Starting point is 00:00:00 It is Thursday, October 10th, 2019. Happy World Mental Health Day. I'm Todd Maffin. On today's show, big changes to Facebook's e-commerce abilities. Did you even know they had any? Don't worry if you haven't verified your Google My Business page. Quora adds some, honestly, very basic ad targeting. Surprised they didn't have that there before.
Starting point is 00:00:21 And Zuckerberg, dude, enough with the stories. Here's what you missed today in digital marketing. Trivia time first, though. What do you think is the average cost per click for video ads on Facebook? The average cost per click for video ads on Facebook. Is it 71 cents, $1.86, or $3.55? The answer at the end of today's episode. A couple of huge additions to Facebook's burgeoning e-commerce platform just ahead of Black Friday. They are rolling out in-app checkout for Facebook News Feed ads. So what does that mean? That means people who see your ads will be able to tap the
Starting point is 00:01:05 ad and go through the whole cart checkout purchase funnel right in the Facebook app without ever having to visit your site. Now I know what you're thinking. Hey, wait a minute. What happens to our retargeting abilities then? No problem. Your pixel will still ping. You'll be able to create value based audiences like you can now. Also added, the ability to quickly turn organic shopping posts into Instagram ads. Good news for business owners who haven't yet been able to, or haven't gotten around to, verifying their brand in Google My Business. Now, says Google, you will be able to suggest an edit to your own listing even before you are verified.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Until now, you couldn't change company details like hours or own listing even before you are verified. Until now, you couldn't change company details like hours or your phone number until you were verified. According to a recent Search Engine Roundtable report, you will be able to change your business name, category, hours, phone number, website, and address. All that said, though, verify your business. For real. Quora. Remember Quora? The site which used to give people answers to valuable questions? I say used to because have you seen the questions people are asking there nowadays? Anyway, Quora, in case you care, has added new targeting options for marketers.
Starting point is 00:02:19 These include keyword history targeting, so your ads are seen by people who've asked about topics related to your business, and gender targeting, in case you sell things that really only one gender uses. Quora breathlessly announced that when some people added gender targeting, they got conversion rate lifts of up to 40% compared to ad campaigns that didn't target by gender. Well, duh. It's been two years since Quora launched its self-service ad platform. They say more than 300 million people use the site at least once a month. If that's true, that puts it just shy of Twitter's monthly active users. Come on. Quora? Come on. Oh, by the way, the answer to the trivia question,
Starting point is 00:03:10 what is the cost per click rate for Facebook video ads? The answer, $1.86. 20 points for those of you who guessed correctly. Ah, screw it, 25 points. It's been a week. Okay, lightning round. Another day, another Google myth busted. This week, Google's John Mueller said the old tactic of forcing Google to re-index a page doesn't really work. Apple showed what's in its upcoming iOS update, and it includes 59 new emoji characters. Actually, 75 when you consider gender variations.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Actually, actually, 230 when you count the gender variations and skin tones. And some Facebook Bytes, they are testing new photo layout options for multi-image posts, and they look really nice, really collage-y. Looks like they'll soon give group admins the ability to turn off letting people start watch parties in their group. Another thing they're testing, a persistent tab in their mobile app that lets you create a story. Apparently it pops up when you've scrolled past the stories shown at the top of the feed. Stop it, Zuckerberg. We don't all want to make stories. Those last two tips came from Jane Wong on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Facebook has tweaked how it measures link clicks, adding paid link clicks from Instagram and recategorizing some clicks they previously dumped in a category called other. And you can now select marketplace as a placement when creating dynamic creative ads for traffic conversion and lead gen objectives.
