Pinterest suggestions for holiday selling and a change to Google My Business. It's Thursday, November 4th, 2021. Happy Diwali!
I'm Steph Gunn from EngageQ Digital, sitting in for Todd Maffin,
and here's what you missed today in Digital Marketing, episode 498.
Starting today off with a bribe. I have been working with Todd over the past few weeks,
and we have some big plans for serving you even better with a major announcement
on December 1st, but we need your help. We have a listener survey up at todayindigital.com
slash survey. There's also a link in the podcast episode notes. We did one of these last year and
gave away a $50 Amazon gift card. This time we're not tying it to Bezos. We'll straight up just
PayPal you the cash and by we, I mean Todd. And we've doubled the amount to $100 and tripled your chances.
So three of you will walk away with $100, and that's $100 American. So if you are Canadian,
you will be rich. It really only takes two minutes to complete, and the URL is
todayindigital.com slash survey survey or tap the link in today's podcast
episode notes. An update now on our story yesterday about Facebook's test letting people
create separate profiles under the same account. We wondered if two profiles from the same account
would be counted as two unique people for ad reporting or as one. It's not hypothetical. Facebook earlier said people who failed to
connect their Facebook and Instagram accounts will be counted as two people, even if they knew
they're one person. We heard back from a Facebook rep after deadline yesterday who added this to
their earlier comment. Quote, there are currently no ads being served to additional profiles. If we do begin testing ads,
we expect that active users will be calculated at the account level, not the additional profile
level, unquote. So two takeaways. First, interesting use of we expect that instead of
we'll make sure that. And second, did we read that right? No ads being served to those
additional profiles. Finally, there's an ad free Facebook. Good news for people who use third party
tools to manage social media content for their brand or clients. Twitter has announced a new
API endpoints that will allow you to use your
third-party tools of choice to tag people, use Twitter's polls, set tweet reply settings,
and even send monetized tweets. It's all part of their new Twitter API version too.
The polls feature is especially welcome since it's been available on Twitter's site since forever,
but never in third-party tools, and it's a good on Twitter's site since forever, but never in
third-party tools, and it's a good post type for social media content managers. As well as adding
new features and support for developers, Twitter is also expanding its new API to support its
creator platform, SuperFollows. Quoting the announcement, we've added the ability to share
tweets to SuperFollowers via the API, so you can build solutions that help people earn monthly End quote.
In response to community feedback, several of these new features were prioritized for the new API release.
Twitter encourages the community to continue to provide feedback so it can plan what to build next.
On today's episode of Who's Copying Who? Today's contestant, YouTube copying TikTok. Who's copying who?
Everyone wants to be like TikTok.
Instagram has Reels, Snapchat has Spotlight, and YouTube has Shorts,
which is generating billions of views daily.
It appears that Shorts will soon be taking center stage on the platform
as YouTube is focusing even more on short form video
in a new test experiment called Direct Access to Shorts.
Quoting the company,
we're currently testing out a new shorts experience.
If you're in the experiment
and you close the YouTube app while watching shorts,
you will be dropped into the shorts player
when you reopen the app.
So you have direct access.
If you exit the YouTube app while
watching any content other than Shorts, we won't direct you right into Shorts next time you open
the app. Note, this test is only available to a small percentage of viewers using mobile devices.
End quote. Yes, this is just a test, but this would be a huge change to how the YouTube app operates, as it essentially
changes what YouTube is to some degree. Will our attention spans ever be the same?
And that's another episode of Who's Copying Who?
Big news for Google. Google My Business has a new name quoting the company moving forward we
recommend small businesses manage their profiles directly on search or maps to keep things simple
google my business is now being renamed to google business profile in 2022, we'll retire the Google My Business app so more merchants
can take advantage of the upgraded experience on search and maps. The existing Google My Business
web experience will transition to primarily support larger businesses with multiple locations
and will be renamed Business Profile Manager. End quote. If you manage multiple locations with your business,
or if you are a local SEO who manages a number of businesses, you will still use an interface
like Google My Business. It just has a new name. Along with the name change comes new updates to
business profile. You can claim, verify, and update your Google business profile and engage with customers directly in Search and Google Maps.
Call history is officially launching in US and Canada.
Messaging can be done directly from Google Search, and you can control message read receipts
in Google Search and Maps.
And finally, Performance Planner allows you to plan your local campaign budgets.
Performance Planner is a tool that lets
you create plans for your advertising spend and see how changes to campaigns might affect key
metrics and overall performance. Do you have business insurance? If not, how would you pay
to recover from a cyber attack, fire damage, theft, or a lawsuit?

Pinterest is pushing for marketers to choose them this campaign holiday season.
A range of resources and reference points have been added to the platform's Holiday Marketing Hub for 2021 to help you optimize your pin campaigns.
Here are Pinterest tips for a successful holiday season.
Quoting the company,
First, start early. Brands who start their holiday campaigns earlier in the season
see a 6% incremental sales lift and 4.7 times more conversions compared to those that only
focus on the later weeks. Second, find your holiday audience. Pinterest has identified
six types of holiday shoppers and how to target each persona, including the traditionalist and the self-gifter.
And finally, have best-in-class creative.
Pinterest has created a new board of campaign examples
to help you inspire and inform your strategic thinking.
End quote.
There is also a campaign guide that describes which advertising options
are best for different goals.
Overall, the Pinterest Holiday Marketing
Hub is an informative resource if you are thinking of trying a pin campaign and might even inspire
some of your other holiday campaigns this season. You can access the marketing hub by heading to
business.pinterest.com slash holiday. Google announced on Twitter this week that it has begun rolling out a new algorithm update
targeting search spam. Quoting the company,
As part of our regular work to improve results, we've released a spam update to our systems.
This November 2021 spam update should be fully rolled out within a week. We encourage sites to follow our best practices for search.
End quote.
Google provided no other information in its tweet about the spam update
other than a link to the webmaster guidelines.
Does the update target link spam, content spam, or other forms of search spam?
We'll just have to wait and see.
But until then, enjoy the Webmaster Guidelines.
Google's important PageSpeed Insights is also getting an update,
one that aims to address the challenges of the existing version.
One of the biggest problems with PageSpeed Insights until now has been that the data
presented is difficult to understand, since there's no clear separation between lab and
field results.
Google says its primary goals for the redesign were to make the user interface more intuitive
by clearly differentiating between data derived from a synthetic environment and data collected
from users in the field.
Clearly communicate how the core web vitals collected from users in the field. Clearly communicate how
the core web vitals assessment is calculated in the user interface and to modernize the look and
feel of the PageSpeed Insights leveraging material design. Google plans to roll out more updates to
PageSpeed Insights later this year, including separation of field and lab data, core web vitals assessment, labels for mobile
and desktop performance, and an expand view feature. While there is no release date for
those last items yet, Google says it will share more information about PageSpeed Insights as it
approaches launch. I really want to thank you for listening. I'm very excited to be the new associate producer for the podcast.
I do have a radio background, but this is my very first podcast ever.
So, hi mom.
A final plug for the listener survey.
We are giving away three $100 cash prizes for completing it.
It only takes max two minutes out of your day and is going to help us shape the next year ahead. We have some really
big plans to serve you even better with a major announcement about this podcast coming on December
1st. Don't worry, I promise you're going to love it. The survey link is todayindigital.com
slash survey and there's a link in the episode notes too. That's it for me. Top will be back
Tuesday, so I will talk to you tomorrow thanks and talk to you
