life, a no-namer,
but it was always like the name.
And I'm not taking a shot at Erlacher
because he was great, but that was like,
it was just like never like,
you actually never really studied it,
or sometimes we did as players.
That's Meryl Streep, right?
That's like, if once you become so iconic and so just
like, you're great. It's just like, you could just do whatever and you're just going to get nominated.
I wonder if that's how it kind of works a little bit behind the scenes, right?
I think it's like two things. One, once you're on that level with acting, you, you get the better
material. Like you're getting the better movie offers and stuff like that too they want you at the award show they want Meryl Streep there they
Want Christian Bale there, so they're certainly nominated
But yeah, it's like at some point you just know what's gonna happen
And it's like really could they really win every single year and that's how it was even with us with the office to show the office
We'd be at those award shows like these sons of bit look at Rainn Wilson over there
He knows he's gonna win Steve Carell knows he's gonna win
their show created they all know they're gonna win it's done you guys got those
that's all right it's all right I like we're the Buffalo Bills though hey maybe
throwback what there's got to be podcast awards maybe we'll win our award
together we gotta get me a ring somehow dude we were we were so big noon it was
actually cool we were nominated for a sports Emmy,
which is a big deal, dude.
Like it's a big deal for, you know,
like for everybody, for production,
for the company, for everybody.
And we lost a game day, or like we lost a game day,
or, you know, the TNT pregame show.
So we're like, it's a tough crowd,
but to be nominated was like a cool feeling and for you
It's like once you taste it. You're like, well fuck man. I want to win that shit
So anyway, that was cool, but like let's get a let's get a podcast throwback. I had a long conversation with someone yesterday
And they were asking about how you and I came together and I told him a little bit of history
But also he was like, yeah, you know know what to big noon so much better than game day. That's what he said
I didn't even ask he's like big news
It's just a better show like if I want to know more I just it's just a better show
So shout out to big you get that sports Emmy
Speaking of big noon. No one saw more Ohio State games than I feel like you you definitely are a Buckeye
You could be part of the Buckeye media with how many
Ohio State games you've covered professionally
The big ones going on Monday. Yeah, you and Ohio State's favored by eight and a half. That's everyone's on them
Justifiably so has Brady Quinn driven you absolutely nuts with the Notre Dame stuff
Oh, I just pictured when they won my oh my God, Brady Quinn's probably texting Matt
a hundred things right now.
He's actually, you know, he's actually been
kind of quiet this week.
He's nervous.
He's nervous.
No, I think it's more because
he's having his fifth baby this week.
Oh, that's a great reason.
Yeah, I think, I think,
honestly, I don't want, I think maybe today,
something, it's happening, it's happening very quickly in the next couple days his wife Alicia
I mean everyone knows they're pregnant that's happening pretty soon, but I
Was with him at the Orange Bowl last week, which was a great week, right and we were watching the game together Notre Dame
Penn State and they won on the field goal and actually have a funny video of him. So you post that yeah, I'm gonna post that yeah
on the field goal and actually have a funny video of him celebrating when they won. He's been fine.
I think he, I think he understands the expectation.
I think any, excuse me, anytime you get to this point, like you got a shot.
Notre Dame is a really good team.
Well coached, great defense.
And we've seen Ohio State at times just kind of lay an egg and they're, they're playing
their best now, but anything is possible.
I will say this about Ohio State and
It's not I could analyze the team. Everybody knows the offensive deep. They're elite
Ryan day. Yeah, Ryan day dead man walking a few weeks. This could be
the greatest just F you moment in coaching history.
And I say that because the expectation and Urban Meyer,
and we'll have Urban on the show one of these days,
Urban always talks about the expectation
to coach at Ohio State.
You gotta beat Michigan every year,
and you're really, if you're not a national championship,
it's a bust.
Little, like that's the level of expectation there.
And then the fans hate you, blah, blah, blah.
It's just a really tough coaching job.
And Ryan Day has been through the fucking wringer, dude.
The last year.
I live in Ohio.
You do?
The whole week after Michigan was Ohio State,
like radio here.
Well, dude, he hasn't beat Michigan in a long time.
I write, but everyone's talking about
who his replacement was gonna be after the Michigan.
Well, that's the thing.
That's what everyone was saying in this state.
And then you beat Tennessee.
You beat Texas.
You beat Oregon.
You beat Texas.
All convincingly.
You go through maybe the three of the top five teams.
While the other side of the bracket was a lot less,
was lighter, that's for sure.
And you're going to probably win a national championship.
I'm telling you, dude. Well, that's what I. And you're gonna probably win a national championship. It's I'm telling you, dude.
Well, that's what I wanted to ask you, though, in your experience, right? Ryan Day, he took
all the heat after that Michigan loss. He was dead man walking there out for his job
is throw. Can that galvanize a team can players rally around a coach who's take like the players
didn't really take the bullets. They did a little bit, but the coach took the bullets.
Could a team rally around that public
just shitting all over their coach?
Could that galvanize a run like this
with the most talented team in the country?
For sure, and one, absolutely.
And for sure, the big reason too,
when you look at Ohio State, they had a lot of guys return.
They have a lot of guys on that team
that have been there for a long time.
Right, which is hard.
There's some continuity in this
where it's not a lot anymore.
In a world of NIL, they've paid a lot of guys to stay.
And a lot of guys like a Jack Sawyer and some of these,
like a Mecca Abouka who all could have left NFL
or left probably for maybe more money.
A lot of them like unfinished business, right,
had to say so.
So that's a credit to the coaching staff
and the culture, but like, that's also while I think
this team, it's a very mature team.
And even a guy like Will Howard, who's in year five
and somebody's got like some of their better players.
Like, so they've rallied behind their coach
because they've been there for a long time.
They know how hard it is.
They know the pain and suffering of losing the Michigan
and what that feels like for the last handful of years.
Like they just know, just like Michigan knew forever
before that.
So like, yeah, I think that team,
that we might see a Ryan Day on the shoulders on Monday,
on Monday night, I'm telling you.
So it'll be fun though.
And I know we talked so much about last weekend
being unbelievable for sports. I think this weekend's better
Oh, yeah, Ravens bill all the NFL playoff guy. I think this is this is any time anytime footballs going on Monday night
They're gonna go after a good luck to all my in-laws who are pulling hard for OSU
All right
Now it's time for our money moments presented by our friends over at cash App, sending, spending, saving, splitting, tipping, donating,
gifting, or just typing numbers,
all with the number one finance app in the app store.
That's money, that's Cash App.
Matt, I gotta talk to you about some stuff
from my money moment.
It's a different kind of money moment,
but do you wanna start us,
or do you want me to get right to it?
Tell me what's on your heart, bud.
It's a money moment, but it's more a therapy moment.
They're tied together.
You know I'm your personal therapist.
And by the way, I'm free, so it's okay.
I'll cash app you some money if I do owe you for therapy.
So, you know, you're about to have a third baby real soon.
It's coming up.
Very, very happy for you guys.
I can't wait.
Are you?
I know, truly.
No, I know. I've teased a few times on this show
that my wife really wants a third baby. She knows I'm saying all this so I'm not betraying any trusts.
Let's just say she's covered some ground in the last few weeks of us trying to have a third.
Not that I've been against it, but I'm 45. She's turning 37 today. Happy birthday, baby. Love you.
but I'm 45, she's turning 37 today. Happy birthday, baby, love you.
I'm starting to put you on blast.
And for my money moment, I just,
after I got past all the how much life will change
for a third baby, I started going down the road
with my wife, because I just don't think she knows
of how much it costs to raise a baby.
That's our world, they don't care.
They just say, oh, we'll be fine.
That's my money moment, because you know what I remember? I remember when they're babies, they don't cost nothing.
If your wife breast feeds, there's no food. It's just diapers and that's it. They don't cost anything.
But now I got a five year old and a four year old and we just went on a vacation and all this stuff.
And they're in Taekwondo and basketball. And I'm like, you know, another kid.
Are they in private school out there?
Yeah, they're in like a Montessori school. So I'm like, you know, another kid. Are they in private school out there?
Yeah, they're in like a Montessori school.
So I'm like, another kid.
I'm not saying we should base the decision off of that.
And I know a lot of, and we're fortunate,
and a lot of families make large families work
across all different financial areas.
Yeah, you sound like a spoiled asshole, Jerry.
Come on.
I'm just trying to point out, I don't
know if my wife has any idea truly how much we've spent
on our two kids. Is that okay to bring up just as a money moment? Is that fine?
For sure. By the way, like in my house, I'm the one that's like, well, yeah, like now we're going
to have to pay for five flights. Well, a newborn, not for a bit, but like we're paying for five people and it used to be like, you guys know, like before the boys were two,
like they're lap kids, right? Like it was, you're paying for you, whatever. You buy one
extra seat. So you have, you have three seats for four people. Now it's like, no, you got
it. You got to pay for all four. Yeah, dude. Now you got to pay for five. And then all
of a sudden in about three years, three are gonna be in Montessori
Or private school. I don't know. I'm sure where you live, but it's pretty damn expensive. So
Again, I'm not crying the blues. This isn't like a oh my god. I'm not crying the blues
I'm just saying is it when you do think about expanding your family now that we get past all the emotional parts of it
Which my wife and I have worked or I'm just thinking about it. That's because you and I think rationally.
We think about...
It's not even on the table for her.
It's not even a thought.
Dude, the wives don't give a shit, dude.
They're just like,
oh, we'll just figure it out.
Our family's gonna be complete now.
And this and that.
And I'm like, fuck. I mean, I get it. I get it.
Well...
Dude, listen, man.
I think she's won the battle.
I think we might, there might be some news dropping.
You already, you already waved the white flag.
Let me tell you this.
You are not, you are not alone.
I'm in this with you, buddy.
I have your back, okay?
We just need this.
We need throwbacks to continue.
So, we need throwbacks to keep on continuing.
Cash app, cash app, we appreciate you.
Or next thing you know,
I'm going to be asking you like, Hey, do you need any like comedic actors on big noon?
I'm going to be asking you to hire me a big we'll give you a guest. We'll give you a guest
spot. You'll get paid for parents. Thank you. We're having some good fun, but we're all
awesome. We are excited for you and you guys have been some healthy motivation for us to
expand the family. So we're in the,
it'll be great for the podcast. It's always, it's always nice. I think in this generally,
like when you have friends, family, friends, close inner circle in the same, even though
we don't live next in the same timeline, right? Like that's what helps. Like you just get
through it, man. You, whether it's good bad, venting, emotion, all this stuff,
you're just you're on the tidal wave together, dude.
And it sounds like you're going to be joining that tidal wave
here pretty soon, which I can't wait to I can't wait to get
that news at some point.
Shout out to Cash App.
Send money quick, please.
Send them.
And shout out to our wives.
Shout out to our wives who will not listen to this segment.
And also a big happy birthday to Breanne Ferraro.
I love you, babe.
Yes.
Happy birthday, Bre.
All right.
Let's take a quick break and then let's get to Shady McCoy, everybody.
All right.
You can see him on weekdays on Fox's The Facility.
He's also got his own podcast with Deshaun Jackson called The 25 in 10 Show.
You all remember him as the legendary NFL running back.
LaShawn McCoy joins the show.
Thank you so much for coming on, man.
Hey, listen, now a lot is because, Matt, you know what I'm saying?
That's my boy on my high school recruiting trip.
He took good care of me. Right. But another
reason why I came with his pocket is I wanted to talk to you. Listen, I got a lot of talent,
though. I'm trying to get into acting. Yeah. I know you got some connections, though.
So talk to me. Would you have wanted Entourage or Power back in it? Like those shows are both
not. Now, listen, power is kind of on the air. Which show would you have wanted to be on?
Now, 50 Cent was always my favorite as a kid.
Right. I just got to be honest.
And listen, I love the lawyers that don't mind getting a little dirty.
Yeah, I like power. Yes.
Hey, that was always very bigger debates is me versus Method Man,
who's the lawyer on the spin.
I'm like, don't put me up against my childhood.
Method Man is my child. Wu Tang is for the children. We know that. He was the lawyer on the spin on my don't put me up against my childhood. Method Man is my child.
Wu Tang is for the children.
We know that he was the lawyer in the spin off.
And I feel like Proctor got the better of Method Man, though, as the law, as the dirty
lawyer. Yo, real talk, though.
Powers like that, though.
Only thing I don't like about power, I mean, I hate Tyreek.
Yeah, I don't like him.
Everybody got mad at Tyreek.
Yo, well, I got rid of Ghost, it hurt me, dawg.
It hurt me.
Listen, you know, people still to this day come up and ask me, was that real?
Is he coming back?
I'm like, you guys watched the show, right?
My dad says that all day.
If I call my dad on his face, I'm just like, listen, I'm telling you right now, he's going to come back eventually.
Your dad's one of the Ghost-ers? He thinks ghosts coming back?
My whole family's in there. My grandma, she's like 85. She loves, she loves power.
Yeah. Wow.
I love that.
It's from New York. So I guess that's why.
By the way, a month ago or a couple months ago, we had, we did a pod with the whole
entourage crew. So they all came back. We haven't even put it out yet. And they made me I had to read a whole I had to audition in front of Jerry.
We made him do it.
Yeah, we did a fan.
Remember the movie Draft Day?
You remember Draft Day?
By the way, Aaron Foster was in that he auditioned for that role.
And they made me redo a whole thing and they were just kicking my ass in this shit.
Well, how'd you how'd you do your quarterback?
We're gonna drop it soon. We're going to drop it soon.
We're going to drop the audition soon.
It's recorded.
I got acting credits, man.
I think I was pretty good.
With the UFC, you would be like, come on.
You got to be, come on, seriously.
Dude, I know, man.
So listen, right before we jumped in,
you mentioned Coach Wonstad, too.
And you responded in a tweet where you said,
Coach Wonstad saved my life. Can you, for a tweet where you said, Coach wants that, save my life.
Can you, can you for a second dig a little deeper?
What do you, what do you mean?
He told the story a little bit where, you know, you'd broken your leg and that stuff.
But tell us about, about Coach.
I won't get too deep into it because I get emotional.
That's like the only story that kind of gets me really emotional.
You know, because like, so in high school, I'm from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, right?
And I had all those, you know, the big scholarships, right?
Like I said, I remember when Matt was-
We're going to get there in a couple minutes, so save it.
I don't remember a lot of that weekend, so don't get me in trouble.
I do.
Yeah, look, now, you know, maybe my boy, but we just talking.
And I remember when I'm like, damn, that's Matt Liner.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, oh shit, Reggie Bush, all these dudes,
Lendell White, they had all nice cars
before the NIL was really real.
And Matt, he had a girlfriend, right?
I guess it's your baby mom now, I don't know what it is,
but they was going back and forth.
I'm like, oh damn, you know what I mean?
Okay, makes sense, right?
But nah, I was the top recruit.
And I had all, what, like 78 scholarships.
It's crazy because I was so hard to recruit it
that only the head coaches really recruited me.
You know what I mean?
Like I had T-Mac with the running back coach,
but I really dealt with Pete Carroll.
You know what I'm saying?
And so I had everything, I thought I knew everything. and then I broke my ankle and then all them schools and
calls, they stopped.
And I was like, damn.
And I remember when Penn State is the in-state school, so they're always got to be loyal
because there's other players in the state they want to get from a high school or around
the area.
And Juan said from Pitt, he had a big name, right? And
he was still trying to recruit me. I'm like, dang, I only got like two schools left. That's
crazy. I tried to commit to Miami just to, cause I love Miami, right? That's why running
backs with they, they honored my, my commitment, but they didn't really honor it to be honest.
So I remember, uh, I had to go to prep school cause I didn't want to go to school no more. I was banged up.
I didn't have no scholarships.
And when I get to the prep school,
you know, Juan said,
I mean, he was still talking to me the same way.
He said, I'm the only coach,
this is what he told me.
I'm the only coach that has the power
to put you in front of the NFL scouts,
put you in front of NFL head coaches.
I remember him calling up North Turner.
He called Damian Thomas., he was still selling me. Right? And the whole time I was like,
you know what, I'm gonna go to Penn State just because it's the in-state school. And like,
at the time, this is a crazy story. So when I break my ankle, Penn State, they find out,
they don't let no doctors do my surgery. They fly their doctor, their team doctor from their game
in Happy Valley, right, on helicopter.
He comes in Harrisburg and does my surgery.
So they're thinking like, all right,
this kid's gotta come here
because we doing all this for him.
Right? Right?
So, but I didn't feel like I fit in
because Paterno, rest in peace,
he was like, he had one agenda and all the other coaches
had something else.
So like, small example, I told you I'm a 50 cent fan.
So I got the durag on with the coat, with the hat, with the jersey, right?
He comes in there, the coach was like, hey, take your stuff off, Paterno's coming.
Right?
Right?
So then when I, so I remember Juan said, say, hey hey look, let's come do a visit and to see
how you like it.
So I remember telling my dad like, I mean it's pit, like come on, you know what I'm
saying?
It's pit.
But I took him out and go, right?
So I go take the visit and I loved it, right?
And Juan said, so yo, I'm not guaranteeing you're going to start, but I'm going to give
you a chance to regain your name, regain your status.
So when he told me that, you know what I mean?
Then I get the pit, you know, it was real, you know what I mean?
And like everybody kind of like turn it back on me and treat me a certain way, you know,
wants to give me a chance to regain that respect.
You know what I mean?
I went in there, I went to work.
You really did.
Yep. You know what I mean? I went in there and I went to work. You really did. Yeah.
I remember my freshman year I started, whatever,
you know, like all American stuff and all that.
Then my second year, I remember one of the coaches,
he coached in the NFL, I won't say his name,
but he said, Juanstead came in the first day of camp.
He said, all right, guys, we gotta make some moves
because 25, he won't be here long. And I always, you
know, thank Juanstead for that because, you know, my life has changed, you know what I
mean? And like without him, you know, who knows? You know what I'm saying? So, so Coach
Juanstead really, um, his wife Jan, great, great woman, you know, they're a good family
man and like they really, you know, without Juanstead, I probably, who knows, you know, they good family man. And like they really, you know, what I, what I want to say, I probably, who knows.
You know?
Shit, man. We appreciate that. It's, it's, I work with Coach Fox forever. And there's
like, and I told Jerry, and when we had him on last week, I told Jerry, I said, man, you're
going to love Coach, man. He's like, I just want to go hang out with him for like an hour.
He's loyal, obviously. He's loyal. He like genuine. Jan is the best. And we really became family
the years we worked at Fox. And I'll tell you this, man. I'm not just saying this, he
spoke probably the most highly of you. He'd tell fun stories and all that. But he was
like, man, Shady was my boy, man. He's like, if I could give him the fucking ball 60 times
a game, I would have put his ass in Wildcat every single week.
Hates quarterbacks. Hates quarterbacks. He wildcat every single week hates quarterbacks he hates quarterbacks he was like he's like Matt
you quarterbacks are soft you know coach he's a pick guy man he's tough as nails
but dude that's awesome so you met okay so you mentioned the NIL shit okay so
first of all I drove a Ford Ranger at school I picked you up in a Hummer I know
here's the story we went in a Hummer It wasn't my car, but it was a relationship prior to going so it was a fam
It was a family car we can dive into USC to second
But I drove a white Ford Ranger pickup and my boys used to make fun of me like yo what the fuck dude
Why are you still driving that car? I was like I'm not getting paid like some of the other guys here getting paid
Okay coach basically I quote said shady we were we were NIL before NIL I remember I borrowed a Hummer I don't
remember who drove because it wasn't me but did I was I driving I don't remember
I don't think so so okay so we borrowed a Hummer a friend of mine who I was I
was friends with before you know all that shit so like it was like a long
relationship so wasn't a you know, all that shit. So like it was like a long relationship. So wasn't a
you know violation. I just all I remember from that weekend
is and all I tell people is like yeah, I helped host Shady. Obviously, I didn't do a good enough job because he didn't come.
That's all I remember, dude. So
you might. I remember.
Talk to us.
Shit. So when I'm a kid, I'm like damn, yo, that's Matt Lyonard. Yo I always tell my homeboys in the hood, I say dawg, Matt Lyonard the coolest white
boy I've ever seen.
You know what I'm saying?
I will say I got that in the league too.
I'm proud of that man.
I appreciate you.
Yeah and we was in the Hummer, right?
I remember going to, I went shopping with Reggie Bush.
Now we cool, man, Reggie we cool now but like back then I was like damn went shopping with Reggie Bush. Now we cool, man, Reggie, we cool now,
but like back then I was like, damn, like that's Reggie Bush.
I remember we go to the mall and they close the store down
and they say, yo, get whatever you want.
Damn.
Yeah.
That's wild.
I remember Lyner, he was fighting with this girl,
arguing with her all night.
I do remember that.
Marifred, I was with, oh, you was with Lindale White.
Yeah, that's my dog.
Yeah, they was hanging out.
That's my dog.
I swear to God, man, I remember going to pit like,
damn dog, we ain't living like USC.
Where's the sunshine?
Dwayne Jerry had the little Mercedes.
I remember going to, we went to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.
Mercedes. I remember going to with the Roscoe's chicken and waffles. What's the big security guard and black dude, Boy Ed on Friday.
Oh, he played Debo? He's talking about-
Not Debo, the other one that he was selling the weed to Smokey.
Big Perm? He's talking about Faison.
Big Perm!
Faison.
Faison. Big perm? You're talking about phase on love? I remember the first time meeting Snoop Dogg. I'm like, if USC wasn't as far, well, I mean,
they kind of dropped the offer, but I was going there.
I can't believe that.
That's your school. If you don't get hurt, you're going to SC.
Easy. And I wasn't scared of who they had. I see the players they had. I seen Reggie.
I see all them dudes. I'm in the mix.
Would you say, so I was thinking about this.
I was like, cause Reggie is what?
Two years older than you?
Would have been two or three?
Reggie was nice.
He was probably, because you, I mean,
you're obviously a year younger,
like you remind me of him, right?
Like you're the type of game.
Was that the kind of guy you emulated?
Yeah, exactly.
I never, since we just rapping you from SC and all that.
So I remember when I went to Pitt, my number was number 20, right?
Reggie was always five.
He goes to the league.
He's 25.
I'm like, yo, hey, listen, hey, Reeves left.
He was 25.
Reggie Bush, let me get that 25.
I'm going to show y'all something.
Hell yeah.
That's all right.
You could.
25. Bro, you know Reggie Bush dog, like he had every, every kid in the hood had the whole
strips on the, ah, area code. So that's why I wore 25.
Dude, I still say this today. Like if a kid, usually it's like, for me, it's like dads,
like, oh, you know, son, this is Mattie, played at USC. These kids have no clue.
I'm like, guys, you guys know who Reggie Bush is? They're like, yeah. I'm like, I was his quarterback. That's literally what I say. And they're like, oh, and no clue. I'm like, guys, you guys know who Reggie Bush is? They're like, yeah.
I'm like, I was his quarterback.
That's literally what I say.
And they're like, oh, and then they,
I'm like, they had no idea.
But like, that's the imprint, man.
That dude in college was ridiculous, man.
Like he was the best college football player I'd ever seen.
Like what he was able to do.
It was incredible.
Even like getting to know him in the league.
So we played with, in Buffalo together.
I was going to say, you guys probably played in Buffalo
for a year, yeah.
And like, I'm real competitive, right?
Like I don't like, I remember, I was with the Eagles,
I remember we got Ronnie Brown and the whole camp,
like I was on his ass just to let him know,
like, you know what I mean?
This is weird, like competitive nature we had.
Yeah, of course.
And when we got Reggie, it hit me like,
oh, you bringing in Reggie? And then the other fans, I was like, shit, I'm about when we got Reggie, it hit me like, oh, you bringing that Reggie?
And then the other fans, I was like, shit, I'm about to play with Reggie.
And that's how I knew like, dog, this is really like my childhood high school idol, you know
what I mean?
Because normally I wouldn't have been like that.
That's pretty rad.
So you said you had what, 70 something offers.
70.
Are there any other school visits though that stand?
Obviously SC, but any other schools, even just a visit, maybe you weren't going to go,
but you were like, that was a great, that's a great spot.
I'm just not going to go there.
Anything stand out to you?
I'm obsessed because I didn't really, I barely went to college.
So I think this is like crazy.
How you gonna do for yourself then?
That's pretty good, brother.
I'm all right.
I'm all right with no college.
College ain't for everybody, Shady.
College ain't for everybody.
You know what?
This is a crazy story. I'm all right. I'm all right with no college ain't for everybody. Shakey, college ain't for everybody.
You know what? This is a crazy story. So I go to Penn State. This is when Mike Robinson was having a phenomenal year as a quarterback.
Yeah. Mike was nice too.
I was this dude named Vidal Hazerson, one of the top.
Mm-hmm.
Was you? No, you left before.
He was at SC.
I know, but you didn't.
But he transferred.
But you didn't play well because he was...
No, but I remember the name and recruiting,
like they were recruiting him, yeah.
So we there, and he's the top wire receiver or whatever,
and Penn State was a phenomenal time.
And we were having a conversation,
and I've always been this real honest,
you know what I'm saying?
And it's nothing like a,
it don't come from a malicious place, I'm just being real.
And we were talking about like the quarterbacks
and these dudes were trying to say that
Mike Rob was better than Vince Young.
So I'm like, whoa, fellas.
Are y'all joking or y'all serious?
And then we going back and forth and then he shows up.
Mike, he shows up.
So me and the guys are arguing and Mike's in there
and he was a super cool dude.
He was like, it's all good. He's a young buck, you know, he shows up. So me and the guys are arguing and Mike's in there and he was a super cool dude. He was like, it's all good.
He's like, he's a young buck, you know, he don't understand.
And to this day, we always talk about,
cause it was a rumor that we had a fight,
which we never fought.
And me and Mike always laugh about it,
like everybody made a big deal about it.
And I was a seven-year-old kid
just was speaking his honest opinion.
Cause Mike had a phenomenal year,
but Vince Young and, well, you know, I mean, you know.
Listen, man, I was listening to you the other day.
I know, trust me. His knee was down.
Calling Chase Daniels on the phone. Your take on Darnold, man. I said it earlier in the show.
You said at some point, like superstars struggle, but then they get back to themselves. You call,
so I would not mess with you with evaluation, man. You've been right a lot.
Think about that for a second though, right?
It makes a lot of sense.
Everybody's like, I'm a guy who plays so bad.
You're not surprised.
See, the thing I like about what people do now is if you're a really, really good player,
right, like Lamar Jackson, and he's struggling in the playoffs, they never forget.
They never forget that.
They hold onto it forever.
And then as soon as you do like San Darno, who's been what he's been, he plays well,
it's like you forget that he was bad.
I just hate that part of it.
Because it's so hard to be good and consistent every year in the league.
It's hard.
So you mentioned Lamar earlier in the show we were talking about.
This might be the best second round non-Super Bowl match.
Even some Super Bowls, man.
The matchups aren't always this good.
And I know you played with Josh Allen.
I mean, what do you, that's the one game I can't, like, first of all, the Bills are
a home dog, which is kind of crazy.
They're getting points at home.
What do you think, I'm not even asking for a prediction, but just how do you feel about
this game with those two battling?
That's a heavyweight fight.
Lamar Jackson is a two-time MVP.
I've never seen him play this good.
I mean, dude looks like Superman,
running the ball, throwing the ball, right?
Standing in place, winning football.
And then Josh, I've been so,
I've named him the franchise when he was a rookie.
You know what I mean?
He's a freak, man.
Bro, tough as nails.
I know.
I run you over, he's always been like that.
Jump over you, I throw the ball 80 I run you over. He's always been like that. Jump over you.
I throw the ball 80 yards in the air.
He's a beast.
And like I say him, like even he's outnumbered.
Look at the Ravens team, right?
They got like nine pro bowlers and Josh got like two.
Thank you for saying that, by the way, to Jerry, because Jerry thinks his supporting
cast is really good.
I like Shakir a lot.
I like Keon Coleman a lot.
I think they're all right.
I think those are good guys.
Them dudes don't even make other teams for real though. I like Shakir a lot. I like Kion Coleman a lot. I think they're all right. I think those are good guys.
Them dudes don't even make other teams for real though.
Listen, I can't debate you, man. You've been right about everything.
Like with Shakir, you think he would start on the Ravens right now?
Uh, no, I mean, I think he'd be their number three receiver.
He's solid. He's not. Yeah, he's solid. Be nice to have him with no Zay Flowers, it'd be nice to have him. I'm just saying, I'm saying Zay was playing, right?
Zay was playing, you got-
No, he's not going over Zay.
That's what I'm saying, it's like Josh loses Stefan Dixon, you still up for the MVP, you
about to, you know what I'm saying?
Like that's hardest shit to do.
You know, like Matt, you understand, it's like, so now that I go on TV, I watch mad
film, mad tape.
Of course.
And I've seen like, when Josh done lose, right,
the other opposing defense has played straight man coverage.
We just gonna play man.
Because our cornerbacks is better than your receiver's.
So that's why Josh could hold the ball
and do all this crazy shit to get these extended plays
because they not really getting open.
They not open.
You know what I mean?
And then like Lamar, Lamar's great overall,
but you got like Derrick Henry and them guys. So I just
If it's if I'm picking the team to win
I think Lamar and them probably win just their overall better better team
You still think I know you've been high on Josh to win the MVP. Do you still believe he should win the MVP? Yes
Yeah, it's so hard to do the things he's doing with the supporting cast
Like I think about if he
doesn't play well in the game, they can't win. Flamora plays bad though. They could
find a way to win.
Derrick Henry could have 200 yards.
You get what I'm saying? Like that's a real thing. And Josh finds ways, bro, he's different.
He's different.
Do you think the winner of that game, regardless of I don't know what's going to happen with
the Chiefs and the Texans, you assume for a minute it's going to be the Chiefs.
Do you think the winner of the Bills Ravens games going to the Super Bowl?
I can't do, I can't say that.
All right, good.
Let's go there a little bit.
I feel like everyone, no one talks about the Chiefs enough for me.
They're still sitting right there.
Home playoff game.
They're just sitting there like waiting with another home playoff game.
It's crazy because it's like, yo, like every conversation I hear is Josh and Lamar thinking
like, yo, we got a dude that's going for a three-peat.
No one's talking about him.
We got a head coach, Andries the best, and Mike Pizzo of all time.
And the thing is like, it's like Jason, like, I gotta make sure he's dead.
I think this might be the year we kill him.
You like getting?
Let me make sure.
He always comes back.
Every year, bro, you wouldn't have told me L me last year the Chiefs would have won the Super Bowl.
Now at 2019, right?
I was blessed to go back there with Andre.
You know, as you leaving out, you want to steal some rings.
You know what I'm saying?
Hell yeah.
So I got me a little ring and I watched them win with like speed, explosive offense, OK
defense, Pat making plays, Tarek Hill, right?
All that stuff.
Then they move from that.
The next year, the Wampus is not as good,
they dropping passes, they still win.
You know what I'm saying?
Like they just find a way to win.
And now you get them guys that was injured,
Hollywood Brown and all that, they gonna be good, man.
I can't believe you, you're saying you played with Reggie
cause Matt and I were talking about this
before you came on too. So you've
played with Josh Allen
You've played with my homes. You had some time with Brady, right?
I played with Brady for the whole year. Brady. You played with Michael Vick. I'm not back to back chips. Don't count my chips off.
I'm never no never we count all the chips over. I count my my beach ball MVP award at the Super Bowl.
That goes on your Hall of Fame resume, bro. That's right. You can be just fine. I mean, I don't think anyone has that part of their career
that you could say that you played a long. That's why, like, when I listen to you on Fox, it's like
you got to pay attention. These guys play with the best of the best. It's like so clear. So,
like, what do you gather? Like seeing all those quarterbacks, are they really just
different? Like we're talking about Darnal, but like just the way like you said, the
best players at some point, even if they're having a bad run are
going to come back to what they were.
It's crazy how they are so similar, but they're all so
different. Like the similarities is like, they're all three of
them dudes. Oh, super crazy competitive. I mean, Brady's
like nuts with it.
I remember being in practice with him and, you know,
he's slow as nails and everybody makes jokes about it, right?
And that shit's funny.
And then you start seeing him at practice at the end,
challenge the dudes to race.
You get what I'm saying?
Like, what are you doing?
Like, what are you doing?
You're old, man, you're old.
What are you doing?
And then another thing is like, they all, they all, they're not worried about each other, but they all ask
about each other. Like I remember when I went to, when I left the Bills and I went to the Chiefs,
now Pat is the big dog obviously, but he would say, ask little things like that. Like, you know,
Josh got a big arm and asked about things like that. And I leave there, then I go to the Bucks.
And Brady, now obviously go to the Bucks.
And Brady, now obviously he's the big dog.
He ain't really worried about Pat, but he says stuff like, you know, the no look passes
and this and that.
And he was asking me how he worked and how he prepared.
And in my head I'm like, damn, he was interested to know how Pat is.
And I remember telling us that he knew that Pat's from the homes was a different quarterback.
When it was time for him to get a new contract and he got such a long contract so he could
pay other players.
Right.
Well, normally you see the quarterbacks, oh, you want to give me 50 million dollars?
Give it to me.
Come on.
Yep.
And Brady was the same way.
I'd rather get all my weapons some money because for me to win championships,
I ain't working on money.
I wanna win championships.
And if I want to do that,
I gotta pay players on my team.
So they all are super similar.
I think Pat is probably,
he has it all as far as the talent with the arm
and the running ability, the it factor to win.
And he's smart enough.
Where Brady was this, he's so much more smarter than everybody.
I remember in the game where we in the playoffs, I won't even say which game it was, but, and
the whole week the coach was saying, how, yo, they're going to play this coverage.
Brady has his own little meeting, right?
He texts his auto skill players, fuck what he's talking about.
Listen, they going play us in this coverage.
Ray was so down and all in the Super Bowl,
he went through like, he was at home,
he did a video on all the cornerbacks,
the linebackers, the safeties, the stars in the backup
saying he's bad at man, he's bad at man coverage,
he's better at his own.
His deficiencies are off coverage, everybody.
Damn. We were in the, so when we get to work, all the skilled guys running back, his own he his deficiencies are or off coverage everybody damn we were we were
so when we get to work all the skilled guys running backs to our series we like
dog this dude is freaking different he's psychotic dude he want to play right
now Brian was he was he I think there's no argument that he's the greatest of
all time maybe Pat gets there one day, obviously.
Easy, right?
If, they're all different, like you said.
If there's someone, and it's probably between Pat and Tom, but like Prime, Pat, Tom, game
on the line, two minute, like you're like, I want Pat all day.
Or I want, shit, maybe it's Michael Vick.
I don't know.
I want Tom all day.
Who's that QB for you?
Maybe it's Josh Allen there's no wrong answers really.
There's no wrong answers.
I think I'll say this right right.
There's nobody like Brady right there's nobody like Brady so Brady is always going to be
the answer because you see what he does different teams different coaches it don't matter I'm
a win. Only thing I'll say about Pat,
and Pat does have Andy Reid,
which people need to start giving him more credit.
Because Pat would be great still.
I told Jerry that a bunch, man.
But I don't know if he would be that.
You know what I mean?
Like he would be great,
but Andy makes it a lot different.
Like touchdowns, you scoring a Super Bowl uncontested.
That's Andy Reid, Andy Pat.
I would say out of all the quarterbacks,
because Josh Allen is at it factor too.
I'm gonna give it to Pat though.
I watch Pat dog.
I'm gonna win this game.
All right.
You ain't blocking up front, cool.
I'm gonna run around a little bit.
Okay.
Y'all dropping passes, cool.
I'm gonna run, I'm gonna throw with my leg.
Throw it to myself.
Bro. He's that guy.
Pat, so when it left to me where it is,
he gonna find a way to win.
We had a game, playoff game,
and one of these, a really good tackle we had was,
you know, sometimes, Matt, you know,
under some alignment, you get a little soft,
you know what I mean?
Fucking six-five, 350 pounds,
and your toe hurts.
You gotta crack, you know what I'm saying?
Yep. The tackle was the whole week.
Because the training room is like your hangout spot. You know, I talk about the trash. I'm in
there talking shit to everybody. You know, you hang out. And Pat would come in every day to check
on the tackle. Hey, how's he looking? Is he going to play? How you feeling? Oh, Pat, man, I'm not
sure, man. I'm getting a little better. I'm tensed sitting there, you know what I mean?
10% better.
Every day, we got the Friday, this last day of real work.
Yep.
The big ass tiger's acting soft.
Pat walks in there, how's he doing, how's he?
Same situation.
Pat said, F him, I'm gonna win without him.
No, F him, I'm gonna win with him or without him.
Walked out.
We won that game.
That's cold.
That's cold.
That's cold.
Hell yeah.
Yeah, Pat's a different brother.
Well, listen, we talked about quarterbacks a lot, but I came to the realization when
I'm looking at the slate and I know, you know, you're the perfect guy to talk to about this.
It can't be a surprise that, I don't know,
three of the best, whatever you want to say,
six or seven running backs in the NFL are left.
You got Derrick Henry, you got Saquon going.
Jumeir Gibbs, to me, has come around to lose Monteverde
and he just goes to the next level.
Kyra Williams, no slouch.
Yeah, and like this whole, you know, everybody's like, oh, the running back position. You could kind of plug anyone in there, which I think was always
bullshit. Bullshit is not surprising to you right there. And look, McCaffrey was out this year. He
made the Super Bowl two out of the last four years. So are we now back to reality where it's like,
no, no, you need a really good running back to win in the play. Maybe you could win some games
in a regular season with a trio, but you want to win in a playoff. Like what's your
take on the running backs that are remaining? Now you see it and you said it right. We're coming
back. You know, that's why I was so pissed off and Saquon's my boy. But you know, I'm like, yo,
man, go get that record because it's bigger than you or it's like, I wrote the narrative of, okay,
you can pay the backs anything
and you can still win.
You don't need them.
But you pay all these regular quarterbacks,
see all this crazy money,
regular quarterbacks to pay them elite money
when they're not elite.
You know what I'm saying?
And I think now, if you look at all the winning teams,
they running the ball.
Like Derrick Henry is a big reason
for Lamar's success too in the Ravens.
The Eagles, oh my God.
Saquon's like, come on man.
Where would they be?
MVP.
You know what I mean?
You look at even like Josh Jacobs.
I went to that game.
God, he's a stud too.
If he's not even there,
it's not even like a close game.
You get what I'm saying?
You look at the Gibbs.
As much as I like Jared Goff,
he's doing really, really well, right?
Wait, is he the same without that type of running game?
You get what I'm saying? And now I think it's more of a, it don't care about the position
no more. It's really about, we're trying to win. And I think the teams that are trying to win,
they are paying their running backs. And it's working out for them.
Rob Markman Would you have taken a knee like Saquon the other day? Would you have housed that call?
D-Wing Come on, Matty. You know me, baby.
Rob Markman I know.
D-Wing I'd text Saquon like, what we doing? We scored. Like, hello?
D'Alessio Dude, that was a 90... God, man, if he would
have broke ED's record, man. Shit, that would have been...
Rob Markman It should have broken though.
D'Alessio No, that might not... It probably will never
be broke. You know, I mean, the longevity, like, it's...
Rob Markman It's hard, man.
D'Alessio Now it's 17 games, but healthy, you got to
average what, 160, 70? I mean, that's just, it's wild.
I was with you.
You know what?
So he, we had a little smoke, we ain't no beef.
You know what I mean?
But I-
Yeah, he was talking smack.
I told him about my piece.
And I watched him say, what did he say?
Oh, absolutely not.
I don't want to break my record.
He was like, which I don't think he is,
but if he did, it took him an extra game to do it. So I did my want to break my own record. He was like, which I don't think he is, but if he did, it took him an extra game to do it.
So I did my due diligence and my own work.
And I see that my boy OJ rest of the team.
Yes.
It's the same situation.
You know what I mean? I'm like, it's bigger than that dog.
Like the next generation, you know what I mean?
It's a 40, 50 year old record.
And I feel like now when the owners is like, oh, well, we don't need the running back.
When you look at a guy like Saquon, who was in hell in New York, you come to play off
with a good team.
It lets you know, okay, we could break records, we go to the playoffs, we could be a one or
two seed if we get a good running back.
So it was bigger than Eric Dickerson.
You know what I mean?
It was opposite of Barry Sanders, you know, in college where Ash and Gentie, I'm sure
you watched and he was a dog.
He's gonna be a good put.
Did you see that?
We covered the Mount West game, but Barry was like,
had the opposite, like, I mean, I welcome him.
I would love to see him break it, all that.
And he obviously he fell short, but totally.
I mean, dude, I think we've said on the show, man,
it's like the year of the running backs.
The running backs are back, dude.
We're back, baby, we're back.
Hell yeah.
Like you were never left, but you're just back. You're just back now, so. But the respect's back. The respect back baby we back. Hell yeah. Like you were never left but you're just back
you're just back now so. But the respect's back. Exactly. Exactly. I see what you're saying.
All right now we gotta get to the what TV show you want to be on man. I really you sold me on
your acting ability just watching today. You're a very charismatic guy. Is that I mean we can't
pull you off the Fox show though. That's a great you got a great gig right now so you gotta do this in your spare time right?
They throwing the money at me so I'm gonna be there for a little bit more in my bag.
Good we love you on there too man we can't lose you.
Hey how are you liking the TV stuff? It's fun huh?
Well it's hot right now but before the hot. But in general, like just being on like talking the game like I mean, I'm in college, but
it's just like, it's fun, man.
It's good to see you on there.
You're crushing it, dude.
You're doing you're so good.
I swear to God, some of your takes are quite are questionable, but it's still fun.
Okay, I mean, that's the real.
I mean, we have like two, we have like, well, no, we have like two minutes left.
I know Jerry has Jerry, the take we were talking about that you're like, you
actually agree with Shady on.
We're talking about boxing.
Yeah.
Did you, did you say Mike Tyson's overrated?
Is this confirmed?
Did you say that at a take or no?
Mike's one of the most overrated headway through the whole of town.
So here's where you got me, right?
Because you had me with Darnold and I watch you when I can a couple of times a week, and
I'm like, all right, Shady really got...
So the Mike Tyson thing, you stopped me because I'm...
Look, I love Mike Tyson, and I'm 45 years old, so he was the skit.
But I'm talking to one of my boys, and I'm like, you know, Shady said Tyson's overrated,
and he hit me with this question.
He said, name five guys Mike Tyson beat.
And I went, well, Cory, Michael Spinks.
He was bigger to him, come on.
Older Larry Hove.
I got to like four and I'm like, shit, it kinda... Cause Mike's problem too is like
he went to prison when he should have fought Holyfield and Razor Ruddick and Riddick Bowe.
He ducked Holyfield before with the jail too.
Right.
See, I'm saying listen. So you sold me a little, I'm scared to even say it man.
I don't want to say it.
So my pops, right, let me tell you about my dad.
My dad was a big dude, he was big on like, yo, you never talk about something unless
you know about it.
So he had me reading all type of dude's papers and looking stuff up on Google.
Like with my son right now, we were with Paul Pierce.
And I said, you know what this is?
He's like, I don't know what that is. It's the truth. I said, it's Paul Pierce. Right? And he you know what this is? He's like, I don't know.
I don't know what that is.
I said, it's Paul Pierce.
And he's like, oh, okay.
I'm like, okay.
So I said, yo, you can do a report on him.
I do reports on Alan Irish and Michael Jordan.
So you know what you're talking about, right?
That's so good.
Okay, so look, before I give you my take on Mike,
my dad, Magic and Larry Bird.
Now, respectfully, I say, ain't no way a white boy gonna be better than the master Johnson.
Like, ain't no way he made me watch all the playoff series at the end of the playoff series.
This is still my opinion.
I'm taking Larry Bird.
Yeah, man.
Larry was a dog.
Okay.
So Mike Tyson, right?
We all love Mike, especially in the black community. We love
Mike. I remember as a kid, the basement would be full of a whole bunch of people. We just
watching the fights. But then I really looked at like, who you really beat though? Cause
you say Mike was Spence. Cause he was small. Mike was smaller than-
Mike was terror, Spence was terrified walking into the ring. He saw his face. He looked
like he was going to puke.
Old Larry Holmes. He's from Eastern Pennsylvania, so I know all about Larry Holmes,
right?
Larry was older, okay?
And then when Mike won his belt, he fought a dude named Trevor Burk.
Trevor Burbick, yep, yep.
That was a tough guy, that was the guy.
Did you know he fought two, three fights before he fought Mike Tyson?
Do you know who his name is?
Who he fought?
Who?
His name was Muhammad Ali.
That just shows you, you? His name was Muhammad Ali.
That just shows you, you beat an old ass, Muhammad Ali and then you fought Tyson for a belt
and we talking about you the greatest.
You can't name the other dudes he beat that was champions.
Cause when you fought Hall of Fame dudes like,
Lennox Lewis, he stopped you, okay?
Then he fought, who else?
Come on, Holyfield. He lost to Holyfield too tight. He beat him because he couldn who else? Come on, Holyfield. Mike.
Well, it was the Holyfield too tight.
He didn't because he couldn't do nothing with him.
Holyfield wasn't scared.
I love Mike.
So all I'm saying is, Mike was great, but when you start putting out the greatest, heavy
weights, he can't mess with the movie.
By the way, I'm stealing that.
My, I have two sons, five and three, book reports on the-
That's a good idea.
That is such a great, great call right there.
You want to earn some V bucks
or whatever things you want to buy,
turn in the report on Laughterbird.
I'm a Pennsylvania dude the whole way.
I love the Sixers, the Eagles, everybody.
And I remember, now I'm named the reporter Alan Iverson.
All right.
We went to the game with the front row,
everybody's treating us good.
You know how it is, you know, we in town, whatever.
Tyrese Maxxie, that's one of my favorite Sixers.
Yeah, yeah.
And he's like, you like him? I said, yeah. I said, get his jersey. We buy his jersey,
whatever. He signs it for him. He said, how good is this? Oh, he's good. Like Allen Iverson.
He's all for real. All right, cool. Cause I made a report on Allen Iverson.
So he had the reference.
We watched the game after, now my son's he's 12 now. This is probably like two years ago.
He's like 10. We, we watched the game. the first thing we get in the car, the driver, you know, we're driving
off, he says, dad, man, you lied to me.
So what you talking about?
You told me that Terry Maxey was like Allen Iverson, he's not.
He's kind of true, he's kind of right, man.
I love Maxey, but he's, your son's right.
That was a different, Allen Iverson Oh, you can't really compare Iverson
I would not I like think of a guard could score small, you know, I mean, but no, but he's the best Philly guard since Iverson
Yeah, so I
Find thank you too for talking some hoops. I'm getting I'm finally getting mad once the NFL season's over. We're gonna dive
I'm a big hoops. I'm a Jerry's a die-hard Knicks fan, man
Knicks they slowly getting there though.
Figuring it out.
It's like two steps forward and a few steps back.
But I'm more I'm working.
I'm working on a you're in LA full time now, right?
Or at least doing this doing the show.
Yeah, for the most part.
Yeah, I'm into it.
Yeah, have you been to Intuit Dome yet?
For the Clippers, the new Clippers are the new arena.
Oh, I didn't order it yet.
So I'm working on, I got a nice setup for Nick's come to the Clippers in March.
We'll go.
It's like a court side, it's ridiculous.
The Clippers, James Harden, he got mad at me because I said some takes about him.
So it was like, I'm trying to-
Don't you stop!
Don't you stop what you're doing, J.D.
I'm a Lakers fan, but the experience,'s, I was actually, I was with Gurley.
Todd Gurley was right there.
I was with him the other night.
Oh that's my boy.
Yeah.
Ask him about it.
He goes to a couple games.
So he, it was, it was incredible.
So, yeah.
Oh, let's do it.
Hey, we appreciate you coming on, man.
Yeah.
I can't wait to, listen, keep doing your thing.
I'll be watching, man.
Honestly, you're, you're someone I'm like must see for me on Fox. You're doing
a great job. So keep it up and thank you for coming on and enjoy the games man. It's gonna
be a good weekend. I'm gonna find out. What's up? Appreciate y'all man. Thanks so much.
All right now it's time for dynamic duos presented by Wendy's. Two faves for just seven bucks. Gotta
be Wendy's. Terms apply. This is where each, Matt and I are going to target our favorite duos, whether in sports or entertainment, obviously tis the season
for the NFL playoffs. We are going to do our favorite duos left in the post season. Okay.
And there's, you look at all the games, there's quite a few directions to go. Matt, do you
want to go first?
Yeah, I, I'm curious to see where you go with this.
I have no idea what you're going to say. I think there's obvious ones and like Lamar and Derek
Henry, right? Like there's obvious, I'm going, maybe you have the same. I'm going with Jared,
and not necessarily my favorite, but I think most on the line, Jared Goff and Ben Johnson.
Oh, okay. You went non-player. I like what you did there.
So just real quick, like obviously the lines and the offense, right? This is the number
one scoring offense in the NFL. Shaky defense a little bit just because the injuries and
everything that's happened, although they're still playing pretty good. Since Ben Johnson
became the OC, Goff has the most passing yards and the most touchdowns in the NFL.
96 touchdowns, almost 14,000 yards passing since Ben Johnson, right?
This is the last time these two are going to be together because Ben
Johnson is getting a head coaching job this time.
He turned it down last year.
He's gone.
He's going somewhere.
There's no doubt.
He's probably the number one candidate out there
for most teams, in my opinion, maybe McCarthy now. But I would say Ben Johnson. Look, I
think the biggest thing is like this team is the best team in the NFL. Windows closed
real fast in the NFL outside of the Chiefs and the Patriots, right? Windows closed. Jared
Goff, right, has a chance to elevate his status as maybe,
probably a Hall of Famer if he wins a Super Bowl.
I mean, his numbers are great.
He's won a lot of games.
He's been to a Super Bowl.
He can kind of get that monkey off his back.
I just think there's a lot at stake for the Lions as the number one team going
into the playoffs.
You're gonna lose both coordinators.
Aaron Glenn's gone too. You're gonna lose both coordinators. Your quarterback is playing
well. Is this the year they finally do it with those with those guys? I love that one. I love
that you went non player. I wasn't even thinking in that direction. That's a great one. Who you got?
I didn't want to do the popular choice, but how it just is Lamar and Derek Henry.
Oh, you did do it.
It's been the most potent one, two punch, but the exercise of how I came up with this was fun because
every team has their own version of a duo except the Bills and the Chiefs, right?
Who's the duo for Alan? We talk all the time. We argue,
oh, he doesn't really have anyone.
And it's true. Well, you talk about James, you talk about James Cook, but there's no one on that
team that every week you're like, I think, I think you're, I think you could be afraid of James Cook
at times. He's a good player, but like, it's not Derek Henry or Saquon Barkley level. And then
similarly with my homes, it's still to be seen. Right. And like we said earlier in the show, it could be anyone at any time.
That's how dangerous it could be.
It could be Kelsey.
Andy Reed in my homes or Kelsey in the playoffs.
Yeah. But it's Lamar.
It's Lamar and Henry.
I tried to talk myself into how fun Stroud and Nico Collins are.
And that's a lot of fun, but I can't.
Stafford and Puka tried to talk myself.
I don't know how well they're going to be able to. hurts and Barkley hurts it. Well, that hurts and AJ hurts
and AJ Brown. Like they're going to have to throw the ball. I mean,
who knows? I try and then really I really I love the way the ends
played for the Texans. I almost went that direction because they
single-handedly broke the Chargers brains, but it's just it's
it's Lamar and Derek Henry. It's's, it's, he's cutting dry.
If they're going to do anything, that's the duo left. That's going to carry them to a Superbowl.
So shout out to Wendy's. That's our dynamic duo. And now we're moving on to throwback three,
which, uh, this is a fun one for you, for sure. For me, I had to do a little digging.
We're going to do our throwback three, our all time
greatest college football teams. And I'll just tell you off the bat for me, no disrespect.
If I did not watch even a little bit, I can't put you in there. I know there's some great Oklahoma
teams from God knows when, and I just can't do it. So no disrespect to the truly old, old, old.
There's, okay, there's a lot of debate about this. And this is a great one because
I think you could argue, I'm with you. Like you can go back to some of the best ones in
the seventies and eighties and sixties. And again, I just like some of the USC teams in
the seventies were some of the best of all time. I just, I didn't, I didn't watch them
like you, you know, like even in the eighties. and there's there's also this this narrative of everyone compares. Oh, well,
they were and I would put myself in that category. It's like great in college average in the
NFL. We are talking college. Okay, we aren't talking. Oh, well, they did this and then
their Hall of Famers in the NFL. It doesn't to me. It doesn't matter. That's why it's always like, who's the greatest
quarterback of all time in college. But a lot of those guys happen to be good in the
NFL too. So it's like, it's just, it's just one. So that argument's fucking bullshit.
Okay. But I'm just gonna start here. I'm gonna start with number three. Go ahead. 2019 LSU.
Hell yeah.
That was my boy, Coach O, was the head coach.
I got this.
I got some notes here.
Just real quick, dude.
I'm just going to rattle off this offense.
Because honestly, their defense was kind of shit that year.
It wasn't great.
That's not like a complete team, but their offense was so good.
Burrow, Clyde Edwards-Helaaire, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson.
Sick.
Defense, they did have a couple dudes.
Derek Stingley Jr. was a dude.
Patrick Queen and Grant Delpit.
Overall, their defense wasn't great.
I think they're like 30 or 40th or something, 50th,
something like that total defense.
That was one of the more fun teams
I was covering college football then, not the S E one of
the more fun teams to watch.
Like, it was just like they didn't need a defense.
They could have probably beaten teams without a defense.
That's how fun and how good they were ran the table in the SEC, won a national championship,
burrow wins a Heisman, Coach Joe, who I love gets the trophy.
That team is one of the best of all do it.
That's my number three as well.
I was worried we're going to have some overlap. I don't
care. You know, I tried to talk myself into, oh, was the Trevor Lawrence Clemson team?
No, no, couldn't do. I tried to talk myself into some others as so clearly one of the
three best college teams of all time. If you're of our generation. All right. Number two,
I wonder if we're going to overlap the whole way.
So that's your number three. I think I mean, are we going Miami? I'm going 2001. So go
get I mean, look at 2001. I mean, you just want to talk about beasts all over the field.
Obviously, Ken Dorsey won the Maxwell Award, Clinton Portis 1200 yards on the ground.
And then of course, we'd be remiss not to mention for me, my favorite defensive back
of all time, Ed Reed. He's he's like an adjective. We describe things like if someone makes any
kind of a play, it's like, Oh, wow, you just play your Ed Reed. You just did it. Ed Reed.
So that to listen to listen to this. Okay. 38 future NFL draft picks 17 17 future first-rounders
Okay, Dorsey Fortis first rounders Andre Johnson Jeremy Shockey
Vilma
Bryant McKinney
Buchanan these guys were on the bench an NFL team and this is the argument they were on the bench
but by the way on the bench they didn't play NFL team. And this is the argument. They were on the bench. But by the way, on the bench, they didn't play.
So Willis McGahey and Frank Gore, Helen Winslow,
the late Sean Taylor, who I came out of high school with,
Vince Wulfork, my boy.
We just got into the Orange Bowl Hall fame together.
And Anshrel Roll, who I played with,
who was a first rounder, I believe.
Arizona, yeah.
Arizona, who's one of my dogs.
I love that guy that
Team that's sick man is the most stacked team I would say of all time
But shit man, you know where I'm gonna go you gotta go and you know what I don't call me a homer all you want
Call it a favorite. I mean that's my boy
But it's for sure one. I'm gonna clear the decks for you because we are aligned on number one talk your shit Matt liner talk your shit the only team
to go
wire to wire number one
2004 only I believe I thought I saw that that kind of stat pop up this year during the season
2004 USC, okay?
Look, I could talk about us for fucking an hour.
Dominant defense, pretty dominant offense
even though we were young.
And by the way, we didn't even have Mike Williams that year.
Remember big old Mike?
He decided to say, F the NCAA and pull Maurice Claret.
I'm gonna leave early and then he didn't
and we were like, no, don't leave us, dude.
That's right, you didn't have Mike Williams that time. Mike Mike Williams is the most dominant arguably the most dominant player in that era
Physically dominant and anyone would say the same
We beat Jason white who'd won the Heisman Adrian Peterson who is a freak by 40
Points 36 points in the national championship game
I would say and I don't know but you can quote me maybe the most lopsided national championship game. I would say, and I don't know, but you can quote me,
maybe the most lopsided national championship game
of all time, probably.
Maybe we could look that up really quick.
I don't know, but it had to be the most dominant
performance of all time.
Of modern day, for sure.
Shout out to some of my boys on defense.
Some people are gonna be like,
who the fuck are these guys?
Matt Grudygood, I don't care, he was up for the buckets.
Lofa Titupu, played in Seattle for a long time. Great player. Sean Cody. Great player. Play for the Houston. Steve Smitty, your boy for the Giants. Dwayne Jarrett, Lindell and Reggie. Obviously those guys combined for over 2500 yards from scrimmage that year. I mean, I can go on and on anytime. It must have been like though, anywhere, any place to get into that huddle and just look
at those other faces you just met.
We had a great offensive line.
Ryan Khalil, my center, who's going to be a hollow.
Would you say you'd say anytime, any place put us up against any T what you do?
Because that's my squad.
By the way, I have, I have this conversation ever whenever I see Marcus Spears, because
the year before Marcus Spears was at LSU and we shared we shared the title they want they were in the national championship
game we got hosed by the BCS bullshit because Oklahoma lost to Kansas State and Darren Sprouls
but still made it we beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl so we got a share of we had like
the AP poll or something we got to share but I still tell him to this day bro let's go
in the backyard and we just we laugh about it
But listen man, like I think I think based on our performance number one the whole year
Played we played some good teams that year beat Notre Dame Virginia Tech to kick off the season and then just the most dominant
Performance in championship game history. All right. Well, let's let's land the plane right here
Ohio State this year's Ohio State going up against.
My hamstring is cramping right now.
Really bad.
Fuck, that's because I'm old.
OK, keep going.
You're washed.
No, this year's breathe through the cramp
while you think about this year's Ohio.
Oh, Georgia TCU.
Yeah, fuck.
That doesn't count, though.
Ohio State this year, as hot as they are right now,
against that USC team, what's the
final score?
Final score?
Yeah.
That'll be a little closer to like our game against Texas, right?
That was 41 38.
I think that'd be a high scoring game.
So it's a shootout.
It's a shootout, but we win possession win.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Ohio state's nice.
All right. So we're getting, so hold on really quick. We win. One possession win? Yeah. Yeah, Ohio State's nice.
All right, so we're getting so hold on really quick.
Got to say this.
The three biggest deficits, right?
Top three biggest blowouts in natty history.
Georgia beat TCU.
Yeah, shit.
That one's a little bit.
You could put an asterisk by that, though.
Alabama over Ohio State by 28 and 2020.
And what's the third?
Oh, ours is by the third
Anyway
You have so you have to lock who's locking down some of them Ohio State receivers
We got Pete Carroll running the defense, bro. We're good
Alright, well is gonna be a fun week for sure
Everybody enjoy
again, and again shout out to everyone in LA. Please stay safe and
do what you can to help out over there. And another good show in the books. We're going
to come back next week and there's going to be, everything's going to be different. Everything's
going to be different. Enjoy the weekend, everyone.
Yes.
