So so real quick Scott, this is a this is such a big discovery that you that you've you sold a show about it or you're working with Netflix on on a just the whole story of this? I'm working with all kinds of people man every day somebody new calls and it's just we've been digging for 10 years and we've been finding things and so I've done a couple of shows with a travel channel and a history channel and discovery channel and some other ones and so it's been kind of trickling in but this book came out in June and it kind of exploded and now doing all kinds of projects on it but... You guys are talking about this war that might be coming and it kind of is a nice segue because this history that I'm about to talk about, it begins with a war, a double proxy war. If the listeners know what that is, it's proxy war is like what happened to Russia and Afghanistan or between the US and Russia and Vietnam where one country is fighting another country and a third party is supplying weapons and and everything short of their own troops so you get Pelosi to turn her phone off so also it is that whoever's phone just trying your Pelosi the rest of the day to it's also that two that two nations are warring on another country's territory.

Starting point is 00:15:31 So it's like, exactly. So within this is like a lot of people didn't think this is a proxy war, what's going on with Armenia between Turkey and Russia in a weird way that they are trying to draw, that the people want those two powers going at each other and weakening each other. Well, that's what was going on in the 16th century. So, 20 years before Jamestown, you've got Spain and England who are on the brink of war.

Starting point is 00:16:00 The Queen of England at the time was Queen Elizabeth, and the King of Spain was King Philip II who had been married to Bloody Mary Elizabeth's older sister. So you got that age-old Catholic versus Protestant thing going on. And at the time, Spain had taken over the Netherlands. And so the Netherlands were rebelling and the English were supplying them with horses and guns and cannons. And at the same time, the English were invading and conquering Ireland and the Spanish were given them weapons and horses.

Starting point is 00:16:28 So they're not declared war on each other outright yet, but they would in the coming year. And a group of pirates visited the Queen with an idea to if she would provide them with a lot of gunpowder and a lot of ships that they would go, find a place in the New World to pirate the Spanish, and if they got caught, they were just pirates and they'd hang for it. But if they didn't get caught and they returned successfully, they would kick her 10% percent under the table. And it's kind of the birth of plausible deniability.

And they weren't pursued because the natives just were more focused on stealing all of their shit because they didn't have irons. To get axes and saws and things, simple tools is a big deal. And your lost colony comes in after all of this. And normally in school, they don't talk about any of the voyages that came before the

Starting point is 00:29:24 lost colony. They start the story in talk about any of the voyages that came before the lost colony. They start the story in the middle like Star Wars, except they never give you the other stuff. And so when the lost colony comes in, they land on this island called Roanoke Island, which about 50 miles from Patterson. And when they get there, they're coming to pick up 15 guys from the year before, who they don't know, are gone. They're murdered, right? And yeah, they haven't, it's not like they could call them on a cell phone and tell them what just happened. So, I know it's crazy, right?

Starting point is 00:29:57 They got murked by the Sacrotan Indians. And Ralph Lane is that your connection is the game, but at any route, he wanted to control the waterways the same tactics he had done in Ireland so he was going to do that anyway. Yeah, and the city Greenville is named after Grenville. Um. And there's a Manio too, right? City, but there is a Manio too, which is on Roanoke Island, even though he was from Hatteras Island. Starting point is 00:34:08 You said something really quick there. So the first, the first group to come out and all the preceding groups, they had no women, is that right? Right. The first, the first, second and third group were all military men because their whole purpose was to rob Spanish ships. They were not trying to plant a colony. They just wanted to use these outer islands of North Carolina to rob the Spanish. And they did that, and that's all well and good, and they stole a ship full of silver

And they end up having an English child born, Virginia Dares, the first English childborn in America, and then the first English- First Anchor baby.

Starting point is 00:36:12 They baptize Mania. The very first anchor baby, Virginia Dare. So at this point, the governor of the colony says, I'm going back for resupplies. If you leave Roanoke Island, just carve the name of where you've relocated to on a tree or some obvious place. Now when he goes back to England, it takes him three years to get back. Because of that ongoing war with Spain, can't come back immediately.

Starting point is 00:36:43 So he actually gets wounded three times. He's shot in the ass, stabbed in the head with a pike, and slashed in the side with a sword. So he's got a recover from that. And eventually, his name is John White. He's an artist. When he finally gets back to the colony in 1590, three years after he left him, he finds a palisade, which is like a circle of trees and it's like a really

Starting point is 00:37:09 primitive defense. And on the right-hand entrance of the palisade, they've carved the word croatelan, which he told him to do that if they relocated, and he told him to put a cross under the name if they left for danger. If they're just hungry, or the mosquitoes were bad or whatever, and they left for non-dangerous reasons, just the word is all they needed. Well all they wrote was croatolin, there's no cross. And then they wrote CRO and another tree where the boats used to be kept. And all the houses were gone and all the people people people people people peopledun-da-dom mystery. And in school, they teach that,

Starting point is 00:37:45 and no one knows what the word croatone means, which is bullshit, because we have over 900 pages of documents talking about the croaton, constantly from all these voyages, and it's on the maps, and the islands clearly labeled, and they even wrote down the latitude of the inlets of the islands. They always knew what this was. And when the governor saw the message, he got back on the ship with the other guys and he basically hitchhiked with pirates.

Starting point is 00:38:12 We're very reluctant to stop by at all because they didn't give a fuck about his colony. They just wanted to slipthroats and steal gold and screw horse, which good for them. I mean, who does it? Sounds fun. Right. But, and they almost had a mutiny because seven of them drowned and they were having all this horrible luck. And they're like, all right, we'll go to Croaton. It's only 50 miles from Roanoke. And they start to go down there and they get hit by a hurricane. And it blows them miles out to sea and they're just like, you know what, man, fuck you and your colony.

Starting point is 00:38:45 We're going home. They lost an anchor too, right? They wrecked in Ireland on the way home and they, they just abandoned this colony. And Jamestown's not for another 20 years and by then they just assumed they were dead and nobody ever looked for them until 2009. We did with a team of archaeologists, we went in and said, well, why don't we dig up the Crowetown Indian Village? If nothing else, we'll get a bunch of really cool Native American artifacts and we can display

Starting point is 00:39:13 that and it'll be a fun little project. There was only like eight of us in the beginning. Have you always been doing this? I hate to cut you off. But when we started digging on this Indian village, we found, of course, most of it was Native American pipes and pottery and the post holes of their houses and like an Indian village what you'd

Starting point is 00:40:33 normally find. But then we got into it and there's all this English stuff from the 1580s. We found gun barrel, gun log, sword, even a writing slate in the pencil next to it. It has a, the writing slate is, it's a lead slate that they would put paper on and they would draw and write on the paper, but the lead, because it's so soft, would pick up the scratches on the back. We ended up sending it to NASA and it, anyway, it has a picture of an English guy with a gun shooting an Indian in the back of the head on it which and it's like this big and you can but it's got that on it and we ended up finding everything you could possibly find and even what was cool though is you could see where all

Starting point is 00:41:23 these English items got repurposed, where you have some pretentious glass plate or whatever that's, they've shattered and they've chipped it all in a bunch of arrowheads. Or you can see where they took these dangly earrings and reworked them to be fishing lures and fish hooks. You can see where the functionality of all the English stuff broke down. They start using it for more pragmatic purposes. And there was an explorer who came by the island about a hundred years after the colony was abandoned.

Starting point is 00:41:57 And there were blue-eyed Indians there who told him that their ancestors were white people who could speak out of a book, which always took to mean to be... John Lawson, his name. That's right. And the tribe has always maintained that, but in 1937, they came out with this outdoor play called the Lost Colony, and in that they just haven't vanished, and they pretend that they don't know where Cro Croatone is, which they did. They never mentioned the Croatone Indians where they're allies. They don't mention the Croatian at all, the entire play.

Starting point is 00:42:31 They just have this word on a tree. They don't even tell you that it's Indians, like nothing. And they leave it like- Can I add something, Scott, about it? And on the cover of the book, he uses John White's map, which shows that he's seen the map and he definitely knows where Kroatoan is, but the way the cover is, right before where that island was started, cuts off the edge, right? So it's like a little dog whistle

Starting point is 00:43:10 to say it, yeah, I've seen it, I know better, but I can't say anything. Right. Wink, knob-knock. Isn't there in this story, I vaguely recall another map that was like patched over, is that? It's the same, the same, the same, the same, the same, the same, the same, the same, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map, the same map Is that? It's the same map and it has two patches on it. And underneath one of the patches was a fort. And the thing about the map is the map was made in 1585, and the colony's in 1587, so has nothing to do with them. The map was made two years before they even thought about assembling a colony. The map is covering up a fort that Ralph Lane wanted to build in 1585 because he says so in his own narrative and he gives the exact location, which is the location under the patch.

Starting point is 00:43:54 And they've tried to turn that into, oh, well, maybe they went over here and anything to poison the well, but they wrote, the colony literally wrote down, they went to Crowetown, they've got a positive relationship with this tribe. John Lawson is told this by the tribe all the way later, and then we put holes in the ground, and we found 16th century English stuff there. And not only did we find guns and swords and all that, all their crap left behind. We haven't found the buildings too. So we found where they had made a blacksmith shop and where they were casting their own lead shot along with thousands of lead shot balls.

Starting point is 00:44:35 We also found where they were smelting copper and where that was set up. We've even got the firebar and some of the tools that were inside of that. And the whole, if you didn't have this play presenting it as a mystery, because there's that bias where whatever people here first, they kind of go with that, like martial arts, whatever somebody took first is the best thing, you know. And if you didn't have that mythology, this wouldn't even be a mystery. If you had, um, just presented the facts as it were, and didn't leave th. th. th, and th, and th, th. th, thi thi their thi their their their the presented the facts as it were and didn't leave anything out and no one would debate it at all.

Starting point is 00:45:51 I just want to say really quick, I grew up in North Carolina and was taught, you know, from the North Carolina history books and what you've, just in a few minutes, the half hour you guys have been on the show, I've learned so much more about this that's essential to the story that's just completely left out of the history in North Carolina. Starting point is 01:24:08 and avoided the more juicy tidbits. And that was not because of the leaks or because of the the way the media treated the leaks. They decided what to ignore and what to focus on. And what happened was Snowden, naively, was using people like Glenn Greenwald as their conduit. He was working at The Guardian at the time to disseminate this information to the public. Greenwald then quits and starts intercept because of Pierre O'Midear, a co-founder of PayPal, which goes right back to the Epstein ring if you've seen my maps and stuff on that.

Starting point is 01:24:42 He basically paid it off, he bought off Jarmi Skahill wrote the book about Blackwater Mercenary groups. Great book, by the way. Greenwald and Skahill did great work up until they basically got paid off. Then Greenwald has recently though quit his own co-founded company, which wouldn't have been possible without Omitior's money anyway because they would not allow him to write about the Biden's because all the editors are Biden people. So do you think that he is, I've heard that Greenwald is, Glen Wald or whatever? Greenwald is his controlled opposition. Have you ever heard that? He's not controlled opposition. Starting point is 01:29:19 Nerf football and it's significant because it shows they were smelting on the island and there's a machine called an XRF machine that was invented by this guy named Bruce Kaiser that can give you the elemental makeup of anything in the world. It looks like a giant price gun with all these keys. And every element in the universe has its own unique light signature that it reflects back. And you plug this thing into a laptop, like say you shoot a piece of glass with it. And of course it's silica, but it's also got lead in it and it's got potassium and all these different levels. And from that, you can extrapolate where on the earth the glass was actually made.

Starting point is 01:30:01 And who made it sometimes. That's pretty interesting stuff. And the book goes actually made and who made it sometimes. That's crazy. So it's pretty interesting stuff and the book goes into all of that and we've got a really, really good group of scientists that are analyzing all these things and when you go out with the metal detector and dig a hole. Starting point is 01:30:31 Part of what you do in archaeology is you dig layer by layer so it looks like a layer cake. And you can date the layers by what's found in the layers. And sometimes you get lucky and you have like coins and stuff that have dates on them. They give you a pretty good range of when it when you're talking about but there's a lot of typologies for glass bottles and for pipes and there's certain items that are only made a certain way during these small time frames and we got all that stuff because we have so many international people now from Norway and England and Ireland and all over and they couldn't get flights here because

Starting point is 01:31:11 they were banned for a while and so we're planning to dig again and we actually have just located the survivors camp as well before the colony went completely native and moved into the Indian village and built their own houses there, they had their own little chunk of the island because they didn't know they were lost.
