So I got into all that esoteric stuff. And, but I was always interested in money. I worked in a bank in marketing. So I did a lot, I worked in online marketing, digital marketing. And I was always fascinated with banking because it never made any sense to me.

Starting point is 00:09:19 So this documentary is kind of a mix of that interest in all that esoteric stuff and the banking. How do banks work? Because there is something sort of mysterious and esoteric about them. And so this film is really a combination of those two interests. And I've written a couple novels and I publish a lot of articles and alternative media. I find this so interest because I just really don't think most people have a clue what is going on with their money. When they go, I put my money in bank, I'm so happy.

Starting point is 00:09:54 And then they're like, they look at their money and they're just like, that's all, they just think it sits there. And the truth of the matter is like, why don't you put your money in? It gets like fucking lent out to everybody, they charge interest on it and then they kind of f-you want. I mean like I have a credit union, a credit union. It's putting a blender basically. Yeah, it's just everywhere. And like dude, if I don't use this thing they start finding me if I don't use this debit card thing I have with that. That sounds terrible credit. That's a ter be buying, selling, shorting, pudding, calling, all that stuff is just insanity.

Starting point is 00:10:52 And I don't think people really understand how money works. I think they understand how working works. I agreed to work for this and you pay me this. And then I get the check and I'm like, why is half of gone and you're like oh because they're tax it's like chaos dude but I'm very excited to hear your topics on this so where would you like to start man let's start with money because I think it's a really I teach at a business school so these are college kids gonna go out in the business world in the first class class th class th class th class th class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class class the the th th th th th th th th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. In the first class, I was asked them, can anyone define money for me?

Starting point is 00:11:27 Very few can do that. And then I asked them, well, how is money created? I will not get one correct answer. These are kids, you know, 18, 19 year old kids in college. And I found that, most people don't even know what money is or how it's created. So how can we talk about taxes and all these sorts of things when people don't even know what money is? You know, so I think we should start there.

Starting point is 00:11:53 So it's really important. What is money and how is it created? to create? Okay. So I just want to start by saying this that I, I, you know, when I started really really really really really really really really really really to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start to start by saying to start by saying to start by saying to start by saying to start by saying to start by saying to start that I, you know, when I started really starting to get into geopolitics, right? I started looking at monetary units and the one I found very interesting was the British pound. And so, true, so I talked about this the other day, I was doing a USO for the US military, Brian Callan, Dove, Dove, Steve Vernon, and we went to Afghanistan. Well, on the way back, the lady booked us too close to our connection, and we could make

Starting point is 00:12:29 it so we got to stay a night in London, and it was very cool. So we go to Brian's house, Brian's brother-in-law is a giant, you know, investor. And I was just starting getting to like wide monetary units or this, why monetary, and I looked at the British pound and I'm like, why is the British pound worth like more than a lot of these other monetary units and the ones that they aren't worth more most people don't even know about but like why? Why is it worth more in the US dollar? Why is it worth more than the Canadian dollar? And I went and I asked his his sister who was living in this very nice house and married

Starting point is 00:13:07 to an investor, and I go, why is the British pound worth so much when you have zero exports, you don't make anything, you don't export any natural resources, you don't do any of that stuff. Why is your pound worth so much? And she didn't have an answer. And I later on find out, it's because the British invented money. That's pretty much they invented the monetary system and and and later on I would learn about the city of London. So let's start so I am very interested in this topic so where do we start with money? Well let's start with first what is it? Because a lot of people aren't really

Starting point is 00:13:47 exactly clear what it is and you know if you go to a textbook it will say well it's a store of value and it's a means of exchange. So it's a way where you can store work, right? If one way I explain this to my students often is, imagine I'm going to sell you a kilo of gold, right? And I say, let's meet tomorrow, you bring the cash, and we'll do the deal, right? We meet. I ask you for the cash, you show it to me. And when you ask me for the gold, I look up in the mountains and I say, yeah, there's a kilo of gold in those mountains. Are you going to give me the money?

Starting point is 00:14:31 Nope. No. You ain't going to give me the money, right? Because what the gold is, it's the work that it takes to go get the gold. That's what that's what money is it's stored work and money traditional money was were things that was easy to store the work in so gold you know it doesn't go bad it lasts forever so it's a great store of work but when you look at that gold what why it's valuable because it stores all

Starting point is 00:15:02 the work in it you know what I mean?? Okay, so let's let's break this down what you're try and say because I understand what you're saying because in a weird way, this is almost what digital is. Dude, it's like it's just not a fucking, it's digital you can't toucest, but it is, it is a stored work. A stored effort, a stored work. It own it, how many people don't own it, right? So when you're saying it's a stored work, is that like the work that goes into mining the gold, finding the gold, cleaning up the gold, pressing the gold and all that stuff, like the amount of time and effort it goes into that determines how much this prices, which is why a piece of gold is to be worth a couple grand like a dollar which is

Starting point is 00:15:51 amazing kind of press on it and you see this all this cool stuff that's on gold I don't know if you've seen a gold dollar but it's fucking bad ass man it's really cool compared to a hamburger for a dollar right? He says it is I see money like time because if you work hourly you work per hour so you get paid for the hour of your time so you're worth eight bucks of your time that's how much your time's worth. Dude that is really good point that's really good and you know what they say in acting acting is you don't get paid to act you do that for free they pay you to wait around yeah how much is

Starting point is 00:20:35 then there's a disconnect. There we go, 100%, dude, 100%. And that's a key issue in the film I talk about is people don't understand money. They think it's something, it's something else. And a lot of things in our culture, we think are one thing but really are another. So we could go into the banking part if you want. Yeah, I just want to say one more thing. Like, they think that dollar is actually, when that dollar isn't worth shit actually, because you could burn it up and then it's worth nothing, right? It's what it represents that it's worth more than the actual paper that you're holding. Well, I'm curious, with respect to gold, I mean, like, correct me if I'm wrong, but silver actually has more practical use than gold in the world, right? Well, why? Yeah, it's silver's using many things, now. Why then is gold a better store value? Why does it have more value like this? Is it more similar to currency in that way?

Starting point is 00:21:54 I think because it's more rare, it's more difficult to mine gold than to silver. Like when you mine lead, you also always get silver, right? So, you know, paper silver is leveraged, God knows how much, what a hundred, a hundred to one. So if everyone who had paper silver tomorrow said I want the real thing you'd have god knows where the price of silver would go that's what was going on this week with that they were talking about the silver squeeze and those guys on ready we're gonna you know go along silver

Starting point is 00:23:19 but GP market came in and destroyed that the other night they just said are you kidding boys they hit that the other night. They just said, are you kidding boys? They hit that cell button and silver just went, ping. Yeah, the silver market's a lot bigger than like what was being traded with GameStop too, as I understand. Oh my god, much bigger. And bigger implications, because game stop in the end, who cares? But so when you start talking about silver, you're to' money. Because wasn't it like... You got a gold run of money.

Starting point is 00:23:45 You know, gold oil and the dollar, those are the three sort of pillars of the monetary system. Wasn't it like in the 70s, I think, like Lamar Hunt and his brothers tried to corner? They tried to just buy up all the silver rich guys just try to buy all the silver in the 70s and it's a really crazy story. And I go, it's not the Jews, man. It's the bank, it's literally the bankers, the bankers had Jesus killed. And that's what's so interesting because, you know, the Federal Reserve,, we're drowning in interest right now on this debt that we really didn't even make a deal for. Woodrow Wilson in the United States, like a thief in the fucking night, fucking signed the Federal Reserve Act, and we not had the Federal Reserve, and we did not have anyone debate on it, and he did it like a thief and night, and there's this whole debate

So let's get into banking because I think people really need to understand the manipulation going on. And just to be clear, paper money originally was just a receipt, a receipt from a jeweler who was guarding your gold. So you stored your gold in some place, right? They give you a receipt.

Starting point is 00:26:30 I have five ounces of gold. And then people started trading those receipts. Instead of going, getting the gold given to the guy, you just gave him the receipt that you had. So remember, paper money, the idea of paper money was a receipt for something real. Remember the dollar was based, dollar comes from, I believe it's the Dutch T-O-L-A-R, then it became dollar, it was a Spanish coin, a silver coin, and that became the US dollar, which was based on a Spanish silver coin.

Starting point is 00:27:02 So traditionally, a dollar was a certain amount of silver. That has completely changed but a lot of people still think behind the dollar there's some gold or something. There's nothing behind. Yeah. That's important. Yes very important. That is in the United States. It's called the Petro Dollar. It is Nixon in the 60s or the 50s, what was it, the 60s? The 70s, okay, took us off the gold standard and put us on a Saudi oil. And the reason I believe they did that is because there's unlimited Saudi oil. So you can always be pushing dollars when, you know, when you back something by gold, there's only so many notes you can always be pushing dollars when you know when you back

Starting point is 00:27:45 something by gold there's only so many notes you can print. Right and remember that deal they made with the Saudis is based on all oil in the world being sold in dollars so there's a constant demand. Every country has to go out buy dollars so trade their currency for dollars and they use those dollars to buy oil. You can't buy oil in euros in rubles. You got to buy it. the the the the the the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their there. Starting point is 00:29:03 by adopting this petro dollar system, it controls inflation and it stabilized the economy. Without doing that deal, you have to wonder what would happen with inflation? Because remember, the French wanted to exchange their dollars for gold. So there's a lot of pressure to convert those dollars to gold, and that's when Nixon said enough. We're cutting it off. So yeah, he definitely stabilized the currency.

Starting point is 00:29:30 But do you, like, you know, a debate I have with a good friend of mine is like he thinks people make mistakes that doesn't play out. Or do you think that was done purposefully to control the world and stabilize the U.S. Not necessarily the U.S. economy for the people, but for the businesses that want to come here. Because I've always felt like the U.S. the biggest allure of the U.S. market is stability. Like we never had like leftist gorillas, fucking from the jungle come and overthrow the government. You don't have to, like in these other countries, that's something you always got to worry about.

Starting point is 00:34:21 Hollow at your boys. So let's get into what is banking. Yeah. So what's really interesting is how is money created? So 97% of the money that we use is digital money. It's deposits, no deposits in banks. So how does money get created? And it's so simple that sometimes people don't believe it. If you watch my film, I have Professor Richard Werner,

Starting point is 00:34:50 excellent German economist, I have the Bank of England, so this is how it's done. Think about it this way. If I go to supermarket, I want to buy a six pack or something, and I give them a piece of paper that says I owe you ten bucks and I hand it to the girl the cash register is she going to accept that? Nope. But I can go to a bank and I can say hey guys I need some cash I owe you $10,000. As soon as I sign that piece of paper that I owe you what the bank says, okay, I'll buy that from you for $10,000.

Starting point is 00:35:29 And they create, in that moment, they create the cash and put it in, they don't put it in, it appears in my checking account. All money is is a promise in the future to pay it back. There's no work involved. Starting point is 00:38:12 The moment you sign that paper, you've signed a security, you've created like a bond. I will pay back 100 grand. And in that moment, the bank just monetizes that bond. They take that IOU and they th and th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th moment, the bank just monetizes that bond. They take that IOU and they turn it into cash. And for that, you have to go out and work. Yes. And what happens is, if you create a new asset, so if you actually say, all right,

Starting point is 00:38:39 create the 100 grand and you build something new, then it makes sense in a way, because that $100,000 was created and as you pay it back, it's destroyed. But a house is built. The problem is when people start borrowing money to buy stocks like, for example, GameStop, the hedge funds that were borrowing money, that money was created out of nothing, out of nothing, and spent shorting, you know, some company that's worthless.

Starting point is 00:39:14 So we'll be creating these crazy bubbles. Yeah, man. Yeah, 100% dude, they lose monopoly money to buy stocks in a company that isn't doing anything yeah and the winners are the people who pull the money out first and I mean that really because there somebody's gonna be left holding the bag with that there's a lot of people there has no value a lot of people are holding hold hold the line hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold hold

In 2009, some of the banks went to people who were, whose loans were way underwater, no? Say they owned, they owed $300,000 on a $100,000 house. And they said, hey, you're current. They wanted to keep them. They knocked off big $200,000, $200,000 of principal in the loan. And it was really interesting when the New York Times wrote about this.

Starting point is 00:45:02 They never explained the math. So who ate the $200,000 on that loan? You know who ate it? Nobody. It was just marked all. Yeah. It's just an accounting edit. The Fed said, okay, we won't count that as reserves. No problem. It's gone. It's gone. Disappeared. Yeah. Yeah, and it could be done with everybody. I thouse their house. Starting point is 00:46:06 And then when they get rid of it, what happens? Somebody else, another bank owns it? And then what happens with that bank? They get left holding the bag? Well, that's what happened in 2008 and 2009. And Matt Taiby in Rolling Stone had some fabulous articles about this. Fabulous articles of the banks. Forging. They were forging all sorts of documents. Guess any of the judges because legally they had done some very strange stuff.

Why can't a central bank

If we don't believe that we have any sort of transcend meaning, if there's, we have a soul, if we're just robots who can think, and the only point to life is having kids and having fun, then money becomes sort of the philosopher stone. And so I really think there's a connection between

Starting point is 00:55:29 this materialist worldview and the importance of money and the glitter and the spectacle of it. I think if we stepped back a bit and really understood what is money, what is it good for, what can it get us, but also what's the meaning of life? Because look, the meaning of life, you mean, it's not money. It's, no, it sounds like a cliche, but it's just not gonna make you happy. The happiness is not gonna come out of that.

Starting point is 00:55:59 I mean, it might make you happy for a couple months, but it's not it. But if you tell people the only point of life is just going out and having fun and spending money, well, it increases the value, it makes it that much more important. And I think that's a mistake. There's more to life. I couldn't agree more and you don't realize that to, so would, you know, I totally agree with that. Because it's a real asset that is real value. It's a real estate. Buy something that's real. And stay out of debt unless you absolutely need to get into debt.
