It is Thursday, February 6th, 2020.
Happy Sammy People's National Day, Finland and Norway.
I'm Todd Maffin from EngageQ Digital.
Today, here's how you can pixel and advertise to people in Facebook groups.
Google Shopping ads have a new placement, one that's potentially huge.
Bing went down, Google's buggy, Spotify upgrades, and TikTok moves more of itself to the desktop.
Here's what you missed today in digital marketing.
So here's an interesting pairing, Reddit and television. The site that calls itself the
internet's homepage today announced a deal with Tagboard that lets TV stations display Reddit
content like Photoshop battles, their Ask Me Anything posts,
or pretty much anything else.
Reddit is a force to be reckoned with.
They have 430 million monthly users.
But this is mostly a distribution and rights deal.
Tagboard has a relationship with stations in 51 markets,
reaching nearly 4 out of 10 TV households in the US.
As of today, those stations can now display Reddit content in a
TV-friendly format and search for hyper-local content specific to their market. This is Reddit's
first attempt at getting in with broadcasters, something I presume that they hope to expand
into breaking news and other content down the line. Reddit is mostly owned by Condé Nast.
Clever little hack today on Search Engine Journal that'll let you pixel users in Facebook groups,
something that isn't really actually possible using the regular methods.
You probably know that you can pixel people who visit your brand's website,
or engage with your Facebook page, or visit your company's Instagram profile. But Facebook groups, and there are 10 million of them, are a big gap in this world.
Search Engine Journal's hack is pretty smart.
Here's how it works.
Basically, you join the group as your brand page, if the group lets you,
and then you upload a video.
Not just any video, of course, but one that adds some value to the group.
If your brand actually owns that Facebook group, you can actually pin that video as well.
That'll help.
And then I'm sure some of you can see where this is going.
You can then create a custom audience off of people who watched that video.
Remember, you have to have joined this group as your brand page.
It doesn't work if you join it as your own personal profile.
And since autoplays mostly count as views,
that can be a pretty sizable audience.
And from there, you just do what you would normally do.
Run ads, segment them, create lookalikes, and so on.
There's a link in the description of this episode
if you'd like to read the piece.
Standard shopping ads on Google will soon be available
to place in your target's Gmail boxes. This is for both product shopping ads on Google will soon be available to place in your target's Gmail boxes.
This is for both product shopping ads and showcase shopping ads.
First day of this will be March the 4th.
You'll be able to see your metrics under the Display Network section.
But heads up, if you don't want this, by default, your shopping ads will get distribution on Gmail unless you opt out.
And to do that, you go to the Network section and look for the tick box that says YouTube, Gmail, and Discover,
and tick that off.
All right, it's the return of the lightning round.
Don't freak out if your next Google search looks weird.
They say they are testing out some new formats in the coming weeks.
Some people have already spotted results appearing without descriptions, though it
speculated that this is a bug. Oops, Microsoft's search engine Bing went down yesterday for more
than three hours. But lucky for them, I suppose it didn't go down on the web. It was only down
inside Windows 10. If you came into the office this morning and found hundreds of Facebook
notifications about music rights on your videos, nothing to worry about.
Facebook is updating videos that have music from the audio library epidemic and just adding a little credit line to your video.
Twitter says it's renewing its focus on direct response marketing.
This after it shut down its Telepart product a couple of years ago.
Now they say they're working on a refreshed mobile ad format.
Says it'll also be improving its mobile ad exchange, Mopub.
Spotify has added 13 call-to-action buttons for your ads.
Things like Get Info, Buy Ticket, Shop Now, and so on.
They've also added Canadian postal code targeting.
Looks like TikTok is working on a way for you to upload and post from the desktop web.
This could be a really nice feature for digital marketers.
Some people have actually had this for a couple of weeks now, so presumably it's rolling out more widely soon.
Finally, dad joke warning.
Somebody figured out my Facebook password yesterday, so now I have to rename my dog.
I never said they'd be good jokes. Well, my apologies for getting the episode out a little
late yesterday. For some reason, my podcast platform just didn't send the file out to anyone
until the evening. So if you're getting this later than usual, well, assume the bug has not yet been
fixed. If you value a daily digital marketing news show, please take a moment to rate
and review this podcast. Stephanie Fusio tweeted, one of my favorite podcasts for sure. Concise,
informative, and with a bit of humorous moments every now and then. And if your brand could use
