It is Friday, September 27th. I'm Todd Maffin.
On today's show, a sneak peek at how Facebook plans to lure young consumers back to its platform.
The Russians are coming.
TikTok's getting enough attention that people are starting analytics platforms for it.
And an unlimited email marketing platform for 50 bucks. One time.
Here's what you missed today in Digital Marketing.
We all know how fickle young consumers can be, so no surprise that Facebook is trying
desperately to lure them back to its platform. There's a somewhat secretive group at Facebook
known as NPE. It stands for New Product Experimentation. And they are focusing a lot
on this young group, for good reason. One of their projects is an app called Bump. It's aimed at college and
university students. It's a little weird. Basically, it anonymously matches you with someone else at
your school. Then when the first person starts to chat, the other person has 30 seconds to respond
and every reply after that gets you both more time to chat. If you are in Canada, you are in luck
because that is the only place it is currently being tested, and you can download it right now from the Apple App Store. The app, as I said, is called Bump.
Now, look, there are a lot of apps called Bump, so look for the one with the developer named
NPE Team. That is secretly Facebook. But here's a tip. It's going to ask for your age, and despite
it apparently being targeted at young people, if you tell it you are under 18,
it will lock you out of the app and you won't be able to get into it. Trust me on this.
Facebook actually greenlit another app for teens. The other was a music app that integrated with
Spotify and Apple Music, but that one has already been pulled off the App Store.
Another bit of news for Canadians.
The first Facebook Marketing Partners Agency Forum is happening in Toronto on November 6th.
Here's what they say they'll be covering.
Quote, the consumer shift to stories across our platforms
and how you can create and measure stories campaigns for your clients more effectively.
Also, a hands-on iterate creative workshop designed to help you scale ideas on mobile in order to drive campaign performance, unquote.
Again, that's November 6th in Toronto.
Some interesting news if Russia or Russian people are a market for you.
Yandex is launching a video streaming site that will let users post videos on its platform.
Never heard of Yandex? You're probably
not Russian then. It's a big deal over there. The largest technology company in the country,
the largest search engine on the internet in Russian, and now they are stepping firmly into
YouTube territory, though videos will have a 15-minute runtime limit for now.
Already, more than half of all Russians watch videos through Yandex's search engine.
Hi everyone, and welcome to the first Google Search News.
So this is a kind of fun treat.
Google has launched a monthly video series called Google Search News.
It's a mix of index updates, news about upcoming releases, corny dad jokes,
sorts of things that webmasters care about, that kind of thing.
You can find it on their Google Webters care about, that kind of thing.
You can find it on their Google Webmaster channel on, of course, YouTube.
If you are dipping your toes into the TikTok waters these days, you may want to keep an eye on TikTok. They're an upstart TikTok analytics provider. Apparently, they will have tools to
follow accounts easier, track usage of sounds, get top-line insights, and, quote, automating tasks currently done manually.
No idea what that means.
The site is just a landing page for now, and TikTok doesn't really have any kind of public API, per se.
Tiktrak says when it does launch, though, it will be priced on a flat per-seat basis without any metering based on your account's performance.
You can learn more on their site at ticktrack.co. That is T-I-K-T-R-A-K dot C-O.
So last month, I was doing a little bit of an audit on our agency's own marketing tools,
and I realized, you know, we really don't use MailChimp that much.
We had an account. We were paying 100 bucks a month for it, but honestly, it was kind of a waste,
so we paused our account. And then this morning, I find quite the amazing deal over on AppSumo.
They have built their own email marketing platform called SendFox and are offering it for 49 bucks US, one time, for life, unlimited email sends.
That gets you 5,000 subscribers.
Every additional 50 bucks gets you an additional 5,000, but you only pay that one time.
SendFox has really well-designed landing pages, Zapier integration, that's a cool thing,
tagging, multiple lists, and this is a really nice touch, one-click import from MailChimp. What it doesn't have, in case you care, are fancy HTML blocks and templates. But if you're
just sending out basic emails, you really cannot beat that kind of price. You can find the deal at
bit.ly slash yesappsumo. That's bit.ly slash yesappsumoP-P-S-U-M-O.
And yes, that is an affiliate link.
Okay, lightning round.
Good news for brands that use Facebook Stories.
Facebook has updated its news feed on mobile.
Now, stories from pages are getting their own prominent block.
If you use long-form videos on Instagram's IGTV
and partner with another brand in those videos,
you can now use a branded content tag
on those videos as of today.
To do it, before you post your video,
tap on Advanced Settings below the title
and description area,
then tap Tag Business Partner.
Looks like Facebook is retiring those friends lists
that have been around since forever.
You should see a notice pop up at the top of your personal feed if it is happening to you.
Holy crap, is Jiffy fast on the animated GIFs.
You all come to us young people for hope.
How dare you?
That's teen activist Greta Thunberg speaking earlier this week at the UN.
And now if you search for how dare You in Instagram stickers or presumably any other place
that Jiffy powers,
you can get a little
angry grit at Jiff.
How dare you?
And Google's new
Search Console report
for breadcrumb markup
already has a bug in it.
It's been fixed now,
but best to check your reports
if you are reporting
at that incredible level
of minutia.
